    Really neat little project. That drive is really deep though. Its slowing you down quite a bit. A jet drive would probably work better since it would push more directly on the back of the boat instead of 20" below.

    • @samsonian
      @samsonian 3 роки тому

      I concur...it’s also providing some scary handling characteristics and in the right situation could cause the boat to porpoise and capsize.

  • @carlstone5735
    @carlstone5735 4 роки тому +27

    It might be to your advantage to buy a used personal watercraft as a jet drive donor, I would keep the motorcycle engine setup, but have it run the jet drive instead of the lower unit. The jet drive will weigh less than the lower unit enabling you to achieve smoother acceleration and higher speeds on the water.

      You actually lose a lot of power with a jet drive. With outboards a 150hp prop drive will be rated as 115hp jet drive. Same motor.

    Its an awesome build! Love the idea! And the cv joint takes care of so many engine/sterndrive problems. But I hate to point out your leg is too low, the planing plate of the leg should line up with the bottom of the boat, or even a "c" hair above the bottom on a fast boat

    You can also have another gear ratio to play with your plan of straightening the drive shaft. Then you can dial it in for like a 3rd gear take off with the light weight boat. No need to start in first unless ur stern drive gearing is heavy and cant get you on plane quickly. Awesome fun project, i look forward to seeing more. I should share the crazy thing im doing in Ontario Canada.

    Make sure that outdrive isn't too low in the water. The top water intake hole should be inline with the lowest part of the hull. I couldn't tell if you had a whale tail on it, but if you don't you might consider it as it improves turning, efficiency, and time to plane. As far as the jackshaft idea goes, I like it, but personally, I'd move the engine back before doing it. Then again, I don't know much about boat weight balance, or that of this particular build, just that most boats have the majority of weight in the rear half.

    For the cooling system, get a water to water heat exchanger. You use coolant in the engine, but it is cooled with a radiator in a tank with water flowing through it. They are used in “closed cooling systems” on many boats.

    This will sound ridiculous but pay attention to the tempature of your fuel in that tank. It may not become an issue but there is a good possibility that your fuel will get pretty hot fairly quick having the system set up the way you do. Having a fuel pump running all the time like that essentially in a bypass situation creates heat. Even though its a small amount of fiel constantly being pumped your tank is also small so it can get heated very quickly. A Mr Gasket or Edelbrock 12v fuel pump for 3-5psi can be bought off ebay or amazon for $40.

  • @socore4659

    wow that's fun. The outdrive is mounted a bit low though...the general rule of thumb is the cavitation plate should be even with the lowest part of the hull (the point of the "V"), or if it's further back, you can even have it above. If it is too low, it will create too much drag and also "bog" the prop down. It also affects the trim of the hull. Too late now i guess :) but you'd get higher revs and all around better performance if this key element was addressed.

    • @socore4659
      @socore4659 4 роки тому +1

      that's also why you have that weird rooster tail happening. the water coming off the hull is hitting the cavitation plate wrong. If you get it up higher that won't happen, and that's how you'd know it was in the right place. If you want a quick fix for this you can change the pitch of the propellor to a lower pitch one.

    • @homemade_madness
      @homemade_madness  4 роки тому

    Great idea to have gears. Ever looked at a jack plate on outboard. Idea is to have prop half way below bottom of transom. Move x dimension up and back. Stainless prop will have less deflection more top speed. 4 blade is hole shot 3 blade for speed. Jet drive you will loose speed.

Put a seat in front of the engine. The FX HO hulls are almost 13 feet long - Should easily hit 70 mph stock with the weight removed and a slightly repitched impeller.

    • @uglyfxxx6981
      @uglyfxxx6981 3 роки тому +1

      That really depends. A jet ski can have 50 hp but most jet skis are about 100 hp. Crazy expensive 1s with superchargers have like 250 hp.

    • @rncboy2
      @rncboy2 3 роки тому +1

      Some built skis have around 350 to 500 horse. The thing that they lack is a 6 speed manual transmission gear box that a bike engine has. That changes the drive ratio of the turbine in the jet propulsion system that sucks the water from under the boat forcing it out the rear. That's wear the gain would be with a bike engine the only down fall is bending the drive shaft unit to that propeller in the the turbine resulting in catastrophic failure and possibly sinking the boat. If I remember correctly the best way of getting more speed is changing the pitch of the prop killing lowend but gaining topend if the engine has the torque to compensate with any type of boat engine you dont really need the hp your more after the torque because water is denser then rolling a car down the road.

    I’d do a overdrive with the chain so you don’t have to shift. Since it’s a jet pump you want it to not be able to rev out all the way and hit limiter you want the pump to load it hard enough where it can’t over rev
