You go into so much detail on every video. I think you are an absolute star sir. You've helped me no end and that is as a painter. I take on the occasional wall or ceiling now thanks to you. Not as efficient as a plasterer, but financially it helps my customers. You're amazing
Thank you for your kind words mate! I really appreciate that - its great to hear feedback so cheers. And well done for your plastering!! You'll get better with each wall so keep it up. Thanks again for watching! You're a legend 👍
I am a beginner plasterer and after watching many of Blaine's very helpful videos, i just finished plastering a room, including the ceiling. I have a lot of experience on ceilings, as i repeated the attempt three times.☺. My overall difficulty with both ceiling and walls was not being fast enough to do a full wall before the plaster was drying. I divided a wall into thirds to do a third at a time, but this had its own difficulty: i would have to mix up 6 batches for the two coats of one wall. Another result of slowness was having to clean tools more often for one wall, as the plaster would be drying on them. Next time i do a room i will use that slowing agent, which gives you longer before the plaster dries. I am sure that this will give me the necessary time to manage the plaster. I also don't think it will slow me down because i would only have to mix two batches for the two coats and won't have the same problems of plaster drying on tools halfway through doing one wall. I also used a speed skim which was really useful for flatteniing the walls.
Hi mate. First of all, fair play to you! Sounds like you're giving it a good go. Speed is a massive problem at the beginning and it does come with time. And the situation of mixing 6 times is going to slow you down massively so use Extratime like you said. It will definately mate your life easier! But other than that, just keep doing it! You'll get better with time my friend. Well done! Keep up the good work! Thanks for sharing 👍
Hi Blaine Awesome tutorials! I have a house renovation on the go and having watched many of your videos i now understand the basics - obviously need practice. You deliver it well and for that i thank you!!
Love the videos, I'm a jointer by trade but currently learning to skim at college and your videos are always talked about amongst the students. The detail on each stage is fantastic, they're always easy to follow and keep me interested. It may be something you have done or have considered doing but you should definitely be in the college's teaching new generations of plasterers the right way of doing things. Keep the videos coming 😁😁
I'm a beginner- only ever plastered walls when needing filling or half a wall re-plastered...today I decided to give an Edwardian house a go. From 10am-6:30pm with a 15 minute break I only managed to prep a pre-wallpapered wall and plaster 1 x wall that was almost 3 metres high by 4 metres wide...very ambitious. I'm exhausted and didn't do the best on the edges but I'm going to try and fix this tomorrow as well as, the fact I had to plaster up-to skirting boards and so need cleaning that up. I have watched several of your videos which has helped me drastically today! I made a rookie mistake of leaving plaster on my trowel for quite some time (20 mins or not far off) and now have small dots which I believe are rust spots. Gutted as purchased a Nela and had purchased a protective cover in hope to keep it in good condition.
Loving how you arrived to the sisters, no tools, nip to the B&Q then get going with fresh out the box tools......and of all things in a pair of sandals. Top notch :)
I learnt plastering off UA-cam about 10 years ago but just coming back to it this was a nice refresher course. I learnt to use a plazi for a lot of the work and to wet the wall down with a fine mist sprayer. Neila superflex for final polishing stages. I’ve also got a longer refina hand blade for speedy flattening but it’s all the same. Many thanks.
Thanks Blain im a handyman in Sydney where we have a huge number of poorly built, (inadquate foundations) homes built in the 1900s. Untill recently ive gouged and filled then got a team of plasterers in. Thanks to your fantastic videos im finishing now and gaining confidance im so happy with the results. I love doing it. Just painted my repaired walls with a new wall job starting Wednesday. Your vids have helped my business thanks again mate.
Brilliant video mate yet again!! Also just wanted to say thank you for your tutorials. From watching your videos I have now taken a lot of plastering work for my maintenance business and it is all down to you and your videos giving me the confidence to do it. Just completed a garage to salon conversion boarding and plastered walls and ceiling and came out a treat. Just wanted say thanks. Top man.
