In antiquity, Eleusina was mainly known for the Great Mysteries, as the Eleusinian Mysteries were also called, the most famous secret religious rite of the ancient Greece. According the tradition, it was a nine - day festival which taking place in the shrine of Demeter and Persephone each September and it lasted from the Mycenaean time period (15th -13th century B.C.). In antiquity a festival was a period of holy days, sacred time, intended to please the gods and strengthen links between mortals and immortals. The celebration takes a PanHellenic character while many more pilgrims visit Eleusina from all over Greece. Its core was the myth of Persephone’s abduction and the initiates, probably through a symbolic reenactment of the “death” and “rebirth” of Persephone and other sequence of steps, claimed a better life after death. What, exactly this mystic ritual was, no one knows. Because of its secret character, the participants are forced not to reveal the form of this holy celebration. However, we do know that after all the pilgrims were relieved from the fear of death.
The myth and the rites are absolutely intertwined. According to the Homeric Hymn, Demeter, the goddess of fertility and harvest had an only daughter named Persephone who had been carried off and by some accounts, raped, by Hades the lord of Underworld. She was searching everywhere for Persephone for nine days until she finally came to Eleusina during the reign of King Celeus. There, disguised as an old woman, not to reveal her divinity, she presents herself to king’s family as nurturer for Damophon, the son of Celeus. The goddess, grateful for the hospitality, tried to make the baby immortal with ambrosia and secretly at night held him over the flames of the fire.

Thanks Kalliope Papangeli for the clear explanation.
How would the world look like, when not just the winners reinvented history as it is.
The lost sensibility of Greek history, made an ugly violent replacement, which we hardly do overcome.
Let's move on and not only preserve what is left, Greece has something to show!
I will not rest, before I have once been on this site, that's for sure.
    Thanks, :-)

If you ever visit Greece I also recommend visiting the site of Delphi as well as Meteora. A beauty to behold that simple words cannot give them justice.

My thought is that the priestesses of Demeter developed recipes for the hallucinogens that were used in the rituals- they may have even figured out how to cultivate ergot. I imagine that taking part was an incredible ride.

I have heard the story before, but I think Demeter rubbed Nectar onto the baby before holding it over the fire to try and make it immortal.
    Regardless it was well told.

It does, but it is guarded by secretive individuals. You'll never know them.

The sacred road does not exist anymore, only parts of it. We don't know what actually happened at the shrine as details of the process was guarded under penalty if death at the time.
There are groups of Δώδεκαθεούς (believers of the old gods) who do their own form of the celebration. But it's not the same.
It was only until 2006 that Pagans in Greece could worship again and not be persecuted by the orthodox church.

As for the eleusinian mysteries, me and a friend of mine have been looking for answers about them. About its origins, people that took place on the mysteries and generaly about anything that has to do with this sacred ancient ceremony, although without getting any actual answers on the matter. As a person who lives in Eleusis, I can almost ensure that the mysteries do not take place at the moment in the town. You can have a look on this guy's videos about ancient eleusis and eleusinian mysteries (btw when this guy talks about the mysteries he seems to know too much about them). Sorry for my almost unreadable english :D . Take care and keep eating your mushrooms *~*

Same myth compared to Auset with searching and roasting a child over the fire to burn away mortality. The suppossed mysteries have been decyphered already or explained by the Greek philosophers and historians like Aristoteles, Pithagoras, Plutarch, etc.

Religion and god's get their power from "we the people". So isn't it "we the people" that are the real god's? The voice is in "your" head and "mine" but the voice doesn't always agree...can't be the same guy.
