  • Most people would consider this to be about as interesting as watching paint dry, but since I use my phone to magnify my hairspring straightening anyway, I thought I'd post the process. Here I'm using the same microscope I show in my last video. The whole process of straightening the spring took over 16 minutes. I've edited out the pauses where I'm thinking about my next move.
I use a Dumont #7 tweezers in my left hand. The tool in my right hand is essentially a tapered pin with a slight bend at the tip, set in a handle.
This is just a study in putting a hairspring back in round. Putting one back in flat would be much more difficult to demonstrate on video. Perhaps someday I'll make an instructional video on this using a pocket watch size hairspring.
    Music compliments of bensound.com
    thanks for watching

To put one back in flat you need 2 tweezers. One to hold and one to twist. The Dumont #7 tweezers are good for the holding while a the #1's for twisting would give you better control over the angle. But yeah, one of my least favorite repairs (impossible now because of my age).

There is a correct proportion for the space between coils? I'm trying 1:3 in an old one because I see that in factory they do the coil shape by turning 4 concentric strings at a time...

Amazing work. Way more patience than I could ever muster. I would have said “good enough” at the 3 minute mark. LOL
How do hairsprings get bent out of shape anyways? Normal wear and tear or damage from a drop or impact? Thanks.

After twist the hairspring is not gonna run well anymore,,, it will behave not as one spring but two springs for example, cause a big twist can change the elasticity of it.And if run not hmogeneous will have a counter effect, ou wathc will never run precise anymore
