Omar, Thank you for the excellent review. Like you, I also have Nikon Z6ii and Z7ii bodies, but I purchased the Z30 for three purposes: 1) Use as a Lightweight, compact travel camera, 2) Recording Video Testimonials for my business, and 3) Use as a high-end Webcam for Zoom meetings. A nice feature is the Z30 can send the video signal over a USB-C cable via the Nikon Webcam Utility while receiving power over the same cable. This is something the Z50 cannot do; the Z50 requires both an HDMI and USB cable. Regards, Steve

First, it's hard to imagine that you do NOT moonlight as a comedian with that effortless rapport and delivery of yours. I laugh at least two or three times each vid because of your antics.
Second, this is the Z series camera that got me started down the path with Nikon's mirrorless offerings. I was looking for something super-lightweight and small for travel snaps, and so I picked up the two lens kit (16-50 and 50-250) and an FTZ II to try out some of my F-Mount G lenses on it. I was so impressed that within three weeks, I had traded in my beloved D750 and 24-120/4 G VR on a new Z6 II and 24-120/4 S. Eight weeks later, I only have my 70-200/4 G VR left and five Z lenses in my bag with two more incoming.
The most shocking realization for me with the transition from F to Z was that the Z lenses are SO much better than their F-Mount counterparts (95% of the time) when it comes to IQ and microcontrast. I feel that the DR and noise handling of the D750 sensor can hang pretty tightly with the Z6 II, but the Z glass is incomparable.
Once I had the Z6 II in hand and started comparing the Z30 images to it, I will admit that I was a bit, "UGH!" at the high ISO noise and lack of clarity at said ISOs, but it doesn't make me want to not use the Z30. I have a simple rule to live by that if I'm going somewhere that might present the opportunity to create wall art, I'll pack the Z6 II too, but if it's just digital sharing/flickr-worthy content, I'd be totally cool with the Z30 as my only stills camera when out and about as long as I pack my Z 35/1.8 S in the bag for low-light situations. That 52MM FF FOV equivalent is quite nice on the Z30.

I agree! Post pandemic, online purchasing now feels crap! Especially for higher ticket purchases and especially consumer electronics.
Also, people like my uncle lose out on business in their brick and mortar stores to big online behemoth who make their millions dipped in the sweat of underpaid, exploited workers and then proceed to give us crappy customer care with ill-informed customer care representatives.
B & H or any of your local brick and mortar stores are always the way to go. Also, it is a great place to network with other like-minded people

Cool review of the Nikon vlogging camera. By the way: When the light is good I use my Z7 for vlogging now. I just put on the Kit APSC Kit lens and this is a very light package. Also when using it in crop mode the video sensor readout is oversampling not line-skipping, as in full frame. I put that strange looking mirror accessory on the the hot shoe, so I can see the screen. For audio I use the small Deity video mic. This package is even cheaper for vlogging, when you allready own a Z7.

The flat profile is like a little baby log profile, and you are meant to do light grading in post with contrast and saturation.

I am a frequent visitor to this channel and have mentioned before I came from Olympus gear. I purchased my Z30 for still work. After using Olympus EP-L bodies for years the lack of a viewfinder didn't bother me on the Z30. What I wanted was a super light, small body. And even though I have a Z50 and Z5 the Z30 rounds my kit the way I like. Uses the same battery as the Z50 and basically is a Z50 without the viewfinder. I liked seeing the ISO tests, but is it really fair to compare a Z6 FF (any version) to a Z30 APS-c? Maybe I missed something because I don't do video. Thanks as always for the great content on your videos...

I bought the Z50 last year as a travel and general walk around camera. The Z50 is like a Z30 with an EVF. I didn't expected this but I really love this little camera. Great image quality and build. The kit lens is great for travel as well. In low light I would indeed put another lens on it. For video, there is a good option with Viltrox 13mm f1.4. I hear great things about this lens.

    • @markshirley01

@Phillip Banes The usage of the Z mount is actually a brilliant move of Nikon.

    • @pascalhibon7928
      @pascalhibon7928 Рік тому +3

@Phillip Banes Oh yes there are plenty of reasons why this is a brilliant move. To name a few: 1) pricing: developing a new mount for the APSC camera line would hugely increase the costs of that system. 2) by using the Z mount brings the complete lineup of Z lenses to the APSC cameras. 3) developing a smaller mount would not significantly reduce the size of the camera body; there are other components who "define" the size of the camera. 4) by using the Z mount also reduces the total portfolio of the system. This is crucial to reduce pressure the supply chain.
If you find the Z30 too big in size there are plenty of other camera systems you can look at. Maybe the Z30 is not a camera for you.

@@phillipbanes5484 I have Sony APSC cameras. My daily shooter for street and everyday photo is an A6000. I hate it, is so small that is uncomfortable. My hand hurts if I use the camera for much time. I cannot use big lenses handheld comfortably. Today I tried a Z30 and Z50. Oh man!!! What a difference!! It was so much different that I'm thinking in migrate to Nikon. The cameras need size and grip, and I have very small hands!! For somebody with big hands Sony is a torture!

    • @amermeleitor
      @amermeleitor Рік тому +1

@@phillipbanes5484 my hands are very small, in fact I'm a XS to S size human 😅. A grip could be a solution, but it's better when the camera is a little bigger, with a bigger camera you can have better buttons layout, more ergonomic and accessible. With a grip you cannot change the questionable buttons position. Sony is better with their Full frame line, but the APSC line is a ergonomic mess even for small hands like mine.

