- This is the 1955 Gospel song by The Staples Singers that Ben E. King's famous song of the same name is based on. He wrote his song in 1960 and climbed the charts to Number 1 twice!
Lyrics by : Charles A. Tindley
When the storms of life are raging,
Stand by me (stand by me);
When the storms of life are raging,
Stand by me (stand by me);
When the world is tossing me
Like a ship upon the sea
Thou Who rulest wind and water,
Stand by me (stand by me).
In the midst of tribulation,
Stand by me (stand by me);
In the midst of tribulation,
Stand by me (stand by me);
When the hosts of hell assail,
And my strength begins to fail,
Thou Who never lost a battle,
Stand by me (stand by me).
In the midst of faults and failures,
Stand by me (stand by me);
In the midst of faults and failures,
Stand by me (stand by me);
When I do the best I can,
And my friends misunderstand,
Thou Who knowest all about me,
Stand by me (stand by me).
In the midst of persecution,
Stand by me (stand by me);
In the midst of persecution,
Stand by me (stand by me);
When my foes in battle array
Undertake to stop my way,
Thou Who savèd Paul and Silas,
Stand by me (stand by me).
When I'm growing old and feeble,
Stand by me (stand by me);
When I'm growing old and feeble,
Stand by me (stand by me);
When my life becomes a burden,
And I'm nearing chilly Jordan,
O Thou "Lily of the Valley,"
Stand by me (stand by me).
"death on the Nile" brought me here... powerfully amazing song... smiles
Same!
Same as well 💕. The movie was the 1st time I heard this. So much passion 💜
@@TheJosha1 same here... really enjoyed the movie also ☺️
I just watched ending of Death of the Nile, I watched but couldn't even see nor hear the actress, all i saw was Mavis and her sisters, along with pop's guitar, brought tears to my eyes, of course this is not the version they played in the movie, it was an older version of this song, this is a live version
Same as you! Research great music and songs@@sharrielee911
No big production, no fake auto-tune, just pure musical talent and genius.
Agree
The new Hulu movie death on the Nile brought me here. It's the last song that's in the movie. Just the beginning that they showed (being lip synced by the "singer" at the end) of it moved me so much, I cried and had to find it...wow!!!
Just went through what you did Veronica to the tee😊
Me too
That's why I'm here.. I heard in that last scene and immediately had to find it.
Me too!!
Me too
Mavis has got to be the queen of gospel voices she was blessed with superb vocal chords from the almighty one.

My favorite version, I’m 40 and I found this when I was 19. Been wit it ever since.
Pure Magic her vocals are something everyone should listen too
Heard this in the movie “Death on the Nile”. It was so moving I had to hear it again 😊
Bellissima. Da pelle d'oca. I love Staple Singers.❤❤❤
This is True Soul Music.
This is my great grandmothers favorite song... Thank you God.. This song is so powerful
Mavis is only 16 when she sang the lead vocal. Just remarkable a 16-yr-old would have such a voice and such musical sophistication.
You kidding, right?!?!?
Daiuuuuuum.... :D
What was the name or the song she sang rhat got the rave review
I want to hear
@@berniceliggins7310 The two biggest hits by the Staple Singers (with Mavis as lead vocal) are "I'll Take You There" and "Let's Do It Again".
🎉
Good Lord this is so good
Christ...you can just hear the pain and horror of slavery passed down to that woman...what a voice. Love it...thanks True Detective
Casey Peters Yes. All the best gospel conveys it.

Thou who knowest all about me, stand by me!!!!
My god, that Mavis Staples is one great singer.
I’ve always believed if she had chosen a solo career she would’ve been a super star. I absolutely love to hear her sing.
POOR PEOPLE, THIS HAVE KEPT US, TO FEEL THE DEPT OF SOUL IS GREAT FOR US, THOSE THAT HAVE IT. THEY CAN'T SHAKE OR FEEL IT, MATERIAL POSSESSION CAN'T GIVE YOU THAT SOUL!!!!!!!
Love this song reminds me of my mother Rip 1992
Stumbled onto this masterpiece!! My ears never felt better that this exact moment while im writing this comment....🎶👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Heard this song on True Detective and it reminded me of my grandma-she had the Best of Staple Singers album and used to play it every Sunday while she cooked dinner.
+Baardmans Verbaardschot This IS the song though. Anything else is counterfeit.
No. You heard it on a TV show. The end.
My Mom used to play it on Saturday morning when we were cleaning the house♥️
I realize it's quite randomly asking but do anyone know a good website to watch newly released tv shows online ?
@Muhammad Vivaan Flixportal :)
Please just ask God to come into your heart when you listen to it and when he does, it will have a lot more meaning to you. I know because he converted me years ago and these songs have so much meaning to me until I sit with tears rolling down my cheeks and have so much love in my heart.
God is a lie

Gospel, the root of R&B
this song take me back when our grand mother received the eldest award plaque of the church in bowling Alabama
Awesome! I did some research on Mavis Staples. She's 80 and is still performing and was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame last year!
Yes sir. Bessemer, Alabama is still playing this track in my mother-in-law's house. Mavis is raw at 16 years old. Crazy sounds and original music.
first time I heard Stand by Me......It will not be the last time!
Amen .I love you the Staples singers .I love miss Mavis
Mavis has a one of a kind voice
Jimmy Kimmel agrees! Mavis only 79 years old!

What a voice and song! Saw this in Nile movie! Love this song! Shalom
Soulful
Those who enjoy 60's soul and motown may not be aware that gospel music sung in church was the basis of that music. Even though the music is not direct copies there was enormous controversy when writers and performers moved church themes into hot performance and racy tunes.
I remember seeing that conflict in the Ray Charles biopic.
Elvis said himself that he listened to these records when he was growing up. He looked up to the original artists. His interpretation is different...not better or worse..it was his take on the song.
Pervis Staples, born in 1935, was a member of the group, along with his dad and his sisters Cleotha and Mavis, from 1948 (apart from his spell in the armed services). He left the group in 1970, apparently to pursue artist management and song publishing. I can't find anything more about him. Hope this helps.
The complete title is "Lord, Stand by me"...
Fucking beautiful.
Wow!
The lily of the Nile can be fatal
So Ben E. King made himself famous with this song...
The only thing this song has in common with Ben E King's song is the title
🎶💨
True detectives ep.3

O te conmueven, o no.
could you tell me where i could find the lyrics of this song?
No creo que sea mejor o peor que la de Ben King, solo es diferente. Es un genero musical completamente distinto. I dont think this is better or worst than Ben King version, it is just different. It is a whole different musical type, its gospel.
Anyone know where I can find this specific version of the song? This version runs 4:28, every other version runs only 3:48.
don't get soul feeling sounds these days all done by rap ain't the same
There was a boy in the family?? What happened to him?
They all passed on except Mavis
fucking publicity between each video of this true detective playlist. UA-cam is turning into tv, And that's not a compliment.
