William MacAskill is an Associate Professor in Philosophy and Research Fellow at the Global Priorities Institute, University of Oxford. He is one of the primary voices in a philanthropic movement known as “effective altruism” and the co-founder of three non-profits based on effective altruist principles: Giving What We Can, 80,000 Hours, and the Centre for Effective Altruism. He is also the Director of the Forethought Foundation for Global Priorities Research and the author of Doing Good Better: Effective Altruism and a Radical New Way to Make a Difference.

I would encourage you to think deeply, beyond your own political stance, on how disgusting what you said truly was and what Mr. Hitchens would say to you about that. I’ve followed him since he rose to fame following his appearance on Bill Maher, where he schooled Ben Affleck. I’ve been a subscriber since, and I’ve watched his series with JP several times. I’ve lost all respect for him now, if election integrity, democracy, truth, justice and the American way of life means nothing to him, then he means nothing to me. Some people may stick with him, and that’s fine, but I’ve unsubscribed.

Modern life is strange. The entire global economy is founded upon a gamble that tomorrow more money and-or resources will be available, but if you mention future generations or sustainability, nah, too flimsy.
Money is a tool for comerce, so long as the regulators dont f it up it will be good. Resources and scarcity can always be overcome by man's endless ingenuity. If not we just make do with less. When the church folk get together to decide what to canonize and what to exclude, there is a risk of getting it wrong and having to revise. Atheists go through the same process when defining what is ethical. Both atheists and religious people use the same tools such as logic and science. The difference is (assuming an earnest pursuit of truth) that the religious person is more likely aware of their fallibility and possibility of getting it wrong and are humble enough to pray that their thinking and decisions are logical and worthy. Embodying such work in God is a safeguard which is not easily corrupted by worldly circumstances. The answer to such questions as kill one person to save 5 can not be generalized or canonized. Each situation is unique and it would be arrogant to think we know the consequences. Sam’s justification to lie to the people because he thought he knows the consequences was perhaps arrogant.