Well done my friend! You should be proud of yourself...trying a new trade is scary so fair play!! Keep up the hard work and thank you for watching. I really appreciate it mate 👍
Blaine is the best at explaining the whole Process of plastering I have found, knows his stuff without being at all arrogant, top instructor who explains all in detail cheers mate you are the boss
Such a great video, thank you. You really are a natural teacher. I like that you do a quality job. I've been renovating a house and had a nightmare with shoddy plastering by various guys leaving dried plaster on windows, ripples etc and mess left everywhere for me to clean up afterwards. I'm sure your attention to detail is appreciated by discerning customers. xox 🍀
This is an excellent tutorial I'd never plastered before, but watching this I felt confident I could give it ago on an old wall, you make it clear and easy to follow. Top man
Thank you for your great tutorials. Also the tip about sanding the edges of a new trowel is invaluable. Yesterday it was frustrating me, today (with a sanded trowel) it's beautiful. 🎉
We use wallpaper scrapers to apply scrim as it stop adhesive getting on our trowels, also we stopped using pva on existing plastered walls because we found blue grit gives a far better key. Good work, keep it up.
Cheers for that mate applying for a plastering job tomorrow fingers crossed I’ll get it. They said I need two years experience but I recon I could pull it off
just plastered my first full wall thanks to your tips, wasted a bit because I mixed too much and it was going off on me on the 2nd coat, sweatin like a pig doin that 2nd coat too, but I got there, my timing was a bit off, i've got a bigger wall in the same room to tackle once i've plasterboarded it, your ace to watch and you've gotten me up doing it myself so thanks.
Well done my friend! Don’t worry about the waste - gauging the mix comes with time! You’ve taken the hardest step and it’ll only get easier from here. Well done. Keep it up 👍
Just finished watching - thx a lot. It was probably my first step, but so good. I also need to know how to plaster brick walls and also how to skim around windows after changing...
Been working for a plasterer for 7 months now and with blains in depth videos helps me tweak things done a hit from start to finish now next stage is 1st and 2nd hit that pretty much a hole room that could be interesting 😨
Just quick one Blaine I’ve decided to remove my wall paper in my flat do I remove the old plaster board or can I pva it or use something like bostik cementone primer the re plaster it?
I couldn't find any better explanation of how to plaster in youtube. You are a master plasterer. I tried to plaster as a DIY. Coz doing it occasionally so my wrist really hurts. 😂... Can you please name the affordable yet good tools for DIY plastering. Thanks again for your great videos.... Stay blessed..
Haveing watched your great video a couple of times I decided to try the undercoat stage and have surpised myself, it has given me confidence to compelete the job thaks for your input.
I'll have to agree up all the videos I've watched yours is one of the better ones very thorough in your descriptions I'm from the US even though we don't have the same product names I'm sure we have the same product
Top man exactly what I was looking for! Just bought a house that needs some TLC so will use your videos to freshen up the walls and make it look brand new! Cheers and thanks the the excellent videos! Bryn
Really great video! I’ve been watching these videos and done a couple of walls, which have turned out really good! I also used extra time to give myself longer. I had a plasterer in to do landing, hallway and stairs and he asked who did the other walls - when I said me - he couldn’t believe it and asked why I’d got him in!! I also used a speedskim to get it flatter and it seemed to work. One question- how long should I wait between coats 1 and flattening and same between 2 and flattening, wet trowelling etc… Thanks for the videos!
You're rocking the wrist guard too!! Smashed out one wall about 9 m2 and I wad fukked, had the wrist guard on the whole time. I tip my hat dude, its graft!!
Thanks for this great video. It really brings everything together. I have been plastering for years and this fills in a lot of little holes in knowledge. I have also joined your subscription service. That is oustanding as well. I hope your page continues to pick up subscribers.
That's great to hear and thank you for you kind words! I really appreciate that and it's great to hear it's helping ...I hope you're enjoying the emails 😉 Thanks again and I look forward to seeing your results soon!
Great video, thank you. I've done a few small plastering jobs. I'm going to have a go at plastering my newly built porch. Lots of good tips and detail. Cheers for the upload
Awesome vid. Brilliant instruction too. I’m having difficulty with the actual corners and edging to walls that are not being plastered. Do you have a UA-cam vid on covering that aspect?
