As a swede who has done my fair share of babysitting, I can confidently confirm that the MÅLA paints have two purposes: Kids can eat it without dying and it comes off when you inevitably have to put the little ones in the tub and hose them off :D
🤣🤣🤣
thank you so much
I have wondered for decades every time I go in ikea and see stuff for kids
"do swedish people actually buy this for their kids?"
now i know the answer
That feeling when Jay painted a marine better with terrible paints than you did with professional ones
Shut
I feel personally attacked
Did you have fun doing it? Nothing else matters.
"I'm in this comment and I don't like it"
It's a serious kick in the balls
IKEA Måla paint is tempera, not acrylic.
It has a completely different binder that is designed to be child-friendly and washable (mostly). The reactivation and lifting is part of the nature of this binder, not a faulty feature.
Ah, that absolutely explains it. It's basically finger paint.
I kept thinking if only Jay would use an acrylic medium like GW's Contrast or Lahmian, or perhaps Liquitex Matte. Quite the feat to paint with a product that will reactive to the moisture on your finger tips or crack and flake off if roughly handled once dry.
"MÅLA-series has everything, what a child needs..." should indeed give a strong hint on what the target audience is for this product. 😄
That explains why it was so bad. I only have minimal experience in painting miniatures- as in I've painted one. But I've also repainted Pokemon figurines. It feels very different from painting miniatures, they're larger with more flat surfaces. I had to use my regular acrylic paint, which isn't paint for young children, but isn't fancy stuff; because I needed a palette more colorful than the Star Wars Legion paint set. The main difference was that I couldn't get a small amount of paint out at once and a bit more water was needed. Any problems with my Pokemon figurines are the result of me, not my tools.
It would be interesting to see Jay try the same challenge again with the tubes of entry level acrylic paint you can get at general craft supply stores. What's the difference between acrylic and acrylic meant for miniature painting?
I think it's actually gouache paint, not tempera but i might be wrong
I had this experience 3 years ago. One of the worst painting experiences I've had still to this day. 🤣 You nailed it though
That was the first video of yours I saw. Thought of you when I saw this one.
As a Swedish influencer, you have some sway with IKEA, don't you?
Look at me I made this video first
@@henrikwannheden7114 oh i wish hahaha
I'd love to see you collab with Jay and Nick at somepoint Emil!
In the dark grim future, there's only meatballs and affordable DIY furniture.
You'd almost think that the paints are designed to reactivate, so when your child spills, it's easy to clean up :))
I work at Ikea, MALA is the kids line of product so the Paint has got to be safe enough for little children to use and not ruin the whole home lol, so basically you can consider it more as a toy than real paint... That said, i believe the work you did with this miniature is still pretty good considering what you were working with - a "toy Paint" basically! Cheers
not gonna lie, the washed out grimdark look comes across really good, a millennia of service and war, perfectly portrait by having to paint it literally with blood and sweat
Yeah. And the storm lord symbol looks like it was painted on by the soldier wearing the armor.
My kids use those paints, and when I saw the title, my first thought was that you were going to struggle with the white 😄
The presentation, great editing, and those smooth chair turn transitions, just elevate the video and make it so much more visually appealing
Right? He is so dang funny it doesn't really matter what the subject matter is. I laughed maniacally at the gam gam bit.
My art teacher used to say: A good artist will make a masterpiece with the best material. A great artist will make a masterpiece with any material.
Yep. Called it 10:42
But for real, those paints aren't even mediocre, they are quite bad even to make effects and washes. You painted a space marine with literal finger paint, and it turned out presentable. Very enlightening experiment.
I don't think those are even acrylics but some kind of water-based paint that doesn't dry water proof. Try leaving the space marine in a glass of water and see if the water strips the paint.
These are probably tempera paints. The instructions say they might stain but sometimes can be washed off. This makes sense for children's paint.
Yep look like children's poster paints to me.
@@theheslops439 it's pretty much that
It's made so that toddlers can get the paint in the mouth without doing harm. It's meant for really small children, kindergarten stuff. Not meant as hobby paint.
Man, I love your content! The swooping of all the paints off sold the whole vid already. Great stuff!!!!!
Fun video, this channel has become one of my instant watch when uploads channels. Look forward to more!
200 thin coats. 😁
Nice paintjob, Jay. 👍
I love these types of experiments since it always shows just how good the actual artist is! Horrible paints but still looks fantastic because of pure skill!
This was a fun one for sure. Always cool to see what other paints do.
Appreciate the positive attitude and quality information on other paint favorites. Would love to see some brush technique videos!
