    I bought the 40v 24" whisper model in November and had multiple issues the 1st time i used it. Emailed Ryobi with questions and they wanted me to send it in for their quick repair (like it was a drill or something). The next time i used it a few days later the same thing happened that you experienced with the auger (it was around 0 degrees out). I used it as a plow and just plowed my driveway at full speed since there wasnt a lot of snow and decided it wasnt worth it and im taking it back. Its warm out now and when i went to take it back i tried it and the auger works so something internal must be freezing because like yours i could manually turn the auger. Its getting returned for sure and i dont want to go back to gas unless i have to. So if anyone has had good luck with another battery snowblower please share

    Nice to hear peoples' issues with stuff. As with most big box stores returning something isn't an issue however the travelling, and having to start all over assembling the thing is a total pain. I would have insisted on a rebate for all the wasted time. Apparently ryobi didn't test their product very well.

    Thanks for posting this. I feel better now. Bought mine Jan-3-22 and it worked flawlessly on my big driveway walkway etc. with a 10 in wet New England snow. Today with about 20 inches fluffy snow it almost finished the driveway but stalled and that was it. Same clicking after it warmed up in the basement. HomeDepot was great, and since they are out of stock now, then gave me a nice credit on the exchange when it comes, snow comes, and I can give it another try.
    Kudos on the video editing too.

    I moved from Vancouver to Lethbridge back in April 2021. My buddy worked at Home Depot in Vancouver and convinced me to purchase the 40V Brushless Ryobi 21", with two 5aH batteries. I managed to clear my driveway twice and it died the same death as your machine. I returned it to Home Depot with the very same results as you. They were unable to give me the exact model that I returned so they sold me a 21" version with two 7aH batteries. The first time that I used this new blower I made 4 - 20 foot passes and it died as well. I again returned it to Home Depot, again they offered me a replacement, I decided to go with a 21" Gas Toro single stage snow blower. My experience with the Toro to date has been flawless. I have to say that the cleaning capabilities of the Ryobi and the Toro are quite comparable, they clean right down the the blacktop and they both throw the snow a good distance. My biggest complaint is the noise the Toro makes, it is loud!!! If the Ryobi figures out it's issue, it will be an excellent choice for any home owner. Thank you for sharing your story, I am glad, also sorry, that I was not the only person with this problem.

      As I mentioned in my video, Bought a 21" two battery snowblower last winter. It would randomly stop working. I had to releases the handle, then re-engage the safety handle and push the start button. very annoying, especially when it would sometimes do that every 10 seconds, but never consistently. Some reviews I found online with regards to Ryobi lawnmowers said the mowers did the same thing. The cause was micro "proximity switch" built into the folding handle bars. I decided to return it and buy a new model at the start of this winter shopping either Ryobi would redesign that model or buy a new model. That's how I ended up with the 18" snowblower. Although, I wish I had gone with another 21" unit. I'll make do with the 18". At the end of the day, it just means I need to take a couple more passes to clear my driveway.
      I had considered the Toro, but I was adamant I did not want to deal with a gas powered unit again. The Toro Cordless electric did interest me, however the price of that unit (nearly $1000 after tax) was put-off. Feel in the next few years, Ryobi will figure out their issues and build a solid cordless snowblower that will be a clear choice for any home owner!
      Thanks again for sharing your story, Nelson!

    • @nelsonpeterson6718
      @nelsonpeterson6718 3 роки тому +1

      Did you take a look at your 18" snow blower to see if there is a switch at the bottom, where the handle connects to the body? I am aware that the two switches at the top of the handle exist. It is really too bad that Ryobi has cut corners and put these inadequate switches in their products. When I purchased my first Ryobi snow blower, I also purchase a 21" 40V brushless lawn mower. I used it all last year and I expect that I may encounter these same issues with it in the near future. Again I am glad that you posted your video, as I was unaware of these switches. If I knew about these switches, early enough, I would have kept my first snow blower and bypassed them. It was a very impressive unit when it worked!!

