“Preload top hit” - Nearly every search I do loads an “Ad” as the top hit, even when it’s the store/website I asked for. Does that mean it’s preloading all those Ads also?
The way you give directions is so easy to follow. I watch on my iPad, pause the video to make corrections on my iPhone, then continue the video. This has helped me so much. I like your style.
I like how some apps try to get you to say yes to tracking by saying “no, I would prefer to see less relevant ads” because it’s trying to say “are you sure, do you really want to see ads that aren’t right for you.”
Many of these settings I already had turned off such as “personalized ads” but I’ve still had very personal ads for a long time. I’m guessing there’s other hidden things that we can’t actually turn off and access 🤔

There are lots of us across the country, and we are often not considered in the digital world. This was really helpful. Thanks 😊
I have the Iphone SE 2020 and it doesn't have the System services under Privacy, but rather under Cellular. Can't turn them off, they only show how many mb/kb used. So does just turning off Cellular Data stop those from gathering data. They don't have switches under System Services.
Appreciate these tips. One bit of feedback: In the section about personalized ads, there is some misinformation. Opting out of personalized ads will not result in the ad platform skipping sending you an ad. You are correct that highly targeted campaigns will not bid on your impression, but there are always lower valued ads with looser targeting parameters. The ad platform will just send you a lower value, less targeted campaign. Source: 10 years digital ad platform experience
What it means is you still get ads .... but they will be non-personalized ... meaning you could get ads for machines to harvest cranberries to baby powder to wood cutting tools .... in other words ... you just get random ads ... and like they said, you become less valuable for them to track, bid on, etc.
I know this is an older video but watching this has informed me a lot and your comment has helped me understand targeting much better. Thank you Charles!
Having recently switched from being Android-only to an iPhone, this was pretty helpful. Was pretty lost even trying to navigate thru stuff, and sadly when buying the new iPhone, the guy working in the store said "Sorry, there's no on-hand demos due to Covid, but hey, just UA-cam some stuff."
Dear David & David, Thank you from a Tech challenged 66 year old. I found your video easy to understand and follow. altho I had to pause it many times to catch up. I am very grateful for this video and I will be sharing it with my friends ...
Thanks guys, this really helpful to me, although I’ll have to watch this many many times to understand what you’re trying to explain. I grew up before technology and feel like an idiot. I’m sick of asking my friends and especially my 2 teenage daughters to sort me out. I want to figure this stuff out myself. I have to say the way you are presenting your content seems very understandable. Thanks again. Donna from Australia 🇦🇺
I agree 100 %. My kids know way more than I do on this Android. There should be an instruction booklet for those of us who take notes, I'm probably forgetting something 🙄
I thank you guys. You were probably one of the first teams I've found, who've showed me how to conserve battery live in earlier iOS's. Since, I've found over 20 things I've turned off in order to preserve my battery . I don't use Siri and I've found a ton of toggles to turn off. My battery has shown major improvement concerning health. Thanks again and keep up the great work.
I use Siri, so I leave her on. She's a great help to me, but, dang, I found out other things I didn't even know that were on, that I didn't need on, so, it was great that I turned them off.
The greed is breathtaking. Early phones one could just buy a new battery. Now we need to buy a whole new phone. The cobalt needed for phone batteries is mined by the poorest of the poor in the Congo and Zambia. We need to be far more aware and speak up.
I have a problem with my iPhone 11, I can’t swipe bottom left corner to bring up open apps to close them down. Is there anything I can do rectify it please?
I just bought an iPhone 13 and had a lot of features already turned off but David & David really show settings you need to turn off and give a screen shot of every change. Very Helpful! Really useful info that they explain in a clear and concise way.
Weirdly, I already had most of these settings in place. I guess I must have seen a video like this before. (Edit: I just noticed I watched one of your vids two years ago! I shall subscribe now, haha) The only thing I left on is significant locations because I find certain aspects of this handy when using maps and calendar, and I also like how it associates photos with their locations.
Had the standards off already like the analytics etc - I usually always turn them off when setting up the phone (they actually ask you for a few things) but the rest was very helpful - some of the more “hidden“ things were still on - great video! 👌🏼
🏡... I subscribe because I'm lost without the 2 of you . I just need a close up and a slow poke view . Your directions are excellent . Speech is clear and Audio is perfect . Perfect direct every time ...🏡
Philis, thank you so much for your kind words and for the compliment on our audio. We put sooooooooo much time (and money) into improving it! ❤️ And we're still getting better.
I have a LG STYLO5 with Android 10 and i did get to quick settings developer tiles , but my phone doesn't have tge SWITCH for SENSORS OFF??? HOW can i find where it is located???
Amazing tips thank you. Only thing is that your tips on data usage are more relevant to North America and Europe. Thankfully In India we have unlimited data with no capping so no issues
