    Thanks for the video! Big things for me:
    - less splotchy than GW
    - colors not matching up exactly to GW means a bigger overall range
    - dropper bottles mean less paint lost to cats :)

    You touched on the one thing here I don't see people doing, mixing them. They are still paints and mixing them often gives the color you want instead of the color provided.

    Tip: Go to the dollar store and buy some army men. Chop off their heads and prime them white. Apply your Contrast/Speed paint and glue it to the lid of said paint.
    Now you can clearly see what each color is/behaves.

      Going further that excellent idea, I would add to prime two more heads, one with black and another with silver/metallic. Some speedpaints look better with white, others with black and if you paint armour definitely will be better in silver/metallic primes.

    I'll be honest, I've been looking at these for a while now and they look really good. Comparatively speaking, just from looking at the videos, they seem to be more consistent than GW's contrast paints, and I think I'm going to grab the starter set in February. I normally use contrast paints for swarms of grunts or mobs that don't need to be super finely detailed, so these could be just what I need.

    • @rads9742
      @rads9742 Рік тому

      they are watery they are very runny and you really can't use them for any small detail work. they tend to pool randomly and is very very tough to control. my advice, get one bottle try it out yourself before investing in a full set.

  • @borna1231

    You know, I keep thinking about how people would react had the Speedpaints come out first, and then two years later the Contrast line appears. I bet we would be seeing the same cautions curiosity but in reverse. Probably everybody would have developed a routine with SP that they were happy with and it would take some time to get used to how different Contrasts are. "Wait, you´re telling me that they do most of the same thing, but they´re splochier and twice the price? Eeeeeh, I´ll maybe grab a few, just for varietys´ sake".
    All in all, I plan to go balls deep with Speedpaints, you just can´t beat the price tag, and I´ve got some big projects ahead...

    Cracking video today, Adam. You've not only given a good, honest assessment of the speed paints, you've also offered some fairly straightforward instructions for how one might quickly paint up a large alien or lizard force. I really like those two models you've done

  • @jherazob
    @jherazob 3 роки тому +6

    Every review i've seen makes me want to use them.
    About the two issues you mention:
    * A quick drybrush as you mention for the highlights is worth it, i'd say even with Contrast, so not bad.
    * A cheap hairdryer on low will help with the drying time.

      They have the same stated goal, but quite different function. Most people airbrush glaze with Contrasts now, because they don't actually work as they were advertised. And that's fine, I'm going to try it myself this week. Just another tool. But these AP Speed Paints seem to actually do one-coat to contrast, which is cool.

  • @mycatistypingthis5450
    @mycatistypingthis5450 3 роки тому +8

    These paints honestly seem made for a zenithal prime and drybrush highlight. Which is my preferred way of painting. I can't fix splotchy contrasts easily, but I can take the highlight up from speedpaints.

    • @ausaskar
      @ausaskar 3 роки тому +1

      Yeah, if you have to fix a splotchy wash/contrast by hand you might as well have just shaded manually because it's just as much work. If these paints solve that problem they're a clear upgrade.

    Gotta say I have watched now a number of review videos on Army Painter Speed Paints, overall I think they look great. I am definitely getting the full line of the speed paints. For me the cost is a huge defining factor. The Army Painter is a lil cheaper. Another great video and probably the better review of the Speed Paints.

    I just wanted to thank you for putting out quality content. I had a stroke Monday and lost all feeling on the left side of my body, but the doctors say I'm young enough my brain should recover and with therapy I should get feeling and function back,but my doctor s husband plays Blood Blowl so she knew exactly everything I would talk about and why I was so upset I wouldn't be able to paint, but like I said, they think I'll be good as new and I getdischarged torrow and your videos along with MS Paints have kept me sane these past few days, so I just wanted to say thank you just for doing what you're doing.

    I have seen several instances of the Speed Paint reactivating when new paint is applied on top of it, just as what happened with those lizard spikes. It seems to be more obvious with light colors on top of dark colors, but I would like to know if you have had any more experiences with this range.

    • @TheCrookedMoon
      @TheCrookedMoon 2 роки тому +2

      Yea, someone elses review who started testing this had the reactivation issue even days later in his testing with some colours. It seels to depend on how much paint you are applying, like drybrushing unless heavily probably won't reactivate it, or highlighting work, but try to layer over it seems to add enough moisture to reactivate the paint.

  • @AsgeirrSpjuth
    @AsgeirrSpjuth 3 роки тому +3

    I also use contrast for every model now. Perfect for base layer. Covers well and gives a bit of contrast. The biggest pro with speed paints though is going to be the dropper bottles. I do not want to have to open the bottle every time I need more paint. And yes I have one wet palette for opaque colours and a solid with holes for washes and contrasts.

  • @axelhackbarth9559

    I've heard that the speed paints give you more of a highlight if you put a glossy coat over your priming... apparently they flow a little better then.

  • @Starfury0042

    I stopped painting about 2 years ago and have been thinking about getting back into it. Saw an ad for speedpaint and it seems that it does what I used to do with inks/washes - but much better. I also never thought about using a cheap makeup brush for dry brushing and if I do get back into the hobby I'll have to get some. The way the Tyranid turned out is amazing.

