80% are not marked wrong. The markout has a 16 inch buffer zone on either side of the mark. You should not be using machinery withing 2 feet verticaly of antmy facility. Hand dig when in doubt and if you are damaging facilities hand digging then you should not be digging period.
Neighbors had work done on their gas meter. Not sure what. They came and marked it running along the fence on their side. Then when the crew showed they ended up digging about 6 feet into our yard to fix it. Whatever they did. Neighbor said they were so deep you could barely see the top of their heads. There was no marks in our yard but all the digging to fix it was way into our yard. Apparently the gas line was marked wrong from what the neighbor told me.
We hit a gas line last week, locator was 10’ off! At least I didn’t have to pay for repairs! Why don’t 811 get fined when they’re off their marks or Verizon when they don’t show up to mark?
811 is a government resource that is not responsible for markouts, they just notify utilities of the location of excavations. Its the responsibilty of utilities to markout within the allotted time frame. If a utility does not do the markout you can call back and report a failure to mark facilities.
@@robertgorski9048 1 call always tells us to file complaints against Verizon but honestly it’s not worth the time. If I know there’s gas or electric near where we’re digging and I don’t see yellow or red marks I call in for emergency locate
I wanted to start a landscaping business but I thought about all of the liability problems that could happen. I read a lot of stories and watched a lot of videos of the dangers that could happen. Everything like being attacked by bees, venomous snakes and spiders. Also gas lines, electrical lines, deep holes in the ground and so on. :(
@@TheViewer01 you thought about everything negative to talk yourself out of it and now your back at square one. I’ve had a landscaping for the past two years, only problem I’ve had is getting attacked by poison ivy lmao. Just have competent people and you’ll be alright
Would be nice if the locators could tell you the rough depth of the lines. Is it 1 ft or 7 ft below the surface. i'll just dig the 5 ft i need like i'm excavating a fossil

You dont have the right to have natural gas delivered to your property. There are other options. You can convert to oil, you can chop wood, or you can convert to electric. Please cancel your service and let me know how the cost of your other options turns out. Also their are third party companies you can switch too as well. Columbia will still be the infastructure you use but a third party will be your biller. Let me know how that works out also. Columbia will gladly cancel your service. But you enjoy the luxury of reliable natural gas delivery to your front door with no thought of how insanely convenient that service is.
Luckily, I didn't hit the electric, water and cable. I had to cross all of those. 811 is bullshit, don't call them if you're digging close to your house. They're too lazy to help you.
You absolutely have the right to dig without a markout. That being said if you damage a facility god has the right to punish you with fire and electricity. And the utility has the right to get their repair compensation. So roll the dice i wish you all the luck with that.
Locating and marking underground facilities is not a science but more of an art, there are many limitations, there are many very lazy locators, the only thing they can mark in CYA. It is best to pot hole the facilities but generally people are lazy and do not want to do it. Some of this stuff can cost you a lot of money, hurt you and even kill you.
Maybe it’s because 80% of the gas locates are miss marked
And maybe cuz 80% contractors don't pothole and identify lines as they should.
It’s almost never the locators fault😂

3 seconds in and the operators hard hat is on backwards. Great demonstration. 😆
Its a different style of hardhat. I thought the same thing before I worked in construction

My neighbor literally just had the entire Fing fire department out here cause they’re decided to excavate a sewage line by there sleds
I'm a landscaper and sometimes we do deep digs and we always take precautions wish more people would u can break that line with a simple shovel

They don’t give depths because if you hit it then it will be their fault.
Its about 10' off.....just 10' off, it will be fine 🤣
lol...telling a contractor the depth is against the law, the locate equipment can detect the line but not the depth, pot-hole and find it yourself.
most contractors dont and wont spend time potholing anything, they just want to dig and choose the cheapest route possible.
It's against the law.

“Leave it to the locators” ahaha that’s hilarious… leave it to the foreman to metrotech the whole job site
811 is a LIE!!!! I called and they told me they don't locate secondary lines. That means from meter to house. I had to locate my own.
Luckily, I didn't hit the electric, water and cable. I had to cross all of those. 811 is bullshit, don't call them if you're digging close to your house. They're too lazy to help you.
It's my God given right as an American to dig a pit if I want to, ain't nobody calling 811 in this house.
Amen brother
Break a gas line the gas company WILL get their money
As someone who marks lines for 811 thank god for y’all. Less work for me!

The way they do things in Texas with no code compliance should be all the reason to call first.

Of course you don't have to call 811, just be prepared to pay for the damaged line you damage!
