His live performance in the Kit Kat club was overpowering in the best sense. I was completely jaw-dropped and speechless from the first note to curtain.

I’ve never cried at the opening number before?? I had the thought “oh wow, this cast is brash and bold and they’re all so diverse!” and then I remembered how the play ended. It feels like the end of the world to Clint, so I take comfort in this show as my little world ends, bit by bit.
The Show is so amazing. Eddie is a master of his craft and Gayle Rankin was amazing. So blessed to see them twice, one in the front row of the mezzanine and at the floor level in the dining seats by the curtains where the performers walk out of. Unbelievable experience. Broadway is amazing.

When done with the perfect amount of energy, the climax goes SO hard. The only other versions of this song that capture that energy is the Broadway trailer for Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club, and two of the West End trailers imho!
Personally, I have mixed feelings about this cast, but that dosent change the fact that the proformance was absolutely phenomenal. I loved how energetic and committed they were. The vocals and delicacy of the movements while having that eerie feeling is a vary had thing to do yet Eddie Rhymen (sorry if that's not the right spelling) did a good job at nailing it. So overall a 8.5/10 :)
When I saw MJ the Musical on Broadway, Cabaret was right across the street and both of the shows let out at the same time and so when we went to the stage door to meet the actors of MJ, we all of a sudden heard a loud cheer from across the street and there is Eddie Redmayne lol. Before we even turned around, the woman next to me said, “I bet that’s Eddie Redmayne”

Someone pointed out to me recently he's also very much like a Shakespearean fool; silly, over the top, but also often secretly smarter than much of the rest of the characters, and almost always the only one able to call out the problems for what they are, using their jokes to tie the historic tragedies to the modern audiences' lives.
I think that's exactly what makes it so brilliant. Joel Grey and Alan Cumming's Emcees are brilliant as well, but there's this eeriness and creepiness to Eddie's version that truly stands out to me. I honestly don't have a favorite, I love them all for different reasons.
I heard someone describe Eddie's movements, as Emcee, like that of a marionette's. Sharp and jerky. And, while I'm sure that was meant as a critique, I think it works so well and brings a strange otherness to the character.

Thanks for uploading this. So far, I've only heard audio of Eddie Redmayne's Emcee, and this is the first time I've actually seen his performance. Somehow, it's even more offensive than I could've possibly imagined from the audio alone. Glad the curiosity is sated.

I mean, I doubt his performance was that much better, but as someone who does not, in fact, know better: who knows?!

This couldn’t be further from Weimar Berlin. We only have to see Dietrich in The Blue Angel. And why is every new production making Sally more and more grotesque and uncouth? She was naive, self absorbed and a fantasist, but she wasn’t so grotesque and base. As for the Emcee, well no one can top Joel Grey, though Alan Cumming at least captured the sinister sexuality of the time. This cast and production just tries far too hard to be different.

You've missed the entire point of cabaret. Alan Cummings version has a sexy sinister under tone that by the end of the show you understand WHY his performance is so alluring and enticing. It's like he knows something you don't, and you really want to know. Eddie Redmayne's is uncomfortable, and off putting yet strangely playful, full of joy and childish. Every MC has his thing. I think Eddie did it well. Which considering the ending is also good. The MC is not supposed to make you feel secure or comfortable. He is misleading you into laughing along, so that by the end of the play you're left wondering "What the fuck just happened?"

That's the point of the musical - political apathy and wilful ignorance in favour of entertainment and false security. He is meant to make you lower your guard and ignore the rising conflict quite literally on stage in front of you. That's what makes it so impactful when the ending twist gets revealed, whatever the twist may be. Eddie is a wonderful actor and his performance in Cabaret is absolutely incredible, no doubt about it. But the reason why so many people don't like this particular reimagining of the Emcee is because it kind of misses the point. It's glaringly obvious from the very start that something's not right. He doesn't lure you in, he doesn't lull you into falsified safety, he's creepy and off-putting from the very start. I just don't think this Emcee fits the show's message and narrative. Having in mind the ending of this particular production (which I won't spoil) paired with the fact that Hitler is said to have been incredibly charming and charismatic, a much more impactful character, in my opinion, would have been if they amped up the Emcee's charm and charisma tenfold; make him as likeable and sympathetic as you possibly can without sacrificing some of his characteristic "not-quite-rightness". Then, once you've made the audience feel safe and secure in their delusion that safety in the club is guaranteed, make the grand reveal. Make the audience perpetrator, not just spectator.

this is unbelievably annoying and totally wrong footed from the jump. the emcee is meant to have been the nightly MC of a cabaret not a fae prince who helped the nazis rise to power. Do people not get that the reason he looks spooky is that he is a ghost? Cabaret is a show where the audience is visiting the former site of a Berlin night spot and the ghost of the former emcee is imparting a vision of the terrible fates that befell the spirited who haunt it. This “tee hee i’m doing the holocaust aren’t i a dreadful little imp” thing is not just grating, it’s fundamentally ridiculous to believe people would go to a club where the nightly constant is a guy acting like this. This is worse than an aggressive bar trivia MC. This is worse than a wedding DJ who singles people out to shame them for not dancing. This is worse than a corporate-hired inspirational speaker doing mandatory team building trust falls. When an art scene begins to become actively hostile to its audience as a form of gatekeeping, especially when it’s already prohibitively expensive as the primary gatekeeping mechanism, it’s time to pull up and let the old guard rot. Cabaret is a tragedy that is genuinely heartbreaking but it should not be actively repellent, it should be transportive. The emcee should be UNIRONICALLY inviting the audience to be swept away. This sucks

I think eddie is fantastic. Hes really got such an underrated singing voice and i love how he executed this interpretation of the character.

The music is great but Eddie sounds like he's having a seizure and stroke during this. This is honestly the worst Emcee.
this is unbelievably annoying and totally wrong footed from the jump. the emcee is meant to have been the nightly MC of a cabaret not a fae prince who helped the nazis rise to power.
Do people not get that the reason he looks spooky is that he is a ghost? Cabaret is a show where the audience is visiting the former site of a Berlin night spot and the ghost of the former emcee is imparting a vision of the terrible fates that befell the spirited who haunt it.
This “tee hee i’m doing the holocaust aren’t i a dreadful little imp” thing is not just grating, it’s fundamentally ridiculous to believe people would go to a club where the nightly constant is a guy acting like this.
This is worse than an aggressive bar trivia MC. This is worse than a wedding DJ who singles people out to shame them for not dancing. This is worse than a corporate-hired inspirational speaker doing mandatory team building trust falls.
When an art scene begins to become actively hostile to its audience as a form of gatekeeping, especially when it’s already prohibitively expensive as the primary gatekeeping mechanism, it’s time to pull up and let the old guard rot. Cabaret is a tragedy that is genuinely heartbreaking but it should not be actively repellent, it should be transportive. The emcee should be UNIRONICALLY inviting the audience to be swept away. This sucks
