One of the reasons I go to AA is to remind me how bad things got. I have a built in forgetter and need to remember this. I think most humans tend to remember good times and forget the bad..
The bad times overshadow the good times 10:1. I was secretly drinking last 4th of July. I had a houseful of guests and I felt alone and just wanted to go to bed. I never want to go back to the pain of being actively addicted to alcohol.
Very very interesting...nobody can drive a point home like you. I, too, was a lot more fun drunk than sober..but..but....then I used to wake up naked with no memory of anything! God so embarrassing! I don't want to EVER get like that again! I think the nostalgia is a true contributor. Well keep talkin....if it helps you...it sure helps us.

Thats the trouble with anything that gives you that instant gratification. You have to pay the price after the fun. Everyone wants the reward first, and to not do the hard work first to earn something good. We can forget how alcohol works, its reward first pay later.
Wine gave me "mad anxiety " everyday and I only had 2 glasses a night. It kept me mad all the time at everyone for no real reason. I just heard that term today and I'm such a better person without it. My husband and I would snap & fight with each other constantly and now we hardly ever get mad at each other. It's worth every drink you don't take.

Our 4th has been like any other day. “R” is working & big “R” caught up on work from home. They both go back tomorrow too. Crazy. I’ll prob be in bed at 8again. It’s too hot to go outside. I lost my grandma on this day back in 84. It’s a day mixed with memories. Happy it’s on a Thursday this year. Hope y’all are having a good one! Memories do fade…but they fade at their own time…a time will come that your “ muscle memory” fades…bad news is it can take a good long while. You have my prayers, my daughter has set up a Novena, my grand daughter remembers everyone on this channel in her good night prayers…you got us and we got you….

About the nostalgia, I was given the advice to "play the tape all the way through". If you catch yourself romanticizing the drinking, do exactly what you said and balance it out by remembering all the horrible times. The cravings will go away in time. You will wake up one morning and think..."When was the last time I had a craving? A week ago? I can't even remember... Wow something is changing." That was my experience. It took about 18months to reach that point, but you know, "one day at a time". The obsession will go away. You may have passing thoughts, but the compulsion is gone and you play the tape all the way through. You are skilled at articulating your experience and have developed a healthy outlet by creating these videos. Thank you for sharing your experience. Well done.
Maybe when you get some more experience being sober and hanging out with your family you'll find comedy in the things they do. When my kids were little, it's a wonder nobody choked because at dinnertime we'd usually all end up rolling around on the floor we'd be laughing so hard at something! We weren't drunk or intoxicated in any way, but if anybody saw us they would probably have thought we were... My husband had this incredible wit, and I was so serious, but it rubbed off onto me somehow. Our daughters just inherited it.
Even after 5 years free I still think of the good times. Beach days, concerts, nights with friends, holidays, all the cocaine and hundreds of drinks with girls for days on end. It's tough man, but I wouldn't trade those days to go back to problem drinking. Not one. Keep playing it forward. What would happen? How would this one drink make me feel? It's a slippery slope to oblivion. This is a mourning stage for you (usually 2 years or so). It gets easier man trust me. IWNDWYT!! ODAAT! Glad you're starting a pump! It's going to help! I drink the La Croix sparkling waters, they are cheap, no sugar, no calories or sweeteners. I use to hate them when I drank beer everyday but love them now.
I am right there with you! I used to hate them too! Now.... I love them. I can drink a 12 pack of those bad boys in a day! I will put them in a cooler on ice and keep them with me. Nothing beats the shame of being severely hungover on Christmas morning! I always felt like the lowest human being on earth trying to force myself into the Christmas spirit and just feeling like death because I got sloshed the night prior.

Christmas eve was a great time to drink until your kids woke you up at 6am the following morning to open gifts and you feel like absolute ass. Who'd a thought openening Christmas gifts would be pure torture

I think the nostalgia is very honest. Sure, when we used to drink we had a good time. It felt great. Alcohol gives us that amazing feeling. BUT, (this is the other side we used to ignore and we now incorporate into the perspective on alcohol,)but, it will give you that one good feeling, but it will rob you of everything else that life has to offer(including eventually your own life). So sure, you get that one good feeling, but all the thousands of other good things life offers, you don’t get. So I choose to miss out on that one feeling in exchange for everything g else life has to offer. I’m not saying that feeling isint great, but not enough to loose everything.

Hey LD - I think our personalities change which is ok. We’re all looser when we drink, well most people are. We do romanticize alcohol and other substances. It’s the planning, the purchase, make it an event, that’s what you have to get used to living without. Those glory days are long gone for most of us. We need to make new ones without the poison, because at one point we had lots of fun without. Oh LD you’re such an awesome person and a great story teller. Tell those stories, just in a different way, because you’re lovely to be around.

I get the whole summer thing. I’m a Harley guy, the bike is programmed to automatically find all the watering holes. Really hard to just go out for a nice ride without getting triggered.

