The photos in this review are inspirational. After a recent trip to Iceland, I decided that I wanted to return with a medium format camera. I now have the 100s but I can see it will be a few months of shooting and learning before I would be confident enough to use the camera on a return trip. Great review Andy. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on the GF 20-35 f4. I managed to get one recently and I do think it has filled a gap in the GFX system for landscape photographers.

Top review Andy 👍🏻. For those with the X system, it would be interesting to compare an up-res XT2, 3 or 4 shot to a GFX 100 shot. Obvious there would be differences but still interested.

Hi Andy, first time I’ve seen one of your videos - was drawn in by the image used for the video thumbnail, and was genuinely wowed by many of your other images shown and on your website too. Great work - might be tempted to buy a print when one from your gallery comes available. I particularly like the how you got the cooperative guy in the red jacket to put himself in just the right spot in quite a few of your images, giving a real spark of colour contrast 😉 On the subject of long lens choices for the GFX100S, had a similar thought process myself with mine - though I mainly shot portraits, so have different priorities. The conclusion I came to was that, until Fuji come out with longer zooms (which they will do, without doubt) if the GF250 is too limiting even with the 1.4x converter (as you already have the GF100-200 to make up the shorter focal lengths) then Pentax 645 lenses are a quality short term substitute, if you don’t mind manual focus. For example they have the SMC 150-300mm f/5.6, and really high quality 1.4x and 2x extenders for relative peanuts, compared to the GF lenses. My first one was their superb 120mm f4 macro, which does 1:1 reproduction, unlike the very expensive GF120mm macro, but once I realised how close they come in terms of IQ it made me buy a few others, especially cheap mint quality ones imported from Japan. Anyway, not ideal if you want to stick to just one lens system, but may scratch an itch in the meantime while the GF lens line up grows 👍

Thank you so much for this, Andy. Each time I begin to lust after the GFX100s again, I'm forced to question my need for such a device. Your detailed real-world review has, I think, finally convinced me to stay with my Canon R5 system. The lens choices with the GFX100s are just too limited - especially since 90% of my images are shot at the longer end of 150-400mm. Thanks again, mate.
Thanks for the comment, glad you found the review useful. The GFX is a fantastic camera, but for sure the lenses system of full frame Canon, Sony and Nikon is much more mature and varied. I used the GFX recently in Namibia and the lack of reach was a constant issue.

Yesterday I held a Fuji gfx 50s for the first time and I felt that I was experiencing my film days MF Mamiya Bronica’s and Yashicas camera. When hit the camera button the click brought me back to the earlier days.
I absolutely pondering on the 50sii or the 100sii the more the better.
I want to feel that experience I did during the film days.
Ps. I mostly do studio portrait photography and lots of heavy editing and that’s wouldn’t be a problem with the MF 100 megapixel.

I have been using the GFX 50 Sii and I can honestly say it's a fantastic landscape camera if you don't want the hundred megapixels and honestly 50 is enough. Check out that body. It is so good for landscape photography. It is very slow focusing for pretty much everything else but it allows you to get into the GFX system with the beautiful full frame sensor, in fact that sensor is better in lowlight than the 100. I'm about to the 100s ii. But all I know is once I started using this system for my landscape photography my jaw the ground when I first saw the files on the screen. I just could not believe the level of detail was that possible. It almost felt like cheating. I was never a person to pixel peep but now I actually enjoy pixel peeping to see what this amazing system can create. Definitely keen on the 100s ii

Great review Andy. These cameras are truly amazing and can produce stunning images and very, very large prints. I use to shoot medium and large format film and always loved the detail and the feel of images from those two. I found however, that for the large format, it was very heavy to cary around and ended up using my car as my camera bag. The medium format cameras were so much better and loved using them. I sold those systems years ago and switched to 35mm and then to digital SLR. I have made many images with these and produced some great prints. I would love to add digital medium format and the 100S is the holy grail for me. I am not a pro so the $$$ is way out of my reach. just for the camera, let alone the lenses. So, for me, if Fuji did produce an affordable full frame camera or even a APS-C, that can produce the tonal, resolution and dynamic range, I would love to see it. Hi Andy, I have assigned the top front custom button (just behind the shutter) as a playback button, and this allows me to replay/preview quickly.
That's a nice idea. For me though, the problem is that my muscle memory keeps mixing up the review button and the display button. There doesn't seem to be a logic to the way it's laid out, and it's different from other Fuji cameras

Thanks for the comment Dylan. I actually purchased this and will use it going forward, but I'll still continue to use the X system as well and plan on getting the higher resolution XH2 or the XT5 when they're launched. I've just been in Namibia and used both systems side by side.

