Hi, Aleks! Greetings from Germany! It's always nice to see people discovering AnnenMayKantereit and their music for the first time. AnnenMayKantereit (or AMK for short) is the name of the band consisting of Christopher Annen (guitar), Henning May (vocals, piano, ukulele etc. etc.) and Severin Kantereit (drums, percussion, guitar) - they had several bass players and guest musicians over the years. They met at high school in their hometown of Cologne and immediately after graduating in 2011 they started playing music on the streets of Cologne as street musicians. Their friend Martin Lamberty started filming some of their performances and songs, which were published on their youtube channel and made them somewhat famous - mainly because of the phenomenon that is Henning's voice. They started playing small concerts, released their first album in 2013 and have been getting bigger and bigger ever since. During their last tour in the summer of 2023, they filled stadiums with 40,000 people. There are a lot of wonderful AMK songs to discover - many of their German originals, but also many English covers they did in collaboration with other bands they were touring with at the time. Those collaborative Englisch covers (“Roxanne”, “Tom’s Diner”, “Can’t Get You out of my Head” and some others) have become something of an international phenomenon in recent years - also mainly due to Henning May's voice. This song, "Barfuß am Klavier", is obviously performed by Henning May alone, without his bandmates. He was about 21 or 22 when the video was shot. "Barfuß am Klavier" is the first song he ever wrote, when he was 17.
Greetings to Germany! This discovery was a great one, he's excellent, adorable and humorous. I loved this song for real. It can make one both laugh and cry, depending on the mood of the listener. Not to mention that he's got a great, raspy yet very pleasant voice. Thank you so much for all the additional information, I do plan to find out more about them, especially the German originals. ❤️❤️❤️
He and his friends are know in his hometown Cologne (Köln). He wrote a song about homesickness. In the song he talks to his friend Tommy from childhood days. so "TOMMY" is now like an anthem in Cologne. Every citizen knows this song today. Listen to the version from 2023 in the Cologne stadium, where about 40,000 of 50,000 people sing this song whith those 3 guys, ist is chilling. EfG
Thank you, Elmar! As I am truly delighted by him, I will react to AnnenMayKantereit more. Your suggestion sounds like a rather interesting experience and of course, I've gone and added it to the list.
@@winterlinde5395 No, I think a lot of people feel likewise. For me it is my hometown Stuttgart, smaller and grittier but my hometown, I was born into.
I'm not even close, but I really enjoyed it to the max. A friend of mine who has been a fan of theirs for years which I only found out yesterday told me that "I wasn't delighted enough". She watched the video without me knowing it. I was like, YES, I WAS, it was just hard to follow lyrics from memory, so I concentrated on that so much that my feelings didn't show enough. This was a great find, thanks to Gerda.
@@AleksReacts Dear Aleks, a not nativ language is always difficult. Enjoy, react as you see fit and then we can "talk" it out in the comments. Dear, have a pleasant weekend. EfG
Dear Alex, he is older than he looks. His voice remembers strongly of Louis Armstrong. He is Henning May, he founded the band with Christopher Annen and Severin Kantereit. Last year, summer 2023 they had concerts all over Germany. At home the played at the sold out stadium with over 50,000 people. There are videos on YT. I am sure you will enjoy this band. Elmar from Germany
Oh, I don't know. Louis Armstrong had a different quality to his voice and he used to add a lot more "embellishments" when signing. I know his music well and I do like it, but Henning May did not remind me of Satchmo. I don't think I've heard a voice like this one singing in this raw style with not to many changes to the melody. I actually loved that about the song - so simple, so poignant. You're already right, I'm very much enjoying hearing him sing. Thank you and greetings to Germany! There's much to be proud of with this guy representing German music! ❤❤❤
Hey Elmar, it's a nice surprise to see you here as well. It seems Aleks is attracting all of my YT fans to her channel... How are you doing? I decided to write you in English, so Aleks can understand our conversation without having to use a translator, we have nothing to hide, have we? In the worst case it's absolutely boring for her to read our chat... :) - Over here we had the first slight frost two nights ago, but it wasn't much below zero and only a few hours in the morning, so far only the pumpkins are done, but beans are still alive and I'm hoping for a few more mild and sunny days in order to be able more grown out beans for seed next year... Do you have a garden as well? Peace and love from BavaRAYEa!