We have unlimited data plans here in Finland too. I have one myself, unlimited calls, text messages and data for about 25€ per month which is about 30 USD
I just watched this video and followed through every suggestion and my phone is actually not running hot anymore, even when watching UA-cam. Extremely useful content.
Thanks so much, your videos are clear and concise. As a senior owner of my first iphone, no one takes the time to explain in detail the importance of battery life, apps, etc. etc. Keep up the excellent work. You've made this senior a happy one, didn't need to attend classroom instruction!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What’s wrong with turning off allowing the tracking is a lot of apps have updated to not work or keep you logged in if you don’t allow the tracking. eBay just refuses to allow you to log in and buy anything unless you allow it to track you.
I did not know this, but this is correct . I just had to delete a few apps because of it. I will keep the needed ones but if I do not use it I figure I should just lose it. I can always replace if needed.
This is first video of iPhone suggestions that I truly needed to know about. I really like how you explained the system apps because i have always heard “don’t mess with those because they are what makes your phone work. Question concerning Find my phone or iPad or whatever. Living in Memphis, violent crime is bad and I like that if my wife doesn’t hear her phone ring, I can check on her whereabouts using that feature. I don’t want to mess that up by disabling location settings or any settings for that matter. Essentially, should I do anything different from what you said in the video keeping in mind that knowing my family’s whereabouts is my priority? For instance, one setting “kept a history of the phones location “…could this not be beneficial if, God forbid, an abduction occurred? Did I mention I’m in Memphis!? Great video!
Since I turned off the suggested settings that you said to turn off, there’s a few that I had turned off but not as many as you said . Now my phone is running 100% better not lagging down and not overheating, my phone was running so slow that it was almost beyond ridiculous, last few days my phone is running so much better I go on an app and it pops up I don’t have to wait two minutes for it to load
What iPhone are you using? Even the oldest supported iPhone (the iPhone 6S) shouldn’t be that slow. Sounds like either a battery failure or you need to wipe the phone clean and start fresh.
I read somewhere recently that it’s not abnormal for a device to be super slow after an update because a lot of apps will still need to update and a lot of changes continue happening in the background, but idk
! How do I disable the obtrusive ANNOYING “Low Battery” warning notifications? Or change settings to only show when battery falls below 5% (or some other custom setting)
Great video, HOWEVER I found out the hard way one of the problems of a particular setting. The moving-view perspective in map navigators is one of the most useful things as you actually know which direction you are looking towards when looking on the map. To keep this feature working, you actually need to leave enabled the *Compass Calibration* in the *Settings > Privacy > Location Services > System Services* to be able to keep your moving view perspective in map navigators. I also keep enabled the *Motion calibration & Distance* even though it looks to be working without it too
Thanks for the tips. I moved from an android to a iPhone 12 a few months ago and I spend a lot more cellular data even though my usage remained the same as before the switch. Maybe these tips will help me reduce that. Thank you :)
Super helpful! The blond guy gives very good explanations about the settings and that help me learn and make a decision ^^ and the other guy is very clear also
I watch you guys for tips. I wanted to let you know that, yes, there are still those of us who live rurally that do not have internet, cellular only. So it is super important that Apple allow updates and backups over cellular as an option no matter how much data it takes.
5:39 - Just a heads up, I believe the amount of ads won't change by turning off the personalized ad function! I say that because there are a lot of big companies out there that will pay for ad space against essentially any audience (i.e. they're targeting anyone with a pulse); the ad inventory will always be filled. Turning off that setting just means ads overall will be less relevant :)
We hear you, Devin! Depending on the ad network, 100% fill rate isn't a guarantee. On our websites we set a CPM floor and run house ads (just things that say, "Hey, check out our UA-cam channel" and stuff like that) instead of accepting pathetically low CPMs from advertisers who run low-quality ads. I understand the argument but I still haven't heard anyone say, "I turned this off and now the ads I see just aren't as high quality as they used to be." I agree that you're correct in principle - I'd just like some real world experiential data to back it up.
Love all of these but those are my emotional support tabs and I need them open. Also Bc they’re all bookmarked things I’m reading. All different 😅 I’ll close them when I’m done
I cannot find SYSTEM SERVICES on my iPhone XR IOS 15.3.1 : where (under which tab) is this located? I looked under Privacy and General tabs, and do not see it
For significant locations, there’s wording that says that turning it off will affect many Apple apps, maps, do not disturb when driving, CarPlay, Siri, calendar and photos. You didn’t mention this and was wondering if turning this off will have an adverse effect on these. Thank you.
@@lenleon3699 exactly and the back up consumes so much data, and we usually use data when we're out, why would you back up your phone while you're out and about? It makes no sense