    • @GeoSphere
      @GeoSphere  3 роки тому

      @@nelsonpeterson6718 on the 18” they have eliminated the proximity switched. I believe the big problem with the switches on the snowblowers is that in the cold, the gap opens as the materials contract in the cold. As the switches are mounted in a fixed non-adjustable position thus the gap can not be changed. In the lawnmower versions, the gap remains constant (more or less) as in the summer the mowers don’t see the extreme temperature changes my blower did going from 10°c in the garage to -25°c or colder outside. In my mind, my 21” blower would start cutting out after what I feel would be the time it would take to cool off from being in the garage.
      I also feel the trouble I had with the 18” blower was a failed speed controller module. But I’ll never know for sure.
      Thanks Nelson!

    Talked to our local HD manager about the Ryobi 40v snowblowers. He said he sold about 6 of them last winter, all were returned. Just not heavy duty enough for our snowfall here in northern Minnesota. I have a 26 inch two stage gas snowblower that is going strong after 20 years, so I am set. I just got the Ryobi 40v Powered Snow Shovel, which is good for really light duty work like cleaning sidewalks and decks, but not much more. Like anthing, you have to match the tool to the job.

      @@seanharte10 If you're going to go with a electric two-stage snowblower I've done a lot of research.
      I would go with the Toro E24 or E26, the E26 is your best bet because it has hand warmers, automatic steering, and 7.5 AH batteries. It's built like a tank like the gas version just with an electric motor The parts are identical other than the motor.
      The next would be the Snow Joe two stage
      They came out with 100 volt one that's fantastic Not as good as the Toro but it's a little bit cheaper.
      Then I would go with the Ryobi and the ego two-stage snow blowers. The ego has a super fast charger but they've had problems with the batteries.
      IS THE REALITY CHECK FOR TWO STAGE BATTERY POWERED SNOW BLOWERS NO MATTER WHAT THEY SAY..
      THEY WILL NEVER LAST MORE THAN 30 MINUTES IN ANYTHING OVER 6 IN OF SNOW WITH THE PROVIDED BATTERIES THEY HAVE!! AND THEY TAKE 3 AND 1/2 HOURS TO CHARGE OTHER THAN THE EGO WHICH IS A FAST CHARGER AT 1 HOUR.
      In a big storm with like two feet of snow you're going to be going in every 25 minutes to charge your batteries that take 3 and 1/2 hours. Either that or you have to buy a couple of sets that'll run you $1,000..
      They work just as good as gas ones Maybe even better. Electric has more torque. But what's the point If you have to keep charging them constantly batteries only last about 5 years if you take care of them Then you better spend another $300 a piece to buy new ones.
      The Toro PowerMax E26 and E24 actually have a third battery port which is cool.
      They're all very expensive with the Toro being the most expensive but you get what you pay for it's a better machine. The parts are available just like the gas ones they are identical. Easy to service built like a tank..
      These battery powered two-stage thrower's are only good for a free car driveway 10 ft wide with a small backyard and small front yard. Anything else you're buying lots of batteries and fast chargers You're better off buying the gas version!!

    I had a similar issue with their electric lawn mower. In that case it was a “feature” that if the collapsible handles are not fully extended and locked then it shuts off. Mowing by a bush it had unlocked one of the handles without me realizing and it shut down. Once I extended and locked the handle I was back mowing.

I also did a video showing mine in action due to all the negative reviews there are out there. • @GeoSphere
      @GeoSphere  3 роки тому

      Hi Rich! Thanks for your comment.
      Last year I bought the 21" Ryobi 40V dual battery snowblower. It performed very very well. However, the problem I experience was intermittent cutting out of it when in use. Simply re-cycling the start up procedure would get it going again. It would run for anything from 2 minutes to 10 seconds. after some research online, I found similar reports to my experience on Ryobi lawnmowers. Lawnmowers with the same folding handlebar system. A system that used Proximity switches where the handle bars folded to prevent the motor from running while the handle bars where not locked in position. Apparently with the cold and vibrations, the gap would open slightly and the unit would stop. So I returned the Snowblower a couple weeks after I bought it. By this time it was end of Feb. I figured that there wasn't much winter left, so I decided to wait until the fall and buy an updated model.
      Thats what I did.
      I hope yours has worked well with your recent snowfall.
      Cheers!

