That minimalism is exactly what I loved about the original 5, no hideous logo on the front and no overwrought distracting design, letting me focus on the software experience. In fact I would say the 5 is more aesthetic than many of this year's flagships.
+ Minkailu Lamin yep i agree. imo, a lot of phones these days go for metal design and having a Nexus 5 or 5x phones still stands out. Its basically a "low key" type of experience.
I honestly think this is how phones should come out every 2 years build on the OS & keep pushing software updates & within 2 years it'll actually be a big jump when buying the next iteration of the phone. Also I'm so over ppl talking about plastic & a "premium" feel I'm still rocking my Nexus 5 just got Marshmallow & still going strong
Really don't understand why most reviewers say this is a phone that won't break the bank. It's 400$ in US and between 430-500Euros in Europe. It is DEFINITELY expensive.
+CraciunAlexandruGh Cause its USA website mainly oriented around USA and its users. You expect The Verge to make a review for example a China exclusive phone just cause you will go to Chinese site and get one? As an example
+CraciunAlexandruGh first of all, you should understand that most reviewers of the phone are from the US (I think isn't possible to buy it outside USA just yet). In the US, it costs between $379 and $439. In Europe or Latin America (I'm from Argentina), almost nothing they say is true. The Verge doesn't analyse each market. Taking that into account, their quotes shouldn't be taking literally. When they say "it won't break the bank" they actually say "for that price you get lots of specs", which is true, the Nexus 5X gives you 80% of the what a Galaxy S6 or an iPhone 6S gives you for what? $200, $300 less? You don't need to read these reviews literally, they aren't AnandTech.
+Alejandro L. Zuvic Not to argue semantics and meaning, but that is not what breaking the bank means. I do understand your point though. However, I think it is not such a great phone price/performance wise. One example is the Galaxy S5. It has arguably a better cpu and gpu, same ram, probably better camera (or at the very least is on par), microSD slot, great screen. This is why I am sensing a disappointment in the Nexus Line. When the Nexus 4 came out, it had hardware few could match for a killer price. Now...the 5X has medium to high specs for a price the flagships of the past can match.....and the Asian phones can probably beat.
Finally a relatively fair verge review. But I think they should finally just admit that this phone is better than the iPhone at a much lower price. Why stay "up there with the best" and "where it should be" when it's so much cheaper and atleast equal?
This peice of garbage is not better than the iPhone, even the Samsung exynos has trouble keeping up with the a9 processor, and we know Qualcomm shitdragon 808 is complete garbage compared to the Samsung chip, so kits not better than the iPhone, in fact it's not even competitive.
Not for sure if this matters to anyone, but I've watched just about all the most popular nexus 5x reviews and this is by far the best most professional to the point review video-wise. Well done with the review sirs/ma'ams.
This was actually a nice, balanced review! I love the cinematic shots, and when you're not super biased, or comparing it to the iPhone, you get to the point. Thumbs up!
I got the Nexus 5x largely because of this review and I'm still using it in 2018! Phone has held up really well and continues to get better thanks to continuous Google updates. I'll be upgrading to one of the Pixel models soon but I'll be sad to see this one go. Please can The Verge go back to more reviews like this?! Camera work is great and I love the fact a lot was shot outdoors. Plus it's not 10 lightyears long to watch 🐺
I honestly think the Nexus 5 was one of the best designed phones ever made, followed by the iPhone 4/4s. I'm glad they came back to its minimalist design.
+MrMano54 +MrMano54 funny thing is I'm an iPhone user and it still drives me insane that they use that. Just waiting until the day that deem android worthy to switch too- and it will happen. I'm mostly just waiting on hardware I like. Unless I switch to a carrier that supports Windows 10 phones... ;p
+MrMano54 the iPhone is far from perfect. Man- aesthetically (stock) android is WAY prettier than iOS. I LOVE what they did with lollipop. Just not bad enough to leave my small(ish) iPhone.
A surprising positive feature in 2015: "The phone is usable in ONE hand without issues", haha. But of course they found something totally subjective to squeeze in as a negative point. How does the phone look "generic"? The front is the screen, and the back is a stylized cover without any fancy features or fashion statements that I never asked for. I appreciate that.
people are way too harsh about the build, I just got mine yesterday and up until then I'd only seen it in review videos online, never in person, but honestly this phone feels great I'm so glad I ended up with this, people put far too much emphasis on "premium materials" and often don't stop to actually think about the phone's real world aesthetics, that said the rest of the review was pretty spot on, I just think it's physically much nicer then I was led to believe.
