    One thing that should be noted is that on the “true GMT” watches, you need to rotate the hour hand 24 hours to change the date forward or backward. There is no quickset for the date. But you do get the benefit of going backwards on the date wheel.

      True, but that's only five times a year provided you keep it wound. I'll take that as a small price to pay for the "true GMT" convenience when travelling.

    Thanks for the explanation with the jumping hour hand versus the regular sw330-1 movement. I also have a glycine airman base 22 (gl0203) with the red GMT hand. My setup is:
    GMT - on GMT time (UTC - 0)
    3-Hand - on local time
    24 hr bezel - on travel time (local time 24/hr when not traveling)
    I prefer this setup, and I think its much easier to adjust when going in and out of timezones. The Glycine is just so nice that there are 3 ways to track timzones.

      This is what I do as well. Effectively tracking 3 time zones.

    I bought this Ocean Star some days a go, and i can say that i enjoy this watch. Since i travel frequently across European timezones i appreciate the jump-hour feature a lot. The 24 hours hand keeps track of the NYSE opening times. Very practical. Like my other MIDO (multifort) watch the Ocean Star is very well factory regulated. One thing to complain, due to the fact that the minute and hour hand are only partially lumed, the legibility during nighttimes is not the best.

      I agree the lume is pretty weak. Can only really see it when going straight from bright to dark. Not a typical situation. Still love the watch and functionality

    The clearest explanation I've yet seen of the difference between the two types of "GMT" movement. I'm in the market for a GMT at the moment, and it's a function I will use a lot. There are so many lovely and affordable "Office" GMT watches out there and I've been very tempted, but I just know I'd be frustrated every time I used them when travelling. I've pretty much settled on the Mido due to its True GMT function in an affordable package. This vid just reinforced my decision. The alternative would be the Longines Spirit Zulutime, but that's quite a bit more expensive and lacks the diver's bezel. I think that's actually quite a useful addition when travelling. Useful for keeping an eye on train / flight connection times, etc.

    • @TyphonLeTitan
      @TyphonLeTitan 7 місяців тому

      Frustrating? It doesnt take you a lot to be frustrated my friend 😂 and a office gmt is probably by far easier to set than a traveller gmt.

    I get this one in Blue and Red (special edition), ceramic bezel, silicon hairspring, steel 316L, beautiful hands, jumping hours.
    This watch hits far above than its weight class.
    Is not COSC but kept the time inside COSC parameters.
    Best bargain ❤

      With the red and blue, you get the extra strap which goes beautifully with the watch. I did have to have mine serviced when I first bought it. GMT hand would not follow the time. Has been good since.

      Agreed.
      The Ocean Star in general and the Heritage Ocean Star seem to have been good for them, but honestly: I can't go past Certina atm. The DS PH200M they 're-issued' in '18 is a ɢʀᴇᴀᴛ piece, and the DS Chronograph re-issue of a mid 40'sAgreed.

      Love Mido too, but Certina is more affordable and the quality is (in my limited experience) pretty much on par.

    I believe Ball also recently introduced a "true" gmt with screwed pushers at 8 and 10. I like this complication and how it's getting into more affordable brands and models.

    That is one amazing watch. As I no longer dive, it’s a pass for me. Back when I was making a good living and taking two dive trips a year to various parts of the world, this would have been an amazing watch to have. Life changes, along with needs. Now is very cool. That’s too rich for me in my current phase of live. Ool review Rob!

    ETA 2893-2 GMT movement = At Work GMT
    True GMT movement in this watch and the like = Traveler's GMT
    The latter is better, wish more brands would use it and put it into something smaller. The two I know of are larger than I'd want at 44mm and long lug to lug of at least 50mm and thickness maybe kind of thick over 13mm.
    However, if you're like me and dont really travel much, the more commonly used ETA 2893-2 (or Sellita equivalent) will be sufficient to track time zones away from your home time.

