Even though this is an old video. It is exactly what I needed. Just beginning to work on hairspring straightening and needed information of replacement. Covered all I needed at a basic level. Thank you
Hi, at the end Nothing is shown or spoke about on how far down the spring is on the staff. Are these staffs made so that it is most proper to fully seat the spring in contact with the staff landing? That makes the most sense right? I read of people wanting to raise and lower the hs height, and because either the over coil or the balance arms are rubbing.
The collet which is in the centre is seated all the way down onto the balance staff. The hairspring shouldn't touch the balance arms, otherwise the hairspring isn't truly flat if it us doing that
Hey Jon, great video. Can I ask some follow-up questions? First, I assume you just used a flat punch here, right? No domed punches or anything? Second, I think you should just be able to push the collet on, no hammering or striking required? And last, did you have to tighten the collet at all, before or after you replaced it? Thanks, keep the videos coming!
Hi John, Yes, a flat punch with a hole in it to take the balance staff pivot. You should be able to just push it on. I didn't have to tighten the collet, but sometimes you do. Thanks for watching...

@@jonthewatch3640 Awesome, thanks Jon. What do you use to tighten it?
@@jfcairnx There is a special tool, but I use a tiny pair of grips with a various size holes to grip the collet and close
Helpful! Thanks!
