I think that it speaks for itself that i knew who were talking about as soon as I heard the first chord.
Also I think that it is due to the mixture of Keith's open tuning riffs and Mick's standard tuning licks that makes the late 60's/ early 70's Stones' sound as outstanding as it is (not to mention their sheer virtuosity).

The roads that lead to learning open tunings. Mine was when I first started to learn bottleneck slide. Maybe 25 years ago I was in the front row of an intimate club setting and sitting about three feet away from delta blues sensation Roy Rogers (not the singing cowboy). After the show, I snuck backstage and started a conversation with Roy. He was ok with me being back there. I ended up getting a 20 minute primer lesson on the basics of slide playing and open tunings. As to my player that I avoided learning his work, that would be Gary Moore.

    I just subscribed, Robert -- congratulations!😎
I've avoided Edward Van Halen's stuff for decades, and I still do! I started playing years before I heard of him, and even before he became famous. This was back in the days before many musical resources became available, and the main way to learn stuff was to buy albums. I was too broke to buy many albums! Also, I started playing before anyone was shredding, and my father had cautioned me that I probably wouldn't have the fastest hands in the world to work with -- and then we were besieged with widdly-widdly shredders by the seeming dozen, and it all seemed so far beyond me! By the time much of that stuff was readily available, I was pretty much too old to mess with it. Having guitars that were poorly set up and having too little knowledge of how it was done didn't help either.
All that said, no, I can't shred or do any of that flashy stuff ... but I can still sound good when I play. That's what's really up. And I HAVE had one guy at my local Guitar Center tell me I was playing "hot licks" when I got warmed up and really did my thing. Not bad for 61 years old (although I was just 60 then).😎

@@Iheartdgd Wow man that sounds like my story except I started playing dec 1986 and VH ( besides the Dave gone Hagar in debacle, ) They were the biggest band on the planet and of course Ed was the measuring stick. I just didn't get it, I didn't have youtube so no one showing how to play anything. The good thing was Metallica was about to blow up and when I heard that kind aggression behind a guitar I was sold. Seek and Destroy the outro guitars with the sludgy speed but being picked double time set the standard. As this was some 32-33 years ago It was Live After Death and Master of Puppets that I chose to practice at least 1million times since then till now. Along with Megadeth,Testament,Machine Head and so many more. My point is like you said taking the thrash and mixing in the shear timing brilliance of EVH and everything he brings made a better player period. I'll admit the wholeheartedly. I still laugh when Im practising songs and my list goes , Sanitarium,Holy Wars,Somebody get me a doctor,Hitch a Ride,Lay it Down,Tornado of Souls,Shortest Straw,Black and Blue,Wanted Dead or Alive,Seventeen. Yeah I Play Winger too.( For any haters play 17 like Reb Beach does and say they suck,) Thats just a small part. I usually like to play around 40 songs daily. Its given me a fingerprint to be proud of cause My sound is my own, borrowed from so many of my favorites over years. The best part of it all is I'm playing the best I ever have and its my main job now.

I liked all the 'bad' notes at the end. Yeah, the list of guitar player riffs that I didn't want to learn was/is way longer than the list of riffs I wanted to learn. One of the reasons I never wanted to cover in a band in a bar down the street was I didn't want to play all the stuff I didn't like. When I was in my earliest days as a guitar player, late seventies, I thought the Stones were corny old stuff and I wanted heavier stuff. As I got older I started to like the stones.
Open tunings and alt tunings are great. I love messing with them and it's so easy to make up original material because so many guitar players avoid using them. Lately I've been thinking of tuning strings 3 through 6 flat and leaving 1&2 in standard; E B G

that was cool. I once saw a picture of Keith Richards and noticed he plays with just 5 strings. It's really weird.

Well the other E string is basically useless in open G tuning. So he just took it off to avoid hitting it

People normally take off the low E if they're playing open G and just use the high E if they take any strings off at all. I don't personally lol

Grew up in 70’s 80’s and was not a stones fan. Love them now and probably why I bought a tele at this stage in my life. I don’t think most people had high fi systems to hear the Stone as intended. Now days I love them. Tele’s are great. Tele and plate reverb.

Diamond Darrell, aka Dimebag. I love PanterA like a brother I never had. I knew I could never do the stuff he did, but then later realized I couldn't do any of the stuff he did outside of a few measures of "Walk" or "A New Level" So I felt compelled to try and do any, the essentials as one of my buddies suggested. Dude in my college dorm (before I began playing) drove me to the brink of insanity by only playing Brown Sugar over and over and over. Took me 30 years to get past that. Honestly Brown Sugar is a perfect song on both guitar and bass, and both are insanely fun to play. Keef and the boys stole from the best, but are genius in their own right.

The flip flop of that kinda happened to me when I started. Three years ago I started playing when Prince died and I wanted to learn his stuff but it is some tough stuff. So I learned others like Lenny Kravitz to get started and Alice in Chains got me into Alternate tunings, still working on Prince stuff all standard tuning.

I play a lot of his licks without re-tuning. I just strike the D, G, and B strings and mute the rest. It's not as good as re-tuning but it does get the job done.

"Upload your own video" LOL loved that line Robert!
I was never much into the Stones, but I as I get older I do think I like their music better than when I was younger. I watched a Bio on Keith Richards and I came away from it actually really liking the guy! He was recording a solo album at the time and they kept zooming in on his hands, those old gnarled up, swollen knuckles may look horrible but the man was still playing like he was 17 and I was impressed!
I like the old KISS stuff, the original first three albums, but every song they had their guitars tuned down a half step, that annoys me when I am going through and trying to learn new songs and find one I really like and the tuning is not standard. Lol I guess I am just being lazy and don't want to mess with the tuners. Since so many of those old classic songs were tuned to Eb I have my Iceman guitar always tuned to Eb, lol it saves me time. I figured I would keep my Iceman at that setting since Paul Stanley of KISS is one of the biggest reasons for the popularity of that guitar. I did not know that it was him that pretty much designed the Iceman guitar. Apparently when KISS was on tour in Japan reps from Ibanez approached him and showed him a guitar they were designing and asked for his input and then asked if he wanted to play it on stage as an endorsement for it. Back in those days I remember all the guitar guys talking about that cool guitar Paul Stanley was playing, even non KISS fans loved it! It's the best guitar I have found for sitting and playing, it is so well balanced and comfortable!

I now have EVH flair to my Mustaine thunderous sound that has really put a stamp on my own sound. Well said not too hard and really fun,but I have to say 25 years ago I didnt have a chance. Over that span I picked up the playing prowess to step up to the plate and do it. Peace
