Same age here. I had one bike but when I moved to Alaska in my 20s Ive had many ATVs and snowmachines and worked on them all. My son has worked in the business for 25 years. Now we have a side by side and wide track snowmachine.
I’m 53 and like turning wrenches on my ATV, bikes and sleds. I learn a lot from Joe about different units but also things Id need to research my own otherwise. I love that Joe is just down to business and isn’t afraid to dig into any issue.
You have something jacked up in the transmission, sounds like a broken main drive gear or something. Love your videos, Joe, you aren't afraid to jump right in and troubleshoot an issue, and solve it. Thanks man!
These things are so over priced it's insane. In 1977, I bought a new Dodge Ramcharger 4x4 with a 440ci engine for $5,400.00. Yes, I know I'm an old guy but..........really?...........$15,000 for a UTV?
Joe, I think your spot on about the broken trailer hitch. I’ll bet the previous owner towed something way too heavy broke the hitch and screwed up the drive train. Good luck….. With only 800 miles it was more than likely owner abuse!
I can tell you from past experience with CVT drives that you’re going to find your problem in the drive clutch. Your primary off the crank is fine, the transmission clutch looks like it’s boogered.
Busted gears in the rear end or gearbox? Motor sounds ok, it’s like there’s a gear missing a few teeth and it’s jerking as it’s going past the bad spot.
I couldn’t do the UTV’s after about age 30 I was done with being a mechanic and went into HVAC. Auto mechanic is much more taxing on the body. The dirt bikes and 2 wheel older street bikes I can do, but no cars, quads, or UTV unless it’s just brakes or lights or something. I am 55 and my joints and everything are rough. You’re a one man wrecking machine man. You would have made a hell of a soldier-mechanic!
No way is a mechanic more taxing on the body than HVAC. You're talking to a professional licensed one with well over 20 years experience BTW. Extreme temps, heights, crawlspaces, heavy lifting, on your knees and chest etc etc. There's no "garage" job as bad as a 130+ degree attic in the summer. Likewise for climbing up a ladder on a roof in the middle of winter or during a rainstorm. What about crawlspaces and crawling around on your stomach through dirt, rocks, broken glass, raw sewage, raccoons, possums, snakes etc etc. Working in bad neighborhoods, getting cut constantly, tearing your clothes to shreds, 24 hour on call etc etc. You ain't fooling nobody...... You might as well try out for DEVGRU (ST6) or 1st SFOD-D Delta Force.
I can totally appreciate what you are saying . I'm learning something every day when I put my feet up after yet another physically and mentally stressful shift . Kudos to Joe for his knowledge and resilience . Cheers from Christiano the Sampler in Australia .

It kinda sounds like the pin that holds the spider gear in place on the differential snapped. Caused by maybe something like, trying to jerk a stump out. Which could also tear off that rear hitch. We know you'll figure it out whatever the cause, that's why I watch. Keep up the good work.
That rear diff oil looks smoked, brother. Usually that gray color is actually fine metal dust. Could just be some wear from getting slammed around so much. Also wanted to note, when you spin the wheel and the other wheel spins the opposite direction that indicates you have an open diff. If they spin the same way you have either a limited slip or a locking diff. Keep up the good work dude!
Did you really think Joe that you could get a 15k machine from a Dealer for 3k and you wouldn't have to pull the engine? Seems like a trend. Thanks for letting us hang out in your shop today.
I'm really happy that you got the lift to remove the engines, my back would hurt just watching you lift those heavy chunks of metal. Forty years from now your back will be glad you got yourself a hoist lift. Now if you could get you a hydraulic lift table to lift and lower the bikes while you're working on them it would really make your job easier.
They are toys for people with more money than brains. Sucks because they are extremely useful machines but only a small number of people actually need them. I live in Alaska and have a 2005 Yamaha Rhino 660. They don't even bother selling Chinese machines like the one in this video here.
