I never noticed how different the Waff is until its right next to one of the more traditional Zeon designs. Great story, love the replacement parts bit. Kind of like the unit being on a last stand with no idea when they will be relieved.
Fantastic looking build, as always - especially love the color schemes here, just enough to be unusual but not so much that it looks like you didn't think it through. The small bits of weathering look fantastic too. Completely agree with what you're saying, too - a lot of the time, weathered kits will look a bit overdone (I'm guilty of it, too), and this is a really good middle ground for weathering.
Love the color palette. Also, the Waff is an underrated kit. It may be barebones when it comes to accessories but oddly enough this little kit has charm. Great job with mixing and matching the parts. Looks real neat!
This is awesome! You’re very humble. One thing I love that you do is you really focus on telling a story with your piece. In the future don’t forget a little rust! If you look at modern tanks, especially ones in the field, rust creeps in. Just a little in the creases and joints, you’ve def mastered subtle weathering and people go way overboard. Story wise, high humidity atmospheres may not be something Zeon factored into their prep (in real war details like this go overlooked too!) and maybe they didn’t treat their alloys or paint to protect against something that wouldn’t be a factor in a colony or in space! Please do more of these! I’m working on a “0082 boneyard” diorama based on my trips to Davis Monthan/AMARG, Pinal Airpark, and Victorville.
Indeed, Mobile Suits are so large, and these kits’ scale is so small, most armor vehicle weathering techniques don't make much sense. But I do think weathering is not just about looking realistic. It's also about building a model looks pleasing to your own eyes. I say feel free to take artistic liberty!
The scenery/terrain reminds me of a dried out beach of sorts which really looks cool. I think the mobile suits are especially awesome because their special units like the ones Char Aznable has.
I understand your goal with the weathering with regards to scale, but it's pretty hard to see on any of the mobile suits. I can definitely tell it's near the feet for the most part, but other places where it might be, like on vents or the knees, are entirely absent. It lookd like that stuck two clean models onto a desert base. While the maximum of weathering that less is more always holds true, I feel like there could have been some ways to show it, like chipping near logical edges. If you do it well it won't mess with the scale that much. I will say that the paint job that you gave them is great. Your signature hyper matte finish shows loud and clear. And the actual desert base itself is great looking, you did capture the scale very well there.
Good job. Some advice for future work, advice I was given long ago. Tracks, be they tank tread, tire, foot, or Gundam, tracks add that little next level touch. Base your dirt application on equivilent things you know. This is easy for say a model truck, but for these I would say your own experience getting dirty when active. They're humanoid form machines, so they would get dirty like a person would. And most of all do what makes you happy, they're for you.
you are a great modeler and inspiration, I am currently working on a zaku build like that, and some things Ive learned from the weathering from the diorama is that you take a dry brush and lightly brush up the feet and and the underside of the legs. I love this build so much!

Nice! Ive been using the same scheme for armor color lately, experimenting with a somewhat "hyper military" scheme.... These would also look good with gunmetal brown here and there to give it some more pop💥. Thanks for sharing your build.

Looks really good. I dug the flame thrower. Maybe chop and shape and piece of a transparent sprews for that lit pilot effect. Is that Bamboo for the wood base? Cheap where you are but as far as american woodworking that's "exotic" Quick coat of a really light wood stain or poly urethane (clear coat) will make the wood grain "pop". Also will help hide any dips lol.
Yeah it needs more weathering ant least on the legs and it needs something that we can compare the scales like parts of a car, I know, since one is looking down maybe a tire prints in the mud like there were a car, that could help with the sensation of scale. But at always, an awesome job, love the kitbashing.

