Exactly, and in those sports you have the ability to run out the clock and, most importantly, not engage at all. There are no neutral outcomes in baseball. In a blowout, Tom Brady doesn't have to throw the ball and affect his completion percentage any further or risk throwing a pick, he can just take a knee. Steph Curry doesn't have to keep shooting and affect his shooting percentage, they can just run out the shot clock. A hitter must take their bat and it will have an impact on them either positive or negative. There is no neutral option where you do not engage, the at bat will count.

Right. My only problem is that he either missed or ignored a sign by his manager. That’s a good point. I will take it a step further and propose that not swinging the bat with a position player on the mound could be seen from the “unwritten rules” mindset as playing too aggressively in a blowout because you are both employing a strategy and extending the game by taking the 3-0 pitch to get runners on base and score. The defense has a better chance of getting outs with a position player on the mound when the ball is put in play, so why come down on a guy for swinging?

If a player swings through your sign and then gets open public support from his teammates on social media thats on YOU. Do your job and gain the respect of your players. Reprimand him privately if anything at all. La Russa did the opposite and completely threw the kid under the bus which probably created a rift even wider than what was there already.

@@gerrypellissier9551 I'm with you on the DH, I do like the changes to collisions at the plate and sliding way away from the bag to break up the double play. A catcher on my high school team had his leg broken by a collision at the plate in a preseason tournament and we didn't make playoffs that year because we didn't have his bat. The first game he came back he knocked out a light on the scoreboard over our left field fence. I've ran into a few catchers before, tournament ball and high school, and I never liked that part of the game. That's for the football stooges who don't have the skill and nuance for baseball. As for breaking up plays at second base, there was always a sense of sportsmanship about it when I did it, don't go in spikes up, go for the feet, and don't just obliterate the guy, just mess up his throwing motion. I think the intensity of playoff baseball created that rule with the best fielders on the team getting injured by runners trying to kill the guy without even going for the base. Part of the skill of turning a double play is getting out of the way of the slide, and if they guy just goes way off the basepath to do it, that's an issue. I think there's a lot more issues with how the MLB handles baseball that causes disinterest in the sport than those two rules. Blackouts are stupid, prices are outrageous, instead of focusing on the fun parts of baseball, like Jomboy does a great job of, they focus on storylines no one cares about. Part of why I enjoy baseball so much, and why I think many people don't, is that there's so much nuance to each pitch, there's a million things to look at on the field at any time. A commentator saying a pitcher missed his spot doesn't mean anything if the average viewer doesn't know why that spot is there and why he's pitching the pitch he is. That will drive interest up far more than some guy's silly bat flip every time he hits a homerun, in my opinion. It's funny though, it's all the people who never watch a game of baseball who come chime in when one of these unwritten rules gets attention to talk about how stupid they are when they've never played past tee ball. Nobody talks about how stupid it is if a basketball player gives a hard foul on someone who taunted him, or in the NFL when someone demolishes a QB who was disrespecting their team before the game. It's only baseball where you can't retaliate against disrespect for some reason.
@@Alexander_Grant Most of course what you say I agree with. I still like the contract at second and home. I've seen almost all the greats play, mostly on TV. I totally applaud MLB network for employing two articulate former Big Leaguers as analysts. Carlos Pena and Yonder Alonso are eloquent and insightful in their commentary.
If we actually want to end the game if it's a blowout, then swinging 3-0 and putting the ball in play is much better than accepting a walk from a position player.
LaRussa is one of the greatest managers in the game. But has he lost the respect of his clubhouse because of this? Not backing up your players is a quick way to lost them.
So I guess, in that situation, even if it takes two trips through the line up to get 3 outs after every batter takes, I guess larussa is fine with that instead of just playing baseball and getting it over with
I completely agree with everything said here. If TLR gave him the sign to take (who knows if that actually happened) then he should have taken it. On the other hand, though the competitor in me says you throw me a piece of cheese then I am blasting that thing out of the park. TLR defending the Twins for hitting his guy should have been a firable offense. I also think that if a pitcher throws a 95 mph fast ball at a guy the batter should be able to come at him with the bat.
A manager that commands no respect gets no respect. Based off of the support he got on social media from his teammates, the Sox seem to be doing well despite TLR, not because of him.
