252: Haolonggood (好龙谷) Wuerhosaurus (2023) Review

- Erratum: This isn't HLG's first thyreophoran... I'd completely forgotten Tianzhenosaurus!
Haolonggu comes back with another oddity, the Chinese dinosaur Wuerhosaurus. This stegosaur is immediately recognizable by its short, squared-off plate. Although now questioned, this Hoalonggood gives us the traditional and dare I say, cooler stegosaur.
HLG takes a whole new level by staking up the challenge of a model this small, and yet still imbuing it with colour, detail and all in a low affordable price!

Im excited on how haolongood has reached the fine scales of pnso with their recent werhosaurus and pachyrhinosaurus but at half the price 😅, the more the competition companies have in the market, the better for us consumers
True that
Exactly! All they need to do is to sharpen up their background research and improve on their accuracy, and they will be top contenders for favourite company! Just look at the genera they've surprised us with!
Excellent review as always 😎👍.
Thank you for your praise! 😁
I wish they would do a camptasuarus, no on ever does one of the most common morison formation dinosaur.
yea i agree with you
Agree!
Absolutely agree! We need some ornithopods! Enough with the sensational, give us some of the plain and make it good!
I’m glad HLG is giving us dinosaur figures. I just hope their continued production picks up a bit to match the degree of great sculpting we got with earlier figures.
The rough, wrinkly “baggy pants” look they’ve given to a couple of their figures is hopefully just that-a couple of figures.
I have always been curious about the short height of the existing plate material and thought it odd as anything other than either a trait in progress or a vestigial remnant.
Now, hearing that the plate material is more representative of damaged or incomplete fossils, it becomes a different matter.
And the recreations that have been produced based on the scant available specimens makes it a bit harder to flesh the animal out to any degree of accuracy.
Even though it happens just based on tooth fragments, it’s sort of always going to be a shot in the dark.
So, I could be completely wrong.
This figure does benefit from a departure from the “baggy pants” look and there is good detail, overall.
I may get one to hang onto just to use as a comparative figure when more fossil material is discovered leading to updated representations.
But it will need a 100% head to tail tip repaint.
Not at all a fan of the HLG paint shop.
One man’s opinion.
I like your description of "baggy pants" look which describes those folds perfectly! I'm going to steal it for my next video should that become appropriate... though of course I hope not!
Unfortunately, HLG's paint schemes can be quite polarizing. Some I like more than others, but I think a part of me weighs that against other models at a similar price point, and when I do, then a lot is easily forgiven. How HLG keeps giving us these lower prices is astounding. I hope this isn't just a loss leader strategy!
Although I do like these, the squiggly lines, for me at least, turns their paint job into a modern art project. I just have to decide if I like the sculpt enough to buy it and give it a repaint. Nice review as always, DinosDragons!
Haha thank you, and you're right when you say "modern art project"! I think if someone knew what they were doing, a wash over them to blend them in better would make them look a lot better!
Another home run for Haolonggood, but surprisingly, I'm not too excited to have this. I think that Vitae Wuerhosaurus's figure is quite good-looking compared to this. And I'm not a big fan of the mouth area. I want to see some open mouths, dark-colored mouths, and dark paint schemes on the head area from Haolonggood. Also, if speculating counts, Vitea Wuerhosaurus has gone the extra mile and given their Wuerhosaurus those extreme shoulder spikes. So that is also a plus point. But the skin texture, plates, and overall look are quite good in Haolonggood. So I think Vitae is the only true competitor to this gorgeous-looking figure. Thank you so much for this wonderful review, my dear sir.❤
Thanks for your comment as always! Well, I believe the Vitae costs twice what this HLG costs, and it's bigger, so naturally they can do more with a larger canvas. I believe the artist from HLG has mentioned in other media that doing very small dinosaurs is quite challenging in terms of how much detail you can have, so I can see why they do simple shapes.
I actually tried to get the Vitae but was no longer able to at sane prices! 😂
this figure is really amazing my favourite is the blue and the one i ordered of course
Good choice either way!
Thank you for another great video! I enjoyed the close up shots of the figure, especially their faces.
Apart from the general consensus about a light wash and the shape of the plates, what stood out for me here was the size - I like that HLG are not afraid to do small species. This bodes well for, for eg, dromaeosaurids, or Kentrosaurus, which is supposed to be even smaller than this Wuerhosaurus (4.5m-5m). Fingers crossed!