Very informative and helping me brush up on my skills as originaly I was a tape & joint trowler then car repair with 2k filler. I am now going in to plaster complete walls and am watching you on here. My only info I am missing from you really is times in between coats and when to flat etc. A rough guide to timing would help if possible please. Or isit more a touch test rather than timing? Thank you for the effort you give us too.
Thanks B I love watching your vids you have a great way of explaining the process. I'm inspired by people taking pride in their work but its rare to see these days.
Hey Blaine, I found your videos and tutorials with the 10 steps really helpful and had a go myself. Firstly you make plastering look easy but it is possible for a complete novice! I have plastered 12 walls in my house one was the horrible porch to upstairs landing which was a timing nightmare and not to mention 3 ceilings! I improved over time and saved loads of money. The only downside was how long ot took but this was due to fitting it around the day job and a functioning house. Thanks again and Merry Christmas!
I was diagnosed with melanoma during the first part of the pandemic and had lots of time to look at the things that needed attention in my house...mainly the woodworm. As the floors were riddled, they all came up...along with parts of the stud walling to check whether they'd gotten in there too. Anyways, long story short, I'm still going now 😂😑😫 I have mostly been dealing with stuff found along the way such as cold spot black mould on the returns at the top of the wall into the ceiling in the master bedroom as a result of the plasterboard backing directly onto the soffit vents. I have sorted that now to the best of my ability...however, it's a mess and I don't think I'd be able to do it myself...although, I'm sure it'ld make some good content for a channel such as this. Well, it would if I were doing it at least 😂 Most of the time I've taken is getting the loft sorted...it had the old standard insulation to 100mm in the newer extension...it was the same in the older part of the house only they put plasterboard over the top of some old lath and plaster...which had about 8 X 30ltr hoover bags worth of coal dust laying atop it...along with about a wheeliebin's worth of plaster rubble. As we also redid the stud wall at the top of the stairs and put a new loft hatch in, I also have a couple of holes to patch. I'm about there...but, then, the plastering needs doing...I'm going to have to get some folk in I think as it'll take me way to long otherwise...and I don't think I'd be able to do the tricky bits. That said, watching this, you do make it look pretty easy...bet it's not though 😂
Love the video! It's really gonna help me with my renovation project. Quick question: what are the times between each of the stages and adding each layer of plaster? The products take time to cure so I'm just interested to understand what the timings are for each stage?
This was a very helpful video I wouldn’t of known where to start without it cheers buddy. ‘Twas easier than I thought. I’m a decorator by trade one of my walls started crumbling so scraped it back and replastered it. I’m still going to complain about the plasterer as soon as I get the brush back out lol
Your video's are superb and so very inspirational - I've plastered my first wall albeit a very small wall - keep the video's, tutorials and tips coming!
Cheers matey. Great hearing from you again. Ha that's actually the first Hawk I ever bought. It's over 13 years old and I left it at my mum's house...that's old school (hence the lack of foam ha) 😂
Hi Blaine love your videos mate really helped me out with plastering setting out work using straight edges much appreciated to a top spread all the best mate hope you had great new year 👍
Thank you for saying my friend! I really appreciate that - it's great to hear from people like yourselves so thank you!! Good luck with your plastering and thank you for watching. All the best 👍
Amazing videos I think the only thing that would makes these videos better is a quick temp snd humidty ready and then having a clock eith the time in the corner of the video. I would love to know how long this took you.
Great vid. Do you recommend a couple of spot lights to see what your doing better? and any tips on making sure you get your second coat fully covered as its hard to see?
Amazing stuff just finished video. I am adding skim coat to wall soon, might need to replaster dints everywhere. Can you skim coat a section leaving rest of wall? James
A great video that really strikes to the core of why many are here. As a new subscriber the only issue I am having is with locale. I live in USA. Can you suggest products that we can buy as well? Really about the plaster products mainly. Also this video really hits the bullseye. My question is does this same process work for drywall? Painted drywall. There is nothing like plastered walls. Do you have any videos where you have applied a knockdown finish to your walls and sunburst type ceilings, or is this for more advanced plastering techniques? Thanks again
Interesting. Every plasterer here in the Netherlands uses a feather edge after adding the plaster and not another layer of plaster is added. After feathering they use a taping knife and a sponge board for detailing and then finish up with the taping knife. The trowel is only used at the start to put the plaster on the wall. What is your opinion on this approach? Do you use a feather edge, taping knife and/or sponge board?
