- I made fun of this camera when it was announced. On paper, it lacks everything you'd think makes a camera good. Terrible specs, no 4k 60p, no 10 bit,, only 120 fps slow mo, no IBIS, no Log. But why do I love this camera so much? Meet the Nikon Z30 with the 12-28mm f3.5-5.6 Z lens. @@Fessoid best to use a flat profile, decrease sharpness and contrast. I usually use the portrait profile.
Colors are much better than Apple phone colors. But each to their own.
At 19:14 was the colours of that squirrel in real life black or brown? If it was more black/grey then Nikon has the best colour science in the industry. At least it LOOKS more pleasant on skin tones, it doesn't make your cheeks excessively red like a freezing child in the cold waiting for their dad to pick them up after a hockey game but he forgot and is drinking at the pub.

Honestly this is my take pn Nikon in general. Ive owned Fuji, Sony, and Canon as well, but so far nothing beats the rendering of nikon SOOC for a realistic balanced look.

The Z30 is a super sweet camera., I have been a Nikon freak forever, and while I have bodies 4x as expensive, the damn Z30 is still my favorite. It's just a fun camera that impresses.

How usable is the Z30 for photography? Is the lack of viewfinder a big problem? Are the photo menus and user interface like in the Z50?
I sold my Z30 and got the Zfc instead . The lack of viewfinder is a deal braker . It's very hard to correctly expose photos . Z 30 , Z 50 and Zfc share the same menu and all software ( it's the same camera , just different look and price ) .
It has slow autofocus and shaky stabe. Seems pretty unusable as a video camera, let alone vlogging.

I love how he is slowly just realising that Markus was right all this time, if you have good lighting and set the camera up correctly, you do not need LOG. Any camera can be good in the right hands.
Great point. My opinion is that you spend more time adjusting LOG and end up with a worse image than the standard PP/picture profile. These engineer dudes spend a lot of time getting the image awesome. It only makes sense for challenging lighting situations where you have a client … otherwise, JUST MOVE or FIX THE LIGHT.

I mean there is legitimate use for 10bit log, but more with more serious production stuff. For daily yt talking head/vlog it‘s kinda overkill

It also saves time, in TV production which I worked for many years it was common for the videographers to spent a lot of time adjusting the camera for each situations, most TV cameras back then could have multiple profiles that you switch between, basically custom profiles you have today in cameras, one for outside, one for inside with warm lights, one for inside with cold lights and the list goes on.
You have no idea how much time this saves during editing, today its the complete opposite, people have the fanciest Sony A7 camera, shoots everything in LOG, spends HOURS editing the footage and processing it afterwards, and most these guys use auto white balance, its about that point I gave up and quit.
I think the point of editing your photos and videos at the computer is soul draining, its not fun, the fun is to take all these pictures and videos, not sit in your office chair editing all this crap for hours on end afterwards when you could be editing or publishing.
A lot of people complain about JPEG's and I agree a lot of them sucks, but most people also seem to neglect the fact you could DOWNSCALE them, 24 megapixel down to 12 and they would be perfectly usable LOL
@@schultzeworksI have a friend that have a business about small video production (conferences, interviews, musical videos, small ads for restaurants, etc). He told me that they never uses log or anything fancy. The lights and good camera settings are key and even if you only record in basic profile you can fix some things in post if necessary. He values the faster overall work and the less storage needed.
I use a color calibrated monitor because I make prints of my photography (I know loser), and a pro photo printer needs a calibrated monitor for true colors. That said, watching this video the Nikon is the only one that had amazing colors on my monitor. All other camera companies color science, especially Sony (Canon is decent), are so overly orange that it's almost offensive. I think Nikon does the best color science, and as far as dynamic range, it hurts when you spend all that money for 10 bit log, and are being outdone by 8 bit active D lighting.

