I just got my trapping license this year. When I took the safety class the instructor for the state of Maine told us to go watch your videos. I've learned a lot.
Howdy. Thanks for all of your advice over the years. I’ve basically learned everything I know about fur handling from you. You have a gift of being well spoken and I appreciate how hard you work at this to keep the fading trapping industry alive and well. I would like to request that you do another PFH series on Bobcats. I am a trapper in Northern Idaho and would be willing to send you a nice cat or two (on the round) later this winter, if needed. Thanks, Regards ~A Dworshak, Idaho.
I have tried all the different ways available. Been trappin since I was 9 years old. Now 60. Painting with rustoleum from Walmart is cheap, easy and fairly long lasting. Some animals are gonna chew on the trap. So whatever you coat them with is going to wear off sooner or later. Painted traps are easy to touch up with a spray can. I do paint them in July and let them hang outside in the hot sun for at least a couple weeks and a couple rains. Lookin forward to seeing what you do with them and what you catch!😎
This year I used awesome straight to clean the new ones, then I sprayed with vinegar water. Few days later I paint dipped and was very pleased with the results. Lots of different ways and as long as it works for you it’s all that matters!!! Always love your content
I'm gonna order some of the 450's and some dog proofs and get back into trapping once deer season starts winding down. Been binge watching your videos and it gave me the itch to get back into it!! Great content, man!!
I was wondering do you have to dye and wax I know it helps but is it a must. I'm ordering some new traps soon to thin out some coyotes and bobcats and was just wondering
North American Trapper had a video on a trap prep a few months back. Would be great to see a few traps done with that stuff( don't recall the name of it) and get your opinion and maybe a catch or two. Thank you for your videos.
I have older USA made traps of many brands, like the Victor, BL and Diamond. For new traps I only buy USA made most all are MB’s. Body grip I use Belisle , MB and RBG As for dyeing I. Still use logwood and wax but a open to try something else.
so... I bought a half-dozen #4 bridgers a couple of years ago for beaver trapping. And the guy I bought them from boiled the grease off 'em, and spray painted 'em a flat khaki color, and I swear to you, I've NEVER had a trap hold up better, and be in EXACTLY the same shape at the end of the season as they were at the start. The way the spray paint held up was unbelievable. The other thing I've noticed that has held up wildly well are the NO BS K9 and Beaver XTremes. And I'd LOVE to see if there's a "DIY" way to do what they do.
I run the Duke pro series 650 for coyote and beaver. I’ve yet to miss a beaver with them when I set for front foot catch. Caught 188 beaver last year and should take 230 this year
Love the #5 LS ❤ LS are so under rated. Great update glad to see you are self made also! I don't know if you remember us from NTA but Christopher is about ready to get after his reds. Tight Chains brother!
I prefer dye and wax for anything set for k9’s. All my water sets get speed dip but I think next year I’m painting them, tried the brown speed dip and I’m just not happy with the color. There’s a lot of variables making a comparison between a trap that’s painted, dipped or dyed and waxed as being the superior way of prepping and I’m not convinced you can make a conclusive decision but I’ll be curious to see the results. Glad to see you still making videos, keep up the good work.
I'm old school. I always die and wax. But thinking of painting and full metal jacket + Just do it in plenty of time to let the painting smells disappear
I use new traps for a season, then the following fall, I like logwood crystals and wax. After watching your vids for years stu, I’ve dipped my toe into foot trapping.
Id like to see you paint some and them catch some coyotes on them to prove it can be done. For some reason there are those that think the paint smell will deter them
A gallon of paint mixed with a gallon of mineral spirits and dip the traps in. Generally I do it after a season of use though. New traps I just put them in the ground, nothing else done.
I ordered a dozen pro 550s from Bill Duke to try on my property got a great deal on them and already caught 2 coyotes. They set up just like some of the other more expensive traps. I’ve had these out for 2 weeks pulled them yesterday due to rain and mud had zero issues with the traps so far. They’re great solid traps for an affordable price.
Idk , I tried rust oleum & mineral spirits this year & I kinda of like it quick & easy , after a week the smell is gone . Also I’ve connected on coyotes this year
Can't wait til you're on the line. Tight chains. I would love to see a comparison wax/paint/ raw/ dyed. I'm no pro that's for sure. I do my own black walnut dye because i have two walnut trees in my yard, plus i like the smell. Tight chains
I have been using the Dakota line trap dip and full metal jacket on my predator traps the last few years and just dipping my water traps. On my new traps I just degrease them then dip in full metal jacket the first year. I boil them in lye to get the grease and oil off
Only thing I’ve found that is a little bit of a con to me is the pan tension straight out the box. Mine were above 5lbs and was causing me to miss opossum and skunk in my sets
Get a gallon of Zep odorless floor wax at a big box store and use as a dip. Lightly rust the traps before dipping. Dip and hang up to dry and then deploy them.
New subscriber. Can I go over ear buds pretty hard with my fleshing knife?? I'm afraid to tear em off but don't want hair slippage there either. Thanks!
I’d like to see you put some in an active cattle water trough to see how fast the rust… had a teacher at the Indiana trapper ED class tell me that’s the fastest way! Told me I’d be amazed how in just a 24hr soak… then I compare walnut to logwood dye to paint… look like ya got a change the pro/con several methods
I call the double long springs old schooling. They are all I have ever used for beaver caster mounds. I resorted to long spring for coyotes when the ground gets really frozen. Those beaver traps, just let them rust. I like rusty beaver traps, even my conibear, just rust.
I totally agree with you on the rust petina 330 conibears The brown is a natural match for wood and grass. Haven’t treated my beaver traps in 40 years. Still in great shape with strong springs
It would be nice to see a few dipped in Formula One or just black spray paint. Anything you do will be cool, though. I am looking forward to seeing your videos this year.
Get good oil based metal paint from sherwin williams. And thin it down to dip. Then when fully dry dip in full metal jacket. Best you are going to get.
Would like to see a comparison of some traps waxed, dyed. To some that are sprayed off and put in the ground, to see if it's really necessary to go through the time and expense of wax and dye
All I do with mine is wash in dawn soap let em dry dip em in liquid floor wax. When they’re rusted up let em sit in a bucket of vinegar water for a day or 2 spray the rust off let em dry dip in liquid floor wax.
Jason i was taught dye or paint is too preserve the traps keep it from rusting n such and wax is just to make them work smoothly n speed them up. I normally run new traps the first year without doing anything to them as it gets that new wore off so the dye stays on better