A good vid Blaine. I am glad you have put this realistic truth out there! My spine fusion has been delayed for another 6 weeks. Though TBH I can't blame all this issue on my 36 yrs of plastering, alone. I think the weakness was there already; Some guys that are my age that I went to trade college with are still doing well and are quite fit! My take is as you say; Maybe do the site work in your 20's and 30's then get out of it and into domestic. You will then have some control of your work schedule! The other issue might be to arrange your mortgage to 40yrs. This is the point when all the joints can start going! If you sort your mortgage early you might be able to slow down a bit and pick and choose your work. If you have limited financial commitments then you could in theory go on plastering small jobs indefinitely! Plastering as a life career, if planned correctly can serve to give you control of a business and carry on into retirement on a smaller scale. I do not know any other career that can offer this!
Sorry to hear about your back but I appreciate you sharing. It shows that it’s not an easy trade but at least it’s not everyone who gets injured. But I agree about not working too late in life...my granddad taught me the same. Anyway, thanks for the comment and thanks for watching. All the best 👍
Hi Blaine. I hope you're well. Thank you for another great and informative video! I'm not sure if you got my email last week but I'm new to plastering. I did my first solo wall at home the other day and I came away feeling really deflated - thinking I should of done a better job than I did. It's been a few days and I can see some surface cracks in 1 area now it's drying out, is this my fault please or can it just happen? I've got a mad passion for plastering, and I know I just need practice but I'm nervous about even asking family if they want plastering done now. Thanks once again. Btw, i wrote this to you yesterday from my new UA-cam account, i was about 15th to comment but i don't think it's showing up?
Hi Tara! Sorry about the email...I haven't seen it but I'll check my junk folder. In terms of plastering, don't let it get you down. It's a tough trade but I can promise that it gets easier with time. Every wall you plaster gets easier and easier. As for the cracking, it usually happens when the background you plastered wasn't prepared correctly or the background had to high a suction. Try adding a lot more PVA next time. You can never put too much on in my option. And don't get deflated. You're just learning and it was never going to be perfect on your first go. It's normal...every one has had it. But celebrate the fact you've tried it! That's the first step...and the hardest in my opinion Keep going. Don't give up and you'll be a pro in no time! Hope this helps...keep us posted with your results 👍
Hi, firstly, thank you for your content! It's amazing that you're sharing so much knowledge! I wanted to ask - what do you do if you find that theres sections where brick is exposed. Do you go over it with bonding plaster or hardwall? Thank you.

Why use PVA and not SBR?
How do you know when to start to flatten the wall, what consistency should the plaster be at?
Great video by the way!
Absolutely brilliant, very informative article and very easy to understand, thanks 🙏🏾
Hands down the most informative video on plaster I’ve watched. Wish I would’ve started with this one! Well done man.

As the floors were riddled, they all came up...along with parts of the stud walling to check whether they'd gotten in there too.
Anyways, long story short, I'm still going now 😂😑😫
I have mostly been dealing with stuff found along the way such as cold spot black mould on the returns at the top of the wall into the ceiling in the master bedroom as a result of the plasterboard backing directly onto the soffit vents.
I have sorted that now to the best of my ability...however, it's a mess and I don't think I'd be able to do it myself...although, I'm sure it'ld make some good content for a channel such as this. Well, it would if I were doing it at least 😂
Most of the time I've taken is getting the loft sorted...it had the old standard insulation to 100mm in the newer extension...it was the same in the older part of the house only they put plasterboard over the top of some old lath and plaster...which had about 8 X 30ltr hoover bags worth of coal dust laying atop it...along with about a wheeliebin's worth of plaster rubble.
