The Untold Story of the Toronto Raptors: From 1995 Expansion Team to 2019 NBA Champions

- The Toronto Raptors pulled off what many considered to be the impossible during the 2018-19 NBA season -- winning the 2019 NBA Championship over the star-studded Golden State Warriors.
Toronto Raptors President of Basketball Operations Masai Ujiri made some very controversial decisions before the 2018-19 NBA season, but they all paid off in the end. From firing head coach Dwane Casey after the Raptors' most successful season in 2018 to trading franchise player DeMar Derozan for Kawhi Leonard, Toronto took the NBA by storm in its 24th year in the league.
But the story of the 2019 NBA Champion Toronto Raptors doesn't begin there; It started 25 years ago when the organiztion first entered the league as an NBA expansion team in 1995. From Vince Carter and Tracy McGrady, to Chris Bosh and Andrea Bargnani, to Kyle Lowry, Fred Van Vleet, and Pascal Siakam -- there were so many players that laid the foundation for this team to be successful years before Kawhi Leonard ever arrived in the six.
This On Deck Media documentary/mini-movie details a complete history of the Toronto Raptors organization -- from 1995 expansion team to 2019 NBA Champions.

You can't make a video on the Raptors playoff run without mentioning the MVP.... Fred Van Vleet Jr. Without his timely birth, none of this would have been possible.
antwonfran The real MVP 🐐
Facts. Freddy need to get his girl pregnant again for Orlando
The raps are locked in man, got to Orlando early nobody with the virus, were focused, very mature team I like our chances
The Freddy roar!
Clutch
Man I remember that being a thing HAHAHAH
high key still miss demar. got a pic with him one day while i was working downtown toronto and he was so humble man.
I don't hes a playoff choker
I can't say enough about Demar and what he did for Toronto. I wish more than anything he got a ring too. If anyone deserves it, it's him. Thanks for the comment, and I hope you enjoyed the video.
@@ondeckmedia5190 dude kawhi did what demar couldent do in 9 years in just one year
I don’t
Fucking good vid man
Bro we’re Canadian. When KD was walking off the floor you can clearly see the raptors fans clapping because he was okay to get up. Have you ever watched what people do when someone starts walking off. It’s called respect. Learn some of it.
also i am sure any other fanbase would have been happy for just a split second. just being in the moment and that atmosphere takes you away from how you should really feel towards humanity. we clapped afterwards and that was good
I was at that game, half the fans were cheering and it was messed up. KD clearly tore his achilles and some fake fans didn't realize it. Felt embarrassing to be there for a moment.
@@jayallday_ we also had a fast break
what is messed up is KD played a game in which he shouldn't have, no doctor actually cleared him
GSW should be sued as an organization
It’s because Kevin Durant fell and it also look like we had a fast break point opportunity anybody that wasn’t standing 10 m within KD would’ve assumed fast break point. Nobody had a game whatever clap to somebody getting injured even if it’s the biggest rival
Jay Chang we were cheering because he got back up. Although SOME were being disrespectful but most were cheering for kd because he got back up
When Kyrie Irving went down when the Warriors won their first championship the oracle fans were cheering too. It like the pot calling the kettle black.
Ricardo Matthews I agree with you 100 percent. Never the right thing to do, and it happens more than we think.
I don't like how TO fans were framed when that happened. There's a lot of nuance which happened. It was never about cheering an injury. This is a team which was on the cusp of making history, for a city thirsting for any form of success, in a climate where every newscaster and pundit had the Warriors in 6. They weren't cheering the injury - they were cheering that something was going their way. And it's not like Durant's leg was twisted up like a pretzel, even I didn't quite know what had gone down. He didn't look in pain, he just hobbled and sat on the sidelines. But when we knew it was serious, there was no cheering.................
@@ComboBreakerHD exactly. perfectly said.
ComboBreakerHD thank you, well put. Even KD said this when ibaka had him on his show. Context is important here. That playoff run last year was so special for the city, I mean every single minute of the nba finals was like crack to raptors fans lol. It really was mayhem and KD said it was like a college atmosphere. Fans were gonna cheer regardless of what happened. Fans were cheering because it was a clear turnover by KD and it was a fast break the other way, second at least for me, i was cheering simply cause of karma. The warriors have benefited one way or another from injuries to the other team in their championship runs, seeing KD go down and watching the horror on the warriors faces knowing very well they now get a taste of their own medicine is what I was cheering for. It was the realization of everything crumbling for the warriors and culmination of building a super team that no one can compete against plus the weakest move in history by KD joining a 73 win team, to now seeing them falter and having no depth because their management spent all their money on signing stars instead of actually building a team. It was the greatest satisfaction and reason why I don’t give a single fuck when warriors fans scream “asterisk”
All facts bro
this video deserves more views. editing and storytelling on point!
Much appreciated brotha! Glad you enjoyed it 🗣️
24:18 Stephen A Smith was wrong twice in one prediction 1. Thinking warriors will win. And 2. thinking he’s got 6 fingers on his hand
Another L for Stephen A. He's taking them all over this comment section 😂 Thanks for the comment. Hope you enjoyed the video 🤜🤛
@@ondeckmedia5190 that's because he's a moron
This is great work. That Philly build up was awesome, I had goosebumps seriously. There was a few idiots who cheered at KD, everyone was cheering Serge getting a steal in my honest opinion, when everyone realized he was injured it was not cool to cheer. That being said it didn't take away from the quality of this video. Kudos.
Do you think they can repeat, i think they will at least make the finals. peace
Appreciate that! Thank you! Glad to hear you enjoyed it as much as you did.
I think they have a real shot to repeat. In the eastern conference, I consider them a favorite. I still can't see the Bucks taking them down in a seven-game series. Obviously things get a little more difficult once they would get to the finals. The Lakers and Clippers (IMO) are top contenders right now to win the title.
However, I love the roster Toronto has assembled because of how deep it is top to bottom. They can guard any team in the league, and that is extremely important. Not to mention the unprecedented circumstances for the return of the NBA, I believe, plays to Toronto's advantage. Some teams will not be at full strength and all the games will be played in a neutral location.
I think they have as good of a chance as anyone else in the league under the current circumstances. If they do win, you best believe I'll make another video about it! ✊
Hey man, great video. I don't usually sit down for a 30 min UA-cam video, but this one was worth and it time passed by really quick. Well done brother.