In any case, I think that Sony performs worst in photography, especially in the reproduction of skin and skies.
Sony has just few problems: too much orange, blue deficient, highlights blowout, flaky AWB, flaky exposure metering. Otherwise it's great. 😅
Nikon has always had great colors going back to the D70. Exposure too.
Viltrox and Sigma actually have some 1.4 wide primes for the Z30 now, even with AF

I’m not a vlogger, but have to admit, the Z30 footage appears to handle different lighting situations best if I just wanted decent footage right out of camera. Hoping they make more DX lenses, but nice that Sigma brought over their 1.4 trio to the mount.

That Nikon looks fantastic to me. Reminds me of back in the day when I had the Nikon D750 for a short time. The video image out of it was shockingly great. R8 looks awesome too as far as the image quality and stabilization, but I can't say it's better overall. My current go-to is still the EOS R, so I can't wait for your comparisons of the three!!
I love this guy..I was wondering what tweaks should i make on the nikon standard mode...usually the standard profile looks over sharpened and contrasty..but z30's footage looks better than any of the other cameras compared here..specially how well it exposes the face without blowing the sky..amazing!!!!
I picked up Nikon z30 for very specific photography and video work. And it’s fun to use. I might have to get a zf for full frame 10 bit alternative.
Thought the Z30 looked so much better than the Sony FF, must be your tweaks! Z30 colours really did look good in standard. Sony 3000 was good as well, but sadly, Z30 a lot better, but 3000 easy to use. Action 4 very good, but Z30 better. R8 looked good, but often preferred the Z30. Close either way. Do wish the Z30 had a viewfinder…wait a minute isn’t that the Zfc? Much in way of lenses for z30 (small and light)? Great video!
The z30 with that lens is roughly the price of an Oly Em10 iv. Let that sink in. As for dynamic range, that's pretty much been Nikon's speciality. The D850 I think is still the no 1 digital cam in terms of DR, and their Z-bodies carry on the tradition. First thing You notice when using a Z-mirrorless is the amount of detail You can pull from the shadows.
It's fake processing with shadow lift. It just makes it look like wide dynamic range, if you're not used to critical viewing of footage.
@@audioupgrades you can turn off Active D-lighting in any Z camera - it does not impact the dynamic range You get when shooting raw.
@@audioupgrades ig people lifting shadows in post-processing is fine, but if done in-camera to save time is a no go? ok sure.
@@turnipbeybladespinner7836 It's not OK if you do a camera comparison without realising that one camera applies shadow lift and the others don't. The Z30 has bad autofocus and worse stabe. It would be idiotic to use it as a vlogging camera just because of the shadow lift, which you can apply to any camera in post.
DR is pretty much similar among all cameras using Sony sensors. It's all processing, demosaicing, tone curves. Process Sony raw files with DXO and you get clean and sharp shadows.
The Nikon vlog looks fantastic. The Canon r8 looks more cinematic here because the background is slight out of focus, but did not expose as well. I really wanted to go Nikon for budget Wildlife photography. But I ended up getting the Canon r7 and the RF 100-400.
You know the Z50 will probably get a refresh SOON, and you'll want that for the Expeed7, and hopefully IBIS and a few other surprises. I liked the Z30, but I need an EVF. The Nikon 26mm is really nice, but has NOISY autofocus. The 24f1.7DX should have been a 22f2DXVR. You can adapt ANY e-mount lens to Nikon with the Megdap ETZ21 pro. Not to mention how gimbal friendly it is.
However, my A7CII is REALLY nice with HEIF+HLG+aRGB, and that is coming from a Nikon guy.

I've been a subscriber for years, and a Nikon Z50 owner for years, often wondered why you didn't give the Z30/50 more of a chance, given the great image quality and how light it is. It could definitely do with more wide angle auto focus lenses though. Keep up the good work, hoping you'll take the "Ace" Insta360 new action cam out for a spin soon.
The Viltrox 13mm or Sigma 16mm wide angle lenses are great for the Z30
Nikon is lacking APS-C lenses, the third parties like Viltrox are unacceptable due to being large, heavy, and poor quality.
@@USGrant21st Viltrox? Poor quality? Man, you are living in the past. Try the 75mm f1.2 and learn about quality. The Sigmas are great too, the 56mm and the 16mm are very good lenses
@@amermeleitor I have zero interest in 75/1.2, if I ever needed that focal range I would have got Samyang 135/1.8 for my FF camera, which is better in every respect.
The small compact Nikon 12-28 dx lens is a sleeper hit lens. Super sharp and has power zoom and VR/IS. Internal zoom to boot.
I have a 'fleet' of Nikons... I reach for my Z30 the most often for everyday use, for YT vids, for vlogging.