Cool video, got some good laughs out of it. I like how you're fair with it and actually go a little further and found out what the product can actually be used for.
I have to say though, what you came up with is excellent. Dude... you took a toy and turned it into awesome!! Well done!
Just call it grimdark and it's an absolute win
Oh man it still looks so good xD well done, really fun video, would love to see what you can do with acryla-gouache
First video by this guy I've ever seen, I really enjoyed it! I love the positivity!
These edits and cuts were amazing my man 👏🏾 👏🏾 I'll be back for more
Hi Jay, love your experiments with non-conventional mini paint tools!
I FELT that heavy sigh while you were free-handing lol
Excellent vid!
Jay, brilliant and hilarious video! You do more to make the hobby approachable than perhaps any other youtuber!
This was really fun! I love your channel and presentation!
this cheap paint experiments series is my favorite. I'd love to see how options most people would have locally available to them (such as hobby lobby/Michaels) brands would compare.
Just found your channel - you are a great, great person! Fantastic personality
It's so calming to watch someone paint with the proper 👍
"Rugged, durable construction."
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I really appreciate your valiant effort! That model actually looks really good considering.
duuuude even with those paints you slayed it! amazing job
First time viewer here, I enjoyed the video. I would have loved to see another section where you painted the same chapter with your favorite paints and had them side by side in comparison. Maybe It's something for a future video in this style. Also, Apple Barrel paints do have some great colors with good coverage. I've got a massive collection from when I first got into D&D and started figuring out miniature painting.
I started with apple barrel paints and was very hesitant to get citadel because I like what I was getting out of them on my DnD minis, but I put them head to head on a Blood Angel and thats when I noticed the difference in quality of the coverage
Great results! These are the only paints we can get in Sweden so would like to see more of these kind of videos.
That red going down looked like Ninjon painting with his blood 😂
I recently stumbled about some awesome wall paints from a local furniture megastore. 250ml for 3 bucks and contrary to typical craft paint they are loaded with pigments to a point that thinning them by a factor of 4 to 5 still doesnt destroy the consistency or coverage. They even work trough an airbrush and mix with other colors without turning into greyish brown sludge. That said i did mix in some of my homebrew magic medium/thinners to adjust consistency and flow regular water probably ruins it just like any other paint if you add too much.
For anyone interested it was "Poco Abtönfarbe" from the simmilarly named furniture store Poco but i guess those paints are available in many Hardware stores as well.
Dude you literally have the best intro. Love your videos.
i think it would be an interesting video painting with the blackest black you can buy and the whitest white to see what kind of designs would be cool
Shame I can't post you another like for the duck masterpiece 🌟
Im very impressed, You really pushed those to their limit! Finished result is way better than anything "pro painted" on ebay
Love the ikea colour sceme in the studio.
Hi there! this is the first EonsofBattle vids I've ever seen and the most shoking for me is the paper coverring the light... are you telling me just with a paper you turn a regular lamp on a really nice fount of painting light?
Your video made my day 😀 As a painter I was very curious to see if we would be surprised. I wasn’t.
it’d be cool to see a comparison with your preferred paints, good video!
I'm surprised you didn't have to assemble these paints. ;)
Would love to see this become a series. Between this and the Apple Barrel video I'm curious as to your thoughts on other non-miniature acrylic paint brands. Stuff like Winsor & Newton, GOLDEN, Artists Loft, Amsterdam, etc.
I've got a couple GOLDEN High Flow Acrylic paints, specifically their Fluorescent Blue and Green. They seem to work well but I'm curious about other brands. Maybe just raid a Michaels or something.
Squidmar already tried this, and apparently this channel called Geek Gaming Scenics. Haven't watched that guy's video. Glad to see someone else try! It's always fun watching these kind of experimental videos!
I’m neither into war gaming nor miniature painting, but I still enjoy your content. Especially videos like these.
Hah, I love that Applebarrel Black paint too, it's so good for what it is.
Hey jay, you should try out Duncan’s “two thin coats” paint range. I personally enjoy it!! 😁
thanks for the video, last time i was at ikea i tought to get tham to just test it ^^
a video how to fix the color would be, waht if you ad some mediumß
I use a lot of those apple barrel paints. it allows me to have a huge range of colors for cheap. I still use GW paints for base coats.
you might try to check out on the wall paint sample testers. they are very cheap, (for example goodhome is 1.5 gbp per 50ml pot ), and there's wide variety of colours and types .