    Almost everything about this watch is perfect. Fantastic build quality, well-priced and good looking. The one thing that is devastatingly wrong though is the hands. The GMT hand is far too large for its function as a secondary complication. It should be much more discrete. The skeletonizing of the minute hand reduces its legibility even in broad daylight. Viewing the time in the dark is almost impossible. The huge lume section on the GMT hands obscures the applied markers, and the lume potion of the minute hand gets completely lost in front of the markers, and is outshone by the GMT lume. I bought this watch because I like Mido, they are good watches, and I needed a diver/GMT for my diving trips abroad, but I’ve found that I don’t like it much because of it’s legibility.

    I just got a 44 mill dive watch but it’s 12 mill thick. It wears great because it sits tight to the wrist… Otherwise I find 44 Mill Way too big for my 7 1/2 inch wrist…Thanks for the review!

    New hodinkee collab provides the movement in a 40.5mm case with thickness at 13.43mm, about the same thickness, but sure doesn’t look or feel like on wrist, prob bc about 2 mm is boxed domed crystal on collab version. I have both.

    Tough to find a TRUE GMT automatic at this price level though granted it's not COSC. Otherwise only a few older Omegas, GS, or Tudor GMT could get you in at 2k-4k range. Think Alpina makes one too.

    That’s a nice watch. The jumping hour hand is also featured on the newer planet ocean models as well. It’s nice feature in a non GMT watch. I have a watch with the ETA 2893 GMT movement, wish it had this feature on it.

    I have the blue version of this watch, I cannot say enough about the watch, Totally love it. The day it arrived my son put it on and I have to fight to get it off his wrist for a few days lol, I usually let him wear my Tudor BB GMT in place of it, but to add I put it on a Nato strap and it is fantastic looking and working watch. Also it's a great watch to wear when you cannot travel with the Tudor or the Rolex GMT. Sorry in my opinion some countries aren't as safe as the U.S.A. when traveling around, Great video and thanks for your opinion.

    That's a good lookin' watch. And an example of how to do a 3 o'clock date display cleanly & effectively. Love the dial. There is something about a large orange GMT hand: never seen one I didn't like!
    That polished centre-link on the bracelet though?... No thanks! Too much extra bling + a finger print & scratch magnet. Great mov't, would be a great piece on the right strap.

    If you know the timezone you can definitely define the time with a regular analog watch

  • @Sportvent
    @Sportvent 2 роки тому +1

    Are you able to change the date on its own? There should be a position 2 where you can change the date ( standard, basic function on all analogue watches). I looked at two of these watches at Macy's and both have no second position where I can just change the date. very peculiar. Are you able to change the date on yours? thanks.

    • @RandomRobReviews
      @RandomRobReviews  2 роки тому

      Good question. So with this style gmt (like Rolex too) you change the date by rotating the jump hour hand around. Takes more time to do this but, having the hump hour hand makes for fast adjusting while travel.

    • @RandomRobReviews
      @RandomRobReviews  2 роки тому

      You rotate hour hand around couple times and it moves date forward or backwards depending what way you spin it and you need to go.

    Hey Rob.
    How are you 'connecting' with the Glycine Airman?
    I have the same piece - but in the Purist config.
    Absolutely love it. The rounded case form, the dimensions - the lugs particularly. The legibility is good for a cream dial, even the strap is good.... + I've ᴀʟᴡᴀʏs wanted a 24hr dial.
    But...it doesn't get much wrist time. I'm thinking of flipping it for an Airman DC-4 or the Ltd. Ed. 'Noon'.

    • @mchoch4576
      @mchoch4576 3 роки тому +1

      I don't know about the Rubber band, but I put a regular Nato strap I have the Blue version of the watch and it is awesome looking and I swim, shower with the watch, no issues what so ever and very comfortable too. Barton Silicone straps look ok with the watch but as good these straps are they wear down kind of quickly, reason why I went to the Nato strap for it. Good luck and all the best.