These look great, I’m sucker for Goufs though! Your terrain looks really nice, I’m working on my first scenic base and hope it comes out nearly as well. The only thing I’d add is a little more mud/dust on their feet to make them look a little more in the world. Came out really nice though, excellent work.
Really good job. I love the composition and the little elements like trees and roots. The terrain looks convincing; there's a nice color variation going. Also, as you said, the feet sort of sink into the ground, and that adds a great deal of realism. As for the weathering, I agree that the chipping should be kept to a minimum (and you also executed it very well), but I'd add a bit more dirt, since weathering is not limited to just damage. Even though I think you did a fantastic job making the MS look like they belong in this environment, I'd apply some wash on the lower areas to further blend them in with the base. One final thing would be to paint the frame of the diorama black, so as to isolate it from the surroundings and break up the monotony. I like the raw look of the wood as you do sometimes, but with the sand and the khaki on the MS the scene gets a little monotonous. All in all it's a great piece; I'd love to see it under natural sunlight 👌
I think the base looks great, and it fits the mobile suits well. I'd like to see more of such stuff from you. Not to say that wood blocks are not nice, but this looks like a slice of a world, and not just a very intentional display base. One thing I still miss in these final reviews is audio and video sync. I'd like to see what you're talking about, and sometimes you'll be talking about the base over a closeup of shoulders and heads so it's a bit harder to understand everything and I find myself skipping back and forth. Congrats on third place, btw!
If you did a little drop of hot glue on the Waff's flamethrower pilot light could shape it while it was warm. Let it dry then hit it with a little paint to make it look lit I think that would go a long way in selling it. As would your idea of doing some charring at the nozzle. Personally I think the water looks good cloudy. I mean you got these big suits walking around it. Disturbing stuff below it, knocking sand into it. Wouldn't expect for it to be crystal clear so I'd say happy accident if it's not what you were going for.
I really like what you did here, great job on the modelling front! If I may raise one point: you say some things don't come out in the video, but isn't that due to your style of presentation? You could have taken detail photos and incorporated them into the video. That would have raised your editing time but also the quality of the video, because you would have had to be more precise in your commentary and less stream of conscious. Looking forward to your next painted build.
The water glaze looks like it's a top coat issue. Any varnish that comes into contact with water effects always muddies it up and creates that frosted doughnut glaze look. I'd save water application after you've sealed your diorama and add it as the last feature. also painting the standing point where the foot will be center mass a darker brown and fill with lighter shades will create a visual sinking look that adds depth and creates a sense of mass. It's weird I know and before you add the final water effect it looks tacky, but trust me it looks and adds so much when adding water depth and volume to your pieces. Great work man as always.
Yes any varnish causes that gooey glaze look. Usually you want to treat the liquid effects as it’s own varnish. Like a really soupy clear varnish. Keep it up good sir
How do you get such good coverage with your colors. These look just like matte plastic parts. I know you use an airbrush but what paints are you using? These look so nice.
Hey Zack. I was wondering how you go about doing the gloss coat for decals. Do I just need to do a dry coat to seal my paint job and then go about decal and panel line. Or should I go for a super glossy finish. I'm using an airbrush for the gloss coat aswell. Wet coats of gloss kinda scare me. Any advice would be lovely.
I think these look really great. I understand your thinking that the weathering style where the oil streaks way down the length of the mobile suit are not realistic. I would say that all depends. As wars crap on supplies are more and more limited. Also a mobile suit in continual battle would not have time for cleaning etc. There are lots of ways that can play out. Either one can be right. I would say they would be getting hit by other suits or ground troops and have damage from that. It all depends on the story you want to tell. I think you should try some builds where you are less timid in your weathering and battle damage. It’s all a matter of taste though. I don’t mean to imply there is a right or wrong way to do any of it. I’d just love to see you push it further. Failure is ok too. Nice work. Thanks for sharing.
I think the only thing that bothers me is the white parts. They seem too bright/clean and out of place a bit. Other than that I really dig your thought process for these and the execution is superb.
also there's people who worked in the Tokusatsu industry building miniature dioramas for life for shows in the likes of Ultraman and Super Sentai where they have giant monsters and robots.

I dunno what kinda wood it is, but it’s from Daiso (dollar store) so nothing too fancy!

Yeah he can't exactly grab them with the flamethrower. I think the peg is on that side of the tomahawk, so that's probably why.

You could dab on some soot on the flamethrower barrel right now. The pigments stick better to flat coat anyways.

I see a lot of hangar/space dioramas with to scale figures but it'd be cool to see a diorama like this with figures to give it more scale

Yeah pretty wet will make your life a lot easier. You’ll hate the way it looks but just have faith once your matte coat is on it’ll all come together
