- The Toronto Raptors media has been striking down on Scottie Barnes and the Raptors efforts to build around him for just over 3 years. From mocking his predraft coverage, misrepresenting him as a prospect, to inventing false narratives, to now re-writing their position on past takes and making it seem like they were ahead of the game all along.
Their views are down. Their sponsorships are failing. And while I have been VERY unkind to these figures in the past, let me try another approach. A calmer approach. A less adversarial approach. And if while talking about this, I get super heated and start swearing, well thems the breaks.

They wanted Suggs big time and everytime Scottie got mentioned they would say "Scottie Barnes" in this weird tone and then laugh...everytime. It was fucking cringe man

God forbid we build around our 22-year-old all-star that has received praise from people like LeBron, KG, KD, Draymond etc. Not to mention that while very far along in his development, he still managed to make the ASG. But yeah I guess maybe we are delusional thinking that there’s any chance he can lead a successful team.
There’s no logic in their thinking.. it’s all emotion. Just like the derozan situation all over again.

the media just sucked FVV's ass cuz they loved how he gave them quotes and time. Scottie is young but more talented than any of siakam/OG/Fred which is why Masai smartly pivoted to a Scottie centric team. The media will never like scottie cuz he's young and they think he's immateur ... give me a 22 yr old who isn't. It's about supporting him not bringing him down which is what Masai alluded to. Here's to the next decade of Scottie / Raptors winning.

Absolutely nailed it Rob. Noticed the tone shift towards this current squad from Will and Alex. Also the Toronto media they remind me very much of the UK media. The All Star voting is embarrassing in the lack of support they give their own or Scottie. They hated the fact Scottie still got recognised as an All Star via the reserve list because it exposed their failure to support him in encouraging the public to vote for him.
My take is that there a lot of casual basketball fans in Toronto/Canada which allows negative takes to fly or be more popular as its more "entertaining". That, or much of the media are casual fans themselves..... that said, I still don't get how anyone would get enjoyment from seeing their media outlets constantly (when things aren't perfect) convey a negative perspective on the team they follow. It's legitimately miserable to watch some of these people 90% of the time.

I have never been surprised by Scotty Barnes greatness. When people say nobody could foresee his big leap, I say hello I’m nobody . Before the draft I knew he was the best of the draft.
Scottie Barnes is a much more valuable player than Pascal Siakam. Pascal was too selfish and failed to take reigns and become a leader in Toronto. Scottie is the complete opposite, a selfless leader who puts his team first above everything else. When OG was traded and left a hole in defence, Scottie was the first to sacrifice his position and stats to fill that void for the team. I am glad we have Darko as our coach who shares this vision of Scottie as our leader and gives his full support and encouragement to Scottie.

Ya I used to watch a lot of raptors content but at a certain point I found myself continuously disagreeing with what was being said and at first it was like ok maybe I’m wrong these are so called experts after all. But I watch every game and not only that I don’t just ball watch every game I watch to see who is moving off ball who is doing small positioning things when the ball goes up to give an advantage to them or a teammate to get a potential rebound. And after a while it was obvious if the guy wasn’t flashy or putting up counting stats then they weren’t good to these ppl. So I spare myself the headaches and avoid most raptors media and instead go to other teams media and see what they have to say about raptors players on the rare occasion it comes up.

Thank you so much for this episode. You really connected with me on how I felt after moving to Canada from Nigeria and fell in love with basketball. I would get so upset on how TSN, Feschuk (the son) would cover/write about the NBA/VC. Darren Dutchysen (RIP) used to call NBA players "thugs" on TSN. Feschuk wrote about VC but would repeatedly reference his Escalade, assumptions about his focus because of his cars, and hiphop lifestyle. I was about to get into hockey as a fan back in the early 90s but I pivoted and started hating the sport because of how the media in Toronto treated basketball coverage. I don't hate the sport today but I almost never watch it or pay attention to it. Imagine if they (TSN etc) had been fair in their coverage...I would have become a hockey fan also. I sensed bias, prejudice, and sometimes covert racism in their coverage. It was a shame, and it still is.

