I'm not Poolhallshark, but I'm happy as well! I've supported Sharkey's request, so I want to be credited in your list of who suggested what.... :D

You might enjoy to hear a newer one by Natalia, it's called "Muerte" and is a thank you to death for making her feel alive. Natalia told a story about how she tried to sing it during the recording sessions, again and again, but it didn't come out right (for her), so finally one of her musicians suggested she just tells the lyrics she wrote like a poem, and that's exactly what she did, over a very driving acoustic beat, it turned out a complete masterpiece (we all know she can sing like a bird, but she chose not to in this hauntingly beautiful track)

(it says lyric video, but it actually has very beautifully filmed b/w footage of the live recording session + the lyrics in Spanish and English)

@@AleksReacts lol, I didn't want to get mentioned, I just want to go on that list you mentioned to Peter... :) - and I want you to react to Muerte, that is what she can do today (see my other comment) - this is so intense and great, freaks me out every time... the music!!! Has a legend on guitar as well, Marc Ribot, played for years with Tom waits and many others...PHS will approve :)

I can't believe you don't know that you are on the list 14 times now. 🤣 Every song you ever suggested is on there, including Muerte now (so it's 14 times today).
Also, you should get mentioned, as you happily supported Sharkster in getting this one done. I was only joking with the "formal vs. informal" requests.😉 It took a whole month for it to get unblocked (I recorded this one literally a month ago), but it's finally up for both of you guys and I am very glad I did hear it.

Hola Aleks, I just remembered another, very beautiful instrumental version of this tune. It is by Giora Feidman, a famous clarinetist in Klezmer (Jiddish) muzac. This was actually how I got to know this beautiful song, it's even more beautiful in Giora's version, as it is without the sad lyrics... Giora knows how to make his clarinet sing, great musician... About 30 years ago I had bought his CD "Clarinetango" which holds this tune, and me and a friend went for a holiday in Italy, and even though we had other CDs in the car, this music fit our mood and the landscape so well that we left it in the player for the entire duration of our trip, which was for about a week or 10 days, and played it whenever we were driving, in my estimation we've listened to that CD for about 30 times or more while on the road, it was the soundtrack for our vacation. The whole album is just wonderful if you like both Klezmer and Tango, amazing fusion, but as you're very familiar with Alfonsina by now, you might enjoy to get to know Giora with this melody... Peace out!

Thank you, Dominik! This is the 8th version that's been recommended to me, and along with Dulce Pontes, Tosca and Fabia Rebordao it might make-up another series of reactions to this particular song. Since Natalia's version closes the first series, there will be a looooooong break, but I think I will at some point go back to this song and see how these 4 different artists covered it.
I'm sure that like you, many people have memories related to each version, as we all often stumble upon a song that just makes a little part of our life more enjoyable and then evokes that memory whenever we hear it. Sounds like Giora's version is the one that does that to you. 😊

Greetings from Scotland! I haven't heard this before (by any artist) and I agree, that intro on the acoustic guitar was crisp wasn't it! Beautiful. Then she starts singing and it was like I had an electric shock! Ooof! I also would have liked it better if it was slightly faster, but it was very interesting nevertheless. However, I didn't get anything from the dance interpretation, but I didn't read the lyrics, maybe I'll watch the original video later, just to see if it helps.

Hello, Peter! I think I talked too much in the video itself, so you definitely know how the song affected me, but if you haven't heard Mercedes Sosa, I think you will like it even more. She remains my 1st choice for this song, even with Lara, Pelageya and Natalia each doing their own excellent versions.