I would like to emphasize on your design comments. It has an exquisitely smart design, making the phone durable. I've dropped it from 6ft+ (because I have a habit of tossing my phone in the air) for two years. The plastic design is great because when the phone takes the impact, the cover pops off SLIGHTLY, which is easily clicked back on. Screen will always go undamaged but there are bound to be some small scars. Although my Nexus5 DID finally crack... I was biking at 25mph when my phone slipped out of the universal phone holder (that phone holder was terrible) and dropped. Obviously, it cracked, but SURPRISINGLY, the cracks are not dramatic. If you look at the phone at an angle, the cracks are very visible, but regularly, it is easily ignored. So in conclusion, best phone design, maybe other phone manufactures should learn.
Coming from 2 Nexus 5, i just got my 5x for 269€ (16gb model) and i found it amazing! I found the performance pretty great ( it actually improves over time ) and the battery life is pretty good, it lasts me 1.5 - 2 days (not a heavy user). Overall i would recommend this phone to everyone who wants to know what android really is and needs a phone that can handle everything.
I have been seeing lots of things about the 5x having yellow tinted screen problems compared to other devices. Have or did you notice this on yours as well, or is it just a lemon here and there.
The 5X doesn't feel cheap. I've owned flagship phones - Apple, Samsung, HTC - all the way up until I got the 5X, and this is exactly how a good smartphone should feel. Not so heavy that it weighs your pocket down like a brick, not so big that it's a clownshoe, and not made of goddamn aluminium - which is far more damage-prone than polycarbonate. Quite apart from that, why the hell are people paying the best part of a grand for a phone that they'll replace in a year? It's just a phone; we done been suckered, kids.
i think after a bit of time without the case the fingerprint will start getting scratches and then slowly stop working, my worst fear is one day it just does not work
If the nexus 5x was released in 2013 or 2014, it would have blown people away. But this is 2015, the year of the budget phones. There is so much competition in the $300-400 category and with a 1080p screen and 2gb ram, the nexus 5x is just "meh"
Just bought the 5x to replace my Samsung Galaxy S6. The GS6 is awesome but I love pure Android. I had the Nexus 5 and that's one of the only phones that I actually kept for a year, I passed on the Nexus 6 because it was huge and too expensive for what you got. I was tossing around the idea of getting a 6p but it was back-ordered and I like the smaller screen of the 5x.
+The Tape I've only had it for a little over a day but, the speakers aren't the best. They're a bit too heavy on the high pitched range for me, it's not very "full" sounding. Sometimes they don't seem like they get loud enough for when I use the speaker phone, I really wish they were dual front facing speakers. I don't notice any lag so far, 2gbs of ram seems to be enough for me. Admittedly I don't games that much, I'm a kinda light user.
+The Tape yeah I like it a lot so far. I'm a big fan of minimalist pure Android, I'm digging the 90 days free for Google music (which includes UA-cam Red).
is it worth it i really like the nexus 5 im using a sony xperia z1 right now im thinking of upgrading next year should i go for the nexus 5 or 5x or do u recommend any other android phones, i like a good camera and performance
Firstly, why do all the reviewers keep going on about the Nexus not being a top tier phone, just because it's made of plastic. The plastic design feels light and the specs of the phone are very comparable to other top tier phones. Secondly, I can see a lot of people complaining about the price of the device euros. I own an iPhone 6S and a Galaxy S6 edge, both of which cost me around £750. So I don't see why anyone would complain about the 5X being €479. The Nexus 5X is as good as those other phones. Pure android performs much better than the bloated Touchwiz. it doesn't need an octacore processor or 3gb of ram, the same way the iPhone doesn't need it. you get all android updates as soon as they are released. 5.2" 1080p is more than enough, and to me difference is negligible. Battery life is superior on the 5X, the camera whilst not best in class, is up there. And it has the fast finger print scanner! So why all the hate for the 5X? Best android experience I've had all year.
