Thanks for watching! Would you guys and gals consider using an eGPU with your Mac? Why or why not? Let me know if you have any questions in the comments and I'll try to get to them. You can also reach out on IG and Twitter.
thank you for video and info
can you please make multiple egpu chained benchmark please.
9to5Mac plz make the MacBook Air video plzzzzz :D
Does the Mac Mini use the egpu for everything? I have a dual monitor setup. 1 1920x1200 Dell, and a 4k Dell monitor connected to my Mac Mini, and noticed that the 4k monitor lags/stutters a bit when resizing windows, and zooming in google maps.
It does not do that on the 1920x1200 monitor.
WIll an egpu improve performance for these things, or will the monitor just use the internal graphics on the Mac Mini for things like google maps in a browser?
If you’re outputting to an external display via the eGPU, all graphics should be driven by the eGPU.
Will look into that.
See, when I heard that price tag, I thought I clearly must have missed the part about it shipping with 2 Vega-64’s in crossfire.
Hilarious. 😂
LOL, good point.
Yes its high price is a bit daunting but damn good looking for my office
Do you suggest the Sonnet or the Razor X for an eGPU enclosure? I was expecting you to day Razor but in this video you referenced the Sonnet. I'm looking for the right option for FCPX
Thanks 9to5. I have been waiting for a review on this and you delivered. Your eGPU content has been incredible from the get go.
Thank you for tuning in.
Seconded!
thank you for this informative, honest review.
Good solution, but rediculous price!
I’d like to see more videos about egpu workflow for editing video on Final Cut Pro, Premier or DaVinci Resolve. Keep up the great videos!!
Hey Alejandro, I plan on it for sure. Thanks.
OK, it’s a worthwhile performance increase, but why can’t Apple make a box with internal slots like a real computer instead of forcing people to improvise overpriced workarounds?
I second this as to what Alejandro said
Me too!
@@richardbriscoe8563 Apple are now an appliance maker. IE, Non upgradeable FMCG goods, like watches, jewellery, toasters, microwave ovens, pop tarts* etc. You keep em a few years, then discard them and buy another. Just got a Mac min 2018, superb, but while you can upgrade the RAM, you cannot the SSD. Bonkers! I'm stuck with 256 GB, could not afford more. But I may one day. So Tim's got me over a log, I'll have to buy another mini next year! *Not really.
Hi! I recently bought the BMD eGPU Pro for $649!!! in new condition no less. Works great for my Intel i7 Mac mini. Certainly worth it more than the original $1200. Great review.
great review as always bro
Thanks for watching.
A review to see how the eGPU pro works with the MacBook Air would be great!
Also, a comparison of the Vega 20 internal graphics vs the eGPU Pro would be useful to determine if an external graphics would be worth the investment vs performance.
Either ways, love your content and keep it up!
Sold! Thank you, great advice
Nicely done, unbiased review,
thanks eGpu Guru !!!! keep them coming
I got a razer core x and a Vega 64.
The razer core x is 299.99 and the Vega 64 is going for 399.99
This is cheaper and I went and got a usb hub for the keyboard mouse camera mouse mat and speakers to connect
Three cables for my Razer Blade 14 2016 or two cables for my MacBook Pro 2018.
would this configuration
work on a 2017 macbook pro ?
i edit on Davinci Resolve and don’t know much about EGPU’s
michael weitz I would like to know the same answer and I use FC for 360 VR
Same here . My 2019 Mac is struggling with 4K . I don’t know if this would help ??
Wait... what?! 1200$ and only ONE Vega 56 inside? I bought last week Gigabyte Vega 56 for hackintosh and it cost me only 320€. That 1200 price is insane...
Yes. Nowadays Apple things seems to be SCAMS... Ok there so improvement and it's well designed. But it's just a box of metal, with a $300 outdated GPU inside with some controllers, a power unit and coolers... And the perf are limited on purpose for silence and all is soldered inside !!
Even with the cost pf making it and the gain for the company it's way under the $1000 tax !!!
And there is not all the connectivity !!! Yeah thunderbolt you know...