I was really struggling with battery life on my SE after upgrading to 15. I followed the advice on this vid and now its right back up there. I'm delighted not to have to buy a new phone. Thanks guys. Really helpful;.
Thanks, guys, for giving us some insight into the ways the tech giants are ensuring our operating system and application settings make everything about us available to the highest bidder. I love how Facebook played the wounded “people’s app” when Apple gave its users the choice to refuse being tracked.
Great guides for so many people who don’t know about this, and it’s shocking to see how much this can help battery life, my friends phone after a year is at 89% battery capacity…. Mine is 96%
Battery health at 100% after 7 months and yea I don’t let the battery capacity stop to 20% I keep it at 75 and recharge keeps the battery in good shape and extends life .
Very useful, especially explaining the nonsense things that can be confusing. After each suggestion I pause your video went to settings and configured it so I wouldn’t miss anything and could follow along as I went rather than writing down notes and doing it after the video. Thank you so much
Finally, FINAlly!, FINALLY!!!. 2 people who actually know what they are talking about. I just bought a brand new iphone 14 pro max 3 weeks ago and im big on battery life, so I went to youtube and google and not one! single thread or video is out there that even comes anywhere close to you guys. And if they would tell me to turn off a setting they couldn’t even tell me the reason why “this setting” should be turned off. With you guys I had to pause the video 100 times just to keep up. My battery was going from 100% too 10% in 2 days with average use watching other videos. With you guys, its been 2 days and my battery went from 100% to 85% with the same average use. Thanks so much Payette Forward!! Definitely is worth subscribing to your guys’ channel 🎉

Now that the rest of us finally have access to IOS 15, this was extremely useful!! Now I just have to go back and review all of the prior videos about IOS 15 to catch back up.
Hi D&D, I enjoy your channel very much, which I am a subscriber. I noticed while I was changing my settings before and after installing 15. That while you were going through each change. I noticed that your screens were somewhat different. I’m guessing it’s because you have the iPhone 12. I just had to purchase a new phone, because my 8 plus, just completely died. Took it to the Apple store to see if if they could fix it. I was surprised how the phone died. I really don’t use it that much. I purchased an 11. I like using my iPad, everything is bigger. You both do it great job with your presentations…

I did see the point of some of this and think saving some battery power is important. As a software engineer/DBA, improving performance of things makes me happy. When it comes to ads, though, I’d rather see ads that do match my interests than not. I get some privacy concerns are involved if the advertising data is identifiable, but knowing I’m a cyclist and prefer certain brands is hardly going to steal my identity.
It's invasive and weird and I don't care if it helps a brand attempt to sell me something they think is more relevant to me because I'm conscious of how they were able to figure that out.

This video gives a lot of bad advice. Sad that less knowledgable people latch on to these tips. Beyond the privacy tips, most of the things they suggest to turn off remove useful features from your phone. Features you may want to use one day.

Back up over cellular and similar settings are GREAT. I wish Apple would also allow iOS upgrades over cellular. Why? Here in Finland, and many other countries, most cellular data plans are unlimited. Just because data plans in the U.S. are not great doesn't mean, that iOS shouldn't consider the rest of the world.
You point out your local Credit Union’s tracking of location as something to turn off. What if your CU uses this to determine the probability of fraudulent transactions? (Especially when one travels frequently).
@@Hhhhhh-sz9ud Oh, you think that your software switcher is like a hardware switcher? Modern cheaps are energy efficient. Asking your location once in a while doesn't change anything. The system still can use other ways to track your location (like cellular cells data) and it might drain your battery even more.

