I loved that scene where Lister talked Rimmer out of suicide, not just because of the writing and dialogue, but because it's one of those moments where despite the nature of their "friendship" Lister does like having Rimmer around. Which speaks volumes about the characters and their likability
One thing to note, while none of them could say they liked Rimmer, Lister was genuinly trying to convince him not to deactivate himself. He was trying to save his life. he may not like him, but Lister cares for Rimmer, possibly even loves him (like a brother). I don't much like my brother much, but I'd take a bullet for him anyday. It's more important to be loved than to be liked, and you vary well can love someone you don't much like.
We've seen in the past that Holly should not be underestimated but... wow, who would have thought that Red Dwarf essentially had Death Star capability?
I think it was mentioned in some of the old materials in the 80s the nuclear mining torpedoes. I'm gonna assume Death Star still way more powerful. Since a small Moon is easier than a earth size planet.... also maybe the planet had weak points.
I also really liked the moonlight scene. When it comes down to it i think they would all miss Rimmer dearly if he wasn't there... boys from the dwarf. Great vlog Dena, i absolutely loved it!
This episode made me love rimmer even more. When he's on low energy mode you just wanna give him a hug. I think a cat people spin off series would be cool.
I feel like they could have set up Rodon being Cat’s brother a little better by having little visual and verbal hints. Maybe have Rodon brag whilst he’s torturing Sol that he used to make his little brother scream when he scratched him, have Cat hide towards the back of the group when he sees Rodon for the first time because he recognises him and have the reveal be earlier in the episode. Maybe have him catch a quick glimpse of Cat as they’re escaping and after that Rodon reveals it’s gone from a mission of withholding the pecking order to a personal mission to finally kill Cat
I don't know how I missed your Promised Land review, but surprised they never mentioned how Super Rimmer could have been a nod to Ace. Imagine if he picked up the bomb and said "ill be back for breakfast"
And I agree, Cat's original backstory about being born to the cripple and the idiot was better. And until you mentioned it, it never occurred to me that Rodon should be dead due to the amount of time the boys from the Dwarf spent in deep sleep while on Starbug. I remember you telling me that I would probably enjoy this episode, and you were right. It was a fun episode, and a touching way for this series to end, unless any more work is in the pipeline. So thanks for allowing this old Dwarfer to relive all the fond memories through your videos. I'm still watching your other stuff, but this has been an immensely fun way to enjoy my all time favourite show again.
0:38 Lister just called the trio of cats "ragamuffins" that happens to be the name of a breed of cat known for their friendly personalities, I wonder if that was intentional ?
I actually like Cat being left behind for being uncool. Yes he acted cool because he swore he would never be uncool again, but his version of cool is massively different to the rest of the cats, and it's still his own brand of cool.
Fun vlog. 🙂 Yeah I dunno when next episodes will be if at all. This whole year has made everything rather uncertain. I'd forgotten about the original plan for an effect for Rimmer so thanks for pointing out that the gray-scaling in this episode was that finally in use (strange to think technology has moved on so much we can even easily do effects on our phones far beyond what television productions could do a few decades ago). Anyways thanks for all the Dwarf vids. Have a good weekend and rest of 2020. 🙂
When they flew into the sandstorm to escape, I thought of Mad Max: Fury Road and it went on, I noticed there were quite a few comparisons. Character crisis and self-assessment, the dashing of hope, the megalomaniac leader of the ferals who gets torn apart in the end, realizing the Promised Land (Green Place) was the home you left behind, and the liberation of the people who can now taste true freedom, while our heroes go back into space (the wastelands) to make their own way. Wonder if that was a coincidence or a source of inspiration.

It was mentioned in the behind the scenes on the DVD. the 4 guys including Doug Naylor have all said they are up for doing more. But it will be specials like this. Not "Seasons"
What they really should’ve done with Cat this episode was have Rodon take him back to their ship with them when they met on the space station because Cat did not believe Lister was a God due to having actually lived with him for years. Rodon reckons he could be useful in fully quashing the Cat’s faith in Cloister and convinces Cat to become a preacher type character for him. While Cat is there he sees how none of the other cats fit his definition of cool and that he doesn’t really fit in and so when they confront the rest of the RD crew cat decides to simply go back to his friends before Rodon decides to kill them all. It wouldn’t even really need to be a subplot that takes up much of the episode either, like just two or three scenes as interludes during the Starbug sequences
The Descartes "I think therefore I am" philosophy talk is pretty similar to a conversation in the first red dwarf novel between Hologram Saunders and red dwarfs metaphysical psychiatrist.