@@Hundhammer Hey Dominik, good to hear from you, Hear near Stuttgart, we have temperatures around 15-20 Celsius on the days and now even at night. We do have a little green strip on one side of our Multi-Appartement-House and a friend of ours does the garden and housekeeping. We went to Hamburg in late September to visit the MiniaturWunderland and taking in the sights. But the best to happen to me, was the Jazzy version of Miss Angelinas "Bad Valentine". Now I am also a fan of the band from Cologne AnnenMayKantereit and also of VoicePlay. After my heavy fall in summer the doctor said that just a little bit of Bone splintered on the outside of my left hand, but nothing serious. You know shit happens. By chance we saw in Hamburg the ship we will be on in September next year on our way tpo the North Kap. Finally a dream of the wife and me is coming true. Yours truly from the Rems-Valley in Swabia.
Oh! I really liked this! Very compelling in my opinion. Nice to see someone so young playing and singing so honestly and unpretentiousness like this. Gives me hope! I quite like simplicity and acoustic music. Nice reaction, as always, Aleks. Thanks for showing me this, bc I think I’d never have listened to this guy if it wasn’t through your channel. 🙌🏻
Thank you so much! Btw, I can't believe you found it! It isn't even published, it's currently unlisted. 😂 I loved it for the exact same reasons you described. Literally only @GerdaTw requested this, but I was feeling adventurous and boy, did it pay off. 😉 More than that, I love that I'm not the only one discovering new music, it's way more fun to do it in good company. Thank you for being part of that good company. ❤❤❤
@@AleksReactsOoops! Was I not supposed to see it? 🫣 It literally showed up on my feed! Maybe it was a bug. A good one, on my part. But, sorry…not sorry… 😂 Bc I really liked it. ☺️
I don't know what it was, but it was very cool. 😂 Also, it will be up in like half an hour or so. Why are YOU up so early? I mean it's dawn over there.
This "kid" - Henning May - was born in 1992 and is 32 years old today. When the video was recorded 9 years ago ha ws 23. I LOVE this video and the song so much 😍🤩😍 You should watch other videos from him and his group AMK. His voice is from outer space. Kind regards from Germany.
Even then he's kind of a kid, as I started high school in 1992. 😂 Honestly, he seemed like he was 14 here, although it was clear he was around 20 at the time of the video. Can't help it, I started high school in 1992. Regardless, I also LOVED this song and his voice and sense of humor. I will listen to more. He's got me hooked. Greetings to Germany. ❤️❤️❤️
@@AleksReacts so I will call you baby girl... Hey baby girl instead of hey Aleks🤣, see you on the next one baby girl! Yeah, I like that, if you like it as well we can keep that...
It is said that this original title by AMK was the initial spark for their career when it was released on UA-cam. Starting as street musicians in Cologne, they now fill entire football stadiums in Germany and are equated with bands like Rammstein, Die Toten Hosen, Die Ärzte, or Herbert Grönemeyer.
From the moment I heard it until today I am still firmly in love with this song. Honestly, I wish I heard it when I was a teenager... Imagine the effect at that age, when you're hopelessly in love. 😂 Oh, it's been so long since I heard the band name Die Toten Hosen, thanks for reminding me of them. You know, I should check out more German music. I've only heard a few songs, mainly those that were internationally big. For example, of course I heard Rammstein's Du Hast, but not many more by them... I'll jot these down for further inspiration, if you don't mind.
I loved this, this is down my alley (or one of them, haha). Great reaction. The street recording reminded me of one of my favorite music-related films "Begin Again" - such a great movie, you should watch it.
Thank you so much! I loved it as well, so unassuming, but great! I was looking for a good movie to watch, been binge watching series I've seen multiple times, this might be just what I need. Thank you!
