I still regularly watch this video to remind me on how to properly thin my paints. This is just one of the most helpful painting tutorials out there for people, like me, who are total crap at painting
Seeing the glazes is what really helped. It seems like each time I try, I don't get it quite right. Having the visual aide is going to help loads! Thanks Juan, another top notch video!
As a new painter that struggles a lot with getting the right consistency for my paints this was very helpfull!! Many thanks and a happy new year to you and yours :)
I think it seems silly for someone with a lot of experience. For newbies like me, it’s extremely helpful to see each piece. I’ve watched other thinking videos but I’ve definitely struggled by overloading water till this video so thanks!
It might seem simple because you are a pro, but this made a huge impact on me! I have been using way too thick paint, blocking my details because I do so many layers of highlights and washes. I will use this tip moving forward.
Juan, just wanna say, you really helped me improve my paintings skills since I started watching you. I'm subbed to various painting channels (they are great btw, so I'm not dissing them), but yours just really helped me. And I know this will come in handy too as I still sometimes struggle with good consistency. Anyways, thank you again! And hope you'll have wonderful holidays!
As a visual learner this was great. I struggle to actually make glazes and seeing seeing how opacity sits on the white is a great reference. I've been over watering so it won't stick properly but seems thin enough. That'll change now hipefully
Juan, I have to say that I really like your style of teaching. You are very funny and I love watching you work. Can I give you a big thank you for your showing me how to do things better than I did before. I am glad to have found your videos, even though I am late to the party. At least I got here in the end.
Thanks Juan! I came across your video as I was finding it extremely difficult to thin down the paints when layering, I'll have a go at using distilled water too.
OMG! Aside from the valuable technical take, I really needed the laugh this morning (week, month, year, etc.). I don't think I've laughed through a tutorial more than I did with this one. Thank you!!!
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures I'm just sorry I keep accidentally hitting the dislike button first on your videos. That's twice now. 🤦🏻♂️ I hope you see them being corrected to likes immediately after.
This video has just rocked my painting world. I've just picked up my brush again. I've always been inconsistent. This like many have said is so beneficial to a visual learner like myself
I made the change from water to medium and liked it a lot more. It was easier for me to get fixed consistency with the ratios. Only downside is that not all brands are created equally and not all mediums and paint mix together well. When in doubt, use the paints brand of mediums for there stuff. I have heard a lot of UA-camrs say medium is just medium and does not matter but it does. The wrong medium will completely change the consistency of the paint.
Great video! I wish I'd known this when I started painting. I eventually worked this out on my own, but before that I used to try pre-mixing paint with water or medium and it's just terrible. I really like how you show a range of consistencies. One of the best paint thinning tutorials I've seen.
The title isn't click bait if it's true. I was completely shocked by your brush licking lol. But really awesome video and thanks for calling out a common trap people fall for all the time. As someone who has multiple paint lines I work from, having people not realizing each one requires different amounts of thinning to work right just drives me nuts. So I really appreciated you throwing that in while explaining the do's and don'ts. Keep up the awesome videos.
Thanks for doing this video, even if you didnt want to do it in the first place. For me it was very helpful. I painted a bunch of minis and have kinda high expectations towards myself, but also struggled with paint consistency. And I did exactly what you told not to do in the first place. So now I can change some things - thank you! Oh, and also my wife just came in my studio, while I watched this, so I paused the video to listen to her, which was the scene of your little....lickventure. So she WAS kinda confused :D
It's 00:18 Christmas day, I'm watching UA-cam because I can't sleep but my wife was sleeping next to me, your little brush locking scene made me cry with laughter. Instant sub hahaha.
Give blue a chance! Thanks to you my Slaanesh Astartes are painted an obnoxious pastel blue. That Skink skin paint video was a huge help, thanks again!
Great video. You mentioned your Citadel paints were already thinned and in droppers vs. pots. Can you share tips here for this process and the materials? Thx!!!
Great video, it's always nice to learn how other people thin their paints. However, I missed you testing each dilution on your thumb so I could go back and compare it to your other videos
I didn't because I was already doing that in the palette which is more clear and easy to visualize, but the names are the same, so of I say a Heavy Glaze you know what consistentcy to aim for.
Me encantan tus videos, sigue así. Tienes algun video donde explicas como transfieres las pinturas citadel a los otros botes (y cuanta agua destilada le ehcas)?
The only issue I have with this type of thinning on the wet palette (which I agree is better) is where I live is hot so the air con is on a lot and the dry cool air dries the thinned paint quickly even on the wet palette.
My biggest mistake that I need to adjust is using those cheese pallets with bowls. They are only ment to hold a few ml of paint but there is no surface area to drag out the paint and control how thin it goes. Pretty much an all or nothing. Other than that I love the 4 thinned side by sides as this gives us a very nice visual of what we mean by thin, to glaze
This video was so helpful! I'm been overloading my brush with water while thinning but I never put 2 and 2 together! I'm also a brush licker so no shame homie sfghdf
I used to lick my brushes until my wife told me how toxic the chemicals in the paints are... My habit finally broke and now I use a sponge. Still not satisfying as sticking my brush in my mouth but oh well :)
I'm offended and appalled by the click bait thumbnail and out of sheer spite I'm watching the whole video , I hope you're proud of yourself there Mr. Hidalgo 😏. On a serious note, I normally achieve an acceptable consistency on my wet palette at first but since I'm a slow painter by the time I either have to touch up mistakes or layer over washes , the consistency turns into an extreme version of glazing which required upwards of 5 coats to get the vibrancy back and I usually develop unwanted textures due to impatiently applying more coats quickly to speed up the process. Simple video but well explained thank you !

When do you use mediums like glaze medium or mate medium (if you do)?
I only use Lahmian Medium (but any of those other two work as well) and I do it when I have to thin down very bright colours ( with a lot of white) up to a thin glaze.
What did you put in each of your pre thinned bottles.
Paint and distilled water

@clidefrog2 no ratios, each paint will be different and will need different levels of thinning.