Not upgradable, not expandable, not repairable, all soldered, overpriced and very soon obselete... The Apple's way...
It's ridiculously overpriced. I bought a used Razer Core X and Vega 64 for £540 here in the UK. Buy the Blackmagic eGPU Pro at this price and you're literally throwing away money.
iMac 5k 2019 have Vega 48 building now, Maybe this is why Apple don’t use Their brand name to make this think. If this is good, Apple gain, if this is bad, black magic shit !
@@christophefolio91
What do you mean "apple things"? This is a 3rd party company
Great video!!!! I NEED THE MACBOOK AIR + EGPU PRO + PREMIERE PRO REVIEW VIDEO
MacBook Air is too slow for Premiere Pro and an egpu is not going to solve it's primary problem: the 7w CPU is simply too slow. Get a MBP instead.
I just realised that blackmagic is the company that developed the vide editing software DaVinci Resolve!
Yep. Resolve is awesome.
Price is outrageous. Apple has hobbled the internal graphics of the already expensive mac mini (partly to lack of case redesign), and offered the eGPU in its place. I hope this won't be a trend.
Thanks for the nice review!!! How long it takes when you take your MacMini to sleep mode until the fans stop working, any issues with sleep mode?
Thanks, as always amazing
You’re welcome. Thank you for watching
I am forwarding this video to a buddy of mine that works in a pro environment. I think this would be awesome if paired with a Vega 56 in an iMac Pro. Jeff, video idea??? Would, both GPUs be used more efficiently?
As much as I do love the performance of a custom PC running Mac OS. An actual Mac computer is more reliable and they "CAN" come with that wonderful 3 year "Apple Care" warranty. So, I would suggest this for people that are running a production company and need the performance.
Great video. What would you recommend: Sonet Breakaway Box or RazerCore X
thanks for the excellent review! There aren't any out for the Pro version.
How quite is it compared to the non-Pro version when idle or in low usage ? What is about that coil whine issue i'm reading here and there?
Excellent review and tests. Could you do a video on testing the BM eGPU reg and pro with an older Macbook Pro. Like a high end 2012/13 model? Just wondering if its worth the cost of upgrading to a newer laptop or just getting a eGPU. Thanks again.
thank you for the review of the Blackmagic eGPU, but can this work with the latest iMac 2019?
Here is the problem. If you insist upon the very idea of acquiring an eGPU with the huge expectancy of a huge achievement for getting higher performance and graphics, I need to clarify that it will cost a lot than you have expected since you also need a monitor. And it will cost a lot. eGPU itself will cost you $1200, and you also need to buy a monitor that will add an additional $200 at least. However, if you simply build a PC, it will cost you the same amount but you will achieve much more graphic performance since thermal limitations are way more than you can basically reach.
is the CPU from the macbook going to be loaded more due to eGPU setup with the same app workflow? I'm concerned of heating
Thanks for the review. I guess benefits for Lightroom and Photoshop are minimal/inexistent due to the lack of support of Metal in Adobe’s software. Correct?
Great video. Which external EGPU would you recommend to use with Mac mini I7 for streaming and recording with Ps4 pro?
Would like to see it for internal graphics
thanks to your videos I bought a Mac Book Pro + Razercore X. Today I was able to run DaVinci Resolve Studio 15 on Windows 10 (bootcamp) on two different gpus at the same time (OpenCL) Vega20 and GTX1080Ti.
gabriele gelfo I’m guessing your Mac 15” is the top, with custom Vega 20 graphics, and ou added the the razercore x with a 1080TI, but what I don’t understand is why ou would run davinci resolve in boot camp instead of macOS
I’ve worked with the first black magic egpu and loved it for final cut performance and my 5K ultra fine display. I edit weddings and just wondering if it is worth the upgrade and the pricepoint. I return it because I saw this announcement.
And will even the iMacPro take its advantage when using DaVinci to the max?
All Im waiting for is AMDs Pro Render Plug-in for Modo to pull the trigger on one of these.... or winning the lottery for a 2019 Mac Pro.
Will you show how to works with MacBook Air 2018?