Six weeks ago I switched to the GFX100S after 29 years as a Nikon user. First I was not sure if this was the right decision (weight wise). But I don't regret it. Here is why:
Image quality: Beside the high megapixel count, the possibility to capture images in 16-Bit RAW is great. I think this is what you mentioned with the quality of recording color and ligh with the GFX100S. I had shot some sunrises with delicate pink colours or sunbathed fog. It was never easier to process this images. The color rendition is amazing. No color banding when adjusting it or downsample the images for the web. As you have shown, the shadow recovery is insane ;-)
User Interface (aka handling): The GFX100S (like other Fujifilm Bodys) is easy to use. It is really intuitive.
Fun: For me the GFX100S brought back the fun in landscape photography. I take more time to capture an image. I.e. the possibility to have the RGB histogram in live view (and not only in playback like Nikon) is great.
Not so good:
As you mentioned the lens selection. I'm still waiting for the 20-35/4. It was not announced at the summit so I bought a use 23mm (wich by the way is great). I'm not sure, if I need a longer focal length.
The weight issue: My first tour was a 3 day hut tour in the Austrian Alps with some elevation gain. To be honest is was hard ;-) But at the end it was fun. I have to bring my body into a better shape ;-) (but hey, I'm in the 50s ;-) ) A good part of the weight was my tripod (Gitzo Mountaineer Series 3 with a midsize bullhead) at 2.7 KG. Here I have a question: As far as I know, you use a Gitzo Traveller (Series?) with an RRS Ballhead. Is this correct. If yes, how good does it handle the GFX100S?
I'm really thinking of getting an X-H2 or an X-T-5 (when it is released) with 3 light lenses for alpine tours in addition to the GFX.

Thanks for the comment Klaus, really glad you enjoyed the video. Pretty much agree with all your points, it's a fantastic camera and one I'll continue to use alongside the X Series. Going forward it really is going to be about the right camera for the right trip. I just took the GFX to Namibia and it was great as there was very little hiking (although I really missed having longer reach, despite using the 250mm and 1.4xTC when I was there), but for something a lot more hiking based I'll use the X series

A lot of good points, there is much to like about the GFX 100S. However, I still not ready to give up my Nikon Z7 totally. The shutter blackout drives me nuts, but other than that, I love using the camera. Going back and forth with the Nikon is a bit of a challenge as lens mounting and switches work in opposite directions.
@@klausschleicher523 Sorry Klaus, I forgot to answer your question about the tripod. Well, I've not actually used the GFX with the Gitzo Traveller. When weight isn't critical I've been using a Pro Media Gear tripod promediagear.com/collections/compact-apex-carbon-fiber-tripod/products/trs344-pro-stix-compact-carbon-fiber-tripod-4-sections-71-inches-height which is easily the best tripod I've ever used. I'm pretty sure it should be fine with the Gitzo though, although that tripod isn't as stable all round
Hello, great video ! I have a GFX100s since October last year. I've did several hikes mainly with 2 lenses the 23 and the 45-100. I never felt the need to have something wide, but yes from time to time a longer telephoto would help to isolate a detail in the scene. I could add a 100 200 or an XT4 with a 70 300 , I have not decided yet. In both case the weight would be my main issue. And yes as mentioned in the video beside weight and overall lens system , the depth of field vs APSC is a limitation.

