One thing I did read about the AMG one was, after 30k miles the engine requires a rebuild. I'm amazed they can get a road version of an F1 engine to last that long!
They lowered the redline from 15000rpm to 11000rpm (current f1 limit is actually lifted to 18000rpm since 2021). The current turbo hybrid era engines generally are good for about 1050hp. The one in the Project One is detuned to be about half of that. When they launched the concept in 2017, they said development would take 18 months so that it would be in production in 2019. It actually got delayed by three years and it's quite a challenge to get the F1 engine to be suitable for a hyper car.
I don't think there's been a time in history when so many wildly different strategies have been used to compete for the title of ultimate production car. This using F1 tech, the Valkyrie's big V12, the T.50 using fans, the Evija going full EV... we're going to have some amazing group tests over the next few years.

That "F1 engine into a road car" question was answered for me by the guy in Manchester who managed to shove a Cosworth V8 into a Mk1 Escort in the early 80's . . . It snorted and popped, danced at standstill, and vanished down Wilbraham Road like something from a science fiction film . . .

@@N7Sound There is nothing "just" about a properly engineered car. The AMG One is a one-off overweight white elephant of overly engineered and overly complex technology.
This reminds me of the LFA. Designed to bring F1 tech to the road, overbudget, delivered too late, everyone complaining about the spec sheet on launch. Well, I expect once they stop selling them people will put it up on a pedestal just like they did with the Toyota.
@@Yoomoron LFA was directly developed by the engineers who worked on Toyota's F1 team in the facilities they built for F1. The idea was to bring F1 tech to a road car including the excitement of a high revving V10 engine.