If I saw a pitch on 3-0 that I know for a fact could hit the absolute shit off I would. I wouldn’t care what my manager said and say to him I didn’t see the sign. TLR doesn’t deserve any respect and easily TLR lost the clubhouse with his comments
You can hear him shouting take take take in some videos out there... Kid ignored him. If I ignore my boss there's gonna be some splaining to do! Why is that any different here?
There are "unwritten rules" that seem designed to benefit one player at another's expense, like for some reason you're not supposed to break up a no-hitter with a bunt, even with the infield playing back. And then there's sportsmanship, like whether or not you swing for the fences on a 3-0 count with 2 outs in the 9th inning of a blowout after the opposing team clearly has given up. Are you the type of person who would swing for the fences in that situation? I don't know, are you the type of person who would drive for an unopposed dunk in the last 4 seconds of a blowout basketball game? There are goofy "unwritten rules," and then there's sportsmanship. Obviously there is plenty of grey area in there between the two, but they *are* different things.
No kidding: " Boys, they're going to rest their bullpen to give them a better chance of beating us tomorrow. So let's not do anything to hurt their feelings while they're doing that."
I find it funny that the mindset is, after a certain score stop competing. If a manager decides to put a 2nd baseman on the mound, it’s the manager that should take the blame. Not blame the player if he hits the ball.
There needs to be a conversation about why duffey was only suspended 3 games for throwing at someone while Amir Garrett was suspended 5 games for being happy that he struck someone out.
I was watching that game, and all he did was celebrate the strikeout. The Cubs got mad, so he got suspended. He didn't throw the ball at anyone, and he didn't throw any punches. The even worse part is that he was originally suspended 7 games and it was appealed down to 5, when he literally didn't do anything to anyone.
y'all keep saying respect the sign. but Mercedes never looked for a sign. it was clear he was on his own. i havent seen any video of the thirdbase coach. manager not protecting his all star. ugh .
They put in a position player to save the bullpen for tomorrow. That’s breaking the biggest unwritten rule of all: you play to WIN. By throwing a backup position player on the mound, they’re giving up on this game. At that point, they don’t have the right to ask for the opposing hitters to give special favors and take free strikes and go easy on them. If you’re giving up on winning, you bet your ass I’m going to play as hard as I can.
The problem with the unwritten rules is the pitcher doesn’t hit in the American League.. If that guy had to step in the batter’s box, he wouldn’t throw at that guy for that.. Some things are worth administering some justice on the field, like what Tatis did, peeking at signs.. MOB isn’t gonna do anything about that, so players have to..
This is disrespectful to the fans that pay money to come to the game. That game may be a kids only game, you think he wants to see a guy strike out on purpose because of some bullshit rule from the dinosaur age.
I read this comment on another unwritten rule video… 99% of all unwritten rules are to protect the pitcher The pitcher is allowed scream and fist pump after a strikeout but god forbid if a hitter shows ANY emotion after a home run Easily the softest type of athlete in all of sports
No one's asking why the White Sox best player was still in the game. Usually in blowouts in any sport the coaches take out the best players to avoid injuries in meaningless situations.
Major league baseball games are 9 innings, not 8. As the home team you have thousands of people who paid good money to see you compete. Just because you're getting your butt kicked does not give you the right to just throw in the towel. This situation reminds me of the 2018 ALDS between the Red Sox and Yankees, game 3, the Yankees are getting blown out of the water in front of their fans, getting booed, and have to make a decision weather or not to put in a position player, which they do. Brock Holt was a home run to become the first ever player to hit for the cycle in a playoff game, he just barely got enough on the ball to do so. The Yankees didn't throw at Holt in game 4, or in any future game, they simply took the HR and accepted the blow out defeat. This guy is going up to bat and going on the field not knowing if that will be his last time playing on field in a major league uniform. You play to win the game, it's that simple
Until there is a clock in baseball like most other sports. You play hard until the final out because in baseball anything can happen. Isn’t that what makes baseball great?
The only unwritten rule I can get behing that exists to protect the pitcher’s feelings is that a baserunner shouldn’t walk on the mound. But it should only result in a HBP if the runner get’s a chance to apologize and doesn’t
Bottom line; if you’re a pitcher and you don’t want a batter swinging on a 3-0 pitch, then perhaps don’t put yourself in a 3-0 position. If you were up in the count 0-2, you wouldn’t through a ball high and wide to give him a ball, would you????
How’d they not bring up the White Sox manager grilling his own player for hitting that? That’s even worse than the twins imo cause how you gonna throw your own player under the bus?
In Cricket, when you're getting destroyed by the other team they go harder as a sign of respect! I get why all the managers would not be cool with this so they can save themselves from a sacking.