How is the battery life in it? Do you have a recommended lens? I use Z6 and 35mm 1.8 most of the time. But would like to go lighter if the image quality is on par with the Z6 35mm.

Now get a Zf and have full frame, Ibis, and improved AF. (Also grab a Megadap adapter for Sony and Sony mount Zeiss lenses.)
I'd love to see the Z-30 vs the pocket 3. I bought into the hype and may be regretting the Pocket 3. The image looks fine but there are autofocus issues when active track is not engaged. I uploaded a video comparing it with the ZVE 10 which has its own set of issues but I've taken for granted the Sony auto focus, what's not only is good but it just seems to know WHAT to focus on.

@@kllaskas810 Yes, stabilization is the main issue. The rolling shutter makes the edges warpy. You can use catalyst or a gimbal but those come with their own issues.
The pocket 3 is a little pointless if you want a full featured vlogging camera. It doesn’t have a zoom lens, it has a much smaller screen than the pocket3, and is not that ergonomic.
I love my Z30.

@@kllaskas810 The zoom lens is for framing other shots. ie, I am walking through the woods... or ... perhaps, a shot through some foliage, some creative shots too. You can't do that really with a fixed focal length. The Z30 is a good balance between weight and functionality for the price. Honestly, I couldn't tell the difference with Auto iso compared to the A7siii. But the weight and price, I could tell the difference, so I sold my A7siii.
Though, wanting to do doco film making, I wonder if the Z9 will cut it.
The fact it was light and fun is the exact reason I want to buy a second z30 😅

Impossible to see anything on that LCD in daylight.
@@USGrant21st the LCD has a brightness setting, looks fine to me on +5 even during ultra bright days when I use ND filters.

If you like Z30, Nikon Zf may be an even better camera for you. It has a retro design, but you can actually adjust most things the regular way, and it's got IBIS and 3D tracking AF which should be more reliable.
The price difference is too far
Zf is huge and heavy, and all that retro design only adds inconveniencies.

Z30 color science is amazing, both on the photography and videography side. Try mounting some e mount lenses on the z30, man, Megadap adapter is the key.
The content doesn’t matter. It’s all about using the latest, most expensive gear.

The main reason I keep coming back to Nikon is the colors and ergonomics! I want to give the S5ii a try but the others no thanks. Sterile Sony colors suck. Canon feels like a plastic toy. Fuji I still love but the Nikon beats them in every way. Even tried a Leica Q2 and didn't get what the hoopla was about. Nikon is where it's at! Z8 is a beast (in size and awesomeness)
Have you bought z8? I'm gonna buy it but I have been getting so much about cannons color being better but I've always used nikon and I've loved it also feel the same cannon feels like it's gonna break on first drop lol
I only wanted the S5IIX IBIS in a Nikon. It would be the perfect camera for me. The Nikon IBIS and EIS are not good enough for handheld video
@@joe2guns I love my z8! It's an amazing camera. AF is insane. Nikon colors in my opinion are the best there is. I've shot two weddings with the z8 and it's definitely my go to now.

