  • Vee-Jay Records released the Staple Singers' first long-play album, titled 'Uncloudy Day', in 1959; the disc, number 5000, was additionally the first in the Vee-Jay Spiritual Series.
    The songs for this video I selected from the album; they are
    1) On My Way To Heaven;
    2) Going Away;
    3) I'm Leaning;
    4) I Know I Got Religion.
    The visuals are also from the album-- a portion of the cover art, and a photograph of Roebuck Staples with his children. However, the liner notes suggest that the son, Pervis, had left the group to go into the army, being replaced by his sister Yvonne. The other members of the family group are given as Cleotha, then age 25, the oldest child; Mavis, 19; and Cynthia, 7. The songs were arranged by Roebuck Staples, who accompanies on the guitar, bringing a fresh, distinctive, heartfelt sound to gospel.

    I was born in Mississippi, and when I was growing up there, ALL you had was a "song". Black people were treated pretty bad!! I remember the Staple singers, we used to sing all their songs. Their songs made you "think" and realize GOD had a "better plan" for us.

    We all revere the spell binding Mavis. But I'd like to put a word in for Cleotha's top note that gives an incredible ring to the Staple Singer's sound.

    I saw Mavis Staples with Bonnie Raitt last June in San Diego. She was just as on fire now as when she was young and to think this album came out the year I was born....

    There will always be the Staple Singers, and everybody else, as far as I am concerned! It doesn't matter what genre they are performing, who wrote it, or whom they performed with; they did it perfectly, each and every time! Their music will ALWAYS lift up my soul, and allow it to be shined on by the face of the Lord, thanks dear God for them all!

    ill never forget the time i saw them in a back alley in detroit (for free). When they were done after a show that went on for hours, the limo came and picked them up while people ran down the street after the car. it was amazing. id never seen them before, which is why i was up on a sunday morning for this. so glad i have this memory. rip pops

    FANTASTIC! The first song is so haunting. I have their 1965 album Freedom Highway , but I've never heard this one. I'll have to buy it! I thought Pops might still be alive, but sadly I see he died in 2000. He was the last remaining living link to early blues, Having grown up on a plantation near the first recognized blues guitarist, Charlie Patton, & learned guitar from him. John Fogerty, & some of the Excello Records swamp-blues guys, were also highly influenced by Pops’ guitar style.

    I discovered the early Staples stuff in the 80's, and it shook me to my toes.
    Pop's guitar sucks me in and the haunting harmonies give me goose bumps.

    Lord knows I know Mavis's voice. Even then at 19 she was powerful. Bless the Staple Singers forever I have never heard this album but now I hope it's on iTunes this is how true gospel is sung. I grew up listening to gospel music like this in my grandparents home in the south on Sunday mornings before church. Brings back so many memories from my childhood. Thanks for sharing and posting :-)

    I was at the Ace Hotel last Saturday in NYC to hear a DJ spin sacred music, and it was awesome because it bought back lots of memories from the "Gospel Train" days.
    This is incredible...I love it!

    Musicians earn money as a result of people watching a film on UA-cam in which their music is used. This is why musicians are happy that their music appears in all kinds of films. Advertising generates the income for the artists. UA-cam will block films if the artists have a contract that prohibits use of their music. This responsibility is UA-cam 's.
    In other words: if you hear music in any film on UA-cam you must assume that the rights for the music have been well secured.
