Surveillance video: Gas line hit in Three Rivers

- Courtney, a neighbor in the area of Douglas Avenue and Millard Street, provided 24 Hour News 8 with this surveillance video of crews hitting a gas line in front of her home. (Aug. 23, 2018)
Not only the risk of ignition/explosion, that gas can quickly displace all of the oxygen in that immediate area. Had 2 guys at my local gas company working on a simple residential service line, they had done hundreds of them. The conditions that day must have been just right. One fell unconscious, the other went to help him. Both were dead by the time we (FD) got there.
Please share the article
At least they didn't burn. Dead is dead, but some ways of getting there are definitely worse than others.
@@cliffprentice853 .........It was1996........I'm not looking for any article. 👍
The gas companies or at least some quit charging for the loss gas because people were getting in the holes to try and shut off the gas, this is very dangerous, even gas employees are not suppose to go in unless they have every PPE on.
Thats sad to hear but that sounds like incompetence by both workers. I work for a gas company and if there is a gas reading of 1 gas in air, ba is mandatory. If they were working on a gas escape the bloke in the trench should of had his ba on with a means of escape and as brutal as it sounds the second guy should never of gone in knowing he had asphyxiated without any ba on aswell
It’s not easy to keep your cool for the first few moments after the hit. The shock, noise, taste and smell combined is enough to scare the 💩 out of you.
That guy stopped, dropped, and rolled BEFORE the fire.
Gas
sometimes gas fires are completely invisible....
My co-worker hit a gas line at an Elementary school...
The school was evacuated, and a News helicopter soon appeared overhead...
Fire trucks arrived...it was a scene..!
Can't believe dude on backhoe didn't shut it down immediately and vacate. He was still operating it while other dude was trying to get as far away as he could. 😂
Sometimes guys panic and make bad choices once the gas starts ripping, I’ve been there too many times and it’s never good.
He was hoping he could somehow cover up his mistake.
He may not have been able to. The ingested methane could have been running the diesel engine even after the injection pump shut off.
@@gregorymalchuk272 Which is why if there's an air cutoff of some sort, you flip that switch to asphyxiate the engine, then GTFO
Got to undercover the breach anyways
And the utility companies always tell us to call before WE dig
A locator I know said that some construction crews are as dumb as rocks. They don't want to wait for a locator to get there before digging.
They sure didn't seem very deep to hit a main like like that.
Gas lines are only 3 to 4 feet in the ground. These hillbillies in Tennessee only bury the water lines a foot in the ground. One hard freeze and water is running every where.
@@glennjohnso310 you should be reported for abuse/insulting. Just saying.