Looking forward to your reviews on the Pachyrhinosaurus (I hope you're getting them!) and glorious Edmontonia~
Oh yes the beautiful Edmontonia! A nodosaur I've wanted forever!
With respect to the small size, I agree with you for sure. We all like a bit of sense of scale in the models in our collection, and even if not true 1:35, smaller models remind us that these were varied animals, of different shapes and sizes, and just some show of that difference lends much interest to any collection!
@@DinosDragons Imposible no apoyar tu contenido.
Blue is defintely my pick but both look adorable together, they're just little plated potatos 😊
Overall this review was pretty good & I wish you have a great day
Thank you! I certainly hope that yours has arrived!
These two are so cute!
Stegosaurs are my favourite herbivore group! Shame about the hands but I think I'll pick up one of each at some point!
HLG seems to be almost leaning into PNSO's recent 'weakness' of limiting their genus variety and capitalizing on collector restlessness there, though I'm sure their plans were firmed up long ago and independently. I can't wait to see what HLG comes up with. It's the same kind of exciting uncertainty that PNSO used to give us.
I bought the blue version, because it's out of the always green approach. Also glad to see there is some shadowing around the eyes at least! Btw a Theropod, possibly a Tyrannosaur has been teased by HAOLONGGOOD and Edmontosaurus is on it's way too, confirmed by HAOLONGGOOD. Im so excited!
Edmontonia*
@player21099 no it is edmontosaurus, they said so in the comments on one of their Instagram posts that was in development.
@@icyspy I saw it.) Thank you. It's great.
And there is still a megaraptor pending👀👀
@@player21099 Yeah I really meant Edmontosaurus :)) tho their Edmontonia looks neat too
I have a marginal preference for the dark blue/purple. But I like them both, so I've ordered a pair. I don't mind the squiggly lines, though I agree a wash would integrate them better - but I do wish there was a little more soft paint detail on the face, nothing to stark but just gentle definition. On the other hand, I'm delighted the folds and skin texture are toned down. Such an exciting firm for someone like me with a strong preference for collecting non-theropods!
For sure! The folds were just a bit much on their ceratopsians, and this one has a fineness that better befits its small size! I think HLG really has seized on an opportunity here at a time were PNSO just seems to persistent with their ideé fixe on theropods and more theropods. Believe me, the constant gripes on the Chinese forums would by now have reached them, and yet they persist. So HLG really has filled a void here, and I keep looking forward to which non-theropods they'll give us. Although I hear tell the next one is a Dilophosaurus.
I don't think you can compare Papo to this. There are many flaws in Papo's work if accuracy is important to you, and the sculpt while always good tends to be oversized at the same their models are in. Papo started off really well, such as with their Allosaurus. Somewhere along the line something happened. Their bodybuilder Brachio is nice as a model in itself, but weighed against HLG's Apatosaurus it doesn't hold up, in my opinion. Then again, it depends on what you look for in a model. 😁
The fine-scale detail is a make or break for me. Since they are planning to do edmontosaurus, if it has that kind of detailing, it's an instant buy for sure (depending on scale)
Did you mean Edmontonia? I sure would love a 1:35 Edmonotosaurus too, and preferably _annectens_ . Enough with the _regalis_ dunce cap!
Ankylosaurs are thyreophorans so no this isn’t their first thyreophorean. Also how does its size compare with the pnso mirigia?
Yes I remembered the Tianzhenosaurus as soon as I published the video and already put that in my _erratum_ box below 😊
I'll do a short clip when I get time for you wrt the PNSO Miragaia.
@@DinosDragons don’t bother, I just wanna know which is bigger
@@starbirds2464PNSO Miragaia is noticeably bigger.
@@tenkarlos oh crap. From the spines or the body alone?
@@starbirds2464 From the body alone.
I dont like how the heads kinda look like unpainted plastic, such a shame
A little bit of shading would have done wonders to elevate them for sure.
Good model, don't like too much the head and paint scheme.
Yes, I felt a little wash overall could have helped it lots.
The color scheme is a little bit underwhelming.
It's a little faint. Something a bit brighter for contrast would have helped. Then again it could also be the lighting I use. It looks better under the sun!
I have reviewed that since you wrote.
not a fan of these paintschemes. the lines look messy
Haha then you shoudl be happy to save your money!