Just finished your video. It's just after 7am Central Australia Time and it's been a bit chilly for this part of the world. Hovering around freezing but just cold not rain or snow! Looks so warm and sunny there but we'll get our turn in summer. Oh, I remember the spinning feeling like you're falling to the centre of the earth. A great video again. Yes, alcohol sure relaxes your inhibitions and for me being pretty quiet and shy normally, it was a temptation just to relax. Unfortunately I would drink way past overcoming my inhibitions and probably made myself obnoxious. Good on you for staying strong. We're all staying strong together. 😀😀😀

All of us (parents & grandparents) are alerted via our phones if he’s out of range!
I had bad binge yesterday 😢 I had blood work done and when the Dr told me my liver is good i decided to celebrate with alcohol. Bad idea. Had no sleep and at work this morning hangover. Yeah no thanks

Sorry about your pancreatic situation, but good to hear you have the insulin pump in the pipeline. I really struggle with finger pricking for blood glucose readings, so have also been prescribed a CGM, and fitted it this evening. It’s the Libre 2, and only lasts for 14 days, but I think that it will prove to be a useful tool for monitoring my situation. The downside of CGM’s is the fact that you keep checking your phone for the latest reading 🙄. I’m off for another MRCP if my pancreas on Saturday, and then I’ll hopefully get a treatment plan. I’ve done one fecal elastase test that came back with moderate insufficiency, but they want me to do one more before prescribing enzymes (Usually Creon). Despite all you’re going through, I think you’re looking well, though I appreciate that off-camera, you have many challenges. Ask your specialist to confirm that you’re not type 3c rather than 1. This is more common with chronic pancreatitis, but requires different tests. Feel-free to message if you need more information. Stay strong (As will I), and greetings from what’s clearly a milder U.K climate (70-80 degrees). Best Wishes Adam

Great video. Man im wondering if you regret being drunk all the time when your kids were little? Whenever i see pictures or videos of my kids when they were babies it breaks my heart. Beacause i wasted those years in a drunken fog and wasnt there for them. And now they are gone and are now teenagers and i can never go back and fix it. It makes me feel physically ill with sadness regret and.even anger towards myself when i think about it. Maybe you could do a video about it?

LD nothing romantic about it. You can do all those things with diet coke. I have lived a life of success by not drinking. Prior to that a lived a life of shame, guilt , embarrassment. Would never have achieved a thing if I had not quit. Like I've told you. I only think of the bad bad bad times. You got this buddy!!!!
I never drank or had any interest or problems with alcohol until I went through trauma at 35. I’m 48 now and stopped drinking. I don’t understand why I developed a problem after going through trauma?

yes we have a wishful thinking that alcohol is a companion and we can enjoy, but reality is nasty feeling in the body especially early in the morning when waking up after a long sleep, getting fired, getting bloated, being known as alchoolic in my block of flats, not being able to be with people because i am too dirty and my clothes are too smelly and dirty, all of these were also before drinking, depression, bad memories, but drinking makes some things worse and makes me tired all the time and sleepy and lethargic and with eyes almost closed, just waiting to expire and go away,.. i am glad we found this in common, this realization that we chase this illusion, thanks

I so agree with this, LD. It's easy to trick yourself into thinking only about the positive memories associated with alcohol when you're getting a craving or confronted with temptation. I do this all the time. But when I was close to quitting, alcohol just zapped me of my energy and my ability to think. It just made everything harder. And I can say that every time I caved after initially quitting, it remained that same effect. There's literally no benefit to drinking anymore. I hope everyone has a wonderful day today. About the nostalgia, I was given the advice to "play the tape all the way through". If you catch yourself romanticizing the drinking, do exactly what you said and balance it out by remembering all the horrible times.
The cravings will go away in time. You will wake up one morning and think..."When was the last time I had a craving? A week ago? I can't even remember... Wow something is changing." That was my experience. It took about 18months to reach that point, but you know, "one day at a time". The obsession will go away. You may have passing thoughts, but the compulsion is gone and you play the tape all the way through.
You are skilled at articulating your experience and have developed a healthy outlet by creating these videos. Thank you for sharing your experience. Well done.

Maybe when you get some more experience being sober and hanging out with your family you'll find comedy in the things they do. When my kids were little, it's a wonder nobody choked because at dinnertime we'd usually all end up rolling around on the floor we'd be laughing so hard at something! We weren't drunk or intoxicated in any way, but if anybody saw us they would probably have thought we were... My husband had this incredible wit, and I was so serious, but it rubbed off onto me somehow. Our daughters just inherited it.

