Stop Your Android From SPYING On You!

  • David & David show you how to stop Android apps from spying on you. There are a lot of different Android settings that can restrict what apps can do and have access to on your Android.
Unfortunately, Androids aren't completely secure. In December 2022, Google had to release an update to fix more than 80 security vulnerabilities affecting Android phones. Four of these vulnerabilities were classified as "critical", meaning they were especially serious.
One "critical" vulnerability allowed hackers to run code on Androids using Bluetooth. The hackers were able to do this without even requesting permission to use Bluetooth on the device! When there's a serious security issue that could allow hackers or your Android to spy on you, make sure to download and install the latest security update.
The Sensors Off developer option turns off all sensors on your #Android, including the camera, microphone, accelerometer, and gyroscope. When Sensors Off is on, the Camera app won't open and your Android will display a message saying "security policy prevents use of camera."
However, big tech doesn't need to tap your camera or microphone to collect information about you. A lot of apps probably already have access to your location, contacts, text messages, and more. Head to Permission Manager and be intentional about which apps have access to other apps, services, and information on your Android.
We also recommend turning off Diagnostics & Usage data as well as Personalized Ads for both Google and manufacturer of your Android.
Next, make sure the apps on your Android don't have the ability to install other apps without your permission. We recommend turning off Install Unknown Apps for every app so you have control when an app wants to install another app on your Android.
Finally, head to Device Admin Apps to see which apps have been given administrative control over your Android. This control can include simple things like locking and unlocking the screen, but some apps could have the ability to erase all the data on your Android. Make sure any untrustworthy app doesn't have admin access you don't want it to have.

I've discovered that it doesn't always give a notification of a permission being removed. As I have discovered.
There are certain apps that I need permissions to remain, so I have to do through each one and disable that time not used thing. Which, isn't even accurate, because I've seen apps that I do use, all of a sudden a permission is removed!
However, disabling that check does seem to keep the perms on the apps I want.

Okay I just want to share my experience following most of the things said in this video.
So it's been like 2 weeks now since I watched this video and I gotta say... these things really did made my Galaxy S10e last a little longer. And it was noticeable for me ngl. I actually couldn't believe it especially yesterday while I was out for like almost 5 hours with mobile data turned, my Galaxy Watch4 & Galaxy Buds+ connected, listening to music at around 40-70% volume, Ambient mode on level 3 and they were mostly in my ears the whole time I was outside, and I came home with a battery of 33%.
What's impressive is that I haven't replaced its stock battery yet.
So thank you so much, David & David 🤘🤍👏

A very important developer option that was missed in this video is changing the default USB configuration. By default, android allows any USB connection effectively full access to your phone. This can mean plugging in your phone to a computer at work to get a quick charge can allow your work computer's security software to run a full scan of your device and install management apps, or even worse if you use a public charger at an airport or something then it can automatically install malware to your device. All this can be prevented by changing the default usb behavior to "charge only" and you tap a notification to change it when you'reat home on your personal computer and whatnot.
Also, it's notable with these settings changes that quite frequently android updates will re-enable many of these settings or install new apps and automatically hand over admin priviledges to the new app (when you can't disable system updates ability to install apps) so you really have to go through this process every few months to check what new BS android has done to your phone. One of the more recent android updates on samsung has made "smart switch" permanently installed, it cannot be disabled, and it has access to absolutely everything on your device, all of which was done without any warning to the user.

The problem with permissions management is you cannot turn everything off. Google has all apps linked to be dependent on each other so while some apps can have permissions removed many others cannot. Android/Samsung or Google should not be allowed to view photos, videos, messages or call logs from their end. This leads to doxxing, exploiting or other nefarious acts against users. All phones have a built-in separate chip that can make emergency calls without a sim. The developers option cannot bypass the speaker, camera or gyro sensors which still can be collected even without a sim. The only way to ensure your privacy is to throw your phone in a lake and never use one again

And I always think, any data being processed or sent off could mean extra battery life, even it a little.

