Guitar Lesson: How To Play Alive by Pearl Jam
Вставка
- Опубліковано 24 лип 2024
- Who remembers the thrill, the rapt fascination, the racing heart whenever we would turn on the TV
as a kid and Pearl Jam would be performing on MTV, Letterman, or SNL. I do. After all, we couldn't just pull up anything we wanted on UA-cam in those days. A week or two of me not being able to put my guitar down as I tried to follow along with Stone Gossard would invariably ensue, and I'm sure I wore out more than a few VHS tapes in the process. I credit Pearl Jam's Alive with sparking my guitar journey, and hence with the honor of speaking with you today. With that, I humbly present you with my very best effort in our shared goal of playing Alive on our guitars along with Stone.

The most authentic breakdown you're going to see short of Stone himself joining you to walk through it (can you IMAGINE?!).
Can feel the real love and joy through the screen dude, thanks again - another to my list of 'songs you can learn to play properly now Ryan has shown you' :D
thank you for that Keeran :) Stranger things have happened ;)
I was quite disappointed he didn't walk thru
I clearly remember you uploading the campfire version of this while I was at Fenway waiting for Pearl Jam to hit the stage.
I clearly remember you coming through with a ticket for me so I could attend said show after my hookup fell through
So many memories through the years with this song playing in the background , I can’t put in words how much ‘ Alive ‘ means to me
one summer ball season I had alive in my head every time I went to bat for a month. I hit .600 that month.
When Stone was a boy, did his family call him pebble? Always fun, always helpful.
Ahh ha 👌😂
So when he’s old is he...

@@StrangerE0ns Sand? Coal? Diamond?
It’s a great question, someone should ask his brother Dwayne Johnson some day
Stone Gossard was born a man. Always been Stone lmao
This is THE best lesson on how to play Stone's part on UA-cam. Thank you Ryan
thanks doc!!
Man, I don’t care how bad a mood I’m in, by the time this song is done I am totally amped!!! 🤘🏻
and still alive!!
The wham bit just makes you appreciate how good these guys are. To come up with that 🤯
Your videos are always the best - careful, authentic recreations of the source material, helpful and relatable explanations of what you're doing and what can be tricky, and tons of infectious enthusiasm. Other UA-camrs tend to have some of these but not all. I talk up your channel to all my friends learning to play guitar - thanks for all the effort!
Thank you so much for the kind words, for spreading the word, and for your support Jeff :) I'll be hoping to get to know you at a secret stream sometime!
Best Ryan Lendt lesson I’ve ever seen! Thanks Ryan! I really liked the way you explained the chord progressions and then played them out.
thanks George!
Love it! Ten will always have a special place in my heart with Alive and Black being two of my all-time favorite songs.
i knew there was a reason I liked you TDM
I’ve been waiting for the Ryan Lendt interpretation, I knew it would take it up a notch or five..
...and you are doing the solo as well. Now that will be awesome!!
sometime!
Totally awesome! I love these deep dives. Can’t wait to re-learn this “the Ryan Lendt way”!
:) cheers good buddy. it would have sounded better on a matchless amp... ;)
Epic my friend, such a great song. I get the goose pimples when listening to it. I played this in a couple of my bands, always fun.
I think I may have heard you play it! maybe not, maybe i'm just implanting. But let's go with it :)
This channel deserves way more recognition! Keep it up man
thanks so much for that Jake!
This is one of my favourite songs and I’ve never learned to play it properly as yet. Thanks for giving me the kick up the a### needed to rectify this...cheers Ryan.
Cheers to you JT - always know I'm on the right track when I say your name :)
Ryan I thank you for teaching me so much on guitar! You make learning songs so much fun man! Thanks again!🤟🏼
it's my great pleasure June - thanks for hanging out :)
Perfect breakdown Ryan. Let's hope we can all see these guys live next year. 🎸🎤🥁
thank Alex!
Hope McCready’s legendary solo is coming next! Thanks for the tutorial Ryan🤟🏼
not next, but certainly sometime :) need to recover a bit from this one - cheers Seth!
Oh, lovely stuff, my favorite song from "ten" album, great thanks!
cheers SPJ!
Right there with ya! Recorded the entire unplugged on a VHS and wore that sucker out jamming along with my stepmoms Ovation. Thanks for sparking that memory.
fun times indeed. back when MTV played music.
Always love me some PJ!!! Ten is one of the best rock albums thanks for making me so happy~ DF
hearty agreement over here DF :)
This makes me so happy, I don’t know why but even the Kermies seem to have bigger smiles today! It’s a special song for many of us and it’s special watching you break it down. Oh, and don’t be sad. You haven’t done a ukulele version yet 😉
now I'm thinking...
This is an outstanding lesson! This song means a lot to me. I was left for dead in the early 90's from a shotgun blast at close range. Literally almost cut me in two parts. Losing organs, ribs, muscle etc. This song holds a lot of power. Each time I hear it a sense of hope, gratitude and humblness drowns out what little anger is left. Without this happening I would not have known a lot of experiences that came with such an incident. Most importantly that there is something beyond this as we see here today.
Awesome song! Thank you Ryan for showing us how to create it when we want with our own ability and level of skill.
Keep'em coming!
I can't contribute appropriately to that mind blowing story, so I will simply leave a heart and a heartfelt thank you for sharing, Mr. Windage. It's an honor to speak with you.