Even after 5 years free I still think of the good times. Beach days, concerts, nights with friends, holidays, all the cocaine and hundreds of drinks with girls for days on end. It's tough man, but I wouldn't trade those days to go back to problem drinking. Not one. Keep playing it forward. What would happen? How would this one drink make me feel? It's a slippery slope to oblivion. This is a mourning stage for you (usually 2 years or so). It gets easier man trust me. IWNDWYT!! ODAAT! Glad you're starting a pump! It's going to help! I drink the La Croix sparkling waters, they are cheap, no sugar, no calories or sweeteners. I use to hate them when I drank beer everyday but love them now.
I am right there with you! I used to hate them too! Now.... I love them. I can drink a 12 pack of those bad boys in a day! I will put them in a cooler on ice and keep them with me. Nothing beats the shame of being severely hungover on Christmas morning! I always felt like the lowest human being on earth trying to force myself into the Christmas spirit and just feeling like death because I got sloshed the night prior.

I remember ruining my kids Christmas one year. I have been single for 28 years, so there was no pinch hitter. So hungover couldn't even make Christmas dinner. Wish I had a re-do.
Christmas eve was a great time to drink until your kids woke you up at 6am the following morning to open gifts and you feel like absolute ass. Who'd a thought openening Christmas gifts would be pure torture

I think the nostalgia is very honest. Sure, when we used to drink we had a good time. It felt great. Alcohol gives us that amazing feeling. BUT, (this is the other side we used to ignore and we now incorporate into the perspective on alcohol,)but, it will give you that one good feeling, but it will rob you of everything else that life has to offer(including eventually your own life). So sure, you get that one good feeling, but all the thousands of other good things life offers, you don’t get. So I choose to miss out on that one feeling in exchange for everything g else life has to offer. I’m not saying that feeling isint great, but not enough to loose everything.
Also we get so fixated on that one good feeling, that we conveniently forget all the bad that came with it.

Hey LD - I think our personalities change which is ok. We’re all looser when we drink, well most people are. We do romanticize alcohol and other substances. It’s the planning, the purchase, make it an event, that’s what you have to get used to living without. Those glory days are long gone for most of us. We need to make new ones without the poison, because at one point we had lots of fun without. Oh LD you’re such an awesome person and a great story teller. Tell those stories, just in a different way, because you’re lovely to be around.

I get the whole summer thing. I’m a Harley guy, the bike is programmed to automatically find all the watering holes. Really hard to just go out for a nice ride without getting triggered.

Yes, alcohol sure relaxes your inhibitions and for me being pretty quiet and shy normally, it was a temptation just to relax. Unfortunately I would drink way past overcoming my inhibitions and probably made myself obnoxious.

All of us (parents & grandparents) are alerted via our phones if he’s out of range!
I had bad binge yesterday 😢 I had blood work done and when the Dr told me my liver is good i decided to celebrate with alcohol. Bad idea. Had no sleep and at work this morning hangover. Yeah no thanks

Sorry about your pancreatic situation, but good to hear you have the insulin pump in the pipeline. I really struggle with finger pricking for blood glucose readings, so have also been prescribed a CGM, and fitted it this evening. It’s the Libre 2, and only lasts for 14 days, but I think that it will prove to be a useful tool for monitoring my situation. The downside of CGM’s is the fact that you keep checking your phone for the latest reading 🙄.
I’m off for another MRCP if my pancreas on Saturday, and then I’ll hopefully get a treatment plan. I’ve done one fecal elastase test that came back with moderate insufficiency, but they want me to do one more before prescribing enzymes (Usually Creon).
Despite all you’re going through, I think you’re looking well, though I appreciate that off-camera, you have many challenges.
Ask your specialist to confirm that you’re not type 3c rather than 1. This is more common with chronic pancreatitis, but requires different tests. Feel-free to message if you need more information.
Stay strong (As will I), and greetings from what’s clearly a milder U.K climate (70-80 degrees).

Great video. Man im wondering if you regret being drunk all the time when your kids were little? Whenever i see pictures or videos of my kids when they were babies it breaks my heart. Beacause i wasted those years in a drunken fog and wasnt there for them. And now they are gone and are now teenagers and i can never go back and fix it. It makes me feel physically ill with sadness regret and.even anger towards myself when i think about it. Maybe you could do a video about it?

I never drank or had any interest or problems with alcohol until I went through trauma at 35. I’m 48 now and stopped drinking. I don’t understand why I developed a problem after going through trauma?

yes we have a wishful thinking that alcohol is a companion and we can enjoy, but reality is nasty feeling in the body especially early in the morning when waking up after a long sleep, getting fired, getting bloated, being known as alchoolic in my block of flats, not being able to be with people because i am too dirty and my clothes are too smelly and dirty, all of these were also before drinking, depression, bad memories, but drinking makes some things worse and makes me tired all the time and sleepy and lethargic and with eyes almost closed, just waiting to expire and go away,.. i am glad we found this in common, this realization that we chase this illusion, thanks

I so agree with this, LD. It's easy to trick yourself into thinking only about the positive memories associated with alcohol when you're getting a craving or confronted with temptation. I do this all the time. But when I was close to quitting, alcohol just zapped me of my energy and my ability to think. It just made everything harder. And I can say that every time I caved after initially quitting, it remained that same effect. There's literally no benefit to drinking anymore. I hope everyone has a wonderful day today.