I am so touched by and connected to this video. Being a Dad of 4 boys and being in Canada since Feb 2001, our whole-hearted support is with the Raptors.
Raptors NBA Title meant a lot to my whole family. We all monitored all the celebrations regarding Raptors Championship. It made my family very HAPPY as Canadians because of Raptors success!
My family shall always support Raptors no matter what, because it made as to be proud as Canadians because of the Raptors!
TINTIN MIKMIK This means the world to me. I’m glad you and your family enjoyed it as much as you did. This comment made my day. Appreciate you! 🙏
You know what. I'm gona say it. DeMar is the single most important player in Toronto Raptors franchise history. Kyle is close vince is up there but without demar we might as well of just folded up shop when bosh left us.
I can't make an argument against that. Demar was there from the beginning, and, in my opinion, deserves a ring as much as anyone on the championship team. It's unfortunate that he was on the outside looking in when the Raptors won the title, but that's just how the league is sometimes. I wish more than anything he could have been apart of that team too.
No ring DeMar?
This is a very well edited video this guy deserves more appreciation for his work. Hope one day he becomes big, also I’m a raptors fan
This made my day. I appreciate you saying that. Thank you for the support. I'm happy to hear you enjoyed the video ✊

I got tears in my eyes watching this man. This entire thing was very well done and put together.
Only one criticism while i enjoyed this video i do like how you ignored that GSW Fans were cheering lets go warriors when Livingston poked Fred VanVleet's eye out in the game before KD returned but hey you choose what you wanna remember i guess.
Appreciate that! Im glad you enjoyed it as much as you did. That means a lot to me. I totally agree with you when it comes to that. However, I can only include so much in the video. I remember that KD going down and the aftermath of it was on of the main focal points of the series. It's what everyone was talking about the next day. I'm not tossing shade at Toronto fans by any means, I simply wanted to capture the moment as I, and many other NBA fans, saw it. Thanks for the comment and the kind words!
You know when you just have a gut feeling, or intuition? The day they announced the trades of Demar Derozan and Jacob Poeltl for Danny Green and Kawhi Leonard, I knew they would finally make it to the NBA Finals. I didn't know if they would win the whole thing, but I knew, then and there, that they could finally top the Eastern Conference for a shot at the title.
Raptors fans are used to having higher expectations of their team over those of sports analysts and former players. They've never been a franchise that was deemed as a legitimate contender, as they always crashed out of the playoffs, always at the hands of Lebron James, and that got really frustrating. And people had their doubts about how Kawhi would perform with this new team under less than desirable circumstances, and questions of how "real" his injuries were hanging over his head. So it was a "put up or shut up" year for all parties involved: for players like Kyle Lowry who were written off as a team captain unable to lead his team to victory; for Masai Ujiri who took the risk of breaking up the team chemistry and taking a chance on a player who was deemed a malcontent by one of the most respected front office's in the entire league; and for Kawhi Leonard, who was thought to be using his injuries as an excuse to hold out and negotiate a load-managed max contract when they didn't think it was worth it. This decision could have tarnished the reputation of all players involved, and tainted the Raptors franchise for years as a place where players are sent to watch their careers die.
Luckily my gut instinct was on point, and those scenarios never came to pass. Kyle Lowry is a perennial all-star player and phenomenal team leader, Masai is now heralded as the best GM in the game, and Kawhi solidified his status as a superstar in the league. It also elevated the profile of the other Raptors players on the roster, as well as those of the coaching staff as they pulled everyone together for a title run in less than a year. You've got to admire them for their fearlessness, knowing that there was so much riding on their success, and it paid off. The 6ix is now becoming a basketball hub, and the entire country has embraced this team, and are looking forward to the next chapter. Hopefully they can achieve success in the Orlando playoff format and show everyone they are no flash in the pan. It's a daunting situation they'll have to play in, with their health being of paramount importance, but given the pressures they were put under last season, and knowing the character of the guys on their roster and on their staff, I think they'll rise to the challenge.