How does Lightroom Classic 2019 run using this and a 5K iMac 2017 w highest processor? Right now Lightroom is incredibly slow, having to wait 2-3 seconds after adjusting color, adding actions for each and every shot bogs down my workflow and something like this would be incredible for it.
Thank you for the video. It's very informative.
I am new to this technology. I am editing a lot of Photoshop and CAPTURE ONE application. Do you think Blackmagic eGPU work well with these software? I have a entry level of MacBook Pro 13".
I'd like to see the MacBook air performance with the egpu. I'm curious about the rendering speed difference between 2018 ipad pro and 2018 touch bar MacBook pro base model. I know there are many variables when comparing these quite different devices, interested on your take! Thanks.
Spot on review. This product is unique, in that, it isn't about being the best - if this eGPU check's off your priorities of wants - then there's no other eGPU that can match it - it's the best.
How does it work with MacBook Pro and 360 VR stitching, time wise ?
While I love the concept of eGPU, and probably will buy one in the future, I'm still a little bit confused as to the difference of a eGPU in comparison with an internal built GPU. Is thunderbolt 3 that fast that e vs i won't make a difference? Do you expect it to change in the near future? Love the video's as always!
Nicolas Verachtert Overall e vs i doesnt make a difference. What some people overall is this is an expensive dock as well. It has special 85 watt PD power delivery for the macbook, its own separate fan and case so your computer should stay cooler, plus added USB 3 hub and extra ThunderPort 3 powered hub (which can be a few hundred on its own) and it is all-in-one so it can be shared at home or business whereas internal is limited to just the one it is in.
What video codecs are you going to and from for your render results? Not all video files render the same just announcing a 4k timeline isn't helpful.
I would like to know about accelerating apps on the built-in screen.
Hi thanks for the video, I would like to see comparison between black magic EGPU pro vs radeon pro wx9100 with razor x if possible
Okay, will try to make that happen soon.
Great review, thanks. I have a question for you to try out. How do you hook two 4K LG monitors to the eGPU pro? The display port to usb-c cables don’t provide power so it won’t turn the LG on.
The BlackMagic has a DisplayPort 1.4 port to LG4k DP and a HDMI 2.1 to LG4k HDMI. The eGPU pro is powered on its own and the LG monitor has its own power. Question is a bit confusing??
yes please do a MacBook Air test that would be great!!!!
so, for LG 5k2k display and Mac mini 2018, is there any alternative? What concern me the most is whether other eGPU may pull the resolution down from 5k2k to anything worse.
iMac 5k with egpu review please??
I ended up going with a Vega 64 and the nvdia Core x, love it so far! Vega 64 is like $300 to $350 now 😆
Not bad!
Not in Canada....too bad
*Good deal!!*
where did you get the price of $300?
Nice. Are you able to use it with ur internal screen?
Will this EGPU be compatible with Windows running through Parallels on a 2018 Mac mini?
what about playback smoothness in FCPX , Premiere and DR ? with native 4k footage from DSLR ?
Can you try a test with multiple egpus with an imac pro with resolve? Just curious what kind of performance increase you get with more than 2 gpus. Thanks for all these videos!
We did already! Watch: ua-cam.com/video/cLnT3XFbyKk/v-deo.html
Price is INSANE! And getting a tiny 0.5m thunderbolt cable is just ridiculous...
I am looking a way to connect 3 LG 5K monitors to a Mac mini. Will it allow me to do it?
The lack of upgradability is not that big of a problem actually, as you will sell your BM eGPU Pro on the second hand market and buy an updated version with a newer card (with the only downside that BM will most likely lag behind in releasing updated versions).
This is just like when you would have to sell your old graphics card (though not the enclosure) with any other eGPU upgrade.
Apple tech tends to keep a high resell value and maybe that will be the same with this Apple-affiliated eGPU.
want to see it with the macbook air 2018
How it looks inside
How about this device on the iMac 5k 2017?
I’m a fcp editor.
$1200 for a Vega 56... wtf.
S. yup, but it is also half a mac... includes USB dock, graphics ports, case, fan, power delivery for macbook.
I like the way you say eGPU...
