  • Doing a review of Prep pre-shave today, with a little overall discussion on pre-shaves.
From their website”What makes Prep unique
Prep Cream was originally developed in the United States in the 1860's by the Mark Allen Company.
Prep Cream is formulated from 7 special emollients and essential oils chosen for their unique soothing, cooling, and moisturising properties to form a pure, smooth hygienic cream.
Prep Cream brings immediate relief to irritated or sensitive skin leaving it feeling smooth, cool, supple and refreshed.
Prep Cream has many uses and is a one-stop skincare treatment for the whole family. Instead of a myriad of different products which clutter up the bathroom cabinet, Prep Cream is the only product for both sexes needed to give an excellent shave, treat dry skin and cracked heels, sun burn, insect bites, diaper irritation and other minor skin irritations.”

Ken, your videos are awesome. Not very many people have the guts to make videos like this, especially all the people making negative comments. You are the one putting yourself out there, you are the one shooting and editing these videos for us real wet shavers, you are the one doing giveaways, and you are the one helping and inspiring others...Not the people complaining and writing comments no one wants to read. Keep up the good work that many others are not willing or have the guts to do!

Pre-shaves certainly do work. I bought the proraso sensitive and now use it every time I shave on your recommendation.
Ken bought myself a Feather AS-D2 razor and it's just a joy. Two weeks now and not one single cut or bit of irritation. You helped with that mate. As until I watched you and a little bit of geofatboy I'd never considered DE shaving for my ultra sensitive skin. Shavings cool now and a pleasure.

Thanks for spending the time to put together all of these different videos for us. I appreciate you taking the time to read our comments and even spend your hard earned money to try things we are asking you to. You could easily say, no and leave it at that. The fact that you care enough about your viewers to try things we are asking you about (when they very well could be things that weren't already on your radar, or didn't interest you) really shows how much you care. These products cost money that you had to spend just to review for us, which helps answer our questions and allow us to make educated opinions on things. You never push anything and to speak quite honestly, the person that said it, is obviously a moron. Please, do not let ignorant people like that get to. Thanks for the videos and keep being you, Ken!

Ken, don't get upset about incompetent negative comments, it is not worth it. There are people around that just like to tease and annoy other people for their pleasure. They get their satisfaction when they see you being upset. So, just ignore them. It is another story if you get a qualified negative comment. You will recognize the difference.

It took me a long time to find Prep Creme in stock. I did purchase it with the intention of using it as a pre-shave. I have yet to do so. But, this stuff really is amazing on rough skin, abrasions, eczema, and such. It holds in moisture and makes the skin soft, which helps accelerate healing. I like it even more than Sudocrem (an Irish nappy rash and sunburn cream).

The way I look at it Ken is it is my UA-cam channel and the content of my channel is up to me. If I have a hater from time to time I just continuing doing what I want to do. I review products and I promote certain products because I feel they are a good product and a good value. Personally, I do not like spending my money (and like you I have spent plenty of MY money on this hobby) on products that end up not being what they are advertised to be, so when I hit on something that I feel will help someone I tell everyone about it and then they make their own decision as to whether or not to follow my advice. Each person can run their channel they please and I know plenty of UA-camrs who have their favorite soaps, brushes, razors, blades, etc., etc., etc. and there is no reason they shouldn't pass positive experiences with these products along. What works for one may not work for all, but that doesn't prevent the person who like the product from saying so. If a name calling hater wants to start his own channel and run it as he pleases that is up to him and I wish him luck, (it isn't as easy as it looks), but what he thinks won't cause me to change how I run mine. As far as running up prices I do not promote expensive products because I feel the prices of some shaving products have gotten out of hand, but if another person wants to buy a $300 razor or a $200 brush that is their business and doesn't concern me one way or the other. So therefore what I do shouldn't affect anyone else. Hopefully I have helped people learn about good products just as you and many other UA-camrs have done, but ultimately that is up to the purchaser. I can say I have never had a viewer tell me I have given bad advice one way or the other and I have reviewed products I didn't like and I passed those experiences along also, but just because I don't like something doesn't mean someone else won't. Keep up the good work and help people like me learn things I may or may not want to try and just ignore the ones who choose to resort to insults and calling someone a shill is an insult. Happy shaves my friend and with that I will end MY rant. :)

Great little rant in this one, good to clear things up for those who might be unsure but I think 99.9% of your viewers were already fine. I regularly use the Proraso White preshave cream (it was a game changer) and will give this Prep cream a go - not because you just sold it to me but because I'm an adult and can make my own decisions. I was looking for an unbiased opinion of it anyway and your review was helpful. Hope Valentines went well for you.

Nice Review Ken, I agree that preshave creams make a difference. Not only do they add some protection to your skin but I think they help soften the beard and enhance your lather. I try to straight razor shave at least once a week and that’s when I usually use the Proraso Green. It works great! I don’t always use it with my safety razors though as I’m usually in more of a hurry. Keep up the great vids.