@@AleksReacts It's a film about two people going through a tough time. A singer/songwriter and a producer. It's about music, love, sentimentality and a little comedy. Heartwarming. I'm beginning to know you a little - I think you'll love it ❤ It's becoming more and more difficult to find good films as the years go by. I have no patience for mediocre films now. I turn off half of the films I start these days, so I'm not really watching that many anymore. I do seem to come back to this channel for more, though 🤣
Music, love, sentimentality and a little comedy sounds exactly like something I would really enjoy. I was going to find out where I can watch "Begin Again" and it turns out I have actually seen it! So, you were right - I did like it! 😊 Also, I thought this channel would just be around and no one would watch it. Turns out I met so many great people though it, yourself included. Thank you for that! ❤
@@AleksReacts A shame you had seen it, but I'm glad I was right. And thanks for looking into it ❤ I might re-watch it one of these days actually. And yes, a reaction channel is a lot about the social aspect around the subject matter. And your audience trying to figure out what video will be most fun to see a reaction of.
It doesn't stop me from seeing it again, like you. 😂 You should see me trying to figure out what to react to next with so many suggestions. I pretty much look like an old lady peering into the well and getting her fortune read from beans, wondering "will I like this one, is the title appealing, what would this be about, oh heck, I'll just dive in and scrap it if it's really bad" 🤣🤣🤣
Just found your reaction and enjoyed it very much! ❤ I was lucky to see the "kid" live onstage last summer and it was such a great experience! Henning's voice is just amazing (and really everybody who hears him for the first time goes like WHAT the...?!!! A babyface and THIS voice?!!!)! Try more (Ich geh heut nicht mehr tanzen Proberaum Session, Ozean, Pocahontas,....), you won't be disappointed. They sing some great covers, too, for example Can't get you out of my head (Kylie Minogue) together with another Band or "Bang Bang" (the music of "Kill Bill"). Love from Germany ❤
Thank you so much! I enjoyed hearing Henning May for the first time. What you wrote is exactly what was going through my mind, 12 going on 75. 😂 Ah, I have in fact reacted to Ich geh heut nicht mehr tanzen, you can easily find it as there's a list of reactions to each artist under the video. Then again, you are the first to point me to Bang Bang, though my plan is to go for Tom's Diner next after two songs in German. Love to Germany, I'm glad you've joined some other really cool people from Germany on the channel! ❤❤❤
@@AleksReactsOkay, I looked up for more of your AMK reactions but didn't find them, now I know where to find them, I'll check it out as soon as possible and I am looking forward to more of your reactions! ❤There are so many great artists over here (and all over this planet)! 👍
Thank you so much! I am very glad you found the 2nd one I did. I can tell you that I plan to hear more from AMK and agree with you that some great music can be found around the globe. We have years to explore it and I do hope you'll enjoy the choices and the journey. ❤❤❤
Nice reaction, Aleks! My good friend Dominik Hundhammer introduced me to this artist a little over a year ago, and I really like it. I haven't listened as much as HE would have liked, because there is not enough time...LOL Just now I told him that you have done this reaction, so I'm sure he'll be in the comments😆 Take care and have a great week ahead! Love from Sharky Boy ♥♥♥
Thank you! I think I fell in love with this song, entirely, just fully, right away! Actually, I have a friend who's about Henning May's age and he's a poet. An actual poet, with published work. Henning is who my friend would have been if he was also musical. Guess I might be on Dominik's side of this "battle" in getting you to hear more of their music. 😉 Not to worry, though, AJ will soon be back, I've already prepared a reaction to your favorite as well. Love to you Sharkster! ❤❤❤
Hey Poolster (how about that? 🤣), thanks for letting me know! I love how Aleks is branching out and suggested AMK's "Ich geh' heut nicht mehr tanzen (Proberaum Session)" and Hennings solo "Your Song" Elton John Cover, I think you've listened to these? - This is a very nice community, thanks for introducing me! Did you see, our friend in Diana, Peter Howells from Scotland is here as well... Now for me the only entity missing is RAYE, but I'm confident Aleks won't be able to avoid her for very much longer... :D No to-do-list can justify living under a rock forever...