Thanx for the video. Would you recommend it to boost video performance of my system: iMac Pro (2017) - macOS Big Sur
3,2 GHz 8-core Intel Xeon W
64GB 2666 MHz DDR4
Radeon Pro Vega 56 8 GB
Thank you for your advice
9to5Mac Would you recommend razor core X egpu with mac mini for entree gaming
such as rocket leagure, roblox, league of legends etc?
I want to drive the LG 5k2k (native res) and a second monitor (2560x1440) with this egpu.... any issues?
Are there even any VR games for Mac?
Is that possible to make this enclosure have some special feature like 3 tb3, one for input and 2 output ? So this can power 2 LG 5k display?
CRIKEY!
I just received mine.
Ran Geekbench 4 with Macbook Air (Late 2018):
- MacBook Air (Late 2018) AMD Radeon RX Vega 56 Metal Mac OS X 64-bit 160515
Even faster on Windows 10:
- HP Spectre x360 Convertible 15-bl0XX Radeon RX Vega OpenCL Windows 64-bit 177684
Does the new version of Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Classic 8.4 Camera Raw 11.4 take advantage of BlackMagic eGPU? How much does is boost performance for editing, and raw to DNG conversion?
More EGPU Content!
Drinking game: take a shot every time you hear the word GPU
no longer available??
Thanks for this. Really helpful. I would really like to know if this is faster for Resolve driving an external LG 5K display, than the new MacBook Pro with Vega 20 GPU.
Sadly I wasted a lot of money on an eGPU with a Vega RX 64, in the hope that it would work well with the LG 5K, but it seems that unless the display is actually connected to the Vega RX 64, you get very little benefit from the GPU. Playback stutters, even though Resolve is showing no frames being dropped. So I ended up disconnecting the LG 5K display and editing using just the internal MacBook Pro screen. Now I have purchased, but not yet received the Vega 20 MacBook Pro in the hopes that it will drive the LG 5K display without dropping frames when editing 4K footage. If this is faster, then I can cancel my order for the Vega 20 MacBook Pro and use this instead.
Hi David. I was just wondering how this worked out for you.
Yes other solutions offer exchangeable graphic cards when new ones are available. The major thing is the bottleneck which is TB3 itself. You probably won't get much improvement with the new card anyway. And by then we have to wait for TB4 or even 5.
Would've been nice if it was plug and play even at bootcamp
Question: I am using the non pro Blackmagic eGPU with the new Mac mini and your monitor (LG 5k Ultrawide) but I am having problem when the Mac mini awakes from Deep Sleep. More than often the display will not resync properly with the eGPU and I have to unplug and plug again. Do you experience the same? THX
Dandiccf I have had that happen with my Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 audio interface so might be a macOS wake issue.
Is it better to connect this to a 6 core i5 mac mini 2018 rather than just buying an iMac with the vega 48?
alrayyaniQtr I would say Mac Mini + any screen you want + BlackMagic is about the same as the iMac
The real test is seeing the performance difference with noise reduction (using NeatVideo) in NLE’s. It takes FOREVER to render that stuff. Hell, maybe you could even play it back in real time without rendering at all. That would be amazing.
Hey, I am a video editor and I make about 50-60 videos a month for living, some have very basic editing, some have a lot of colour correction and multiple layers, I use Final cut to edit and compressor to export. I am running a 2014 MacMini (2.6Ghz model) am looking forward to upgrade, you think I should go for an iMac 5K or should I get a MacBook Pro 13" and an external GPU.
I already have a MacBook Air 2014 model and that works fine for all the leisure tasks like watching movies and stuff and hence my primary goal is a faster more value for money machine
If someone is not a creative professional, but a developer that creates and trains machine learning models; is this worth buying it for that purpose? Somehow eGPU's always seem to be associated with creative professionals only.
can this thing be upgraded
Is it compatible with macbook 12inch 2015?
Been a long time apple fan but with the recent price tags of apple hardware and related hardware the PC market starts to look better and better...
Is there any difference when using 2 meter thunderbolt 3 cable with eGPU?