I couldn't have said it better myself. The main reason I chose to write and produce this story was for the exact reasons you described.
There were so many controversial decisions made by the front office and Masai Ujiri that could have really come back to hurt the team if those exact moves did result in an NBA Championship. At the forefront was Ujiri's decision to send off Demar Derozan in exchange for Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green. Derozan gave everything he possibly could to Toronto, only to be traded away in the offseason before the team won its first NBA championship without him. But that's how the league works -- its a business, and sometimes we see players get the short end of the stick.
In the end, no one can fault Ujiri or Toronto's front office for any of the moves because it all led to a championship. At the same time, I would have loved to see Derozan get a ring too because of all he did for the city and organization.
Thanks for the very in-depth commentary and opinion on this story. I hope you enjoyed the video! ✊

Thank you brother. That means the world to me, especially coming from a Toronto native! 🤝
Man that was an incredibly well put together video. Made me nostalgic
Before all these people condemning the Toronto fans for "cheering" at Kevin Durant's injury, should look at a show called America Funniest Home Videos (AFV). Correct me if I'm wrong, don't an audience laugh at other people mishaps/misfortunes whereas people tend to get hurt/injured? I laughed when the injury happened because it was a foolish decision for him to return, people who make foolish decisions are fools at the moment and you are suppose to laugh at fools. And get over yourselves he did not die, he will heal and hopefully learn while continuing being alive. That's what matters the most.
I also laughed because of how foolish it was. Just like doing a pole walk and falling on nuts. It's funny because it's stupid. No one laughed at his injury it was definitely laughable because of a poor decision which didnt do jack shit.
That's not a good defense. But I can see why it happened - Toronto was a pressure cooker that night, waiting with anticipation to close out the series on home court in front of the entire country, and right as they were about to take to the floor, they announced that KD would be returning, the one guy that Raptors fans were least thrilled to see in a blue and gold uniform.
So when he started hitting his shots, there was a nervous energy going around the stadium, that if he kept up playing at the elite level he's capable of, they could not only lose the game, but potentially blow the series as well. Who know what could have happened, but it never did. When he ruptured his Achilles, there was a palpable air of relief that KD would no longer threaten to lead the Warriors to another franchise title. Everyone knew what that injury signified - a chance to win their first Championship. So while people were cheering and clapping, it wasn't out of malice toward a player, it was the realization that the largest possible obstacle to their team winning it all had just left the series.
Was it classless? Was it rude? Sure. But I doubt that any other fandom would be expected to have reacted differently in the heat of the moment. Imagine if the same injury under the same circumstances had taken place before the 76ers packed arena, or the fans in Milwaukee if the Bucks were in the Raptors' place - it would have been no different. Painting all Raptors fans as some abnormal, hostile entity is placing all other fandoms on a pedestal they don't deserve. The Raps lost that game by a single bucket that night anyway, so karma's a bitch. The Warriors still put up one hell of a fight, and the Raptors came out on top after battling to the finish. Not much more needs to be said.
Kevin Durant had heart, but football in the groin had a football in the groin
I said it all series long. If KD returned it would backfire on him and look at him now. missed the entire following season.
Bro, you only have 129 subs?! You need more!