@@Hundhammer Yes, I have definitely listened to those and second your suggestions 🙂 And I'm SURE that Raye will come down the line as well. Aleks is one of my absolute favorite reactors, and I am absolutely positive that you will love her just as much 🙂 Take care, buddy! You may want to watch her reactions to Alfonsina Y El Mar. Sosa's version is amazing of course, and still she hasn't reacted to Natalia Lafourcade's version, but I am expecting it shortly. Let's see if we can bring her on to Nataliea's world as well 🙂
Dear Aleks, So sorry that I dindn't react earlier. But I loved your reaction. I'm glad it did put a smile on your face. I follow them for the last 8 or 9 years. Most people will know Henning from the viral videos of the English covers like Tom's Diner, Roxanne, and Can't Get You Out Of My Head. Toms's Diner was for a lot of people a recalation because he made Suzan Vega's simple song into a delight. But this was the best way to meet Henning I think. But please look into these as wel. My absolute German favorits next to this one are Oft gefragt and Tommi. Songs you keep humming with a smile, just like Barfuß Am Klavier. Once again, thank you and sorry for late reaction, but this one slipped under the radar for me. A few really hectic days 5 to 6 days ago. Strange because I was really looking forward to you reacting to this song. But better late than never. I'm glad to see a lot of people did react and shared there love for and knowledge of AnnenMayKantereit , and the intriging voice of Henning. Extra recommandation is Your song (original from Elton Jokn). And Come Together (original the Beatles).
Dear Gerda, I'm really glad my first contact with AnnenMayKantereit was Barfuß Am Klavier, or rather my first contact with Henning May. You picked one you seem to have known I'd love. Please do not worry about being "late". There's no such thing when it comes to hearing a reaction or even a song. Once it's out, it's out and people should listen when they enjoy it, not when they feel an obligation to do it. That would be work, not fun. 😊 Someone suggested Ich geh' heut nicht mehr tanzen, so that's the next one I'm planning to hear, but your additional recommendations also sound very interesting. I think you found another set of artists I do want to know more about. Of course, I know all the originals you listed, but I especially like Your Song - there is no way I'll miss that one. I'm very glad you liked this reaction, like all so far it was very real, so I'm a bit too thoughtful at first, but he just pulled me out of my thought process and definitely made me appreciate his wonderful sense of humor. It was even explained how it's more complex than it seems, giving this young man another layer I really like. More to come for sure and thank you again! Hope things are a bit calmer now and that you're getting some respite from the busy/heavy days. ❤❤❤
@@AleksReacts A lot of request for Tommi. When you do this one, take the one from Koln live. ua-cam.com/video/Ic7YGUjgpmM/v-deo.html A hometown song that everybody can relate to. Great review Aleks, and an unexpected find on your channel! Recently usually I don't give any suggestions for artists other than RAYE as I feel it's my duty to promote her as much as I can, but I'll make an exception tonight as AMK and Henning in particular are the only German artists I really love (I mean, I kinda like some others, too...), but Hennings voice was almost epic back then, and is even better now... I'm sure you'll get some suggestions for their viral English covers like Roxanne, Tom's Diner or Can't Get You Out Of My Head, but the song I'd like to put your attention to is another German original, and in a later, rearranged version with additional horns and strings, my favorite recording by them: AnnenMayKantereit - Ich geh heut nicht mehr tanzen (Proberaum Session) ua-cam.com/video/Gu9OybxvqmI/v-deo.htmlsi=iT6yYCkAQ1uI-V3E Peace out! Btw. RAYE's birthday is Oct. 24th...
Thank you yet again! It was an unexpected find for me as well, but I wanted to hear something new and @GerdaTw provided me with an idea a while ago. This guy's voice is magic, but I loved his sense of humor even more. You are right, exactly those 3 English covers were suggested. Now, Tom's Diner is something I do need to hear, but I'm more interested in their originals I think, so your suggestion made it straight to my "production" list. Raye's Genesis did too now, as you are very, very, very persistent. 🤣
"it didn't work that way" or "it didn't work out"? In German "das ging so nicht" could be translated "it didn't work out that way". "we weren't enough" is also in German ("wir waren zu wenig") not clear - it is open to interpretation.