    I had the same thing happen with the Ego single stage. On my second or third use It just stopped working and an amber indicator light on he unit came on indicating that a circuit board failure occurred. Ego sent me another unit which I used the following season but sold and went back to a gas unit. Since I didn't own other Ego tools which used the same batteries that I could swap out. I usually ran out of power clearing the snow the plow left at the end of my driveway. I would have to stop for 90 minutes to charge both batteries up. I've had one and 2 stage units but have always preferred a great single stage gas unit over a 2 stage. It's more maneuverable and with is shorter chute clogs up less when handling slush. Even when it does clog you can easily clear the lighter weight machine by rocking it up and down on the ground. You can't clear a heavier 2 stage with its longer chute by rocking it. You have to stop and use that on board tool to clear it. Although the single stage shouldn't be used for snowfalls above 10 inches. I've used it on snowfalls of 18 inches without a problem.

      Joe, thanks very much for your comment! I agree that a good single stage has its advantages over a two stage for lighter, fluffy snow and depths that are up to 12”. It’s really unfortunate that the cordless electric units just aren’t as dependable/reliable as the more established gasoline versions. Maybe in the next few years cordless will get better.
      For me, it was all about the size, weight, noise (very quiet) and ease of off-season storage that made me go electric over my old gas unit.

      Thanks for watching the video. I don’t know exactly what caused it to stop working. However, I have found out from sources at the Home Depot (unofficially) that the control boards have an unusually high failure rate.

    It's a switchboard short that your getting, a shop here told me they have at least 10 of them, the part comes from China, and they say that they have no stock of the part, so Ryobi is forced to replace every snowthrower.

    • @GeoSphere
      @GeoSphere  2 роки тому

      Nathan. Thanks so much for leaving a comment!! Also, thanks for this information regarding the cause of the problem. I’ve heard from many many people who all have experienced the same issue. It seems there is a fault/defect in the manufacture of these switchboards. I hope the replacement boards coming from China are more robust than the ones installed new at the time of assembly in the factory. As well, I hope Ryobi will make changes in their next production run for next season.
      Thanks again!

    Don't think Toro 60V cordless snow blower is better. I used my new Toro 60V cordless snow blower on Dec 22 for the first time. After about 10 minutes, it died. I could not turned it on again. Battery was fully charged. The Toro was retuned to Home Depot.

    A little late to comment here but I own a ryobi lawm mower that had same issues as your snow blower. The problem is the switches ryobi uses. They are super cheap and go bad really quickly. You can take the handle apart and get a switch from the electronics store for about 5$
    I am going to purchase that blower you have with the intention that it will fail one day but I'll know how to fix it.
    Shame on ryobi!

      @@pcho8022 thanks for leaving your comment. I agree. I found information online about the proximity switch in the handlebars on the lawnmowers. If the snowblower wasn’t new, I would have replaced or bypassed the switch system. But it’s new and I should have to do that.
      I ended up buying Toro and haven’t had a single issue with that unit. It was definitely worth the extra money. I made a video about that snowblower if you want to search for it in my channel.

    FYI well he's pretty good but you better off going with Toro.. I had an 15 volt power curve corded snowblower for about 10 years before something happened.
    I also make better battery powered snow blowers they also use the highest quality battery cells.. outs and more reliable better quality.
    Why would you go from a gas snowblower which look like a two-stage to a single stage. That is not a good choice.
    I just went from a single stage electric snow Joe 21-in high quality which is also fantastic It's heavy duty and it's got a cord
    To a two-stage snowblower battery powered.
    That seems like the better move.
    Single stages you have to push and push and push and push and push which is okay for 6 in and below as long as it's not too heavy and wet. Anything more I would want us two stage so we'll push for you chop it down and push for you.

      Thanks for your comment!!
      I did consider Toro. They are very highly rated. But for me, the price point was too high.
      As for going electric, I was tired of a gas blower. They are loud, they rattle and buzz, they are smelly & heavy and take up a lot of room in my shed in the summer for storage. The electric cordless is small, compact and very light weight. The snow I get in my part of the world is very light and fluffy. Never wet and heavy. The amount of driveway and walkway is small so I don’t need a big snowblower anymore. My old gas blower I used when we lived in the country and had a huge area to clear.