Andy, spot on review! I’ve been using mine for last 15 months and the images are so good. But you’re right about the long lenses; I thought long and hard about buying the 250 prime. So I carry my XT-3 and xf 100-400 as my spare body and long lens. Very intrigued by xhs-2 coming in the fall as an alternative body. I’m still planning to register for Dolomites fall of ‘23. Just curious if the recent avalanche (happened while you were in Namibia) was part of the Dolomites itinerary?
Thanks Michael, glad you enjoyed the review. I used the 250mm in Namibia, and it's an amazing lens but VERY big and heavy for a fixed focal length. Indeed the high resolution X-H2 should be an excellent back up camera with a tele attached and it's probably what I'll got with going forward.
I saw the news about the avalanche. It's not anywhere near where we go in the Dolomites workshop - it was the glacier in Marmolada which melted due to higher than normal temperatures. Where we run the workshops there's never any snow in the summer so no danger of an avalanche, but it is indeed concerning. I'm no longer doing the winter workshop in the Dolomites, but over the years I did it previously, the decrease in snow due to higher temperatures has been profoundly noticeable.
I think you’ll find you’ll LOVE the TOP DISPLAY so much. I do with my GFX100. I have had it from the launch and I have NO regrets! only ❤️!

I pretty much stick to prime lenses as my personal preference. I’m keen to shoot The Palouse area of Washington/Idaho with it. I’ve heard good things.

I’m an architect so justified buying the GFX 50S by buying Pentax 645 lenses with tilt shift adapters. Inevitably I started buying GF lenses. And discovered that they produced better results with LR perspective correction than the Pentax Lenses did.
While I agree with all your comments, I have my own solution to the issues you raise.
First of all the multiple bodies / system dilemma.
In trying to simplify my system I seem to end up buying more gear so I can carry less. This does not really work of course.
I also want to have only one bag yet have gear for portraits, architecture and landscape. I definitely want to get on a plane with only one carry on.
Long story short: main kit:
GFX 100S
Canon 24 TSE tilt shift Fringer Pro for f stops
GF 35-70
Canon 85 f1.8 w/ Fringer Pro for f stops
Canon 100-400 mrk ii with Fringer
The 100-400 is heavy and it does vignette some, but it focuses down to 36 inches and as far as I can tell is every bit as sharp was GF 100-200. I use the 1.4 extender too which keys the 25 TS turn into a 33mm TS lens.
It also doubles as a wild life lens. And means I can sell my FX 100-400
The 85mm canon seem as good as or better than the Fuji GF 80mm so I returned it and am saved $2000 US. It does vignette some so I shoot portraits in 1:1. It is light small and cheap.
Here I want to apologize to any and all taking the trouble reading this to say sorry for the length and explain that I live in a photographer free world so I enjoy talking to like minded people.
My main reason for buying the 10OS was to be able to compose and shoot 65::24 pano in one shot. I like the fact that those panos are 50MB. Much as I like the 50S, the 100S pano are just better.
I completely agree about the Fuji odd structure of mid range zooms. But I do want to say that the 45-100mm is really really exceptional. Dazzlingly good.
It is 1000g so unfortunately the 35-70 is 610g lighter and always goes in the bag and 45-100 stays home.
Again apologies for the length of this.
The GFX cameras are the first to make me no longer miss my Pentax 67.

Thanks for the great review. They finally came out with the 20-35 F4 so decided to move ahead with this lineup. Using an R5 for landscape currently and something about the way it handles bright sun during sunrise and sunset is not easy to deal with. My old 5Div seemed better in that space. Looking forward to this MF camera. 🙂

An excellent review of the GFX100s Andy. I thought long and hard about purchasing this camera, but in the end opted for the 50sii. With the financial saving I bought an XT-4, having owned an XT-2. I find that the GFX 50sii and XT-4 is a perfect combination, particularly as they use the same batteries. As you point out, the lenses for the GFX are somewhat limited, but that is covered by the XT-4. As it happens, the GFX lenses suit me perfectly as I do not us a long telephoto, except for wildlife and the occasional landscape. The GFX 80mm prime lens is truly outstanding for landscape work. I used the GFX50sii and XT4 extensively in Namibia last year and they both performed extremely well. Although the GFX system is a little weighty, I find it ideal for travel. It is not too heavy, and is smaller than the older GFX50s. Thanks again, and i hope your Namibia trip goes well.

I actually recorded this before the Namibia trip and have since returned. The GFX was superb, but I found that this was a trip when I often really wanted something around 300mm (FF equivalent) and in many cases longer, so there'll be a lot of cropping, but like you, my intention has always been to use it side by side with the X System.
@@AndyMumford Thanks Andy - I might add that your coverage about the IS with the GFX 100s (and 50sii) was well highlighted, providing the ability to hand hold landscape photos, when using a tripod is too difficult such as in a tight spot.