An active 1.5m cable comes with the Asus XG Station Pro and works fine, but you need an active cable.
is it good for crypto/hash algorithm farming?
What if you want to game and have the LG 5k UltraFine? Would this be the best option, or are there upgradable eGPUs that support the LG 5k?
Drew Flower This is an all-in-one design like the iMac, if you want to upgrade then get an egpu enclosure box and supply your own gpu.
Hi.
Tx for your videos. Good work.
I have 2 x LG ultrafine 5k screens and a MacMini 2018.
I have a vega 64 8Gb card.
How do I use these together ?
Please help
Nice Video... boot camp possible?
Will test that and other things in a separate video.
Will this work with Windows 10 running on Parallels on a MBP?
And then I heard that it will be shipping crossfire Vega 64 and I was like I guess it's worth it
Can I connect and use 2 monitors at the same time? One using Thunderbolt 3 port and another using DisplayPort?
Yes you can. You even get the LG 43UD79 and have up four separate sources on that one monitor.
What about that bug that went “Final Cut Pro exports do not utilize any eGPUs configuration!” Is it finally patched?
Yep, it recognizes it. You can use Activity Monitor to view GPU activity when FCPX is exporting.
Alright. This is good news.
Issue with the Vega II release is give it a few months, and a Razer Core X and a Vega II will destroy the value of this price unless there is a severe price drop. I understand its a custom case, fit, and cooling system but the mark-up price is absolutely insane.
great product, but a 4-500% markup on the card inside it... aluminum isn't that expensive, I'm pretty sure they could make that case for the $700 price tag of the standard model and still make a hefty profit (and sell A LOT more)
Why not an iMac Pro with two 5K Ultrafine displays and two Blackmagic eGPU Pro setup video.
Because 💰
@@9to5Mac lol!
Nobody reviews like you man! BTW, Will Radeon VII work with Razer core X?
Jerwin Pasco - intrigued to
Yes, but it will need to wait on Apple supporting that GPU in macOS. It’ll be supported in betas first.
9to5Mac can’t wait to see what it can do with 16gb hbm2.
@@9to5Mac Razer Core X + Radeon VII on 2019 Mac Pro. Too much? Or unnecessarily overkill even?
I’m using a MacBook Pro 2018 and a LG 5K monitor. Is the BlackMagic egpu my only alternative? Since I need 2 Thunderbolt 3?
There are some workarounds out there, but I’ve not tried them. As far as I know, this is the only “official” way, until more Titan Ridge eGPU chassis are made available. Hopefully this year.
9to5Mac thanks!!!
Please test with 15 inch.
Sorry, I don’t have a 15-inch any more.
Does it work with the Imac 21.5" from late 2015?
VNZS It needs TB3
(1:38) “And here’s both”.
- Jeff Benjamin for 9to5Mac 2019
I thought it was funny 😆
Your content is great. Way too many commercials these days. Will hesitate watching in the future.
What keyboard is in the background at 5:00 ?
Eagle-eyed Chupacabraj. A custom WASD Keyboard.
So I’ve got a 2016 15” MacBook Pro with TouchBar and the LG Ultrafine 5K display. Does that mean that no other than the BlackMagic EGPU enclosure is compatible/useful in my setup? For example using a Razor CoreX will not work at all increasing my rendertimes in FCPX?
Remco Havinga No, all eGPUs with an AMD card will improve your render times. They just won’t be able to output to you LG monitor.
@@abubakrakram6208 Thanks for the answer. So my understanding is the only downside is that I will use 2 Thunderbolt 3 ports on my MacBook instead of 1? If that is the case I don't see why they say: "if you’re using an LG UltraFine 5K Display, then it’s hard to recommend its chassis." (where "its chassis" is an Racer Core X for example)
@@media2c The problem is, an eGPU will help no matter what, but it will help most if you're using an external display. That way, the signal won't have to travel back to the computer. If you're using a display that uses a different port, the signal will still have to travel back through you computer. It'll still lower the benefit. That's why this eGPU is the best for your monitor: because the signal can travel from the eGPU directly to the display, and give you the most gain.
