From their gospel beginnings through the folk-rock era to their soul music peak, the Staple Singers traveled a long, artistically-rich road into the mainstream of American music, spreading messages of peace, equal rights and love. When the Staples -comprised of family patriarch Roebuck “Pops” Staples and daughters Cleotha, Mavis and Yvonne- joined Stax in 1968, they were working alongside major rock acts at forums like the Fillmore West and East. Over the next few years, The Staple Singers saw 12 chart hits, including "Respect Yourself" and "I'll Take You There", both off their 1972 breakthrough album, Be Altitude: Respect Yourself. The Staples continued to record through 1994, when they found a new audience with their cover of The Band’s “The Weight” for MCA Records’ compilation “Rhythm, Country & Blues.” Mavis Staples, who received her first GRAMMY® Award in 2011, continues to record and tour, performing everywhere from the White House to the Kennedy Center Honors stage to major festivals like Outside Lands. Most recently, Staples is the subject of documentary “Mavis!”

This is one of the favorite gospel song of mine because my mom loved it and before she went home too be with Jesus in 2014 she would sing this song and she loved the Staple Singers she would often call them Pop and the Chullins!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
“ undertaker please drive slow, cause this lady that you’re haulin oh I hate to see her go” that part gets me every time
Yes, my father died last night and I came here to hear that very line, the way I remembered Pops singing it on an old mix tape a friend made for me long ago. A comfort to me today.
@@joyegreg sorry for your loss 🙏
@@901stinababy Thank you, I appreciate it.
I’ve been searching for this song because of this one verse.. and found it today. Miss u Mom and Granny
Yep I think 🤔🧐 of my mom grandma ❤
There will never be a singer like Pops Staple..

I agree I love his 🎶 and Mavis is a treasure!
definitely one of the greatest voices that has ever graced my ears
My late Father would sing this song. ✝️🙏🏽
Mavis has such a powerful voice ❤ love The Staples
We should all be thankful we have this music
Lord Have Mercy My Mother Use Sing This Song And The Only thing I could cry And Miss You So Much
"Will The Circle Be Unbroken?" by the Staple Singers is one of the greatest gospel songs of all-time! I absolutely positively love it!
I can't stop crying every time was my mom's favor song
How blessed is pop staples getting to perform with his daughters
The staple singers were awesome. We would get up in the morning with the radio playing gospel music. Those were good days.
You are sure right
In NYC in the late 60's it was WLIB/AM with "Joe Bostic and the Gospel Train" . . . it was awesome!
This song evokes such feeling.
His words tell it, but his tone makes me feel it...
Amen, I know what you mean
The Band, backed up by The Staples, produced an epic version of The Weight. It is transcendent.
I like the tremolo/leslie effect on the guitar. Makes it sound like an organ. Great mixing and vocals.
Praise God in Jesus name
Amen 🙏
This is THE version. Many years ago (late 60's early 70's) One of my shifts at the local radio station was early Sunday morning, when the black gospel groups would come in for live performances, but occasionally they would want me to play some records and this was one...
I've always loved this version. Can really hear this man's soul.
I remember when my grandma was alive. Me and my siblings and cousins would sing the chorus of this song. All of us would march around the house after breakfast. Great memories❤❤
Black upbringings with grandma. Priceless memories
Beautiful song. Mavis Staples did another version of this too...

My brother Leonard got hooked on gospel in his late teens, and this is one of the albums he purchased. I fell in love with it and listened to it over and over and over. It's one of the best all time gospel albums, a true treasure. Mavis' voice still blows me away.
We just lost Mom today. I needed too hear this song💖
May the peace of God that surpasses all understanding. Guard your heart and mind in Jesus Christ.
I lost my mom a month ago. I’m sorry for your loss
@@jsf539 thank you... Sorry for your loss too. It's a different kind of deep pain when you lose your Mom. 💖
Pops was truly a beautiful man and after having just watched the incredible MAVIS! documentary-I once again have faith that this troubled world we currently live in does have a path forward, with people like Mavis Staples still spreading love and compassion across the globe, I have hope! Beautiful family and the Staples story is I N S P I R I N G! Mavis' voice brings me to my knees-total force of nature, filled with humanity and spiritual uplift! ALL MUST SEE MAVIS! DOCUMENTARY!

Will the circle be unbroken? By and by Lord by and by
My God, I hear my father's beautiful singing voice in this song. Rest in power. I love you forever. Mr. Howard Smiley (August 3, 1943-December 22, 2019)
Pops played the blues.
Chills.
The Carter Family. They are credited with this being the first "Country" song.
The Staple Singers are a great soul and gospel family.
Pops Staples is the man and he made his singing family so phenomenal.
Big up to you Mama Mavis Staples
RIP Pops Staples
This song is very emotional and brings tears to my eyes. It actually did rain on the day of my grandmother’s funeral. I think of her every time I listen to this.
Amazing
I don't know who the 11 people are who gave a "thumbs down" to this song, but I don't think we have much in common. I thought Patsy Cline's version of this song was the best until I heard this one. No criticism of Patsy.
I discovered patsy in my thirties on the Southside of Chicago. She died when I was 10 and my parents didn't know her. I have been a fan of her's ever since.
Devils are always busy!
Down home church singing , nothing like it !! 🙏🏽🥰
It just don't get better than that
Pops had a gold mine with himself as well as his kids. Great group. RIP Roebuck"Pops" and Cleotha Staples.
This song still gives me goosebumps.
Miss and luv you all.....
Glory!
Very True
Yes memories yes my grand pa use to sing and my mother and sisters would sing behind him I was a little girl
Up listening thinking of my late father RIP dad 😭❤
God this is a sad song. I have heard no better version of it. I'm 62 now but I remember this song when I was somewhere around 4,5, or 6. It is so sad about a boy losing his mother. I remember crying back then because I couldn't imagine this happening to me and the thought of it would have me crying whenever I heard it.
It's a song of longing, but not a sad song. Ther's a better home awaiting in the sky. I lost my Momma this year and I look forward to being among her again soon enough, not to say I didn't grieve, grief is healing. Love and light to you, be happy, the Lord grants you strength.
Not better, but equally good is George Jones’ classic ballad country rendition. Different take, same high level of respect for a magnificent composition.
I'm going to play this for my mother.
@Vindice
Thank you ✝️
I love this song.
Happy now 2021 is here.
Great Group
This is the very first version of this song I can remember hearing -- and it's a true classic!
I heard this song when I was 12, I'm now 70 years old...Thanks Aunt Margie..I love you..
I was raised in a cult. I’m only starting to try to hear and remember the lyrics to all of the songs that I should be able to identify already. When I was 19 my brother passed away and we begged the woman who gave birth to us, to please have Amazing Grace sung/ played, we didn’t care just please have it played for him. No doing. It was considered a pagan song??
50 yrs old and heard it today for the first time.... big talent here!!!👏
Tell you bro , I love this song , love the way he lets his voice drag on , kinda like slip and slide , I'm sometimes white depends on how much I stay in the sun , I guess you can say , I can go from white to brown in a week , God bless this man , I song with him to this song , when my on mother past , peace ✌️ to his family , thank you.
A gift from the musical gods
