    Despite Japanese being a grammatically simple language, the way how it is use is what makes it difficult. In the sentence “I have a very young sister” she is actually saying “ I have younger sister that is years away from me” and the Japanese structure is “I have a years away younger sister”. The mentality of the language is what I find sometimes difficult. But great video nonetheless! ありがと!

    When I learned Japanese (many years ago), I was taught to use non-honorific forms (母、父、兄、姉、弟、妹) for my own family members. I was surprised when I moved to Japan to find a lot of Japanese don't follow that rule. I even hear some men refer to their own wife as 奥さん, which always strikes me as strange since I learned to use 妻 only.

    • @donelle1231
      @donelle1231 7 років тому

      language when being taugh vs language when being spoken with by natives in a relax situation is always extremely different and there are little to no rules associated.

    • @kinpatu
      @kinpatu 7 років тому

      I disagree. Japanese is extremely adherent to rules, especially those involving honorifics (敬語). This is a rare exception.

    • @donelle1231
      @donelle1231 7 років тому

      We must talk to different native japanese people then. Half of what i learned in class were thrown out the door when i got thrown into Japan

    • @kinpatu
      @kinpatu 7 років тому

      No one says 妻 to call their wife. And talking about one's own wife using the term 奥さん is technically wrong but not uncommon. Some girls even add ちゃん to their own name in conversation with significant others, but I don't like it and most Japanese frown on it as well.

    • @kimeiga
      @kimeiga 7 років тому

      I remember reading an article by a Japanese native who was saying that it is more politically correct to use 妻, due to its more neutral roots. I'm not exactly sure which are used when speaking with ones wife versus speaking to others about ones wife.

    I do wish Risa would explain the grammar and vocabulary of the things she says, as without a proper explanation her videos are not nearly as useful as they could be. For instance:
    1. When Risa talks about having/not having an older brother/younger sister/cousins, etc, she keeps saying "watashi ni wa ..." WHY? Why not just say "watashi wa ..." Why does she add 'ni'?
    2. Why does she say "takusan no itoko"? Why isn't "takusan itoko" sufficient?
    3. When talking about her niece she uses the 'kute' form of kawaii - ie. 'kawaikute'. WHY? I thought the 'kute' form was used to string several adjectives together, but this is not the case here.

    • @nijimasu1
      @nijimasu1 5 років тому +3

      Good lord- that would take a long time... try and get the larger points the lesson is based on. the fine parts of regular speech you reference are for a more academic study of the language (you've already identified your queries- no go find you answers)... but truthfully, those are the points you will get a grip on with repetitive exposure to the language. For example, when you get the real feel of に and は as particles.. it will be the most natural thing to combine the two as in your first note. good luck!

    • @Carlos-pn8im
      @Carlos-pn8im 7 років тому +1

      There are many ways to say that. Do you want to be polite or not. I'll suggest saying the name instead of he. For example, "(Name) said that I'm cute). In Japanese, that would be "(Name) は私が可愛いだと言いました". (Name wa watashiga kawaii da to iimashita). However, if you've been talking about that person for some time, remove the name and say "Watashi ha kawaii da to iimashita". But to simply answers your question, say "彼は私が可愛いだと言いました". (Kare wa watashi ga kawaii da to iimashita).HOPE THIS HELPS!(^^)