I never tried them on minis, but they are quite useful for painting terrain pieces and buildings on the cheap. And since they are supposed to go on house walls they tend to be quite durable.
Paint a model using various nail polishes, I’ve been wanting to try the cats eye on a chaos knight myself
Great stuff friend 👏 👍
No Gundam video day!?!
Awesome job as always,
I tried the acrylic paint set from five and under for fun....nice packaging....no Pigment
I'm glad you acknowledged that not all craft paints are total crap. I use them much much more than I admit ( especially on terrain) and there are a lot of paints out there that are totally serviceable
It ended up looking really good
Triggered when Jay tapped the green and said red lmfao. The finish job is bloody awesome!
I actually use a lot of the apple barrel paints. They are super cheap and apply far better than one would expect. I mostly use it for terrain but the blues and black are good enough for model use.
Have you tried Duncan’s Two Thin Coats range yet? If you have what video was it cause I might have missed it
The army painter spray can grey primer is amazing if anyone was looking for a good one
i think it looks great btw !!!
Almost looks blanchistsu! Love it
Have you done any other apple barrel cheap craft paint video? I really do like watching pro painters use really bad\ weird paints to attempt good minis. What about using posca paint markers to paint a mini or straight up testors enamel paints for model cars? Or even Nail polish?
I think using a matt varnish between paint payers would help build the opacity. it works for me when using blue liquitex ink, as its water activated and just rubs itself off when washing over it.
What was that book with all the space marines in it? it looked awesome
Amazing Video. Is that a 3d shoulder pad?
You made a decent marine out of crap 👍 This reminds me about my beginning in the hobby with czech tempera paints Kohinoor
paints better with ikea paints then what i do with airbrush, 30$ shareable brushes and kimera paints haha. Good job what a legend. 😆❤️👍
I use apple barrel to paint my miniatures, it's a bit thick but you know what ya do there so.
is the IKEA mala paint airbrush able and what's used for thinner water or acrylic mr color tinners
How do you avoid the liquitex white getting an oily feel? I've tried a bunch of different thinning mediums.
The desaturated grim dark look, was nice. But there’s no substitute for good paints. 😅 great job 👍🏻🇦🇺
That marine looks better than some of my stuff lol
(p.s. without titanium white I'd be lost)
Jay what’s that book you have with all the chapters in it? Looks sick
J, the bravest man braveing the worst paints known to man. Nothing but heroism in this video
Question: have you Ever tried Gouache with acrylic shud be super Matt on a mini?
I love being Swedish and being able to know what IKEA names mean
Best Patreon segue so far.
I like this this is fun, you know that Simpsons where homer invents an automatic instant makup applicator by loading paint into the barrels of a shotgun
Takes the time to carefully set up all the other hobbyist paints
Immediately shoves them off the table in favor of IKEA paint.
Classy
You should a video of the best colors or the colors that you use the most of each paint range
When it comes to cheap acrylics, a little life hack that's probably won't work that well for minis, but might be worth a shot is adding cornstarch to the paint. It's a trick artists use when painting. Minnie's might be a bit too small for it but it might make for an interesting short
When it comes to cheap paints that (sort of) work. Palmers isn't the worst, their colors are nice enough but a little thick and need some water to thin them down (valejo thinner
medium wasn't quite doing it)
Jay, as you are talking paint, I'm looking for advice on the best metallic's. I started with Citadel as most people do and then found Reaper, which I love in general but the metallic's cause me problems. I can't get them looking even on flat surfaces. Any help would be grateful.
i see how it is a pain to paint with this but i like the shadoing that it create like it strait up from a comics page
You didnt show Green Stuff World Paints in the opening sequence, have you tried their line yet?
"its a little bit too watery for my taste"
sounds like you ate it xD
I would love to hear your opinion on Scale 75
I'm so used to DankPods blowing out my ear drums whenever he reads something in all caps that I immediately took off my headphones when you read IKEA in all caps
What about AK interactive paints? I would love to see your review of them.
Happy to see someone else who uses the occasional apple barrel craft paint.
Out of curiosity, what were the ink brands you showed near the beginning of the video? That blue paint looked incredible...
we have a store in the UK called The Works that sells cheap acrylic paint I use for terrain. its not great but does the job and costs about the same as a GW pot for a 200ml tube
Yes I use them too. Also I cheated and got a dulex cookie colour that is similar to Zandri dust.
The chainsword is pretty well done (better than I could have done with normal paints xD )
I wonder how the experience would have been if you tried mixing them with some kind of acrylic medium?
I'm not going to try it though...