I dunno but I think it looks great. It's google-ish type of minimalistic. Matte plastic finishes also seem better to hold for me than aluminum ones that feel like I couldn't grip them too hard. I like how it doesn't need to stand out but still looks way better than more than half of the other phones out in the market. Not all phones should be enclosed in some aluminum unibody with rounded edges and there's this misconception that everybody wants this same "premium feel" to their phones or that maybe it is the only way "premium" feels like. If I had to compare this to any iphone in terms of looks, at first glance, this actually looks like it can handle a fall or survive my grip or without a case while not looking bulky.
I actually enjoyed the material and the bill design of the Nexus 5 it was different and was something I actually enjoyed holding in my hand my only problem with that phone was battery life that was all
When he mentions that it feels like a generic, reference phone, I personally, feel that, that is what all Nexus phones are! The plain, original flavor, main Android phone. And you know what? That's what I want.
Nexus 5 was actually (and still is) the best designed device! They should make the 5x the same shape adding some better guts in it... I hate the volume rocker on the right. You can´t printscreen with one hand for example.
I'm thinking of buying this phone Nexus 5X 16GB, but I have 1 burning question! This this "16 GB" INCLUDING the OS ? Or EXCLUDING the OS?? Meaning: do I have an entire 16 GB to use for my stuff? or is that a lot LESS THAN 16 GB??
I got the 5x for my goddaughter for Christmas at the Google reduced price of $329. After reviews like this calling it cheap feeling I was kind of expecting that. when I opened it though , that wasn't my opinion. the device felt good and quality. sure it's plastic but plastic doesn't mean cheap feeling. This is coming from someone who also owns the 6p. sure it doesn't have that metal feel but the 5x doesn't feel cheap to me. I do wish it had a amoled screen and 3gb of ram though
Guy says the build is not premium, but readily admits it's easier to hold than the 'premium' S6, plus it's more durable too. It's time to get past the plastic hate, guys. Ain't a fucking thing wrong with plastic.
The Nexus 5 does not look like a generic phone. It doesn't look close to what the iPhone 6 or Galaxy S6 look like, but it has a really nice, sleek design to it. I agree that the Nexus 5X does look generic. It's like they didn't even bother making it look nice. It looks like those generic phones that you see on the prepaid aisle at Walmart. It feels just as cheap too. When it comes to the 5X, it's literally all personality and no looks.
+Nishit Raj Hey Nishit, battery life is much better in my opinion. It's not hard to beat the Nexus 5 battery life though tbh. It should last a day, just about.
Dunno about you guys but i like the "boring" look of the Nexus. It has a minimalist touch to it. Good review by the way.
+Minkailu Lamin The stormtrooper edition rocks. Clean and professional.
nexus 5 2013 looks sleek and i own it and have never regretted it once
That minimalism is exactly what I loved about the original 5, no hideous logo on the front and no overwrought distracting design, letting me focus on the software experience. In fact I would say the 5 is more aesthetic than many of this year's flagships.

+blakdrop That is why I love Motorola devices, too.
The Nexus 5 might be aging but it aged like fine wine 😎✊🏿
I honestly think this is how phones should come out every 2 years build on the OS & keep pushing software updates & within 2 years it'll actually be a big jump when buying the next iteration of the phone. +Amine Bashir LOL. This guy.
+Dave Dean (Trouserdeagle) thanks! :)
MKBHD: best tech channel on UA-cam

This phone's design was so ahead of its time.
In 2018, still worth it or not?
Google Should Even Make A Nexus 4X
👌👌👌
+LAKSHAY SHARMA mmm the days
lol yeah let Samsung make that
+Milk Fuentes same
It's not every day that I can say this but this was a good review. Keep it up Verge!

+Edward Johnston IT'S HALF THE FUCKING PRICE
+Edward Johnston Settle down, Beavis.
+Edward Johnston Any midrange chinese smartphone can compete with the iphone, at a fraction of the price so...
+Edward Johnston Haha I'd say you make some good points, except you don't.
Whatever camera/lenses you guys are using are absolutely stunning.
Hey, at least you can unlock it when its facing down.. (:
For what that's worth 😩
+Gol. D Rodger the fingerprint sensor is so much better on the back
+Adrian Macias at least it doesn't cost as much as an iPhone
+Adrian Macias lmao like what would you do after that
Remember when everyone talked smack about the placing of the fingerprint sensor on the HTC One Max?
