Tobias, as soon as you said you were going to explain the difference between a "Toothpick" and a "Fish Knife" I knew exactly where you were going. It took me until the 3 min. mark to realize that the only reason, and I mean the ONLY reason I know the difference is because you have educated me about traditional knives over the past few years. I don't know half of what you do about traditional knives. But I know about 100 times more about them than I knew a few years ago. Thank you for educating me!

Quite a terrific video as your use of example knives certainly clarifies and adds depth to the differences between a "toothpick' and a "fish" knife! Thank you!

I use to have a Colonial one with faux stag I bought on Ebay and carried it as a kid. Never used it for fishing but I wore it out and am now looking at getting a Case one. And I like that ruler.

Cipher TheDemonLord, I’ve got quite a few of those Colonials. For what they are, they are pretty nice. You can get a nice edge on them and they’ll last you a season or two fishing. Plus they are very light and carry in the pocket with no problem.
Case makes a nice fish knife as well as a nice toothpick if you can find them. I really wish they would make their 5.5 inch one more often. Thanks for watching and thanks for your input.

I believe I had a fish knife as a kid once. But never had need for the scaler or hook degouger so it faded away. Thanks Tobias for those fishing memories :-)

In the late 1800s , a French blade smith wanted to make a powder-horn style knife. These knives were large and popular. The 5" powder-horn knives were later called Texas Tooth-picks by Texas blade- smiths.

Thanks for explaining this. I have seen some Toothpicks billed as Fish Knives and thought they didn't look quite right. My Grandpa had one that had a hook remover bolster, and it got worked [he Pier fished almost every day]. I've heard the U.S. Navy put one in lifeboat survival kits, but have never seen one.

Actually both the US. Army Air Force (Later US Air Force) and the United States Navy had a one blade fish knife in their bail out kit. I have a Camillus made one from WWII. I guess that knife probably deserves a video if I haven't done it already.

They also have them with a second (tool) blade. They added things so they could sell them in stricter knife market's.

A fish knife, is a Toothpick pattern with 1 combo use clip blade with a descaler spine and a hook disgorger for the tip, or a 2 blade configuration with clip blade, combo scaler hook remover bottle opener. However not all fish knives are built on Toothpick frames. Sizes can vary from 3" to 5 1/2 " overall handle length. Blade combinations can vary from maker to maker. I have a couple of old Saber fish knives on the Toothpick frame from the late 60's early 70's. With bails.

Cool cap opener on the white fish knife! Love the collection. Who made the knife with the fish hooks etched in the side?

Say Heah, Maybe its because alot use a Toothpick to clean a fish, like Bluegills, But especially filleting fish. Just because it doesn't have a Fish Scaled. But even if it has a Fish Skaler you van still use it for cleaning small game. I have two Swish aArmy Knives that have Fish Scaled. one Vic. and a Imperial. I mostly use them for their Corkscrew and Awl, Oh and the Can Opener to open my can of pork and beans. But your absolutely correct.,,.

paulie 4x using that philosophy means any knife can be a fish knife. A muskrat has two blades identical to the toothpick and can be handy for processing fish. Trappers can also be used. My father in law carried a Boy Scout knife for his fishing chores.
It comes down to form vs function. The toothpick is a skinner and makes an excellent knife for small game, including fish but the pattern is known as a toothpick (form).
A fish-knife, on the other hand, can be based on numerous patterns but it has some feature designed specifically to make processing fish easier or to aid the angler with other fishing chores (function).
So yes, you can use a toothpick for processing fish. You can also cutting your steak, or cutting up boxes. But that doesn't make it a steak knife or a box cutter.

I agree with you 100%. I hate being cheated with a knife that comes in just shy of five inches.

Yep, and if you read the history of the toothpick it was a fighting knife and was made kind of like a French knife that I can't spell.