Not sure who's complaining already. Probably some youtubers hungry for "engagement" on their vids haha? A car is so much more than a spec sheet. No matter how much power is thrown at that chubby Bugatti, it'll never have the F1 credentials or technology this car does
I’m pretty sure one of the senior engineers is quoted as saying if they knew how difficult the project was going to be they wouldn’t have attempted it. Still, hats off to AMG for getting it done.
So the Aston Martin Valkyrie weighs substantially less, makes more power, and sounds far better. I know which one I’d choose, although most owners are probably getting both.
This car may suffer from 959/918/SLR syndrome. Yes, it's the least interesting on paper, but historically the boring options have turned out to be the superior choice in the long run.
It's 1700kg. I remember then the Mercedes SLR came out and everyone said it was too fat to compete with the focused Enzo and Carrera GT. They were right, at least on track. However also about 1700kg it was designed to be this super easy to drive two pedal comfy luxury car with a big boot, totally usable everyday. No matter what they say in this video about the 'practicality' of some Mercedes family switch gear (read: cost savings like the SLR) isn't this supposed to be a track focused dynamic weapon? With an engine and driving position, racing style steering wheel like that? So yes, this seems oddly heavy. That's where the Valkyrie and T.50 probably walks all over this on a track and driving enjoyment as they are less compromised on weight. If this is heavier as it is supposed be more usable it doesn't look it.
Fun fact: a while ago, while the AMG One was still being developed, they said it's gonna be around 1300 kilograms. It's almost 400 kilograms heavier now.
@@janiron1899 This is basically what I understood. At 1300kg it's totally a track weapon and devastating driving machine like the Valkyrie. At 1700kg it's nearly as heavy as a freaking SLR which has a boot big enough to put golf clubs in and is so easy to drive Paris Hilton famously rolled about in one all the time! Not to mention the SLR has a big displacement engine with a giant heavy supercharger designed originally for road use. Whereas this has a tiny power unit designed to be as light, compact and efficient as possible for the absolute bleeding edge of single seat racing. How comes the final thing is so heavy?
A real testament to not just the designers and engineers, but also the management for committing to the project, which I guess cost an insane amount of money to see through to completion.
This is one of those time if I was a car journo I'd be reminded of how much I love my job. I mean, even as a viewer, i get goosebumps from just watching this video on a small phone screen & listening to this Merc gentleman displaying his knowledge of the car.
Against any normal supercar, having an "F1 engine" would be very special. But compared to the crazy Cosworth V12s in the T50 and Valkyrie, I can't help but think a 1.6L V6 will feel a bit dry no matter the performance. No doubt it was incredibly difficult to integrate the powertrain into a road car, and I'm sure it will be very effective, but it isn't the same as an F1 car now they have had to civilise it for the road. I think the 11k+ rpm V12s will beat this for excitement, drama and noise.
In this category of cars, the Aston Valkyrie is still my favorite. A marvel of engineering and design IMO and of course 1:1 power to weight ratio and an absurd amount of downforce.
As he says. This engine may touch 500 hp if lucky. It may not even reach that. 4 electric motors on there to add up to 1063 hp with the ICE. I bet they worked for years to set up the software so that the ICE would be charging the batteries all the time, as to not end up in situations where there is only 450 hp left while starting the long straight of the Nordschleife. Porsche 918 ran out of boost there, but still had 600+ hp to push their lighter-than-ONE car. This ONE project started with confidence from winning F1 and immediately became a project to limit humiliation. I can't say it's looking successful. A 3-lap Nordschleife shoot-out against the Ferrari SF90 (similar concept, but super cheap in comparison) could get really sad for ONE.
they also claimed in 2017 that the car could go 0-200km/h in under 6s... 2.9s to 100km/h is just slow for the amount of power. Yes it's an F1 Engine but performance wise you can get an sf90 with 1000hp for way less.
I dont understand this car, it seems it is going to have excelent performance, but at the same time there isnt enough to differentiate from competitors. It seems similar to a 918 Spyder, but the 918 has been around for 9 years now. I expected more from Mercedes
Q: What happens when you put an F1 engine in a road car? A: Deliver an expensive, heavy car, late, that no longer has headline grabbing performance figures vs the competition... and (from a marketing point of view) at a time when the F1 team is no longer winning. At least it looks pretty.
@@randomperson9820 likely the compromises of a race engine vs a road engine. Producing big power from a tiny engine is feasible if it's highly tuned and not intended to last for more than a few hours of running. Detuning the engine (and replacing some components for tougher/heavier parts designed to last longer) would result in a drop in power, so they needed some other way of bringing the power back up to something close to what the F1 car has (otherwise it would look bad in comparison). Basically, there's a reason why road cars don't use race engines - they're intended to produce maximum power in the lightest and smallest possible package, but with the compromise of very limited lifetime.
Aston Martin will be snappy like all race cars are insane aero and lightweight but Mercedes is consistent in laps probably more predictable if it gets snappy than the Aston basically the Aston is dangerous but the Mercedes is less dangerous for all driver skills
Surprised by the weight considering this was originally touted as a rival to the AM Valkyrie. Both the Valkyrie and T.50 seem much more focused but the AMG One has an air of compromise, amazing technology but for what purpose?
T.50 is just a "driver's car" but by virtue of its weight will absolutely rip around a lap, and to high speed, on "only" 650 hp or so. The fan aero will give it more downforce than most cars that are also nice a slick at high speed. Valkyrie is like an LMP1 racecar with much cooler V12 sound and tiny hybrid boost, mostly for torque fill I guess. Barely room for 2 people but downforce to rival top race cars while faster in a straight line. ONE is just a VERY late one-up on the Porsche 918 with a huge caveat: they HAD to do a 1.6 V6 which will make their car very vulnerable on longer runs. They seem to compensate with four virtue signaling hybrid motors, but unless you are on a Formula E track, those batteries are going to run out and the WEAK 1.6 V6 will be exposed. They threw on loads of batteries for more virtue signaling and ended up with a car that weighs as much as a 4-seat all-electric family car. ONE is heavier than a much cheaper Ferrari SF90, it seems, but one board it will not seem a whole lot better. The stopwatch may not even be impressed. I really wonder where those 400-500 kilograms all went into that ONE, from first presentation to now production...
@@animekpopguy Doesn't Ferrari use a lot less carbon fiber than other brands? It's a quarter of the price or less with bigger displacement engine and more battery range. Still 1000 hp. And more of it left when batteries run out.
The V12 engines in the Valkyrie and the GMA T.50 are impressive, but those wild engines were designed to be street legal from the beginning. The whole appeal of the AMG One is that it has an actual Formula One race engine in it.