Given the condition you pointed out of the rear hitch and your suspicion on the transmission looks like an accurate call. When towing or winching the transmission is the one area that needs caution the most. You made pulling that engine look pretty seamless. Good video.
I know that you ain't going to give up no matter what. My newest hobby is watching your diagnosis and repairing these machines that most give up on, even the dealerships. Looking forward to you getting this one all fixed up. Can't wait to see the guts in the transmission.
You learn and you teach everyone else. I love your projects and how you approach each with professional diagnostic techniques. I really enjoy watching your videos and it has helped me several times trying to figure out what is going on with my own toys. I have always wondered what you do with the items you have fixed? If you are selling them where are you listing them?
Ya know Joe, I’m not sure dealership service departments have real mechanics anymore. I think they do have “parts changers”, but true mechanics that can diagnose, fix and repair, probably few and far between as most of the younger generation cannot change their own oil or inflate a tire…
It's the same all over the western world except in Pakistan Russia and the like but you joe are an exception, such a pleasure to watch your vids love and peace from Ireland
There is something to be said for dealer mechanics who get to know the ins and outs, and quirks, of their lineup of units. I think the largest problem is, most good mechanics realize they can go into business for themselves….especially with powersports units where the barriers to entry are still low.
I think whoever owned this flogged the guts out of it that diff oil looked like silver paint with all those shavings in there ,I’d be checking it out to Joe most definitely get your oil pan put some diesel in it and old paint brush and clean those components thoroughly hose them off get all that residue out of there Joe all will be sweet ✌️✌️☮️
@@anthonyg4671 why would you put a material in the diff to wear it out, Which makes complete sense if you’re wanting to get a repair job from a dealership 👍

2 things, 1 I can't believe life for you before you got that engine puller, what a buy.. those things are great to have in the shop if you're doing ANY engine work.. and 2 man when you were driving this thing it sounded like it was just jamming between whatever gears it could jam through, and now with it taken apart-ish and you turning the shaft out the back, yeah.. that thing is a slaughterhouse in there.. yikes I can't wait to see what it looks like in there next video!!
I called it as a grenaded transmission the second I saw it jumping and skipping the tires in the earlier part of the video….. Granted I dunno how to fix cars/a-utvs or transmissions of any sort but after driving a tow truck for over a decade, I like to think I have an idea what a problem could be lol. Hopefully it comes apart and goes together easy for ya. I have to admit I’m kinda jealous, you get all these cool toys and usually for decent prices cause they’re screwed up, but you’re like rainman ray but for atv/utv’s it seems lol. If I bought something cause it’s screwed up I’d prolly spend more money to get it fixed more cause I’d probably try to do it and fail, myself lmao.
Not bad. Looks like you're on the right track with the hitch being broken off. Looks like the old owner thrashed on it trying to haul something too heavy or hard to pull. You can't treat these like a pickup truck and beat on the drive train. It's not meant for that type of work.
My first thought was the engine has a governor, and this isn't working correctly. For example, when you put the vehicle into gear the governor thinks the revs are too high, so it cuts the power to the engine, but then it thinks the revs are too low, and so it applies more power to the engine, hence the bunny hops when it was in gear. When I saw the spark plugs were fouled, it made me wonder if there was some sort of problem with the fuel, e.g. someone might have put diesel into the tank. This might also cause the governor to behave as though it was incorrectly adjusted. I recommend you test the engine with fresh fuel from the service station. Also, replace the air filter. I don't think that would cause the bunny hopping, but it might do. A point about the differential is if, when the engine is off and both wheels off the ground, put the vehicle into gear; then when you spin one wheel the opposite wheel should spin at the same speed but in the opposite direction.
Good job on the videos, they're very entertaining and informative. Can you tell me what you do with the vehicles you fix? It appears that you buy something different every few days and that can get very expensive and hard to store.
Watching your channel for awhile now and I am a machinist by trade but also a mechanic. Just wondering how the hell you remember where all the bolts go back perhaps different lengths.