My two cents - I think the media was angry that the raps didn’t trade Scottie to get KD. I think fred was furious and let the media know off the record. I also think he shit talked Scottie all the time. They seem to have squashed their beef but I think Fred was mad that he was asked to play more off ball in a contract year for Scottie’s benefit.
I recall Fred saying that the off-ball play was the reason he was playing like s--t. He had the press in his pocket and used the press against Scott
Haters are the lowest level of fan: they don't know the game and expect quick fixes that never work, like trading for an aging star who has lost a step paying them 40% of your cap. The contenders today have patiently developed stars and paid them based on potential are now dominating NBA: Shai, Edwards, Jokic, Tatum Brown. We are doing same with Scottie,RJ and Quickley. It is the right path and the hater can STFU. KD, Jimmy Butler, Dame, Lebron, Splash brothers are NOT the future of the game. Get over it and enjoy watching our under 25 team develop, possibly into something special.

Alex is just kind of annoying at times. Like that one friend who is way more jaded and sarcastic than is called for in most situations. Not trying to tell them how to do their show, but I think they could be a little more self-reflective.

How can you be allowed to work for Rogers who are owners on MLSE and hate on the young core of the team and yet have this love affair with the most selfish player we ever had? The FVV quote (for me) that tipped the media cabal .. was when Scottie's otherworldly enthusiasm for the game ..was right at the doorsteps of his first media interviews... and Fred's comment was... "This will be my greatest challenge" ... it came off as if he needed to bring Scottie in line, before he could be part of the champion club. Prior to that I bought that Freddie was straight up.

Over the last year that I have been listening to you, I have come to know how much you love the Raptors. I followed the thread of your honesty and integrity and landed in the depths of your heart. Just watched the Hello and Welcome Podcast, I didn't hear them underrating our core, I saw it as them saying they needed to see them win more games together before ranking them higher.
I think you'd need to go back to how these 2 have covered the shift from Fred and Pascal to Barnes to understand why they're this low on this core. I'm pretty sure they put San Antonio top 3 and they haven't won a thing either.

Raptors is a multimedia entertainment company and they want to sell tickets to the average fan who by demographics is a middle class Toronto resident and Toronto is probably the most multicultural city in the world. As much as the play on court, so does off the court. As you being in the media business, you know this , but seems that you ignore it here. There has been many great NBA players who never got the media hype as much as they should, because they did not have "media " savvy. It is not white or black thing, it is a media spin thing. Scottie does not have the media savvy. Kawhi was the same way, but he earned via success. Scottie will also. Fred earned via his charity work and connect with his base. He knew how to spin his story. Scottie is more private. Compare David Robinson vs Shaq. Media loved Shaq. As a leader and quality player & human being, give me David Robinson any day. As much as pick on the Toronto Media, overall sports media is trash, not just Toronto. Why people are upset about the NBA on TNT going away, they seemed more genuine. ESPN is just trash hate click bait. Many of the "experts" get paid more than most NBA players who seem to never predict anything right. As if you think it is just Scottie, go see how Toronto Media trash some Toronto Maple Leafs. Go back some years, see Babcock and Marner situation. Now they remain silent after finding out that Babcock is a douche bag.

I am not sure any of the print media or TV media have ever "experienced" or "taught" (played) the game. They can't measure IQ and culture. Jack never rips the Raps but rather "gives credit" to the other team when the Raps clearly suck. The team does have some sway on who says what in the media...in that they can't be overly critical. But the takes of Lewenberg and Smith are the fuckin' worst. Like pontificating from a plastic lecturn. They are laughable.
Scott Barnes is the real deal. So is Pensare which I drafted as my Raptors/basketball source when subscribers were less than 750. Never hear any ramen talk on this channel. 🙂