The fan for the downforce is much simpler than all the motors and hydraulics needed for AMG's aero which also would increase weight with all it's components. The lfa you use as argument only costs 300k when new. The amg one is NOT made to be driven with this price (let alone the markup) and exclusivity. Exactly my thoughts. It’s basically a much less comfortable SF90 that’s only gimmick is having some F1 tech. Don’t get me wrong, I love F1 - but everything is designed with restrictions in mind. They could have built a MUCH faster car if they just designed everything from the ground up instead of restricting themselves to an already existing hybrid 1.6L. I expect that 765LT would keep up with this in a straight line for the most part - and it will probably be quicker round a track considering it’s like 500kg lighter (not to mention that it’s less than 1/5 the price). Waiting to see how this Project One actually performs in real life because it doesn’t exactly seem impressive on paper.
it just seems too heavy. Even lotus has managed to make an all electric car, which is probably going to be faster neatly 500kg less than this. The GMA T50 is 700gk less and the Valkyrie is 600kg less. the car just doesn't fit in. the only car it might be better than (around a track) would be the T50, but that was designed for driving enjoyment.
This car is seriously overhyped. 1063 HP with electric motors which need regen, for 1700kg DRY? 1900 wet with driver and fuel? An SF90 will obliterate this thing.
The weight of the AMG One is not too far from some hybrid and electric cars. The problem is that is needs 6 catalytic converters, 2 filters, a heating system for these and 4 eletric motors, but to fit a real F1 engine into a car it is what it is.
@@AZVIDS @fiske at 7 .something seconds, both of which are good for a car that is built not only for high top speeds but also cornering speed and ability.

The AMG One was build to fit the F1 powertrain in a road car. The Valkyre was from a blank paper to get es much performance out of it as possibel. 2 different starting points leads to 2 different cars in the end. I can't believe they actually did it with the 1.6l V6 turbo hybrid. They are aware that these are the most hated powertrains in the history of Formula 1, right? There's a reason why the Valkyrie and T50 both use high-revving, naturally aspirated V12s. 🙄 I'm sorry, Mercedes, but the Ferrari F50 will forever remain the most desirable car with an F1 powertrain (as is reflected in its present value).
And the stats are not even really that special. It's slower than Porsche 918. Despite being Formula 1 technology, it's not even lighter than Porsche 918. Nearly a decade and almost no improvement.

Legend AMG One, Timeless
My favorite of the new hypercars. So happy to see this actually becoming reality!
why would you be happy? will you own one?
@@0710442022 I think most of us are happy because we can have it in the next racing game and the only people to drive these are going to be football players and rappers
@@dardoura for a car to be in a racing game you don't have to be happy about the real thing. I probably just don't understand.
And I doubt that footballers or rapper will drive these. More the sheiks and oligarchs of this world.
@@0710442022 they could be happy because their proud of Mercedes’. I certainly don’t know personally anyone who could afford one nor do I have the money but I’m happy Mercedes’ gained themselves new competitors by making another…. (Based on mercedes’s specs) HyperCar since they hadn’t made that was similar in specs and had exotic car look since the SLR and I’m also happy it’s officially done and models have been delivered because it means sooner then later this year more and more reviews will be done on the car.
As an enthusiast I can honestly say they took a little too long to get to this point. But they're all sold anyway 🤷♂️
They were sold out in 2017.
@@BeCreativePictures they sold out before the public even understood what this was. and they were sold out based on stats that this car currently does not live up to. so those customers got abit dooped
@@CITRUS-- well they probably still made money, as the waitlist was huge even before they sold out
@@BeCreativePictures 100% true but also think about how much longer R&D took due to the delays and brexit and covid. that money they made might have gotten chewed up.