It's most likely the Drive bevel gear #71769 & the Driven bevel gear #73769. Very common issue on these things with the linhai motor. The Hisun motor had issue with the middle drive gear when Massimo used their motors. Not including the wet clutch set up with the 1 way bearing always failing. My other youtube channel has a ton of Hisun repairs. Have had may hands in to many of the Linhai ones as they seem to be a little bit better motor.
Hi Joe great video. good to see engine coming out of it. Can I suggest that you take off the long thin back plate from the rear of the back rest, as it looks like a tight fit, for you to put back in.
They stripped the splines off of the end of the driveshaft going in the trans I think. And I'd bet money they done it at the same time that they tore the hitch off. I originally thought maybe the belt was stretched but that assumption was wrong lol.
oh man...I thought it would be fixed today...your videos are like Dragon Ball, we have to wait for the next day to see news. just kidding, keep the work and looking forward to see the part 2.
"Of course, it's in the engine" said so mater of factly I spat my cup of tea everywhere, a good cynical sense of humour emerging Joe, great content as usual .😂
I only have $3200 in My daily driver 04 jeep liberty and that includes the engine i put in it this spring and new set of tires. People spend $15k *well they get a loan for those stupid toy's then complain about being broke and/or work extra to finance the stupidity. When i think of the projects i could do for lots less, it makes me chuckle everytime i see a utv.
I’m only part way through the video but it is definitely a drive train issue, not the motor. Just a wild guess but I would say he was pulling something heavy and either hit a big bump or some kind of obstruction on the road and it made the rear of the machine bounce up. When it came back down all of that weight on the hitch caused way too much stress on the diff of tranny and also ripped the hitch off as well.
Wunderbar dir zuzusehen. Ich habe große Freude dabei . Ich war mir am Anfang sehr sicher, dass das Differential kaputt ist. So kann man sich irren. Freue mich auf Teil 2.
Maybe if your going to be working on so many 4 wheelers and ATV 's you may be better if you get yourself a lift of some kind, I found that after a while you'll feel really tired on crawling around on the garage floor, yeah it's fine now ! What you said about the hitch being broken off, is leading to transmission problem, they overload its capacity.
I really enjoy watching your videos and it has helped me several times trying to figure out what is going on with my own toys. I have always wondered what you do with the items you have fixed? If you are selling them where are you listing them?
The rear end, transfer case, pumpkin, or transmission tooth may be broken. they must have pulled a semi dump truck with it.
Ya know Joe, I’m not sure dealership service departments have real mechanics anymore. I think they do have “parts changers”, but true mechanics that can diagnose, fix and repair, probably few and far between as most of the younger generation cannot change their own oil or inflate a tire…
100% agree. I know for a fact my local yamaha shop just throws parts at machines blindly and sometimes get lucky enough to fix the actual problem
That oil probably contains graphite that’s why it’s grey.
@@anthonyg4671 why would you put a material in the diff to wear it out,
Which makes complete sense if you’re wanting to get a repair job from a dealership 👍
@@petershute3580 graphite is used in heavy machinery has a lubricant,so I just put 2+2 together and got to 5 ,it was just a thought 🙃
@@anthonyg4671 yeah on components like diffs or motors gearboxes you don’t use wear materials like graphite it counterproductive ✌️☮️🇦🇺
@@petershute3580 👍
Trust you checked the oil level before the engine was started. Not clear if you did so. Great channel.
Nobody gave $15000 for a mossimoto. I wouldn't give $3000 for that thing in good condition. 😅
Everybody is stupid and it's simple payments. So this one has half the payment of an actual name brand. But seriously, you're right. I think these morons walk into these little small dealerships and they convince them that this is an actual brand and not just a Chinese relabeled turdsicle.
WalMart sells the slightly larger 1000 for $17,999.00
Someone obviously bought it new goofball.
Always very interesting to see you take those engine apart and rebuild again you must have vast experience with them .Great videos keep up the good work
The cylinder looks great now until all that dirt falls into it when you put it back together? You really are amazing figuring all these motors out. Just all the dirt would scare me.
