(the cpu will run at 2.9GHz, the vast majority of the time which is nothing special for a tower or 'desktop' computer') when you hit the render button, ONE CORE out of the 6 will run at a higher clock speed.) Linus could have told you that.

Just to be clear, Blackmagic isn't Apple, and that isn't an Apple solution. Blackmagic is an epic company that builds every type of pro video gear. Apple selling it is just a handshake deal.

That eGPU only has an RX580. The IMac Pro uses a Vega 64 I think, so the iMac is MUCH faster.

You can get the quality of a desktop, in a laptop, if you put a stationary desktop sized object beside your laptop, lol. For editing on FCPX - totally get it, but if you just want graphics oomph for gaming, it's still more worth it to put the extra cost over a GPU towards building a desktop for it.

Honestly, the performance jump from previous MacBook Pros to the 2018 version is massive. Folks using macOS have been waiting for this type of update for seemingly forever. I don't get the hate.
The eGPU hold an AMD Radeon 580. The iMac Pro you have has a Vega chip. If you don't run something that can use them both at the same time, using the 580 will slow it down. You can also get a Vega 64 as an eGPU, which won't really be faster than the iMac Pro, but apps that can use both at the same time will be crazy
I wonder what apps would support both?
iJustine well, DaVinci Resolve is one I know that supports multi-GPU. The paid version can handle at least 12 GPUs at once. Not sure if the free version is limited to 1 or 2.

iJustine use the vega64 for the MacBook Pro
We use imac pro 18 core with egpu, but the blackmagic one is really not going to maximise the speed. We have a sonnet 650w with a Vega frontier edition running with the iMac pros Vega card and running two 16gb Vega cards in metal with davinci resolve studio 15 makes 4k 60fps editing and exporting extremely fast (and everything else). You can't use 2 gpus with the free davinci resolve , need to pay for the studio version ... .well worth the money however if you want the fastest Mac editing system. The black magic egpu is designed really for a MacBook and considering it's the 580 8gb (which was in the imac 2017 if you paid extra) it's a good cost effective option.

NONUPGRADEABLE eGPU??? Isn't the whole point of the enclosures that you can upgrade your laptop's graphics without buying a new laptop?
Plus it has an Rx 580 which is a midrange card that can't even touch anything from Nvidia besides the 1060. Couldn't they throw a Vega 56 in there? this eGPU is outdated as soon as it leaves the store not to mention the apple tax bringing it to a cool 700$ which is just ridiculous. The target market for this seems to be Apple fanboys who don't know much about hardware and can be duped into buying anything Apple related.

Benchmarks show that the i9 version thermal throttles to the point where it is almost matching the i7 in terms of performance. The chassis cannot keep up with cooling the i9.

A lot of haters here. MacBook Pro are incredible machine, they are the most powerful i9 machine considering weight and size, trolls says it overheat... yes like any other i9 machine but MacBook Pro is more silent than the others. Most of the initial issue was fixed in 1 weeks but UA-cam kids don’t care they want just says their home made of is better. It is not, MacBook Pro have: 1) macOS and if you think Windows is a good OS you can se everything and change hobby 2) T2 chip encrypt on the fly encode h265 at super speed 3) disk is one of the fasted on this planet 4) it is the machine with the fasted Thunderbolt 3 connection, directly to CPU and it has 4 indipendente port: this is massive for PROs 5) display is retina but especially it has true tone and p3 color gamut. Just these things makes alone the best laptop. You don’t want to spend these money? Good neither me, but spreading FUD and ignorance is child. And BTW Blackmagic eGPU is pretty cool too considering it is very silent it can connect Tb3 display like no other eGPU in the market. I have one? None I have a Mantiz Venus because it is upgradable, but saying it is a rip off because it is custom is pretty useless too.

Also after she finished the project she could send it straight to the server easily trough ethernet. The server is not meant for editing on it but more for storing stuff on it.

I'm assuming you mean the egpu, well if she has the high end iMac with the Vega graphics, the answer is no, it would actually make it worse, as the egpu is a 580, which is far inferior than a Vega 56 or 64 (if I correctly understand that an egpu works the same way as onboard graphics)

A firmware update come out after 1 week to improve cooling. Every i9 machine have this issue, still faster than i7 and MacBook Pro 15” is slimmer and more silent than other i9 machine. The all throttling thing is exaggerated by UA-cam users as often happens. I have pro costumers using it for work and it is fassst

RubySapior Even though I do think a 4TB drive is overkill for most people, raw UHD footage takes up a LOT of space and you do not want to be pulling and editing from an HDD. I have a Samsung 970 EVO 500GB in my PC for booting and important games and processes and a 2TB HDD for backup and that's fine for me but would be woefully unprepared to take on large amounts of raw footage.
Apple’s 4 tb ssd’s is like.. 1000x times faster than any other Drive.. Crazy technology built into it.. not necessarily for the common people, but that’s the reason for the price. Still Overprices but yeah

qvbe ssds dont produce so much heat, and its not the fastest ssd period, the macbook ssd has about a 2,600 MB/s read while the 970 evo 3,500 MB/s
