I always get so excited when Rick Beato makes a video about "basics" -- and so bitterly disappointed when I spend the entire video wondering wtf he's talking about.
This "shift this shape around to get the different modes" was precisely what I needed.
Yeah, I had a fairly technical teacher for only a very short time. I know very little as a result. Just learned a few things in this video. Now sure he is glossing over many things, but in the beginning, that is what you need, some basics to get you going.

I’ve played guitar for 11 years without any lessons. I’ve always played by ear and with what felt comfortable. Having the theory explained so carefully and easily by Rob is a massive help. Everything seems so much simpler now

@@funkfan1751 As much of a tool that he came across has, FB does have a point. 11 years is a long time to not take the time to go out and find a book or video on very basic things. I get that guitar is fun but if you truly love it then you'd probably dig out a book or three dozen and figure out the theory behind what does what. As Yngwie used to say, learning scales is like "eating your greens." It's not fun but once you learn them, which isn't hard then you're about an hour away from knowing all your different modes and how to constuct chords.

I don't think I've ever seen these concepts described in such a demystifying and practical manner before. Just the right level of theory. Possibly could be a very empowering lesson for beginner/intermediate players.

@@spook6473 Haven't had much time to practice sadly due to familial problems, I half learned several songs but never had the real time to sit down and actually learn over the course of months.
Seriously, I learned more in the first 6 minutes of this video than I had practically understood about scales from all other presentations I've seen. Thank you!!!

This has truly blown my mind. I'd always felt overwhelmed and confused by tutorials on scales however you have just made something click in my head. Bravo Sir. Thank you.
This is one of those lessons that brings the pieces of the puzzle together.
I have been playing guitar for decades, literally, and stumbling around like a blind man when it comes to creating a solo. I'm like the guy that types with one finger of each hand knowing he should learn some keyboard skills.
Yes I could eventually come up with some cools stuff but I had no way of knowing how I got there...it was totally trial with much error and then struggling to remember what it was I found with no way to apply it to other songs...each time it was start from scratch all over again.
I knew I needed to learn some theory but it just never worked for me.
A couple days ago I watched this video and now I can't avoid using the things I learned in this lesson! It is remarkable because I feel like I have a cheat code to exploring and creating melody!! Only, unlike getting a cheat code in a video game which invariably ruins the game for me, this new knowledge you have given me has done the opposite for me with regards to music....I am now unbroken for the first time!!
Armed with this new knowledge this morning I found myself taking that third pattern and transposing it to start on the A string, 5th fret, because I was going to play over something in D that was starting there and didn't want to start way up at the tenth fret. So I figured 'D is D...thats the root so learn damn it!'
So I found it works just fine and that's when it all seemed to be so clear for a change. I now have a reference for anything I do or hear...find the root and I'm off and running.....this is SO FUN!
So thank you and well done Mr. Chapman! I am eternally grateful for your spirit and enthusiasm that drives you to offer up such a resource that opened up this path for me that I so wanted to explore for so long. I hope you get all from music that you seek and you continue to help pioneer the musical territories of the internet because you earn it.

I am replying to you without having watched this entire video because I have been in the same position as you, fiddling with my guitar for 20 years and reaching nowhere when it comes to soloing. I liked the analogy you drew between typing with one hand and mastering the fret board.

Classic Chappers - a goldmine of potential presented in such a way as to make people confident they can tackle it.
This is a great lesson. I'm a 40 year player and I still took away fresh perspectives on moving the scale shapes.
Same here 48 year bass player.Very useful.I do these scales naturally but to see them gives you a different perspective.As others have said you do not need to be Jimmy Hendrix to teach music,its up to the student [if he is talented]to take it farther.

He did such an excellent job of explaining this. One of the best lessons I've seen. I spent a long time in the late seventies/early eighties beating my way through this stuff with books, mags and so on. He's making the process painless here.

Using the same three-note-per-string pattern to represent the seven modes - mind blown 🤯 - I learned it as seven different patterns, then I learned the Segovia scales and the CAGED patterns. It’s all finally coming together now - Thank you Chappers !! 🙏

Initially I thought a friend of mine had been replaced by alien pod-people 🥜. Instead, I learned he had been studying your video.
He's suddenly playing scales, picking out melodies from recordings, attempting to bend notes. And then he played something more sophisticated sounding ... he said it was a "Dorian" scale. Pod person 👽!
My point... this video helped to unlock a whole new musical dynamic for a self-described strummer. For years, I've offered to help with scales, visualization and improvising. After studying your video, he finally told me he had been too "embarrassed"(???) to ask for help.
He always thought he would have figured it out on his own (by now). He honestly believed you had to be "gifted" in some way to learn this stuff. Nothing ever clicked for him.
Long story short. You've either demystified some key concepts for lots of folks here or you're the alien pod-people overlord. Thanks either way!
My friend is turning 70 this year. Life's too short to let embarrassment get in the way of your goals and it's never too late to learn something new.
So now he's all energized about music theory and more annoying.... "How do you know it's a relative minor? It's always asking for money."

There are so many scale teaching videos that really come across as nonsense to a beginner. As a person that is just starting to get a feel for the notes on the fretboard, this vid is the first that has ever made a bit of sense to me. Thanks.

I got some Hal Leonard book and an acoustic for Christmas when I was 12. . No idea how to tune the damn thing. Book didn't translate too well once my guitar went out of tune, and I didn't pick it up again until I was 18.

Every guitarist has his own style of playing, which makes each of us who play special. It took me about thirty-five years of playing to take on my style. These are mostly guitarists who play for a long time.Rob can be seen playing very well, but his lessons are good for those people who play short. They are more for beginners

Lots of people plays the guitar well... but being a good musician don't always translate into being a good instructor... just as all good soccer players won't always turn out to be good coachers.
You explain things so easily, with no techinal frills & wizardry...
yet in a way that makes it easy to understand...

I've been stumbling about for the last 30 years using the Pentatonic and bits of the Dorian not knowing what I was doing or how to really use it (didn't even know it was called the Dorian).
This has been the single best guitar lesson I have ever seen.
Shit dude, it just makes sense now. My mind is blown, I'm feeling a little dizzy and light headed thinking about the potential it has opened up for me.

@@GuitarsAndSynths My teacher won't teach this stuff unless I ask and then only in small quantities which left me having to know what to ask on my own. I've done better on my own charting out the circle of 5ths and developing a basic mode/root note chart but you need to know the major scale backward and forward for that to work. Lucky for me :))
The most important part of this lesson is his emphasis on the immediate application of information so that you're actually practicing playing. Well done.

Am currently playing lead guitar in a band and this definitely helps me find new ways to write solos. Seriously, how couldn't other guitar teachers teach this?
if your a lead guitarist you should have learnt the pentatonic scale as soon as you started. its not suppose to be the only scale you use aswell, you gotta use other scales. learn the diminished scale and the byzantine scale then you have way more ways of soloing.
@@sirspongadoodle cool. 2 years later, ive enhanced my blues playing to a point i feel confident with it, and now im enjoying learning dorian, phrygian, and lydian legato and arpeggios, kinda like the stuff you see done by the fusion guys. the band doesnt exist anymore either 😂😂 as do most high school bands when some people in it want to pursue music seriously and others dont. guess time is nigh to just keep sitting down to practice and write. cheers
