- Have a look at a before and after cleaning of an old, rusty Imperial Fisherman's knife I bought from ebay. Though not a tutorial, I discuss the basic steps I used to remove the rust, get the blade action snappy, polish, and shine to make it fit for display.

That is a lovely wee knife! Any knife with a fish on the covers is something I would take for my collection🐟
Nothing at all rare, but looks good all the same. Thanks Ian.
Great job, it’s nice to see older knives being refurbished.
Good to see you here Mr. Barlow. "Mr. Sowbelly" thanks you.
Love that you gave new life to an old Fish. It looks fantastic. I would watch if you made a video of the actual restoration process. Great video!
Wow, nice of you to say. A video like that would have to be heavily edited down, though more practical now that I know what steps I'd take in advance. Thanks Susan.
Great job. I always love to hear how people clean up old knives!
Glad you enjoyed the video Tobias. Like the Wally Marshall I'm a sucker for a cool fish shield.
Thank you for the review on the Imperial fishing knife. I bought my first one in 1961 at the age of 14 .Such good memories of the Imperial brand of knives . In the part of Texas that I lived in Case brand pretty much ruled ,but those Imperial knives could and did take a good edge and cleaned a bunch of game . Thanks again.
Thanks T Bone, these come up on ebay quite often and I couldn't resist that fish shield.
Good restoration of an Imperial toothpick twin blade fishing knife. I picked up one at a swap meet this week, great knives
Looks good! That’s a cool old knife, and I’m glad you cleaned it up. Like that fishy shield.
Thank you Su. Turned out to be a fun, affordable little project.
That’s a really good job you did on that fisherman’s Knife. I have recently been getting into pocket knife collecting past year and a half. And I have been doing similar techniques with really nice results similar to yours. Good stuff.
There's more than one way to go about it, so ultimately it's up to the user to decide, but hopefully the video was useful. Thanks Scott.
What good memories. I had that exact same version of knife when I was a kid back in the early 80s. Mine was carbon steel made in Ireland. Gave about $4.50 for it NIB at a store called Sky City (now gone) in North Carolina. My dad always got me a chocolate drink called a Brownie, and a Zero candy bar before we went fishing. I used that knife's bottle opener in my tackle box to open the drink😊
Great memories, Rex. Thanks for sharing. I've shopped at Sky City too back in the early 80's. Good times.
That came out fantastic. Nice job saving an old gem.👍👍
The blades came around nicely I thought. It's a good way to waste away 3 hours, and very therapeutic. Thanks Steve.
Cool knife. I like the fish shield. I didn’t know the imperial line was a carry over from the made in the USA era. I may start looking for older made in USA Schrade models if they are still easy to find at a low price.
The USA made imperials are still pretty affordable. They were always made to be budget knives. The older Schrade Imperial Old Timer and Uncle Henry USA made stuff fetches a bit more and there is higher demand for those. Thanks Pietro.
At one time every hardware store had an Imperial Knife display.
I don't doubt, it seems they are everywhere on ebay. Attractive looking knives, even if not well built.
Killer blade&killer vid knife bro!! I did the same thing with a Imperial Barlow I bought at a flea market.
Glad you like the fish knife. Cheap and cool looking.
As far as vintage shell scales knives go that turned out pretty well without a full restoration. I have 2 Richards of Sheffield knives from a junk shop with the shell scales. Occasionally they get taken out of the drawer, looked at and put back again. It would be hard to justify the time it would take to restore them but it might happen one day.
Thanks. I felt it was worth the effort in the end. Not for everyone I know.
I like the shield
🐟👍
That looks great. I got lucky with my Imperial fish knife & mine is almost brand new looking. On old knives, I mainly want to remove rust. I don't try to get it looking brand new, because old knives have character. There are many ways to remove rust. Electrolysis, chemicals, sandpaper, vinegar, buffing, etc.
The back side of a small toothpick knife works really well for getting inside the knife channel. More sturdy than wood & it's kind of cool using a knife to clean a knife.
Thanks William. I've not done a lot of work with older knives so it was something of a learning process. I enjoyed it quite a bit so I likely be looking for more such candidates to do future projects.
You can pick up older knives for a lot less money, if they have some rust and dirty looks to them. A lot of people don't realize that most of the time it's just surface rust & there is a really nice knife hiding under it.
Great job!
Thank you for dropping in James. Take care.
Thank you TK, a great restoration, looks great. I found one a couple years ago in Flea market it was well gone, I managed to a salvage the main and turned it into a fixed blade knife, if you are interested I will post it on Instagram shortly.
Anyway great work
Take care
Sam

Great restoration! I have an old fish knife also. I may try cleaning it up a little more, it is not as nice as yours. Good video!