Not for sure if this matters to anyone, but I've watched just about all the most popular nexus 5x reviews and this is by far the best most professional to the point review video-wise. Well done with the review sirs/ma'ams.
The Verge utilizes some really groovy background music, I'll give them that.
This review is a fair one. And I like it. Keep it up Verge.

Great review, it's good to see a review where the phone is not constantly compared with the iPhone you love
Great video Verge !!! Well done ! As always 😂😍
Hey, 2020 here 😭✌️
I honestly think the Nexus 5 was one of the best designed phones ever made, followed by the iPhone 4/4s.
I'm glad they came back to its minimalist design.
Definitely not top of the line build quality, but it's a really solid phone for the price.
It's a good phone but is a shame that in Italy it will cost 479 euro
ce la pigliamo sempre in quel posto noi..
Dany Reyes eh si
+Lorenzo Spada hola
+Lorenzo Spada i guess bosses are going to pay salary with nexuses now
Import it?
the verge does the best reviews
haven't watched the review yet went straight to the comments was this review iPhone biased?
+needmoneynow2 Actually, no.
Nope. I was fairly surprised at both the nexus reviews they just posted.

Great review guys
Fast & Concise review!
2:47 that building is so thin!! whats in that building?
What's the name of that narrow building in the background at 1:18? I've seen it before somewhere...
Flatiron building
pleasantcrew Thank you.
+Minkailu Lamin in spiderman?
Parodyst1 Yeahhh and in tons of other shows.
Yh it's a building in Liberty City, I dream of going there one day my cousin Roman lives there.
But my question is: Does it have a Super power saving mode?

32 gig variant should have been with 3Gb ram
can anyone tell me where in the world 1:21 is? Which city?
I have been seeing lots of things about the 5x having yellow tinted screen problems compared to other devices. Have or did you notice this on yours as well, or is it just a lemon here and there.
Also does Doze work when it's in your pocket? Or does it need to be stationary?
I like both the Nexus 5X and the 6P, both are great and beautiful
The 5X doesn't feel cheap. I've owned flagship phones - Apple, Samsung, HTC - all the way up until I got the 5X, and this is exactly how a good smartphone should feel. Not so heavy that it weighs your pocket down like a brick, not so big that it's a clownshoe, and not made of goddamn aluminium - which is far more damage-prone than polycarbonate. I always loved this Phone and fast forwarding to 2023 I felt the same with Nothing Phone.
I currently have an iPhone 4s and want to get a new phone. Would this be a good choice?
SuperQ32 Yes, this phone is amazingly smooth. I bought it two weeks ago and love the experience so far.
Does the white in the display look yellow in real life
iPhone 6s billboard in 2:53, gotta love the irony :P
Should I upgrade to Nexus 5X from LG G3??
yeah
amazing review
If the nexus 5x was released in 2013 or 2014, it would have blown people away. But this is 2015, the year of the budget phones. There is so much competition in the $300-400 category and with a 1080p screen and 2gb ram, the nexus 5x is just "meh"
is it that the screen of nexus 5x have yellow tint while it is on white screen?
If the camera app isn't to your liking, get manual camera
great review
this was a pretty good review actually
Can it record 1080p 60fps video?
How do you get the battery percentage in the top right corner?
I have a Moto X 2014. Should I "upgrade" to the Nexus 5x?
does the nexus 5x use a micro or nano sim card for t-mobile?
What sort of emotions do you want to invoke when picking up a phone?
Just bought the 5x to replace my Samsung Galaxy S6. The GS6 is awesome but I love pure Android. I had the Nexus 5 and that's one of the only phones that I actually kept for a year, I passed on the Nexus 6 because it was huge and too expensive for what you got. I was tossing around the idea of getting a 6p but it was back-ordered and I like the smaller screen of the 5x.
How is the speaker ?
Not comparing only your experience.
Do you have lag sometimes?
+The Tape I've only had it for a little over a day but, the speakers aren't the best. They're a bit too heavy on the high pitched range for me, it's not very "full" sounding. Sometimes they don't seem like they get loud enough for when I use the speaker phone, I really wish they were dual front facing speakers.