Yes I can't wait to know how you prep the traps. I'm somewhat of a new trapper and I would really like to know how to dye and wax them.
I love the collaboration in the trapper community, good on you Stu!
Looking forward to following along with you this season. Good luck!

I paint mine black and use Zepp floor wax to coat. Works great, even with the canines
Very true! Can't beat the Duke Pro Series traps! Good luck this season my friend!! Was good meeting you at the NTA!

Ready for the season. Excited to see how those traps work.

Thank you so much for your videos and sharing your knowledge.
I like the old wax dip myself. Great to see you on the Mullet Man's channel with that nice bull!!!!!
Dakota line trap and snare dip has always been really good
Paint half and dip half. I'd like to see that comparison with the dyed and waxed you already have ready.
Those beaver traps are great! And you got the badass part right, wish we could use them here in PA.
Awesome, can't wait! Thanks Stu! Dont forget to leave a few of them raw metal as a control experiment 😄
I was wondering do you have to dye and wax I know it helps but is it a must. I'm ordering some new traps soon to thin out some coyotes and bobcats and was just wondering
I am trying Speed Dye for the first time this year and have been spray painting my beaver traps w/ Rust-Oleum.
North American Trapper had a video on a trap prep a few months back. Would be great to see a few traps done with that stuff( don't recall the name of it) and get your opinion and maybe a catch or two.