Great video! Thank you. I enjoyed watching this. It was nostalgic for me in some ways. I grew up shaving with Prep Cream. Pre-shave, lather and post-shave all-in-one. During my compulsory military service in South Africa, Prep was essential and we used it for cuts, burns, insect bites and all sorts of things. I still use it today, and always have some in my bathroom cabinet. I just started shaving this week after having kept a short beard for several years. I'm envious of that lovely razor you used. I might have to treat myself to a good one soon, although the Merkur Progress is probably a teeny bit out of my price range right now. I'm thinking about buying a Vikings Blade Crusader adjustable, which is also a bit pricey, but there are elements of the design that I like and the reviews I've looked at so far have been good. Sometimes my skin is sensitive, and sometimes not. Sometimes I might want a close shave, and sometimes I might not.

You are right in what you say as far as purchasing razors and accessories. I started wet shaving in May of this year and have accumulated 20 razors and quite a few accessories and some of the razors that you used and liked I have used and don’t care for as my skin is fairly sensitive and they to aggressive for my skin but you didn’t force me to buy anything and I now have two razors that I truly enjoy shaving with and the rest are in a drawer in their boxes so some day if I decide to try them again I’ll have them in my collection. My every day razors are both RazoRock baby smooth and my blade of choice is feather and that’s a great combo for me along with proraso products. Thanks for all the great info you’ve shared and keep up the good work.

Ken, you're doing an awesome job. Your channel is among my favorites (along with Michael Freedberg's, PaulH's, Kevy's). Don't worry about the naysayers. There will always be some people who find satisfaction in criticizing others, no matter how good a job they are doing.
I really appreciate the work you're doing reviewing all the stuff you do. Since I try to split my money and my apartment space fairly among all my hobbies (plus there's some stupid spending like food and payments), I can't imagine buying everything you (and others) test and share an opinion on. So: thank you!
Also about the pre-shave: the only thing I've used so far is the Proraso green. And I do think it REALLY helps sometimes.
I usually shave after having a shower and my skin is very dry then. Some shaving soaps provide enough protection to overcome that. But others (shaving creams especially) do not. I find that my skin feels irritated just by applying lather itself (soap/cream only dries it further). And everything goes south from there. With the pre-shave, however, it's a different story. I don't remember having a bad shave using it. The only downside of the Proraso for me is that it's strong scent can overpower the soap/cream, so all you can smell is menthol. But then there's a lot of other pre-shave products to choose from.
All the best to you and your loved ones! And I hope you had a great Valentine's Day!

Also keep in mind your head is smooth and long so you can use as an aggressive razor as you like and it’ll not be bad. I use a Muhle r41 with a feather blade on my head. Most people will say that’s too aggressive for the face and they are right but it’ll glide
Over your head fairly easily and will cut quick. Also NEVER do an against the grain shave on the head. With the gran and to the side of the grain is fine but against will cause major irritation.

Hi Ken, I use 5 or 6 pre-shaves product from different brands, including Proraso green and white, but the one that for me makes a clear difference in Mickey Lee's pre-shave butter. This product not only adds slickness and protection to the shave, but does not wash off on the second or third pass, and leaves the skin soft and supple. It comes in three scents I believe, plus unscented that is my favorite.

    Roberto

I went from using safety razors for 10 years to a straight razor this summer. I did one of those "If i cant pull this off, then i dont get to be shaved" things, basically forced myself to learn. And i have now shaved with it, daily for four months. It's better, extremely close and very little irritation. I wont be going back for any foreseable future. It's better, but not as large of a qualitative jump as from mult blade cartridge razors to safety razors, it's more like "This is as good as safety razors with a cherry on top" so to speak.
But, my god how economical it becomes if you have a hunk of shaving soap and a straight razor. It's a shaving perpetuum mobile. Just shave for 3 months, strop daily, hone it once in a while and it keeps on shaving.
I imagine i'll be giving this to the grand kids one day ;)

I am one of your subscribers from Sweden and I really do enjoy your reviews. It's my impression that you were upset about someone claiming that you're shill for this or that product. It's always easy to stand on the sideline and tell someone to ignore a comment. Most of the time it's right thing to do, though. Perhaps the person really does think you are promoting certain products, but that's just another another example of subjective interpretation taken as objective truth by someone who clearly does not know the difference between the two.
Anyhow, if you should happen to find a product in Sweden that is not readily available stateside and you would like to try it, I'd be happy to send
    it to you for free.
    Keep up the good work.

Some use shavettes and a fresh blade for each customer by default, but virtually all of them also have straights on hand as well. Also, you don't have to get a full set of hones right at the beginning -- make friends with people who shave with straight razors and when yours gets dull after your first half year or so, let somebody do it for you. Many straight razor lovers love honing just as much as shaving. But stay clear from knife and scissor sharpening services that use a machine with rotating discs because they are meant for kitchen and utility knives, not razors.

Why not try an open comb razor? I am also afraid of the sraight razor. I went an open comb and love it. You let the razor do the work. You do not add much if any pressure at all. Works great.. I own an open/closed comb by Fendrihan.

@@jeffvemb2144 Definitely not opposed to using an open comb, but there's just something about being able to tout that you shave with a "cutthroat" razor.