You don’t mention Damon or camby but t Mac lol
Yeah, !!
The timeline had Kevin Garnett and Jerry Stackhouse? No Mighty Mouse who led the team and was that years ROY.
Those guys don’t get mentioned a lot and are underrated even Doug Christie
Also don't forget Oakley, Davis, JYD in the early 2000's.
What made this whole championship win so satisfying was how the entire NBA organization had already counted out the raptors way before the pre-season had even started. We had a questionable Kawhi Leonord on the team who was also counted out by the NBA. At the start of the playoffs raptors were automatically counted out on how they were the team that would choke in round one. And how the bucks would end the raptors run and how the warriors didn't need Kevin Durant to beat the raptors to the warriors lost because they didn't have Kevin Durant. And during all this the icing on the cake was Drake.
Couldn't have said it better myself! Glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for the comment 🙏
I heard this but I was not in the arena for the NBA final game 6. So when KD injured and fell down, the cheering was because the fans saw Raptors stole the ball and going towards another basket. Then the cheers later were to encourage KD to get up and hope everything was good for him. Torontonians usually are quite friendly and not really making hates to the opponents. I would rather believe this version. Again, I was not in the game 6, I would not know what really happen there. But you can find some videos explaining that.
I would rather believe this version as well. I didn't mean for it to come across as that black and white. I just remember the narrative on every talk sports show the following morning revolved around whether or not this was the case. Hope you enjoyed the video outside of that one part! Thanks for the comment! 🙏

Totally understand. I just wanted to capture the narrative surrounding the moment after it happened. It seemed like everyone from ESPN to FOX Sports was debating whether or not this was the case. No shade intended by any means. Hope you enjoyed the video otherwise!

You're right! I never knew that until I started researching his story.
Like it or not, if it wasn’t for Vince, it would be another Grizzlies team migrating to the States. Half Man-half amazing made the raptors what they are today. I wish management was competent back then to equip VC with teammates that can compete at a higher level. Only if McGrady would have stayed. One of THE biggest what If’S the NBA has ever seen.
Couldn't have said it better myself. I'm glad the Raptors drafted Carter when they did. He truly built the franchise up from nothing. Thanks for the comment, and I hope you enjoyed the video ✊
Sick video! Mad respect
Kawhi IS the reason why that shot went in. Kawhi was acquired in order to make that type of shot. That shot isn't made by anyone else on the team (even DeMar).
You also discounted the effect that signing Masai Ujiri had. Literally after he was with the raptors they made the playoffs every season since.
Thanks bro for making this videos, brought a lot of memories and joy can’t wait to see what we will accomplish in the future #backtoback?
To make it clear.... fans weren’t cheering the injury... they were cheering the loss of possession.... fans sitting in the upper bowl couldn’t tell he was injured... I know a guy who was in the upper bowl n told me this himself
I didn't mean for it to come across as that black and white. I wanted to capture that moment because it was one of the most debated topics on sports talk shows across the country the next morning. I hope you enjoyed the video otherwise! 🤜🤛
🔥🔥🔥 keep up the good work
vietyunit1989 appreciate that ✊🏻 thank you brother 🙏
man it doesnt feel right to do that to Derozan
Probably the toughest part about making this whole video was having to leave DeRozan out of it. Nothing bad to say about the guy. Plays hard and leads by example. He is as deserving of this ring as anyone else on the team in my opinion.
DeRozan... I really wished that he was on the team when we did it.... after all the heart breaking betayal as a Raptor fan that we had to endure since Stoudemire, it is regretful that we did what we did to THE MOST loyal and in my opinion, tied for the greatest player we've ever had. As sweet as the championship was, it did leave a hole in this life long Raptor fan's heart.
Couldn't have said it better myself. It's the ultimate paradox. I would've loved to see him on that championship team more than anything. He deserved it. Thanks for the comment, and I hope you enjoyed the video.

Lmao funny seeing Lin tweeted about Casey being fired from the Raptors to end up being on the Raptors to win a championship
What a great history lesson.
Well done 👏👏
People always bring up the GS injuries while forgetting the TO injuries. Also that TO was built on depth while GS was top heavy. Health is one of the biggest reasons for a champion to win, grinding through a full season and the playoffs. TO was built to manage it and survive it while GS was exposed for their lack of depth.
Raptors made last season amazing.
Facts! Glad you enjoyed.
It's funny how people criticized Toronto for cheering when KD went down, specially Golden State after they cheered for Kyrie's injury against Cleveland and started booing the call when Pachulia injured Kawhi even after seeing the repetition on the jumbotron

Damon Stoudamire was the 1st rookie of note for the Raps, he was worth a mention.

People be like no KD or Klay. Firstly, Klay was there for almost the whole series until he was injured in game 6, and no KD was just an excuse, the Warriors won without him before SMH.