Brilliant, and explained clearly, (FROM A NONE PLASTERER) THANKS
Thank you mate! I really appreciate it 👍
Love the video! It's really gonna help me with my renovation project. Quick question: what are the times between each of the stages and adding each layer of plaster? The products take time to cure so I'm just interested to understand what the timings are for each stage?
Very information and practical tips. Thank you very much
Top man... Putting other peoples needs first, Helping your Family when your supposed to be on Holiday 👍.Oooh and the plastering weren't to Shabby 😋
Great video 👍🏽🙏🏽
Thank you my friend!
NICE!
I wouldn’t ever wallpaper the wall! It’s a ‘work of art’ looks amazing !!
Thank you so much sir 🙏👏👏
Your videos are excellent. Thank you. You've helped me renovate my home.
Thanks pal! You're a legend for saying...cheers and congratulations on your renovations 👍
Perfect timing! Thank you so much for this. Wish me luck 😂😂😂
Good luck 😉
Good luck my friend!!
Admittedly I hate plaster that’s been polished so I skipped that part. It’s a bloody pain to paint
The one thing I would warn people about is using a steamer for wallpaper.
Great stuff
Your video's are superb and so very inspirational - I've plastered my first wall albeit a very small wall - keep the video's, tutorials and tips coming!
The only thing I have attempted to plaster is a cake! Can’t wait to take on my new project thanks to you…. Wish me luck 💗
I didn't know anything about plaster, after watching your video I have plastered the whole house. I can also easily finish whole wall in one go.Thanks
Well done my friend and thank you for watching. I really appreciate it 👍
Agree with the rest, great video (along with the rest) gives me the inspiration to do my own walls!
Cheers and good luck my friend!
Nice straight forward video for bringers, Not over complicated, that New hawk would be hard work for rendering, no foam protection 👍
Amazing videos
I think the only thing that would makes these videos better is a quick temp snd humidty ready and then having a clock eith the time in the corner of the video. I would love to know how long this took you.
Great video. which PVA do you use for a painted wall before plastering?
How long do I have to leave it in between each bit?
Roughly speaking you have 20mins for each stage pal 👍
Thanks very much teach
Excellent video. One question tho...does the first coat have to dry completely before you put the second coat on? Thanks
Did you plaster on original old plaster wall? Or was it wallpaper lining? Great video thanks
Great vid. Do you recommend a couple of spot lights to see what your doing better? and any tips on making sure you get your second coat fully covered as its hard to see?
Wow what a tutorial ✌🏻✌🏻✌🏻
Thank you very much! I really appreciate that mate 👍👍
@@PlasteringForBeginners true story bro very very good 😌
Amazing stuff just finished video. I am adding skim coat to wall soon, might need to replaster dints everywhere. Can you skim coat a section leaving rest of wall?
James
Brilliant
A great video that really strikes to the core of why many are here.
As a new subscriber the only issue I am having is with locale. I live in USA. Can you suggest products that we can buy as well? Really about the plaster products mainly.
Also this video really hits the bullseye. My question is does this same process work for drywall? Painted drywall. There is nothing like plastered walls. Do you have any videos where you have applied a knockdown finish to your walls and sunburst type ceilings, or is this for more advanced plastering techniques?
Thanks again
I'm at the framing up stage, looking forward to boarding and the plastering. Really informative video and giving me the confidence to have a go.
Thank you mate. I really appreciate that and good luck for when it comes to plastering. Thanks for watching 👍
Exellent!!
18:40 At this stage, are you pressing the whole face of the trowel onto the wall, or are you angling and just running the edge along the wall?
Interesting. Every plasterer here in the Netherlands uses a feather edge after adding the plaster and not another layer of plaster is added. After feathering they use a taping knife and a sponge board for detailing and then finish up with the taping knife. The trowel is only used at the start to put the plaster on the wall.
What is your opinion on this approach? Do you use a feather edge, taping knife and/or sponge board?
An honest question.. why replaster the whole wall when it only had some defects here and there? Would it show after applying wall paint?
All the best 👍
excellent.
Thanks 🎉
Saludos desde Argentina,un abrazo a la distancia muy buenos sus videos
👍👍
That's the first step...and the hardest in my opinion
Keep going.
Thank you.