I don't notice any lag so far, 2gbs of ram seems to be enough for me. Admittedly I don't games that much, I'm a kinda light user.
Shad Kerr thank you for the reply , I'm also OK with ram but I'm a heavy media user,so I listen too much music .
But other things are OK,right ?
+The Tape yeah I like it a lot so far. I'm a big fan of minimalist pure Android, I'm digging the 90 days free for Google music (which includes UA-cam Red).
Shad Kerr I'm enjoying it so much !
I have a question : When the trial expires can you access YT Music?
Micro or Nano SIM ?
front facing speaker quality?
is it worth it i really like the nexus 5 im using a sony xperia z1 right now im thinking of upgrading next year should i go for the nexus 5 or 5x or do u recommend any other android phones, i like a good camera and performance
The Htc one A9 is cool,5X is good,LG G3,Z2,Note 4
thanks thinking of the note 4
Jack Neilson the Note 4 will get Android 6.0 and has great camera , RAM,processor ,nice choice!
did nexus 5x has led notification
Does the white color of this phone get yellowish by time and usage ?
So according to the last line: 5X sucks, but the 5 sucks more so you'll love the 5X. Seems legit...

5.2" 1080p is more than enough, and to me difference is negligible. Battery life is superior on the 5X, the camera whilst not best in class, is up there. And it has the fast finger print scanner!
So why all the hate for the 5X? Best android experience I've had all year.
I'm probably reviewing this phone on my channel too
I upgraded to the Nexus 5X from my ancient Nexus 4, but now I feel my thumb aching :(
Nexus 5x or lg g4 ?
Give me the damn Nexus 7x now. I cannot find any decent replacement for my Nexus 7(2013) and it is too slow for web browsing.
I dunno but I think it looks great. It's google-ish type of minimalistic. Matte plastic finishes also seem better to hold for me than aluminum ones that feel like I couldn't grip them too hard. My htc desire 610 died on me. This is looking like a great replacement. I got it for 235 bucks. In three days I'll have it!
When he mentions that it feels like a generic, reference phone, I personally, feel that, that is what all Nexus phones are! The plain, original flavor, main Android phone. And you know what? That's what I want.
old nexus 5 was way more stylish.
I can get the 5X or Note 4 for the same price, wich one?
Nexus 5 was actually (and still is) the best designed device! They should make the 5x the same shape adding some better guts in it... I hate the volume rocker on the right. You can´t printscreen with one hand for example.
would love to see LG Nexus 5x up agains Huawei Honor 7
I want to trade my nexus 6 for a 5x what do you think is this an upgrade or down grade
except camera the 6 outshines the 5X
Haha, did anyone catch the iPhone 6S billboard in the background?
Design shouldn't be talked about at all in a review. Maybe in your opinion the design was a negative point but I personally love this design.
I'm thinking of buying this phone Nexus 5X 16GB, but I have 1 burning
question!
This this "16 GB" INCLUDING the OS ? Or EXCLUDING the OS?? Meaning: do I
have an entire 16 GB to use for my stuff? or is that a lot LESS THAN 16

you will have around 13 GB
"longing to upgrade your aging Nexus 5"
LOL I'm still on the Nexus 4! :)
Give me a reason why I would choose this phone over the Moto X Pure.
THIS PHONE IS FUCKING AMAZING
Heya, Terrific! waste blink What's your opinion about that
*"my ageing nexus 4." That's right.. still got that nexus 4 baby. hopefully upgrading in christmas..
Why should a phone evoke an emotion when you pick it up?
lol
which one should I buy. Nexus 5x or iphone se
I want good battery life, camera and also performance
The Verge is sure making some good review videos after the Apple thing, quite like
is going from lg g3 to nexus 5x a down grade?
No. You'll get longer support.
Rony Mishchuk for how long?
The 5x is better in everything.
until september 2017 for major software updates and them a bit more for security updates
Watching this on my 5x
2 days now.. can u gimme an insider info on its battery life? I am sick of my N5 battery life
+Nishit Raj Hey Nishit, battery life is much better in my opinion. It's not hard to beat the Nexus 5 battery life though tbh. It should last a day, just about.
TheAKiani thanks
Still your 5X is alive?
