  • Part 5 of my jetski build, 3rd time she's been in the water, but the first time with its own engine! it was very complicated to work out a cooling system, with a watercooled exhaust, but it worked pretty good aside from some driveline problems, which were to be expected

I would dearly love to be your age again to have the strength to build things like this myself. I am a 76 year old former VW and Alfa Romeo mechanic who built an open frame dune buggy and 7' 10" hydroplane boat in my youth. I have four Honda motorcycles but I dreamt of putting a Yamaha V-Max engine in a jet ski and here YOU are with almost exactly what I was thinking. Here in Florida USA there are all kinds of jet skis available cheap with blown engines and the idea of transplanting a water-cooled motorcycle engine would be right up my alley. Congratulations on your build and your welding skills!

Your builds...but especially this one...has inspired me to do a project of my own. Nothing like your projects...its a pavilion roof for my patio. Carpentry is my skill set. But it's an elaborate design...timber frame with heavy beams and lots of joinery. I swear it's because of watching you that I say "I can do this"...don't limit yourself. I get the timbers delivered this week. I am doing it all myself...I've even made a mobile crane for lifting heavy beams by myself. Thanks for the inspiration. Also...that engine sounds gnarly!

I’m hoping to build my own jet boat in the coming months. I already have a vfr 750 engine and gearbox a boat is easy enough to pick up but I don’t have the skills or tools to fabricate the jet drive so I’m stuck with having to source a drive from a jet ski which could probably cost more than the boat I intend on buying.
Thanks for your videos as they’ve answered questions I didn’t know existed. All food for thought.

Very cool! Are you sure the belt is under proper tension? Under load the metal structure might deform and make the belt slack. I think that belt should handle that power under the right circumstances.

One idea for an improved drive system in replace of the belt would be a snowmobile chain-case, affordable and able to withstand a lot of power., plus if the chain were to break you wouldn’t have it potentially damage the hull.

Man your skills in fabrication are really impressive! You manage enought to make everything you think work in metal-working, welding, wood-working and fabricating. Considering your young age is really impressive, my compliments! Iwish to leave you a suggestion anyway: to rise the belt shaft make new two plates made of a sigle piece each, if you want to add a piece like you did I suggest to weld it with a 7018 rod with a proper bevel because is much stronger than MAG welding, consider that are very stressed areas from the torque of the shaft.

Looking great, lots of power and should be fun!
Point on the drive belt, set the tension correctly and the belt should never skip, so don't remove it and change yet. Belt will be quiet compared to other options. Maybe need a mechanical threaded adjuster to set and hold the tension properly.

Great project thanks for sharing. Love the "sounds" of the engine thru your headers and exhaust system. Perhaps the belt needs to have more tension but I am sure from watching that you will fix that problem. My concern is that it seems that perhaps your boat is a little short and too small for the combined weight of the engine and yourself. She seems to sit a little too low in the water and she ploughs a bit. It does look like you almost hit "plane" but a little more rake in the hull would make it lift quicker. I have built a few boats back in the 60s and 70s so it's been a while and I am far from being a master boatwright. Keep your videos coming.