Larussa needs to reconsider when he gives the take signs and not throw them up in situations where there is absolutely no logical reason to take
That’s a good point.
Frankly after watching Jomboy's breakdown. I don't think LaRussa actually yelled. I didn't see it. So unless someone has a video of him yelling, "Take! Take!" I don't believe it. I think he's just staying face for the media.
Actually, swinging 3-0 late in games should be encouraged. It will speed up the game, and is definitely in the pitcher's favor. Think about it, if you swing, there are 3 negative outcomes (out, swing and miss, foul ball) to 1 positive outcome (hit).

Not jog after a homerun? Yeah, you need one to the ribcage. This should be a complete non-incident.
@@Alexander_Grant You played the game so you know it's being ruined by the Snowflakes. Hardly any plays at second base. No more collisions at home plate. I hate the DH. It's almost like the rules in the local softball league.
I think the team is giving him a second chance. If LaRussa screws that up, he's gone.
I like these 3 together

He made a good point, pitchers will still pitch you the same way in a blow out
Reminds me of people who'd complain and say you're cheating if you throw too many fireballs in Street Fighter, haha.
Imagine their being unofficial rules saying “oh no. The opponent isn’t very good. Let let them stay close”. That sounds fucking stupid
The real disrespect is putting a position player on the mound against a professional hitter.

I find it funny that the mindset is, after a certain score stop competing. If a manager decides to put a 2nd baseman on the mound, it’s the manager that should take the blame. Not blame the player if he hits the ball.
Unwritten rules are fine but that shit goes out the door when you throw a 280lb position player on the bump.

I will laugh if the White Sox fans boo TLR when he goes to hand the ump his lineup card when they go back to Chicago on Monday.
It's a freaking blowout! Why is the manager still micro-managing the game at that point?
There needs to be a conversation about why duffey was only suspended 3 games for throwing at someone while Amir Garrett was suspended 5 games for being happy that he struck someone out.
It’s because Garrett has a reputation for starting fights, while Duffey has had no prior incidents.

What was the point for the take call in the first place? Why would an MLB player listen to a call that basically says don’t hit this homerun.
Brace yourselves: the insanity of Planet Madison Bumgarner is upon us.
Until there is a clock in baseball like most other sports. You play hard until the final out because in baseball anything can happen. Isn’t that what makes baseball great?
Let's start a gofundme for Tyler Duffey.
Respect your manager.
Players get paid based on stats. Crush every meatball outta the park, make that money!
Make baseball fun again
How’d they not bring up the White Sox manager grilling his own player for hitting that? That’s even worse than the twins imo cause how you gonna throw your own player under the bus?
In Cricket, when you're getting destroyed by the other team they go harder as a sign of respect! I get why all the managers would not be cool with this so they can save themselves from a sacking.
Isn’t there a rule against throwing a ball at a batter? written or unwritten? I mean which is worse? Play to win or get off the field.
LaRussa should've put the heat on himself by saying he greenlighted the 3-0 swing... and taken care of issues like disobeying/missing signs in house, that's what a true leader would do and LaRussa chose to do otherwise
La Russa is in the wrong, you put a position player on the mound I'm sorry unwritten rules or not 3-0 im swinging for the fences. Duffy throwing behind him is bs. You don't want to get lit up throw better pitches use actual pitchers.