Great confusion on my part-I only saw the word "mar" and too quickly assumed it was Fado. In another life, before I turned my ears eastward, weary of Western sounds, I loved Fado. So, I thought, why not ? Oooops, in my utter lack of bearings, I landed in Spain… but no, it didn’t seem Spanish either. Ah yes, after checking, it turns out to be Mexican. And at the end of this interesting journey with Natalia, I realized I’d joined halfway through. I’d missed the previous three renditions.
I love singer comparisons, a formula far too rare among reactors. It opens up the song, giving it an almost timeless, if not universal, breath. So, I continued the journey with you through the three other performers, two of whom I already knew : Lara (cause I’m French) and Pelageya (as she had the good sense to be born to the east of France). And you were right; Pelageya is no stranger to Latin songs. One must witness her unforgettable duet with Elmira Kalimullina on "Canção do Mar" (this time actually Portuguese). It’s of a beauty unmatched… even in Portugal.
What to say in a few words about these four renditions ? Two touched me particularly : Pelageya's, for this Russian-Latin emotion sublimated in vocal perfection, and Mercedes', whose flavor of sadness (blended with what you call a lullaby) came closest to the Fado I had originally expected at the journey's start (pardon for this atrocious cultural mix-up). Lara, too classically romantic, didn’t seem to differ at all from her French, Italian, or English performances. And with Natalia, the song seemed to dissolve not only into the sea but also into this video, not without its cinematic qualities.
One final note regarding breast cancer as the song’s backdrop. It also painfully reminded me of the loss of two singers I loved dearly : Yao Bei Na and Patricia Janeckova, both taken in the beauty and gentleness of their youth.
Thank you for this journey in such excellent company. You made my day.

Well, this is a confusing, yet very entertaining, informative and interesting comment. 😂
For me, however much I do like and find something beautiful in each of the versions, Mercedes Sosa remains the best one and the one that hit the hardest. I did read the whole post and literally enjoyed reading each sentence, but you have achieved something not many do - you have left me somewhat speechless (which in my case manifests in more blabber). 🤣
Therefore, I shall shut myself up and return the thanks for being with me on this journey!
Yes, I did note the Pelageya & Elmira Kalimullina duet that I do plan to hear relatively soon (at least before EOY).
Thank you so much, your comment was a treat!

again I find myself in agreement with you. Not a bad version, and generally I like slow songs. But this was a bit too much for me, and while many would find the video beautiful artform, it didn't really speak to me that much. Don't misunderstand me, this version of the song is good. I might listen to this if I need to relax or wind down after a stressful day.

Natalia me encanta! 😍 The different enunciation you referred to is due to her Mexican accent, I guess… This is a beautiful rendition of this song and, although I find the video quite poetic and, as you very assertively said, profoundly sad, I kind of prefer her singing this live. There’s an acoustic version that I think you’d have liked more, since it’s not so slow… My favourite Natalia’s song tho, is “Soledad y el Mar”, maybe you could add it to your “endless” spreadsheet, Aleks. It’s really beautiful.

Another great “latina” singer that deserves some attention is Gaby Moreno. Here’s my fave from her, “Luna de Xelajú”, a duet with Oscar Isaac. Yes, the actor. He’s not just super hot 🫣 and a great actor… he also sings and plays the guitar quite beautifully. They’re great friends, both from Guatemala.

Thank you so much, Raquel! ❤ I'll check out the live version as well, I'd like to hear a "faster" performance of this one. I do enjoy Natalia's voice, it's very clear and beautiful and I am guessing this was intentionally slow, as the sadness deepens somehow... It may also be the fact that I heard many versions one after the other, so one cannot help but compare them.
I can't believe I had to look up Oscar Isaac to remember who he is - see singers I remember, actors I forget easily (except their faces).
You already know I added both suggestions to the infinite list. One thing I know is that I'm never going to run out of songs to listen to and react to... and here I was thinking I heard so much in my lifetime that there just isn't anything new to hear. Boy, was I wrong (thankfully) 🤣

Natalia has a remarkable voice and is one of the most appreciated Mexican singers who has been able to mix tradition with the most modern rhythms of pop/rock. A whole new world (another) is opened up about Mexican song, often relegated to the stereotyped by classic mariachis, but especially about female voices there would be a lot to say. This is a link where there is an interesting and different interpretation of a Mexican classic sung by Angela Aguilar (the future, 21 years old), Natalia Lafourcade (the present, 40 years old) and Aida Cuevas (the past, 61 years old), three different voices in addition to the fantastic clothes. 😍

      Thank you for this song!
I really enjoy traditional music as it seems to speak about the culture so loudly (not literally, of course). Also, there is something about Latin voices and the technique of singing. When they rise and open up it sounds like a sound-wall breaking. Do you think I should listen to this on my own or should this be a reaction as well?