I went back to work as a small town city officer after. A few years in, my health just wasn't up to par so I retired.
An individual can have all the money and fame they will ever need, but without health none of it matter's.
There is something I would like to leave with you as a thought Ryan. There is something after this.
You have a gift for doing these video's my friend. People enjoy them.
Keep'em coming!
@@kentuckywindage222 May I share your story, anonymously of course, with the kind folks? Your kindness and hope despite that unfortunate event is inspirational. Please send me an email ryanlendt@gmail.com if your answer is yes - it's a bolt of lightening that I saw your reply here and I don't want to miss your answer!
That's a horrible story, man.
I hope you are feeling OK these days
😀
Depression has a hold on me at this time but the Lord will crush that with me just like all the rest. Lots of pain and health problems now but I'm blessed at the same time. Great family and friends to support me. God has a path we all will follow. Whether we want to or not. I'm just trying to do what He wants and enjoy everything in the process. I really appreciate the kind words my friend. We need more of this in the world.
🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Phenomenal teacher. Thank you.
thanks friend.
You are a very very big man!! Great job brotherway
thanks brotherway!
Finally, a version of this song thats 99.9999% accurate to the recording! Thank you for this!
thank you so much for that UMTB :)
Great stuff!!! Thanks Ryan as always.
cheers PC :)
Thank you so much for this lesson Ryan! Finally I know how to play this properly
cheers MB!
The bridge of this song is one of, if not, my favorite parts of any song. Was having so much trouble with it, thank you!
yeehaw!
For some reason the bridge of Alice reminds me a bit of the bridge in Outshined with the way it quiets down and goes in a slightly different direction compared to everything else.
Everytime I decide to sit down and learn a pearjam song, it's always a rabbit hole lol
they don't tend to be simple... jerks.
@@RyanLendt seriously, I'm working on that opening riff just wondering how they hell they even came up with that. It's awesome. Great video btw
Next to Even Flow this is one of my fave PJ tunes (*he said as he grabs his cigar box guitar*), gotta try this out (wife rolling her eyes, "well, there goes the afternoon")
great. just as I was beginning to be in your wife's good graces.
Incredible.
thanks :)
I learned the campfire version off you and it's been part of my live set ever since.. 👌👍
that's neat to know thanks PM :)
Ohhhhhh my days... he’s finally done it!!!!! Can’t wait to watch. Must be the most requested song ever!!!!!
And I got a mention.... fantastic
I have seen many different videos on this and you play it differently taking into account the live versions. This is awesome. I need to integrate this to what I know. Genius sir... genius 🤟
I reckon you and Matt should play it together in a video!!! Let’s play Alllllive... 👍👍👍
Thanks for taking the time Blade :)!
Yeaaaaah, I was waiting for this tutorial for soooooo long. 🤘 Thanks Master!! When I turn 18 (only 1 month and a bit more left), I’ll colaborate you on Patreon 😁