@AleksReacts Perhaps I should add that the word "einsam" isn't translated well. The English translation says "alone" but that would be "alleine" in German. "einsam" means "lonely", the German words "gemeinsam einsam" are implying the image of a unity of two people being like one person and feeling disconnected to the world outside.
Thank you yet again! These seemingly small details really matter and only a native speaker can explain them with certainty. I very much appreciate it! ❤️
@@klio9611OR: Are they gemeinsam (together) physically, but they are lonely each for themselves? Because she asks too many questions, that drives him away (mentally) and then she ends the relationship because she needs more (we are not enough) communication? Maybe?
@winterlinde5395 The lyrics are a piece of poetry. So it is always open to interpretation. The word "gemeinsam" describes the unity of people doing something together and in German grammar the adverb "gemeinsam" refers completely to the following adverb "einsam". So the emphasis is on experiencing lonelyness as a couple, not feeling lonely while being together (just being physically together and feeling lonely would be something like "zusammen und einsam" or "zusammen, aber einsam"). The poem is playing with the strong contradiction of the two words "gemeinsam einsam". It is highlighting that the word "einsam" is a part of "gemeinsam" and playing with the similar sound. An author mustn't neccessarily be aware of the concrete meaning - so there is always place for interpretation. But if you look at the lyrics: laying in bed "gemeinsam einsam" with her is his best memory: "Ich erinnere mich am besten ans gemeinsam einsam Liegen". Then following the passage where he tells "du und ich wir waren mal wir und jetzt sind wir nichts, du hier, ich da" (you and me, we once were we, now we are nothing, you here, I'm there), and telling her wish to know everything drove them apart. English is not my native language, so I'm sorry if it may be difficult to understand what I mean.
Maybe not a technically "perfect"voice, but certainly enjoyable to see and hear.......1st exposure to this artist & I like him.....thanks, Aleks........
Yes, very much agree with you! His voice is strangely grating and pleasant at the same time. Also, Gerda picked a very good song to start with, can't get it out of my head. Glad you liked him too!

In this video, I think he was 27. He is a great guy, but not every woman is made to live with a driven man composing and singing almost constantly. I suspect that his soul is very filligree, easy to brake.
I had hoped you'd say something along the lines of 20 years old, as he does not look a day older than that. Hmmm, I haven't even thought about that aspect, but you're very right. If a man is in love with you, but even more in love with his music it is hard to be the second thing on his mind...

Yes, I googled him later too. It's not even just him, this is a band actually. However, even though I can see he's around 20 here he's got an "old" voice and baby face. Some combo. 😂
@@AleksReacts He sounds like the late Soviet singer/poet Vladimir Vysotsky, his voice had that rough edge! But he lived life to the max! Burned his candle at both ends AND in the middle!
I loved it for the exact same reasons you described.
@@AleksReacts 😂 I have a five y/o child… That’s why. But it’s already 8 here, so… Not so early for me, even being a Sunday.
Kiss the little rascal for me. It's worth not sleeping in for such a good reason. ❤️
@@AleksReacts I finished high school in 1987, y'all are just babies...
I'm not going to argue, being a baby is far better than being what I am - a middle aged woman. 🤣
@@AleksReacts so I will call you baby girl... Hey baby girl instead of hey Aleks🤣, see you on the next one baby girl! Yeah, I like that, if you like it as well we can keep that...
Baby girl sounds jusssssssssst fine at my age. 🤣 Not going to complain about being called a kid. After all, I never really grew up.
I'm beginning to know you a little - I think you'll love it ❤
It's becoming more and more difficult to find good films as the years go by.
Also, I thought this channel would just be around and no one would watch it.
You should see me trying to figure out what to react to next with so many suggestions.

No to-do-list can justify living under a rock forever...
Let's see if we can bring her on to Nataliea's world as well 🙂
@@poolhallshark I've watched her reactions to Alfonsina so far and can't wait for her to discover Natalia!
Dear Aleks,
So sorry that I dindn't react earlier.
Dear Gerda,
I'm really glad my first contact with AnnenMayKantereit was Barfuß Am Klavier, or rather my first contact with Henning May. You picked one you seem to have known I'd love.