I always use Rust-Oleum primer on all my beaver traps the brown/rust color blend's well and the paint holds up very well.
I’m ready for this season. Excited for your upcoming videos👌🏻

I believe they use a powder coat, it's hard to diy since it's baked on
@@adambiggums5473 I know. Just throwing out options 😁
Im trying rustolium rust reformer this year. I hope it holds up better than formula one. Still removing factory oil and letting them rust.
Nothing better than old school. Boil the same way as always and wax. 😊
Good to hear from you mr Stu,glad you’re back
I would like to see a comparison between paint and full metal jacket and dye and wax
Congratulations....on the new traps, and to Andrew. Lol
I run the Duke pro series 650 for coyote and beaver. I’ve yet to miss a beaver with them when I set for front foot catch. Caught 188 beaver last year and should take 230 this year

I always die and wax.
But thinking of painting and full metal jacket +
Just do it in plenty of time to let the painting smells disappear
I love the 550 and 650 duke's I need to pick up some 450s glad to see a new video and those to come

Id like to see you paint some and them catch some coyotes on them to prove it can be done. For some reason there are those that think the paint smell will deter them
I've been using logwood dye and wax since I was a kid. Love your coyote videos the best.
A gallon of paint mixed with a gallon of mineral spirits and dip the traps in. Generally I do it after a season of use though. New traps I just put them in the ground, nothing else done.
Looking forward to upcoming episodes!
Nice upgrades! Leve the longsprings for water trapping
Pro taught me to dye and wax in same pot same time

Didn't know you could use paint what kind of paint can I use?
Can't wait til you're on the line. Tight chains. I would love to see a comparison wax/paint/ raw/ dyed. I'm no pro that's for sure. I do my own black walnut dye because i have two walnut trees in my yard, plus i like the smell. Tight chains

I'd like to see a comparison between Painted, bare metal and dye wax to see if any has an advantage over the other.
Good to see a video!
Get a gallon of Zep odorless floor wax at a big box store and use as a dip. Lightly rust the traps before dipping. Dip and hang up to dry and then deploy them.
just picked up 2 doz of the 550's .
New subscriber. Can I go over ear buds pretty hard with my fleshing knife?? I'm afraid to tear em off but don't want hair slippage there either. Thanks!

Interested to hear what you have to report once you're pulling these regularly.
Stu will a 450 FJ pro series handle an otter in a dry land leg hold set?
I am a fan of rustoleum paint mixed with mineral spirits
Great video buddy you have some good stuff right there.
Make a dye from natural material from the back yard
No trap prep out the box:) lol let’s go!
What are the chances you'd send one of our old traps to a fan? 😁
It would be nice to see a few dipped in Formula One or just black spray paint. Anything you do will be cool, though. I am looking forward to seeing your videos this year.
I thought I watched you do a video on a one day prep on some Duke 550s or 650 a year or two ago?
I’m old school. I use walnuts to dye after some light rust
I think you should use your ol walnut dye. If for some reason they're not catching you know it's not because of paint or not dying etc
Speed dip and wax or walnut hulls and wax
Get good oil based metal paint from sherwin williams. And thin it down to dip. Then when fully dry dip in full metal jacket. Best you are going to get.
I’d paint ‘em. That’s what I’m doing with my new ones.
The 50/50 paint mineral spirits dip is by far the easiest
Trap them as they are new!:)
I paint and use thinned out mud brown camo paint
Water and vinegar to rust them, then speed dip and BAM they ready
Speed dip a few for comparison
Walnut staining or spray paint
looking forward to see what these catch
Ambush trap dye is great works good
My vote is to stick with what always worked for you. Walnut dye and wax, but I would like to see you experiment a little with the prep.
Full Metal Jacket speed dip. I've been using it for 10 years or so.
First season I would just use them as is.
I have a buddy that powder coats and I'm tempted to have him do one of mine just to see
Thinned Linseed oil, thinned rustoleum primer, control of unwashed, walnut n waxed - 6 each for the 450's
Tried & True. Walnut dye and wax.
Powder coating would be cool.
Dye and wax!
nice job.
Stick with walnut die and wax, glad to hear from you again
Longwood dye & FMJ
Wax and dye is to protect t the trap from corrosion more than anything
Just boil ‘em, paint ‘em and plant ‘em
ZEP floor polish
Paint and fmj vs dye and wax
Just cut the zip ties off and set em. Glad to see you back on you tube.
About time for a new video.
Why say they are ready to go out of the box if you have to do all the prep?
Speed dip
Spray paint and full metal jacket for land traps
Can’t wait to see those canine traps in the ground.
Use them out the box
Clean them and double dip in Full Metal Jacket
Speed Dip or paint