Lot's of great memories on this one 🤟

The BBC show... was that at Fox theatre in Georgia? I remember staying up all night to tape that show off the radio. It was worth it.
I haven't the foggiest - but the vid is on the toob. i know what you mean, one time I stayed up to start the tape on the 24 hour Get Smart marathon (not joking)
"Dudu dudut dudu..." words of a genius.
that part could just as easily be Mario Bros music
Thanks so much
Any time
Like allways. Thumbs up!
thanks armynow!
Thanks!
thanks for the turtle food Dennis!
love it
BA!
@@RyanLendt I know it’s been a while. Quarantine life
We've done Alive Campfire already, but I think we definitely one hundred percent have to do Alive Uke too. Add that to the Alive Solo and there's still plenty of Alive-ness to look forward to :)
indeed - ukulele (already started thinking) Mike's part + mike's solo + bass = 4 more alive vids! I have a forest dulcimer in the closet, hmmm...
1 chorus but many chori. Awesome
that's the grammar rule for -us, right? :)
Please show us your guitar collection!!
i have!
A lot going on here but this is excellent.
thanks MC
Very nice! Maybe we could get mind riot by soundgarden next?
great idea Jordan thank you :)
Can you do a cover of Alive and use your acoustic guitar, dark red Telecaster and SG special from Gibson, please?
So a lesson on Searching with my good eye closed by soundgarden
great idea JD thanks :)
Can you please do "having an average weekend" by shadowy men, aka the Kids In The Hall theme song, there are no tutorials anywhere and I know you would nail it, thanks!👍
just don't grape me in the mouth..
Can you please do a Mike’s part for Alive and the solo, please?
yep. that needs to be done
Otima aula..
Grarto
why thank you Nelson.
I know how to play this song, but after watching this, I dont know how to play this song, lol. Time for some practise!! :)
Practice. A word which starts to look more weird the more you practice it.
it's spelled: practississ
👍
Have you listened to jack Johnson music? You should cover his songs!
it's in the plans :)
Can you do the lesson of "rockin' in the free world" by Pearl Jam?
done that :)
Woo-hoo! Feels so Alive!
those should be the lyrics to this song :P
Sir ...here without you by 3 doors down lesson(acoustic) plz.🙏
I'm here without you babay doo doo doo doo
@@RyanLendt yess that song😅😅
Is it just me who noticed Ryan looked like a priest on guitar in this tutorial?
I noticed that out loud the last time I wore that shirt. I think if I wore a white shirt underneath that might help.. WARDROBE!
Hey, can you please take a look at cartography by Eddie vedder?
this is news to me! Thanks Ryan :)
@@RyanLendt Ryan thanking Ryan! Lol!
While in Don Mills, was this song spinning? Much music?
Also... what's the story with the duct tape? Always wondered.
haha 39 Beverage drive was only until I was 8. I didn't discover rock 'n roll until I was 12 in Mt. Lebanon, PA. The duct tape is a stone gossard tribute. anyone who can figure out why gets 4.5 points (i'm running low on points)
@@RyanLendt was it for picks?
Or protecting it from a ring?
an amazing job, but I have a suggestion... I know it would be more work, but what if you played the entire song, with playback, and then taught us? 🥰🥰 it would be amazing..lol
pleasure brother.
This is my new grunge rock God.
welcome to the party Will :)
Something about this tune makes me think of that Christopher Walken scene in Pulp Fiction.
interesting :)
Me, a scrub, who never really listened to Pearl Jam until 2006.
that just means you had a whole pile to discover all at once :)
Not playing the the Frist five times just listen 👌🏻
five against one baby ;)
This guy reminds me of Ryan....Reynolds.
my neighbor always misspells my name. While she has gone so far as to call me Greg, my favorite so far is Rhyan
Electric guitars are so cool i dont have an electric guitar😕
you must remedy this my good man
Still waiting on my Bon Jovi request dude!
Send the turtles 🐢 some greens! It will get your request higher on the list.
hehe Brian I bet he has no idea what you're talking about :)
Is that Chewie on your amp?
it's a california raisin
✌️❤️🤘
:)
I was secretly hoping this would be the last song you did, the white whale of the channel if you will. Now I'm just gonna go play "Say it Ain't So" to console myself
(Great attack, got that amp set just right)
@Pat Prime what attack? He didn't hit any bells today. Stay away from the bells. He hates these bells.
@@Nissan570Lsx you think he goes all red eyed like Scarface when the Salvation Army ringers are out in force during the holidays?
I bet he has his mini bat on him at all times just in case he sees a bell in the wild.
@@Nissan570Lsx and all that turtle money he gets from bloodied Santa's goes solely to.the mastermind behind it alll.... .... ..Terrence! It's truly diabolical

yay! i read the description - that fuzz sounds realllllyyyyy neat