Please do not worry about being "late". There's no such thing when it comes to hearing a reaction or even a song. Once it's out, it's out and people should listen when they enjoy it, not when they feel an obligation to do it. That would be work, not fun. 😊
Someone suggested Ich geh' heut nicht mehr tanzen, so that's the next one I'm planning to hear, but your additional recommendations also sound very interesting.
When you do this one, take the one from Koln live. ua-cam.com/video/Ic7YGUjgpmM/v-deo.html
A hometown song that everybody can relate to. Maybe replace it by your hometown and the specifics there.
I always feel tears well up because it is such a sincere song. Hartfelt en relatable.
On an other note: a little present to watch, only takes 30 seconds: ua-cam.com/users/shortsodj8V0KTRL4 the year 2021. He looks 12 there, but the interpretation of this song is so great.
And here are the translated lyrics to Tommi
Tommi, I think I'm homesick
I want to stay by the Rhine once again
Just stare into it
Watch ships go by
Tommi, I think I'm homesick
Maybe it's the light and the way it refracts right now
Or the fact that one
Can see the Spree here on the subway
[Pre-Chorus]
Tommi, maybe I'll call
To hear you say "Someday, someday, someday
We'll start here again for the last time"
[Chorus]
Where we grew up together
We'll all move back there someday
So that the kids that we can have
Are all born in Cologne
Whеre we grew up togеther
We'll all move back there someday
So that the kids that we can have
Are all born in Cologne
In Cologne
In Cologne
See upcoming pop shows
Get tickets for your favorite artists
[Verse 2]
In the city in which we were young and stupid
And invulnerable because everything was so colourful
And it was always clear that there will be a day
On which we'll both leave
We always wanted to see things
As much as you can and all around the world
All roads lead to Rome
And someday lead back to Cologne
[Chorus]
Where we grew up together
We'll all move back there someday
So that the kids that we can have
Are all born in Cologne
Where we grew up together
We'll all move back there someday
So that the kids that we can have
Are all born in Cologne
In Cologne
In Cologne
[Bridge]
Tommi, I think I'm homesick
I want to stay by Rhine
Just stare into it
Drink a cold drink and roll up a joint
[Chorus]
Where we grew up together
We'll all move back there someday
So that the kids that we can have
Are all born in Cologne
In Cologne

I caught this comment on the other AMK reaction, so I replied there. Thank you, dear Gerda! ❤❤❤
I'm sure you'll get some suggestions for their viral English covers like Roxanne, Tom's Diner or Can't Get You Out Of My Head, but the song I'd like to put your attention to is another German original, and in a later, rearranged version with additional horns and strings, my favorite recording by them:
AnnenMayKantereit - Ich geh heut nicht mehr tanzen (Proberaum Session)
ua-cam.com/video/Gu9OybxvqmI/v-deo.htmlsi=iT6yYCkAQ1uI-V3E
Peace out!
Very nice piano and entertaining lyrics, his voice is interesting and being in German there is that added sort of coarseness. 🎶🎵
I know exactly what you mean. That's pretty much how I feel about this performance. I'm still smiling about it. 🙂
"it didn't work that way" or "it didn't work out"? In German "das ging so nicht" could be translated "it didn't work out that way".
"we weren't enough" is also in German ("wir waren zu wenig") not clear - it is open to interpretation.
Thank you so much! Logic made me ask, but it seems I'm sometimes just being a bit too logical - I should have just let go. 😊
@@klio9611OR:
Are they gemeinsam (together) physically, but they are lonely each for themselves?
I like you commenting and laughing naturally. Best wishes from Germany 😊
Thank you, Molly! Beste Wünsche nach Deutschland! ❤❤❤
Maybe not a technically "perfect"voice, but certainly enjoyable to see and hear.......1st exposure to this artist & I like him.....thanks, Aleks........

Greetings from Scotland! Hi Aleks! I agree, that voice sounds like a 50yo smoky nightclub singer! I love that roughness to it!

Yes, I googled him later too. It's not even just him, this is a band actually. However, even though I can see he's around 20 here he's got an "old" voice and baby face. Some combo. 😂
