My uncle wrote song Al Bell after one of uncles was murdered. The lyrics came to my uncle sitting in a bus my grandaddy bought to calm him down about losing a younger brother

The lyrics are wrong during the bass solo. David was the bass player's name. Mavis sings Davey not baby Little Davey (cuz he was short) Davey not Lady. Recorded by the Swampers in Muscle Shoals. There's a movie about them, they backed up Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Rolling Stones and had Dwayne Alman living in a tent in the studio parking lot.

The Billboard Hot 100 #1 song on my 13th birthday in '72...needed to be at that position for longer than a week! ♫No more smiling faces / Lyin' to the races♫?!?! Sing it loud and proud in 2020!!!!!
This song is from way before my time, I first knew it from the enterprise rental car commercials in the 90s. I don't think I ever truly gave it a listen until my late 20s but wow there really is something magical, comforting and uplifting about this song. It's so simple and yet every part of it is executed so perfectly and joyfully, the older I get the more I appreciate it.
I became aware of Mavis from seeing her in The Last Waltz. The power in her voice (like an idling muscle car..you hear the power right away) but what blew me away was her phrasing on the verse of The Weight she sang. So I got myself somewhat familiar. This is IMO one of the sexiest vocal performances ever. People told me it's natural, not trying to do it, as they're gospel. I didn't argue but my mind was calling BS. Why during the guitar solo is she saying Daddy, daddy... I later found out that her actual father was the guitarist for the Staples 🤣😂
Great song! Number one on the Top 40 billboard charts 50 years ago today on Saturday, June 3, 1972. Half-century ago the summer of '72 became a happy-go-lucky time for a 6 year-old like me. What a fun summer 1972 was.
