  • Hi Everyone!
My name is Dan, and I am a veterinarian. Today my veterinary technicians and I are going to be showing you how to give Subcutaneous or SQ fluids at home or in the veterinary clinic.
SQ fluids are commonly completed in the veterinary community for any pet like a dog or cat that is dehydrated. Of course, IV fluids are always need if the dog or cat is severely dehydrated or ill and needs hospitalization.
SQ fluids are commonly given at home or at the veterinary clinic for dogs and cats that have chronic disease that need fluids to help keep them hydrated. A good example would be chronic kidney disease. Fluids will help to hydrated a dog or cat that is dehydrated from chronic renal disease.
If a pet does poorly in the veterinary hospital because they are really nervous, SQ fluids can be a great way to help hydrated without the dog or cat being really nervous at the veterinary hospital.
To start giving SQ fluids, always talk with your veterinarian first and have a physical exam completed. Never stop or start any new treatments on your pet without talking with your veterinarian first. If your veterinarian feels like SQ or subcutaneous fluids are a good option for your pet, they will provide you with a fluid bag, line for fluid delivery, and a needle. It is important to always change needs with each use and place the needle in a sharp's contain when done.
Your veterinarian will let you know how often to give fluids and how much.
After giving the SQ fluids, always apply pressure to prevent any fluid leakage from the application site.

Quick question: what gauge needle do you guys usually use/recommend? Also is normal saline ok? And how many MLs/KG?

The fluids you use are based on your pets health concerns. Large gauge needles deliver fluid quicker.

My little puppy has got infected with parvo virus. There are no veterinarians nearby. And the clinic is really far away. We went to the clinic and got her checked in the morning and brought her home. They said it is the first stage. They gave her medicine and asked to keep her very well hydrated, most effectively Saline iv fluids. They gave her saline today. But tomorrow until 18th the clinics are closed so we can't get her fluids. I'm so desperate, I searched if we can give her fluids at home. Please help me.