For long recording, use USB charging to reduce the chance of overheating. Also use Snap bridge with a smart device or tablet. That'll cut the LCD screen off.
Like any mirrorless camera especially one this small you really need a heat sink. My suggestion would be to mount an external monitor to it's hot shoe or off camera so you're not running its LCD screen and make sure the EVF is off.
Also for streamers, you're better off outputting to 720p so you can use more ISO. Downsampling will hide any noise and make the image look better. No one will be able to tell the difference between 720p, 1080p, or 4K. This is why news station still broadcast in 720p. They down sample 4K 4:2:2 30p. Also try using Active D-lighting which I know real estate photographers use for tours. It'll give you the full dynamic range of the sensor. Flatten the profile and you'll have even more to color grade and adjust than simply using a flat profile.
He's absolutely right, upgrade the lens to f/1.8 or faster

I dont think the lens closes down the aperture when you zoom in... The aperture stay wide open (if you set it at 3.5 at the wide end), but the focal ratio (you know, the f number) itself become smaller as you zoom in, because the focal length increases but the actual size of the opening at the telephoto end can only go up to 50mm/6.3 = around 8mm.

I just happened to have ordered the Nikon Z30 from BH and added some Nikon extras at heavy discount. FTZ adapter, different lens etc at roughly 1/2 off. Anyway I was looking for a knock about camera that takes good video, and better than go pro. I've tried GoPro and Osmo. disheartening at best. Was looking for decent video out of the box either in flat or adjusted standard color so little grading in post.. the idea is to start creating video again.. I do have a BMPCC4K with Metabones 0.64x speed booster and dozens of lenses... for my stills I shoot currently mostly my Nikon D700. My goal for this camera is to put me, my gear in the shot while I either review gear and documenting my feral kitty rescue (Alex's Feral Kitty Rescue Project) which will be a new channel on UA-cam late 2023 and Facebook group... So this camera I'm planning is to be the glue to piece stills from Nikon DSLR (raw only) and BMPCC4K BRAW and tie them together and always in the car and easy to use.. ideally a full frame would have been more fun for my vintage and recreation lenses like Lensbaby Twist 60. But we will see how this works for me. I have a lot of hope that it's decent and the price point was right. I've always preferred Nikon color to most any other cameras system. So I'm glad I was able to rationalize a new Nikon. If this works like I hope, then instead of a Z6II later this year, I could go with a late model (newer) than my D700 or skip and go to Z7II etc. and it would be mostly for stills.. my BMPCC4K and Nikon Z30 would handle video for cine and doc/blogging respectively. Now is Z Nikon makes a Cine body with build in ND filters combined with their NRAW and maybe add cinema DNG raw with a low resolution 4.5k full frame with fast read.. metal, with acting cooling and then online fly shoot as still.... I would probably move to that from BM... though I have no issues with BM.. just wishing they either made a full frame or at least super 35 in a decent mount.. not a Canon vintage mount... please someone tell BM to go to modern shallow mirrorless mount so we can mount any lens to the BM super 35, and probably with a speed booster to get full frame if we want.. Sort of like how my JVC LS300 has a larger than super 35 sensor with MFT mount... then my speed booster 0.71 turns my JVC into a full frame video camera.. too bad it was only 8 bit... no raw video... JVC could have been epic. Thank your for posting.. looking forward to getting my Z30 to add to my kit.

    Thanks for your video.
I had been thinking about the Z-30 for a couple of weeks now.
I own most of Nikon's prime Z lenses and a couple of Z cameras.
I had watched several Z-30 videos, YOURS convinced me NOT to buy it.
As I see it, its not worth the time, money or effort.
I had the filmmaker's kit in my shopping cart, I just hit the DELETE button.
    THANKS!

So a few months later I ended up buying it. (I love it!)
It is a light weight alternative to my heavier full frame Z’s.
Because of the big screen live view, you get to preview your desired image and capture it, regardless of what the light meter may say.
      its a Z thing!

Did you have any issues with it overheating? Mine overheats at 4k 30 in about 15 mins in an airconditioned room.... much shorter than the time limits in the manual
There are a few comments online about this issue... hopefully its not the D600 all over again.... (Sensor spots issue) I got a free upgrade to a d610 back in the day

@@ogonzilla thanks for the testing. It seems some cameras are worse than others but according to Nikon Australia it’s to be expected.
Plus setting it to 4K 24 or leaving the arca-Swiss base plate on so it acts as a heat sink if I want to shoot in 4K 30 extends the record time to 52 minutes.

EVF - I guess that would be the z50 then - once it's upgraded to the II version.
Personally I will go for the z30, even shooting mainly photos. It's gonna be my everyday cam at home in my office bag, and I appreciate the minimalist approach Nikon went for. Keeps price and size down, and shooting with LCD is in my opinion much less an issue as often claimed on the net. Got plenty of use from my Nikob j5, no, didn't miss a viewfinder, but then I use this essentially as my 'phone camera', not my main cam.
If Nikon had put in IBIS, viewfinder, headphone out, etc, this would rather be a $1200 cam, not the $700 entry level video/stills hybrid it is.
Looking forward to the upcoming 12-28 Dx zoom, will add my 50 2.8 Macro as a small tele, versatile little setup.

I really do not see how this kit, or any other 'slow lens' kit can compare with any of the phones out there, with their f1.7 aperture, computational photography, and software gimmicks, for a regular person that wants to take some photos there is nothing better then a phone, especially iPhone or Pixel, even Samsung offers so much. On the other hand, for anyone wanting more the kit lens is not an option.
