    My neighbour is a sheep farmer here in Canada.
    She finds a dead crow or other black bird and hangs it. (Lots of roadkill here)
    No other crows will come where she hangs it. If they see it or perhaps smell it. It keeps them out of the garden too.

    • @MonkeyJedi99
      @MonkeyJedi99 3 місяці тому +8

      Regarding that commenter on crows, being intelligent does not negate or ensure evil.

    • @mlatham23
      @mlatham23 Місяць тому

      In my work I assign evil to sections of code or applications that regularly break at the the worst possible moment and when it breaks it does it in the worst possible way.
      In Tara's world crows are evil for the same reason. She doesn't have the space in her life to appreciate the place in the environment that crows occupy. And who knows they may not even be a native species, if they are there are many more then would exist without the sheep.
      I am just saying the term evil outside of the religious world is defined a bit differently.
      Software and crows technically can't have intent, however they can impact your life as if they do.

    Just a reminder that the people in this world who supply the food for the rest of us city types don't get all the sick days we do. Thanks for all your hard work, Tara. Glad you are feeling better. 🤒💊🐏🐏🐑🐑👩‍🌾👍👍
    Worst grazers I ever experienced in person were the goats my friend borrowed off a neighbor. They didn't stop at the weeds he wanted gone in his back yard. They chewed bark off his trees and nibbled a bit on the house siding. 😮🐐
    The few things I know about cows is idiot city boys would raid a pasture and tip them over at night. 🤦‍♂That, and it is their burps during rumination (chewing), not their farts that release methane. Some people were researching transferring gut bacteria from 🦘kangaroos to cows 🐮because kangaroos eat grass, but their digestive bacteria don't produce methane.

      Horses can also be pretty destructive; given the option they, like goats seem to prefer browsing to grazing . My Brother in law has 3 or 4 three acres on the back of his house in the far north of England. He took on a retired Clydesdale carthorse( George) of 17 hands. George keeps the hedges trimmed back up to about, 3-3.5 metres while the couple of rams he accommodates for a neighboring farmer during their 'off season' look after the ground level vegetation

    Cows, they are smart enough to leave a cow as a babysitter. One looks after the children while the rest go graze. Hopefully the same girl isn’t left back with the kiddos all the time as she needs nourishment too especially if she has twins.

    Ah the cows. I'm getting flashbacks to my graduate research. We had to drive through a cattle rancher's field to get to a study site, and the cows liked to chill in the way of our route. There wasn't a road to follow, just a general route, and they liked to hang out in the way. They were certainly scary for how big they were. We were collecting water samples from a small estuary, but the only access was through that field.

      @TaraFarms my folks are from Montana and they've told me that cattle ranchers there have to keep horses with the cows in the winter because the cows are too stupid to break ice to get a drink, but the horse will do it and then the cows will drink. They're dangerous and dumb animals.

      I remember the cows on our farm being ornery shits. Hard to get moving and would try to pin you against a fence. Bloody hard to shift if you're a kid who only weighs about 35 kilos. Mind you they only tried it with me a couple of times because when they did the bull would come and shove them away. We had nasty cows but the bulls were real sweeties who were for some reason quite protective of me.

    Cows are actually nice cause they learn to come when called. I used to bring in the cows by walking with a bag of carrots or whatever treat I could find. And I walked them in and would give them treats. We just had a few bramaan bulls for meat and 2 dairy cows. I usually had a whip just to make sure the bulls didnt act up. But the big bull was like a dog and tge others just followed him so rarely had problems with them. Unless it was loading into trailers so they could go to market.

    I was droving up in Queensland and we had one very slow cow. The ground was rough so it was hard to push the horse on. Every time I got the horse near the cow to be able to push it on (with my foot), the cow would move just out of reach. This went on for 15minutes or so, eventually the horse got sick of it and bit the cow on the backside. Nearly fell off the horse laughing as the nuisance cow ran off to the mob squarking.

    My rottweilers used to move our cows. They love it. Its what they were bred for 2,000 years ago. Unfortunately, they also try to round up horses and that can have mixed results, although i can confirm from personal observation that even if a horse launches a rottweiller 20 feet in the air, the rottweiler wont take it personally (although he will stop going close behind the horses - after ignoring hundreds of previous commands not to go close behind the horses. Rotties are stubborn but they learn from their mistakes very quickly).
    Rottweilers will also instinctively round up groups of people, as you will find out if youre in a group with an off leash rottie and youre the person at the back. Watch your ankles. Letting them round up your cows makes that habit more pronounced.
    If you want cows to move fast, get something brightly multicoloured that crackles - a plastic/synthetic flag will do the job - and wave it noisily. But be prepared to run because every cow in the paddock will suddenly find you intensely interesting.

    With only a few cattle who can food train them to follow you or come to you. My father-in-law had a herd of 140 Santa Gertrudis. It was amazing watching him yell “come on cows”, and see them all trot up to him. My old friesian cow used to think she was a dog 😂

    Cows are typically herded on horsback. Horse or a quadrunner if you wanna work with cows. I have no idea why but thats how they do it on most cattle ranches. Just when yah thought you had enough shit to do. Maybe the quadrunner then if that doesnt get the raid runnen your gonna have to try the horseback method borrow one to give er a try.

    I know you have kms of fencing but it's funny to me to see sheep behind high tensile wire strand fence when I'm used to seeing rylock here in Scotland. Working with our (not as determined as primelines) mules it's rare that one tries it on against a fence. They will have a go as a youngster but after bouncing off a couple of times it is more likely they'll try to jump if the blackface genes are strong, or just lie down.

    • @TaraFarms
      @TaraFarms  3 місяці тому +1

      Wish they’d just stay in the fence! We’re in the process of building a fencing contraption so we can fence at lightening speed!