The Forza Horizon 5 Cover Car 🖼
Hello Horizon 3 Racer
not worthy. Valkyrie > AMG1
Just watched this review and RBR’s review. Surprised to say that a one man show did it so much better than a whole production team of established TV crew in my opinion.
I thought the same
Red Bull are known to make wicked video and advertisement
Even Matt from CarWow did better than this
This is absolutely amazing, And I know it’s not open wheel but could DAS have worked in this car?
Imagine the grip
Ok second favourite thing about this video is how the project lead pronounces “vehicle”
I think it’s the best choice, after all that is THE engine of a championship winning car.
It’s different from the naturally aspirated v12 obviously, but not worst.
@@arianawoosley2841 It's not slower, it does 219 mph, the 918 does not.
@@Jinsun202 918 does 211. If not I'll take p1. it does 217 which is close enough and quicker to both 0-60 and 0-120. and substantially lower weight
Regardless they're all sold so it doesn't really matter to Mercedes since they don't plan to make any more, The Merc seems to be built more around actually being able to live with the car on a day to day basis and then taking it to the track if you choose to. The Aston looks like a pure bred racing car, borderline Le Mans style.
The Ferrari SF90 has 1,000 HP, takes only2.5s to 100KMPH. cost $500k, not $3m. You figure.
Just too damn expensive for what it does.
Just go for the SF 90.
I like that automakers are moving towards yoke steering.
I'm not much of a car guy, but I thought it would have more of a one-to-one power to weight ratio i.e. 1200hp to 1200 kgs
Think that'd be copying Koenigsegg too much
It's just extremely hard to accomplish. Plus the main goal was implementing the engine, which probably takes a lot of extra weight as far as implementing it into the car to make it road legal
@@koenigseggdubstep9837 No one cares about koenigssegg, irrelevant company compared to giants like bmw and Mercedes
@@unfresh1674 then there is absolutely nothing to be gained from using a throwaway F1 engine
@@E9X330 the point of using the f1 engine was to flex that it has a f1 engine. Which is worthy accomplishment on its own. Considering that I'm sure this engine won't shit itself as quickly cuz it's not a race car. It's a street car
Many, MANY years ago, following the success of the F40, Ferrari said that it’s successor, the F50 would essentially be an F1 car for the road, with an F1 engine, and the motoring press released many outrageous artists’ impressions of what it was going to look like.
Of course when actually released it was nothing of the sort.
Well the F50 nailed the driving comfort of an F1 car at least, didn't it.
Ferrari f50 is highly praised and expensive af
@@mito-pb8qg - Absolutely. I was more alluding to it’s looks, which the motoring magazines depicted in their artists’ impressions as a barely-changed F1 car, single-seater, central cockpit etc, rather than the road car that was actually released.
I remember seeing this car in Frankfurt in 2017 at the IAA, it was breathtaking and still is!!
Why doesn't chris harris drive those
You have 1 good reviewer who'd actually intrigue you and you never let him drive the track specials
1700 kg..... Colin Chapman would be laughing
Well, currently, he's rolling in his grave because a soulless Chinese megacorp is telling his company to make EV SUVs. 😂🤣
@@flyingphoenix113
That souless Chinese megacorp will put in more souls in a car than most soulful companies can dream of.
I like the fact that fans of F1 racing are now just a LITTLE bit closer to living out a daydream of actually racing. To have this type of engine in a street car is amazing. And yeah, I get it's a Hypercar but so what. It's something now on the street. And like it was mentioned earlier - no team of engineers and the like required.
Very impressive!!!
I was thinking about what I should get for my first car. Currently between this and the Corsa.
WOW it looks amazing... I really wished that they entered this car into WEC into LMH
I'd don't, it would get obliterated.
@@F1ll1nTh3Blanks Obviously not as is. But it is very very similar to GR010, In fact the engine has more power. But the motors in the front are less powerful by 100hp
I couldn't help but chuckle everytime this guy says "WEEHICLE" 😄
Feel like I'm the only person in the world that is disappointed with what this car turned out to be
Don't feel alone, I'm here. This car was overhyped.
Me too. The straight line performance ist relatively weak for Price and 1000hp. It reminds me a bit of a 2017 Ford GT, which is nearly as fast as this, with 350hp less, plus it has an equally track focused chassis.
You’re not alone
I don't even think it looks that cool
Was hoping to hear how it sounds. Hopefully track mode also increases the idle revs.
11:40 something
the road noise is louder than the car.
If it sounds like the current generation of F1 cars, then nothing to write home about. All signs are pointing to this car being a massive disappointment compared to its peers and for its price. I’m reminded of that line from Jurassic Park “they were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should.”
@@tim916 Perfect quote. My thoughts exactly!

Yes I am biased, but man, Mercedes and AMG know how to push the ball ahead... This is absolutely wild! We are desensitized to things in general because there is so much going on that is incredible, 1,000hp is not even crazy anymore... but it actually IS lol and this build is special!
I love the fact the body is not similar to any Mercedes. Finally great looking car by them.
It is not that far from CLK-GTR