I know the show continuity is what's canon, but I can't help compare Lister's random act of kindness of saving the cat and how important that is to the show contrasted with the "Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers" novel where Lister picks up the cat because he wants to go into stasis to kill time until his employment contract ends and sends pictures of the cat to the film developing lab on purpose because they aren't discovering the cat fast enough
wow. Rimmer hasn't admitted that to himself about himself since literally the first episode. Lister: "I mean you're dead, but you're not dead dead, because you're still here aren't you?" Rimmer: "No, don't you get it? I'm not really here! I'm not really me! I'm a computer simulation of me! That's me over there, that pile of albino mouse droppings." But then that was the whole point of Holly choosing the Rimmer hologram in the first place. To simulate Rimmer [Lister's most significant relationship on Red Dwarf as measured by word count] so accurately, that Dave would forget that he wasn't actually there. I guess in order to truly do that, Rimmer has to forget he's not really there, too. and they got to do him in Black & White like they always wanted!
Apparently, there is a Leggo idea to make a Leggo version of Red Dwarf. I can't be the only one who would enjoy playing with a Leggo Red Dwarf while watching these videos. :-)
small thought on Rhodon - he could have been put in stasis for a while himself and then used that to his advantage somehow when he came back, considering he seems to have decided he wants to be the god of the cats
Coupe of things, firstly, as a massive Rimmer fan in any form, I am really disappointed that they chose the name mighty light for his superhero name, when the form of light was Diamond light. Am I the only one who thought of the superhero name Ace of Diamond light? It was right frikking there. lol. Secondly, I do love Lister's moonlight speech, as it shows the two characters have come full circle. Originally, it was Rimmer's responsibility to keep Lister sane, and keep his mind off of his situation. In this scene, we see Lister offering Rimmer the same service. Good character moment. And yeah, thinking about it, the season 5/6 plot hole of going into suspended animationfor 200 years does really make Rodan being Kat's brother impossible. Still, good addition to the series, and it's not like it's the first plothole.
I didnt personally mind the Cats backstory being changed with the explanation for why he always wants to be cool...but given that I really hate that they explained Rimmers middle name instead of just leaving it as rule of funny, I understand how you feel.

I agree the Cat shouldn't need a reason to be cool. i feel like the cat being insecure has been a strange addition to the show in recent years. the idea that the Cat is worried he isn't cool just kinda conflicts with his characterisation IMO. I know some have pointed out its also inconsistent with Waiting for God where its said the cat was born after the cats left Red Dwarf.
Pointing out continuity errors, plot holes, unexplained ways around things and incorrect facts is something I’ve learned to dismiss and embrace the the meta jokes about them. It feels just “Red Dwarfy” enough to the point it becomes a joke in itself, that’s how I choose to see these now otherwise I’d be ruining the show for myself
I haven’t seen this British show before but watched their comedy. I hope your legs doing well and recovering a lot. Drink hospital formula for bone healing if you got places to get some.
So this video was your gateway to Red Dwarf? That's too funny. Thanks, my ankle is doing pretty well. Pretty sure the bone is healed at this point--there's just swelling and I had an abscess recently but that seems healed as well.
1. I can’t stop thinking about that fan art every time I see Rimmer 2. All Might is on Red Dwarf? 3. Panic! At The Disco (you’ll understand if you know the symbol) 4. RIMSTER GAY MARRIAGE AHHHH 5. Cats are cool. (But not bow ties) 6. I heard there another Red Dwarf coming soon soooooooo oh no 7. Dena: Welp I’m done with Red Dwarf! Dong: *Oh No You Don’t* *brings back red Dwarf with Depression and smeg*
I can hardly think of any other works of fiction, in any genre or medium, which depict a religion as incorrect, yet also depict the opponents of said religion, rather than the practitioners, as the violent fanatics. That’s a level of nuance rarely applied to the subject from any side. The only other thing I can think of that comes close is “Tron.”
So while I agree the Cat's brother thing is awkwardly shoehorned in as well, I'm gonna defend it a little bit. The priest says that they left behind 'the sick and the lame'. I can see them equating that to being uncool as well as just in a sense of fashion, and Cat doesn't seem to recognise Rodan so I can see his parents having said that's why they were left behind (or his mom as he didn't remember his dad was an idiot). The bit about him having to be cool to prove himself to a brother he didn't know is stupid, and I dunno why they left it to the very end to bring this up when it could've added a bit of development and tension for Cat throughout the story. But it leads to Cat saying "I am home" and that just melts my heart, I'm a complete sucker for found family trope and the Dwarfers are one of the best found families in tv for me.