I know, these apps & terms of service make me crazy.
I was on a YT channel & the man running the channel said to install Brave, so I do it & then I listen to the voice in my head telling me to read the terms of service, so I do & I learn they're so similar to Googles terms of service & that ticks me off so much I uninstall the program.
Now I have Gmail telling me I'm out of storage & I don't even use my Gmail acct because I had to make this account because they told me I had to because it is a new type of device (I still don't know why anyone that already has an email acct would have to open another email account, regardless of a new device, since I have no need for a 2nd email). I have 13 emails in my gmail acct. & Google wants me to buy more storage & I have no idea what's taking up all the storage. I have a lot of pictures & I've taken a lot of snapshots. I installed an SD card with 128GB of storage & I think my pictures are going there & I don't know if I erase the photos in my phone, if I would be also deleting them from my SD card. This Samsung Note 9 is making me crazy & Google is trying to push me off the cliff.
      Ugggh!
I'm sorry you're having as much aggravation dealing with your phone too. Maybe someone will help us to deal with our frustrations with our phones.
I'd love to have the help of Kurt Webe & Bill Binney 😊 these gentlemen know technology like the back of their hands.
I know there are others out there that know this technology, but I don't know where to find one or 2 to help me. I'm the type of person that if I watch someone doing the clicks & I write it down, I'm good at following instructions. I have trouble with the terminology. It's another language. I'm just starting to understand some of it now, but I still have so much more to learn. No one has the time today & everyone's trying to find a job that pays enough to survive on. The price of many goods are becoming ridiculously expensive & no one's getting increasing wages to compensate for the rising cost of necessary goods.
God help us to endure & survive.
      Amen 🙌.

To make this easier: When starting a new Android phone the first time, turn off *all* settings that could possibly send information about you (name, location, etc). This saves going through many sub-folders later. The only setting not covered by this method is "disable all sensors", for which the developer mode needs to be activated beforehand.

We need the inertia/orientation sensor to function for getting from portrait to fill screen mode when orienting the phone vertical to horizontal . However we can enable it or disable accordingly.

    Question for anyone who knows.
Since all these settings are controlled by software buttons and not hardware buttons, what prohibits apps from temporarily turning these settings back on without your knowledge?

    • @tess007
      @tess007 Рік тому +15

When you disable these options, you change the configuration of the operating system of your phone. All applications run on top of the operating system, so they don't have the power or privilege to change its settings. You could say that the operating system is what dictates what applications can do. Only the user can change its settings.

"You could say that the operating system is what dictates what applications can do. Only the user can change its settings"
So you're saying it's impossible for a virus to change the OS settings, only a hardware option (your fingers) can make those changes?

I am a huge security person and don't like my phone or anything I have being needlessly tracked so this was VERY handy in my controlling what big tech gets to see..

There's also a tile on Android devices where you can set data saver on. This allows the phone to restrict background data access while not on WiFi. In essence, you specify which apps DO have network permission while off WiFi and which ones don't. I do this with my SMS app, Google Voice, and any other app I need running regardless of where I am. Everything else doesn't have permissions to run while I'm not at home on WiFi.
This can be paired with "battery saver" where you can select which apps are allowed to use battery power. You can effectively kill any app from running while the phone is not plugged in this way. I use this one for pernicious and annoying apps that shouldn't run except when I want them to run. And, finally, you can go to each app and kill them if they're not intended to be running (e.g. a game should close when you close the app, yet it doesn't). You need to go in and kill/stop any app you don't want running. They're a little sneaky in that almost every app (except my banking app, it appears) will continue running in the background even if you close them or swipe close them. It's a lie, the apps are still running. Always check to make sure they're stopped.

Hi David & David, new to you! Android videos have been helpful. However, are you likely to do security issues for android 14 and above. In the UK, things are slightly different. One of the areas I've really struggled with is the permissions section access to camera, location etc. in that I don't really know what does need access to these. Such things as Google etc android intelligence etc I know you've covered it briefly. Thanks in advance David

Great video! If I shut off the permission for Google to access my texts in SMS, it's warning me that basic functions of my phone may not function as intended. Is this true? What functions may cease. I really don't want Google to have access to my texts. My personal conversations are none of their business. I do not want to shut off that permission without your explicit advice in case some important features of my phone are disabled. Thank, so much, for an amazing video! Helping to empower ordinary citizens by enabling greater privacy in an ever-changing world, where privacy has been almost completely eliminated. 🙂

I really appreciate you providing this information. I have changed permissions in permission manager and they keep changing them. Have had a extremely difficult time dealing with these issues.
I've went through 4 phones since July because I have been hacked. I ended up completely changing provider, number and new phone. They have me linked to my old account. Not only that, they are going through each and every app I had in my play store... Most have not been used for over 5 years. Requesting me to provide reviews for apps from 2016.
... Many more issues. Too much to go over now.

Try deleting unused apps and read my comment above about this vid. Please know rebooting sometimes re-initializes or re-installs "Pre-Programmed" applications originally installed on the device!!!!!! I have uninstalled progs with no problems and "for me" they have not re-appeared ! Please keep those things in mind with android and different devices! I dont think it is the provider as much as it is the progs on it ! Sometimes finding out WHAT APPLICATION? is causing the issue will correct anything you have gone through ! I hope this helps ! GB I have never had to go to "Developer" options to correct anything!