Recently bought an iPhone 12 after my 8plus was destroyed by a repair shop. 😩. New Phone was running slow and taking minutes to load. Watched your video and took your advice and presto….an iPhone that works at lightning speed. Bravo to you two.
I followed your last video and with turning off system customisation and significant locations, I lost my optimised battery charging? It no longer worked. Took me nearly 2 weeks to reset it and get it working again. If it’s off, how is it going to know if you are home every night and charging at the same place for it to work and learn the pattern?
Greatly appreciate the shared expertise and explanation on what/why to toggle off certain settings. Only had a few of these settings off. Turning all these off might solve the mystery why my iPhone batter drains down on days when not even being used. I couldn't figure out why on some days I hardly use my iPhone the battery drains down for seemingly no reason.
I really like the concept of this video, but does anyone know how effective all of these settings are? Like if all of these settings are switched off, how much battery do you actually save?
I can’t say for the newer phones but I’m still running my iPhone 6s Plus and since I turned all this off my phone has stopped dropping 5% battery life in a minute. Also I’m sure my battery has something to do with it since it’s max capacity is 80% but still I’ve noticed a huge difference in both battery life and phone speed.
Saving battery isn't the only issue. The issue is they don't need to know your every move 24/7, which is what you're giving them. You're being spied on day and night.
Just found your site . I joined. You are going a little to fast. Had a hard time keeping up. Had to keep repeating it. The apple website notes that “optimised battery charging” won’t work if you disable device management and frequent locations in the privacy location settings… is this true?
Probably yes. Because they use location services to determine your usual battery charging scenario. This is why I never mess with these settings. These guys basically tell this bullshit without any tests.
Used these videos to turn off unwanted services with the 14.7 ios. Great information guys 👍. Just updated to IOS 15 and nothing that I shut off before got turned back on.
Of course do some of these features use my data volume. That's what it's for: convenience. I actually want my photos to be uploaded / backed up to iClod as soon as I take them.
I have not internet in my house. I use mobile data to watch Apple TV in a pc screen. This have been working well for the past year. Suddenly. (February 2022) this ended. And I understand Apple has made it impossible for me to keep doing it. At Apple support they say there are more complaints for the same subject. And that they maybe will have to change this back? However, they cannot say when. Do you know any of this? Or what we can do to make them reverse it? Thank you 😊
Hi Hilda, that sounds frustrating! I wish I had a better answer for you, but we don't have any inside information about how Apple handles Apple TV+ streaming. You can always submit feedback, but I'm afraid it goes unheard. If you want to, the website is www.apple.com/feedback

Thank you I never could understand why pop up ads always seems to show things I'm searching for. 🤺
I use Siri, so I leave her on. She's a great help to me, but, dang, I found out other things I didn't even know that were on, that I didn't need on, so, it was great that I turned them off.
I have never in my life used Sir, but for some reason just never turned it off. nice
Not just the battery. Your privacy.
Thanks for the great tips! Most people don’t know all of what goes on in the background and hate how their phone runs down faster on each OS update.
You mean slower?
@@Monarch9704 No, Battery runs down faster.
@@lymancopps5957 I knew I wasn’t the only one who felt that. Battery life sucks after the updates ;(
Yeah-my battery doesn’t even last a day anymore and I don’t use my phone all that much!
I shall subscribe now, haha)
The only thing I left on is significant locations because I find certain aspects of this handy when using maps and calendar, and I also like how it associates photos with their locations.
Had the standards off already like the analytics etc - I usually always turn them off when setting up the phone (they actually ask you for a few things) but the rest was very helpful - some of the more “hidden“ things were still on - great video! 👌🏼
Significant locations has nothing to do with photos locations. That is the Camera and Photos location settings.

I just need a close up and a slow poke view .

Amazing tips thank you. Only thing is that your tips on data usage are more relevant to North America and Europe. Thankfully In India we have unlimited data with no capping so no issues
lucky
We have unlimited data plans here in Finland too. I have one myself, unlimited calls, text messages and data for about 25€ per month which is about 30 USD
Unlimited data is common in Europe too! It's really only the US who have aggressive caps across the market
@@Ben-yz4jh Canada, too! Worse, we probably pay more for cellular, internet and data than most other countries! ☹️
I also keep enabled the *Motion calibration & Distance* even though it looks to be working without it too
Thanks for this info!

For significant locations, there’s wording that says that turning it off will affect many Apple apps, maps, do not disturb when driving, CarPlay, Siri, calendar and photos.

I read through the comments before it started a little bit, and I decided I’m gonna take notes for when my new phone arrives 💀

I followed your last video and with turning off system customisation and significant locations, I lost my optimised battery charging? It no longer worked. Took me nearly 2 weeks to reset it and get it working again. If it’s off, how is it going to know if you are home every night and charging at the same place for it to work and learn the pattern?
I have the same question, thus why I won’t turn those two off
Yes, turning off all the things they recommend breaks functionalities lots of us want.