That brother bit annoyed me to. Your right, Cat would like Lister would have been in Statis for 200 years, plus like you said Cat wasn't born until the bulk of the Cat's had left Red Dwarf. Leaving the Sick & Lame.
According to the special Rodon was stealing advanced tech from derelict ships so it’s possible that he was so vain that he made sure he’d be young forever via going into stasis until he needed to do his job as a leader
You probably won’t see this so far out, but I’ve enjoyed them all, almost as much as I enjoyed the show through the years. 1 minor issue I’ve had, you’ve used a red box effect top and bottom of the thumbnails, and at least on my iPad YT shows if I’ve watched an episode with a red bar, which is pretty much invisible against the red you’ve used 😆
Yeah I'm with you on how they handle Cat its just a lot of weird retcons to try and make Cat into some kind of uncool insecure dweeb? I don't get why that was such a common thing to happen to him its like they forgot who they were writing for. I also find it odd that they have Cat you know the one they keep joking about being really dumb being the one to talk about why Rimmer isn't real surely if Cat is so dumb that's not something he should even think about? I dunno leaves a bad taste in my mouth how often they keep writing Cat in a bad way or like use him when they want to have someone be an mean spirited asshole or a dweeb isn't that supposed to be Rimmer's character role? I think Cat works better as the cool character who doesn't think a lot about what he's saying and is an asshole in a comedic way. Mostly everything else I'm okay with and liked in the last few seasons. I do like that Promised Land finally gave us the Cat species we've been searching for all this time and how we got to see Lister meet more of them and the guilt he feels for their people fighting over their belief in him. I liked Kryten and Rimmer's roles here a lot too but I really find it so weird whenever Red Dwarf the series seems to lean into things that the books come up with, why do we need Rimmer to have an existensial crisis about being a hologram after what like 30 years of the show being out and centuries of time in-universe this is the first time he questions his existence? I was never fond of the idea of Holograms being a simulation of a person over being the continuation of that person in a hologramatic form I mean if its possible for Nanobots to resurrect humans who turned into dust why can't it be possible for a human to come back as a hologram? I get with Rimmer he has a tendency to clone himself but I feel like Season 1 - 7 Rimmer was the original Rimmer, the first one and every other Hologram and resurrection were just literal clones as in literally clones of his soul. I do also agree with your headcanon that S1-7 Rimmer is Ace and he's still out there as Ace and the one we have now is a Hybrid of S8 as a Hologram but with S1-7's memories. Wow that was a really complicated view I have on Holograms and Rimmer overall lol. I liked the Rebel cats a lot, I liked the Feral Cats too but I really feel like this film seemed to be cut short for time because it felt like we didn't get a proper final conflict between Red Dwarf and the Feral Cats. I'm also not fond of the leader of the Feral Cats being revealed as Cat's brother just an uncessary detail to be honest and its not really necessary.
Kinda nit picking but didn’t they spend several hundred years in stasis in season 6? And then again in s7 when they had to go back to the ocean moon? There’s no way cat’s brother is almost a thousand years old. Meh, red dwarf continuity is not a thing Edit: lol you just mentioned it
I always assumed Rodun's comments about Cat were just him being the bad guy and trying to hurt his feelings. It's a stretch, but less of a stretch than Cat's not naturally cool.
My biggest problem with this special is that it doesn't have a straightforward enough story, and is too tightly packed with story beats that really should have been their own episodes. Honestly, this special should have been an entire season with an overarching plot, that way we could get a lit more development and exploration of everything introduced, and none of it would feel cut off too short. Not to mention the ending cements the status quo and that kind of bothers me. Meeting the cat race in full for the first time should have been a massive game changer and could have provided a lot of new characters and story opportunities, possibly finally bringing the series to an end before it runs its course, ending with the crew finally reaching Earth and the cat people repopulating the planet, or something
Right, cos after the prologue it starts with Kryten trying to convince Lister or Cat to have a gender reassignment to repopulate the human race. I can't remember if it was every episode but i noticed they will have something from earlier from comes back as a deus machina. (If that makes sense) Though it just occurred to me that Rimmer saved the day and became their new God, so close enough I guess.
when talking lewis mention this better then some episodes in last few seasons and said 2 of em were twentica and cured aside from ending were atrocious. Since u didnt seem to dislike em curious hear from u if way u see how someone could feel like that towards those 2
I dunno, the only episodes I really didn't like in the two previous seasons were "Timewave" and "Can of Worms". I liked all the rest, as far as I remember.