Sooo loud. The video doesn't do the noise justice.
I believe you. A 22 inch transmission line was hit today and I was about 7-9 miles away and could hear it. Sounded like the roar of a jet in the distance.
That was a high pressure line. Must have been a main line. Better hope they did their 811 call
That wasn’t a high pressure line. Yes, it appears to be high pressure because most people simply don’t have the knowledge to know the difference. High pressure NG lines are welded steel and if a strike results in a rupture, ignition is almost certainly guaranteed due to merely the pressure/volume equating to friction. This is a distribution line and while the inherent danger is no different, know the difference!
Well maybe in your area but that was still a lot of pressure coming out of that line and i work with gas and i can tell you that i can actually remove a cap in a home and dope it and put it back on before the smell even leaves the room im in or better yet i can easily hold my hand over the line and it won't get blown off in fact no resistance at all, so you may be the one to not want to pretend to know everything.
@@johnnycotrel7413 The reason you have such low pressure in your home is because of your pressure regulator. By the time the gas reaches any appliance it’s approximately 1/4(psi) to 1/2(psi). Distribution lines operate anywhere from 60(psi to 150(psi), while transmission lines(high pressure)can reach operating pressures exceeding 1500(psi). Can’t dope that up and screw a cap on!😂At 1500(psi) 1cuft of gas is compressed 600 times its original volume. BTW, I don’t pretend, for 32 years I’ve been dealing with gas throughout my heavy civil utility construction career!
Folks, both of you are wrong , a pressure regulator in a home is ideal but if it fails it’s no big deal, the appliance is that far away from the gas line and that it’s dispersed through other avenues the pressure is high enough but nothing to cause ignition, you could put your hand over it maybe but it’s not something I’d do
@@seventeen912 transmission at 1500/psi. That is massive. Didn’t know this.
LOL that dude shitted his pants for sure.
"Where's the kaboom? There was supposed to be an earth-shattering kaboom."
Looney Tunes! Thanks for that laugh. I forgot about Marvin!
Scrolled down looking for this. Was not disappointed.
I drove past an open gas line once. It was louder than a jet engine!
The last time I encountered such a phenomenal explosion of gas on the job, I was to blame. Late night chips, salsa, and beer might have been the culprits.
That one dude went into his stuntman dive. 😂
Bro saw his one chance to dive like an action hero, and took it.
That was intense! Hope the workers got out of the area safely. 🇨🇦🖖🏻🇨🇦
I love how that dude jumped right out on to flat ground in the wide open 😂😂😂😂😂
Well, fire moves... up i guess? Not a bad choice if there had been an explosion right then. Now what he would have done after its lit is a good question.
Gas
My partner and I were on our property, farm land, digging for his septic and he hit a large pipe in the ground. He shut it down, jumped off, and screamed-RUN! Not much later we found out it was an abandoned pipe. No lines in the area just as we thought. ScArY!
Better safe than sorry!
Where’s the earth shattering kaboom?
Call before you dig!
Me lighting my cigarette:
As a utility locator this why we we exist. At the VERY least call 811 and get them out there but if you can find a local business that does it then that’s your best bet.
Sounds like a high pressure gas line . Hope the operators were fast on turning on the equipment.
Turning off?

The engine sucks in natural gas and the engine wants to run away usually ending in a fire.
Wow that’s scary lol
I have hit a gas main before to a residence, and it was the connection off of an offset main
It is absolutely terrifying. The friction of the gas, leaving that pipe alone can spark fire.
I wish there was a sound warning. Had my headphones in with the volume way up. Was not expecting this to be THAT loud.
That dude ran and ducked like it was a grenade about to go off
"Grenade" is an understatement.
Like any source of ignition could instantly turn a non foreseen area into a sudden inferno
@bradvanbaren1186 as such I'd say its more important to keep running as opposed to superman diving to the floor like you're Tom Cruise in the latest Mission Impossible
He may have tripped?
If its loud to the listener, it is deafening up close. And its randomness makes it dangerous enough for the guy to flip and dive to safety.
No I didn’t. I thought YOU called digsafe.
Did the rolling help? He wasn’t on fire so I don’t get it…
Gas is far too dangerous to use in residential areas. There should be a two-mile buffer zone between any industrial use of natural gas and any residential area.
what happened to calling 811?
Calling 811 is no guarantee that you won’t hit something underground, including gas lines. You would be surprised how often the line was not located or mapped properly and you suddenly find a surprise in your hole. But if you did call 811 then you will not be on the hook for the repair bill when they got the locate wrong.
On the flipside, you will on occasion find buried pipes and lines that no one knows what it is as well.
I hoped it’s been fixed.
Nope, it's still blasting even today.
@@FlyGuy2000, Old faithful! Lol
I figured there would be some sort of mechanical safety valve every so often that sensed when there was sudden pressure flow
call before you dig?
They forgot to call Miss dig 811
A gas leak like that I'm NYC would have us clearing a two city block radius, and the contractor is getting a huge bill. Usually they try to cover it up, they'll backfill the hole and skedaddle but you can't backfill on a blowing main with a 60psi minimum so with the mains they have no choice but to stay😂
R.I.P
Wow
Wow. I had to move my dryer recently to get the broken washer out of the laundry room. I was hesitant unhooking and rehooking the gas, but I didnt have an issue.
Dang
Happened in my city a number of years ago. Diy guys didnt call thebgas company. Blew up the whole house and half the house next door.
Don’t “Call before you dig.” What could possibly go wrong?
Why did that guy throw himself into the ditch???
And yet...the excavator operator failed to turn the machine off. No combustion possibility there...ROFLMAO.
when you haven't done your research for 3rd party networks before you dig
At least they weren’t smoking…
i would still be running
600 PSI of flammable gas!!!
One more scoop and its quoting time.