  • @evidenz_
    @evidenz_ 2 роки тому +1

    The mixing of the speedpaints with the white is apparently not an issue of not waiting long enough. There is another video which confirms that these speedpaints reactivate again and again if you paint over other colors.

  • @DJRockford83

    From the looks of them the speed paints use the same medium as their tone range which would account for them drying slower and smoother. The price is tempting

    Hi, thank you for your opinion about the difference, between the two kind of colors, I was still not so sure to give them both a try, I'm kind of bound to the good old technique, but you made me think that perhaps there's something new out there that worth the effort to try and do something different. Thanks, go on with the good job

    Not a chemist, but it does sound as though the greater pull of Citadel both gives the sharper highlight and the splotchiness as it pulls together. So more (and a little different) tools for the toolbox

  • @Malgor00

    best review I've seen on these paints so far, thanks for doing it!

  • @kewlpackstudios
    @kewlpackstudios 3 роки тому +1

    Thanks, UA. Regarding pulling away from sharp edges the way Contrast Paint does, I'm wondering if adding a drop or two of Citadel Contrast Medium or even TAP Speedpaint Medium to "thin/dilute" them a bit more than out of the bottle would help. It's great to have more colors and tools IMHO. Good video - again!
    Also - regarding paint pots vs dropper bottles, when I moved my Citadel paints to dropper bottles, I saved most of the 12ml and 18ml pots (washed them out of course) so I could use them for something else... if you do the same, you can pour the SpeedPaints into the repurposed Citadel pots easy peasy. No waste!

    Thanks for this comparison. I've always wanted to try contrast paints and I was excited to see speedpaints were half the price, but I was concerned they'd be a lower quality. Glad to see that's not the case. I ordered a bunch of speedpaints and I'm looking forward to getting models on the table faster!

    Hey I haven't read through the comments, but you could pull the dropper out of the bottle so you could dip directly into it. It's an extra step but, in my opinion, a small inconvenience at best. I've always loved army painters line especially their range of spray cans so I'm excited to get my hands on their speed paints and compare them to my contrast.

    I was just thinking as you were talking about price "AND they come in dropper bottles, I'd pay more for dropper bottles". I understand preferring washes and such in pots, but I think its nostalgia from Citadel and they just always tip and spill and dehydrate. Dropper bottles are the way to go if you have a pallet.

  • @MortenHaggren
    @MortenHaggren 3 роки тому +5

    with dropper bottles you can convert them into "pots" with this one simple trick: pull out the pour spout ( like you would to add mixing balls ) then you get all the "benefits" of a pot: if you knock it over it spills all over the desk, it dries out quicker, you can jam your entire brush in there for easier cross contamination of colours until they are all a nonuniform brown, etc ;)

    I paint all my Blood Angels with contrast paints. Blood Angels Red is an amazing color, and once you figure out the technique of how to apply them correctly, contrast looks great even on the shoulder pads and other flat surfaces. I’m interested in trying Speed Paints for a few of their colors, but it’s clear that Contrast flows more into the recesses in those examples. If you look at the orange comparison on the bolters, the recesses are much darker on the Citadel one.

Can Speedpaints help me with that? I was in doubt before but after your review, I will definetly use the pallid bone and red to paint my tyranid army and the greens to paint my salamanders and blue and pallid to paint my eldar. I've only recently started trying contrast paints having had a break from painting regularly. If I'm having to put multiple thin coats on for a smooth finish, they aren't saving me any time over doing the same with regular acrylics.
    For me their strength has been in painting effects; muzzle burn, recess shading and the like. They're very good for that. It'll be interesting to see how the new range compares once the wider public gets their hands on them.

    Launch dates is on their website. Don’t know when they would become available in other stores. And shipping is expensive. I live in Denmark where I think they ship from. Still paying 12 euro for shipping.

    My two cents on speed paints, I will absolutely be getting these over the citadel contrasts. Most of the time they tied with each other in performance, contrast did better on highlights/edges than speed paints, but they can be splotchy on the smooth parts. I don't think anyone is going to only be using contrast/speed paint on a model and call it good, it's gonna be given a dry brush highlight with other paints. And with that being the case, the non splotchy at a cheaper price def gets my buy.

    Contrast/speed paints would let zenithal highlighting show through. I found that it doesn't really work well with standard acrylic paints (yes I thin my paints). The brood lord looks amazing.

    I asked Army Painter about individuals on Facebook. They confirmed the racks of them will be hitting stores later this year. They weren't any more specific on dates than that though.

    They may have some medium already mixed in with the paint pigments to give it that smooth finish over the models surface? I may give them a go if they come by my local store next month or a bit later?

    By the properties described in the video, I would guess that the Citadel Contrasts use a medium that is more volatile, allowing less deposition in the flats because the timescale on which it dries is shorter.

      One big difference I've heard is that the AP:SP are very consistent in how they coat the model, where GW:CP have some that are thicker/thinner than others.

    Another fantastic review Unc, Thank you! Your painting is awesome! Did you by chance try a blow dryer at all for your drying issues? Wondering if they wouldn't smooth out as much. I will try.