If you look at the original cat bible, Rimmer is already the cat god. In those 1st illustrations, their God is clearly a white man with a H on his head. Only the later enhanced versions show Lister & his locks.
I don't have any plans to. I used to like it, but I haven't seen it in decades. Maybe if I happen to watch it sometime and decide I want to cover it, it could happen, but right now I don't even remember too much about it. Plus, I just started on a new series and I don't like to cover more than 2 at once.

I've heard that there's going to be another season of Red Dwarf.
Hmm, this is the first I've heard of it.
I may have to steal that moonlight metaphor some time
I really enjoy your commentary!!
Thank you!
9:40 Well, there is alternate reality Kochanski.
One way to rectify that would be to assume the priest remembered wrong due to age and illness.
Cat's jacket was the real star of this episode.
oh great, that means i get to keep my BAST stone in my fan fiction.
More cats prove what we all knew...Cats are awesome on Red Dwarf
Great stuff!
This was excellent thanks.
When I watched this i wasn't really a fan but you've made me appreciate it alot more. You seem to have a talent for that 😆
Rimmer in holoship did selfless thing
Pointing out continuity errors, plot holes, unexplained ways around things and incorrect facts is something I’ve learned to dismiss and embrace the the meta jokes about them.
It feels just “Red Dwarfy” enough to the point it becomes a joke in itself, that’s how I choose to see these now otherwise I’d be ruining the show for myself
Anubis? Those Bast... Nerds...
The Promised Land is Asgard!
1. I can’t stop thinking about that fan art every time I see Rimmer
2. All Might is on Red Dwarf?
3. Panic! At The Disco (you’ll understand if you know the symbol)
4. RIMSTER GAY MARRIAGE AHHHH
5. Cats are cool. (But not bow ties)
6. I heard there another Red Dwarf coming soon soooooooo oh no
The only theory I can think of is that the feral empire had some kind of stasis facility as well. It’s a stretch but it’s something.
1 minor issue I’ve had, you’ve used a red box effect top and bottom of the thumbnails, and at least on my iPad YT shows if I’ve watched an episode with a red bar, which is pretty much invisible against the red you’ve used 😆
Oops! I never even thought about that XD
Meh, red dwarf continuity is not a thing
Edit: lol you just mentioned it
Well done.
What has us confused, Holly was going to blow up the Dwarf in 7days/minutes and then three months later they contact him. Wha?!
He wasn’t going to blow it up, he was simply going to decommission it.
I always assumed Rodun's comments about Cat were just him being the bad guy and trying to hurt his feelings. It's a stretch, but less of a stretch than Cat's not naturally cool.
26:04 I'm so sorry.
Thanks.
in the books earth had been turned into a dump for everbodys crap
That's fair. It would have been interesting to see where they would have gone with this if it was a full season.
@@Cyborcat yeah u did like those 2 just thought I check and see
If you were gonna do more vlogs what would they cover?
I was seriously considering Alien Nation awhile back. There's also Transformers: G1.
@@Cyborcat I've never heard of alien nation before so that would be interesting but it your channel you do what you want.
I talk about it a little bit in Part 10 of the Cat videos where I cover "Can of Worms".
Why do they keep insisting Anubis has a cat head? Jackals are Dogs.... which would be akin the Devil in there religion surely?
If you look at the original cat bible, Rimmer is already the cat god. In those 1st illustrations, their God is clearly a white man with a H on his head. Only the later enhanced versions show Lister & his locks.
Yeah, okay.
I did just notice that in one of them he does look like Rimmer.
Not find it odd that cat would not be all over the female cats ?
Good point XD
Can you review blackadder
I don't have any plans to. I used to like it, but I haven't seen it in decades. Maybe if I happen to watch it sometime and decide I want to cover it, it could happen, but right now I don't even remember too much about it. Plus, I just started on a new series and I don't like to cover more than 2 at once.
@@Cyborcat ok
STOP SWEARING !!!!!!
No? I'll talk how I want. Stop watching if you're so offended by it.
@@Cyborcat WILL DO !!!!
I liked the vlogs until you started pushing the trans and misandry viewss.
Cool, bye then.