Looks like a really great one, loads of specs and easy to work on. Let's hope that it doesn't cost a load to fix it. When I first saw the jerk and heard the noise I thought it was going to be the diff. Looking forward to seeing what stripped. 👍

Not an easy job, but persevere & hopefully it can be fixed without too much fuss & expense.
I took apart a new Ural engine after 3,000 miles and inside the engine I scooped out a handful of swarf ..But afterwards it ran for 5 years .
Transmision /clutch motor sounds okay
The double washers on the head bolts was weird, I’ve never seen that before. I wonder what the reasoning was behind that?
Best money you’ve ever spent at harbor freight. I see it’s been getting some use.
Nice ! Will be awesome to see if you can get it running ! ❤
Not bad. Looks like you're on the right track with the hitch being broken off. Looks like the old owner thrashed on it trying to haul something too heavy or hard to pull. You can't treat these like a pickup truck and beat on the drive train. It's not meant for that type of work.
Drive to whitby ontario . And thin out my hoard of 72 vintage bikes
Looks like that Trailer hitch was ripped out or my eyes playing tricks on me. I just started watching your video.
I think it was stuck in the mud/snow and smoked gears before getting yanked outta the hole . Thus, rippin the hitch off in the process.
I just bought one of those for $3000 myself with the exact same problem. Your video is very helpful. I'm wondering if Yamaha 660 gears fit.
They don't....lol
Good job on the videos, they're very entertaining and informative. Can you tell me what you do with the vehicles you fix? It appears that you buy something different every few days and that can get very expensive and hard to store.
Your turf gear is gone which unfortunately controls the transmission.
Watching your channel for awhile now and I am a machinist by trade but also a mechanic. Just wondering how the hell you remember where all the bolts go back perhaps different lengths.
That diff looks wrong also never seen silver oil only when it’s full of ground aluminium. Great videos and some really interesting projects 👍
Man I love these sxs and atv content. Always a good day when Joe post!
It’s funny, when you have no idea what to do next, you check to see if the headlights and turn signals work. Hilarious.
It has a transmission noise so he checks the air filter. Lol
Easing his way into the job
Use a clear food container to check oil
8 minutes in and my guess is the rear axle? Since the hitch was broken off, kinda makes sense?
You should mark the clocking of the drive shaft to the trans and the diff
Not doing so could mean an unbalanced drive line
Would that have sent them through the windshield maybe?
Hi try to turn the rear by hand on the air to see if
oh man...I thought it would be fixed today...your videos are like Dragon Ball, we have to wait for the next day to see news. just kidding, keep the work and looking forward to see the part 2.
This dude is going to have to break down and get a big impact.....#milwaukee he can't get any nuts off
The trailer hitch broken off seems like he was trying to tow something and stripped the gears in the trans seen this happen before
Loved seeing the new engine picker save that back great video and good camera work as always can't wait for the next video
Grand riseing joe i have throttle and brown honda dream grips with the chrome gaurds mirrors and mint rear rack for around seat
Wunderbar dir zuzusehen. Ich habe große Freude dabei .
Ich war mir am Anfang sehr sicher, dass das Differential kaputt ist. So kann man sich irren. Freue mich auf Teil 2.
Gm i always find it better to put nuts and bolts into a container for safety
I wish I had the enthusiasm to do this stuff these days.
Maybe if your going to be working on so many 4 wheelers and ATV 's you may be better if you get yourself a lift of some kind, I found that after a while you'll feel really tired on crawling around on the garage floor, yeah it's fine now ! Give it time tho and your knees will be as bad as all us older guys.😊
Ring and Pinion
Sounds or looks like a trans of diff issue the engine sounds fine at idle.
He never gets frustrated, at least not on camera. LOL
Engine sounds good. The problem is in the drivetrain.
Why would they colour diff oil to look like silver paint? Aka oil full of metal.