Oh man this was my exact coin flip choice I made a couple months ago, I went with the R8 because I figure it's the price and weight of an XS-20 but full frame. However, after purchasing it I immediately wish I got the z30 at half the price. This hurts me. 😂
The z30 is wayyy better than I expected. It needs maybe a little less sharpening and contrast still, but it's nicer in general. Canon looks a little toasty. I'd probably stick it in Landscape or Fine Detail to preserve the blues.
I wanted to get into another camera system and you have been swaying me so hard towards the Nikon z30. It's either that or the Canon R50 (it's got 10 bit video which is cool, at only like 650usd for the body), but I kind of want the Z30 more for the quality. Autofocus seems super solid as well!
OK, Nikon settings: I always shoot Raw+Jpeg on my Z7ii and I only use standard profile for the jpeg. Raw to the CFexpress, Jpeg to the sdcard. For 3D printing; If you get one of the latest generation printers from Bambu Labs either one of the P1 (lower tier) or X1 (higher tier) you will be able to print without all the hassle of the printers that have been available up until recently. Bed leveling is automatic. Bambu Labs also has an add-on that lets you print with up to 4 spools of filament simultaneously so you can make things in up to 4 colors. Nikon processing is one of the best, I did prefer the way your face looks on the R8 tho in the side by side.
Finally you are coming around. You should try editing and creating custom profiles.
I am so happy you got an R8. I got one and the damn thing looses me all the time filming cooking segments. I can’t figure out the settings for autofocus to have it just focus on me and ignore my hands doing stuff.
I'm not at all interested in ANY of the cameras you're talking about but I'm still watching. It's just a glorious rant without ever sounding like a rant... ♥
The Nikon colors are gorgeous
the hard part of 3D printing is you have to learn drawing in CAD software. Every CAD is its own thing, unlike adobe, and takes forever to learn how THEY want you to approach a 3D drawing. apart from the huge price differences 0-40'000.- USD not all software lets you do many "undo" steps or separate parts after they are fused together. But this is only if you buy a finished printer. If you buy a cheap "build it yourself" one, you'll have to also tweak the printer AND software to get to acceptable results. So a typical workflow is, you have to imagine a 3D part or draw it roughly, then Draw it in CAD, making sure it is printable (can't print horizontal bridges in air) then import it into the 3D print software called slicer and make sure the hot plastic sausages get extruded the way you want, then prepare the printer for the chosen type of plastic and print layer by layer while the machine makes its motorized robot melody for a few hours (noise). Fascinating but very involved. It's a hobby on it's own.

Recently I discovered a UA-cam photography channel Courtney Victoria. As I was watching a few of her videos I was realizing how nice everything looked in her videos...and she was using the z30.

No, that's the Zeiss 50mm T1.4.
There is no better endorsement than buying a camera with your own money. Nikon was smart to always exposed for the face in standard profile.
Z30 is great. I use it with active d lighting and a gimbal.
Active D lighting - the secret that everyone knows about (or should), but very few use to their advantage. It is literally one of Nikon's super powers for aiding the photographer/videographer in getting a great result SOOC.

You ought to try out the R8 with the 16mm 2.8 prime. Figure the 14-35mm f4 might be to heavy for you.

I don't think I've seen a review on the Z30. I like it! For under $700 with a kit lens I think it's a great vlogger.
I've been using the R8 for about 6 months and have to say I love it, do yourself a favor and invest in the Meike EF-R adapter with the interchangeable variable ND option built-in, it works awesome and frees up the front of your lenses for glimmery goodness!

Paired with a Nikon 10-20 lens and the FTZ adapter, the Z30 has worked well in my arsenal for Real Estate Photography. 20.9M has proven to be more than enough for MLS listed images.
Love the Nikon Z30 footage. Stabe is a bit jerky though.

Just bought the z30 and use the z8 as my main work camera, Nikon’s are great!!
i think for nikon better color, auto wb - 1.5 yellow and + 0.5 mangeta and - 1 sat, -1 contrast + profile flat. I also notice your video less yellow than the least video z30

Other than the shaky [digital stabe], the Z30 looks surprisingly good. Way better than the X3000 for sure. Sorry, Canon cameras still don't have face-priority metering. That's their main flaw. The R8's digital stabe is OK, IMO. AF is much better than the R's, but obviously not on that lens. You should borrow or rent the 100-400 for some wildlife video. (I would suggest the 100-500 but I know they won't lend that to you.) Animal eye AF in video. Imagine that!
The Z30 doesn't have IBIS. It does have pretty aggressive digital IS though which has an elastic effect.