As someone who doesn't own any GFX gear I found your observations on the lens lineup very interesting, would you still recommend this camera for portrait photographers going into digital MF (coming from Nikon D810 and 645 film MF)? Thanks Andy! Would love to have your opinion of this versus the Fuji X-H2 where you have a multi-shot pixel-shift mode, which stitches together a bunch of photos which might be fairly convenient for the resolution factor :)
Thanks for the comment. Well, both cameras have pixel shift, but it's important to remember that pixel shift only works if the subject has zero movement. Any wind moving trees or grass, moving water or anything like that will be blurred because it takes about 8 seconds for the camera to to take all the images. So the GFX will always give you that resolution in one image, whereas with the XH2/XT5, you can only get close to that resolution in very specific circumstances. And in those same circumstances, the GFX will give you 400mp with the Pixel Shift :D

I have one more for you...I shoot an A7rIV (60MP) and was wondering if you see a significant difference in the shadow noise between the 100s and either the A7rIV or your x-series Fuji's?? I want to migrate over to the 100s and want to print large, but already have an investment in body and glass...so I'm really trying to determine exactly what it is I'm going to pay all that cash for...

Thanks for the comment Joseph, glad the video was useful. I can't comment on the Sony as I've never used the system, but the shadow noise is certainly better by some margin than the smaller X series Fujis.
I shoot 4x5 and 6x7 film and a Pentax K1 Mark II 36mp FF with mostly the limited lenses. After printing in the darkroom and with a Canon Pro-1000 printer for commercial use, I find it hard to justify shooting anything other than the APSc Fuji X-T4 with 10-24/18-55/55-200. But I understand shooting the GFX for fun, that's why I still shoot the 4x5 and 6x7. Or if your one of those .01% photographers that really needs the resolution.
Hi, Andy. Even though I was one of the first to get the 100s in March, 2021, I watched your excellent video and I must say you well summed up the 100S experience. It is a fantastic camera and the lens are wonderful, although heavy for the most part. The point you make about having a back up camera is an excellent one. I was in Svalbard recently and I brought the 100S with three lenses (including a rented 250mm) and my X-T3 with several lenses. The kit weighed a ton and I don't see repeating that experience, especially if I were hiking. I find that even though the image quality is terrific and the ability to crop heavily when necessary, I am still deciding whether the GFX system is right for me. Thanks again for a very fine quality. Indeed, it's not a straightforward camera and there are certainly times when I'll leave it at home (I'll be in Lofoten at the end of the month hiking the peaks, and for that I'll just take an X-T4. But for places where weight is less of an issue, then I think it's great to have it.
I agree with you about the 250mm though...I was using that in Namibia and it weighs a ton.

Glad COVID didn't hit you too hard. I've had it twice now, once earlier this year when I was just lethargic for 4 days or so, and once earlier in the epidemic and pre-vaccination, when it knocked me off me feet for almost 2 weeks. I guess we're all learning to live with it now.

Really looking forward to Lofoten. For sure I'll continue to use the Fuji GFX system, but I'll also continue to use the smaller cameras as well. I enjoy them both.
I've the 50r and the quality is outstanding. I always say that full frame is all you need for top quality photography. However, if you try medium format, you may not want to go back. It is heavier but worth the extra effort for the results. Regards

same here ! i have apsc fuji cameras- even the new X-H2S, full frame nikon cameras, and the GFX50R… nothing compares to medium format - not even close!
And it’s not even medium format… its just over half the size of the smallest medium format negative. In reality it’s just a little bigger than 35mm, but still lovely.
@@Badutspringer in digital, medium format just needs to be larger than 35 mm full frame… so, yes, it is medium format
@@mortenthorpe Semantics. Medium format is know to be at least 6X4,5 and that has been refered to as medium format in photography for at least half a century. You can talk digital and analogue all you want, but photography is photography and this is by no means medium format. We don't call vista vision or 65 medium format either. But take a big fat bite of what the Fujifilm marketing department is dishing out. The fact that it is not medium format does not mean that it's not amazing. It is, but if you put a medium format lens on it - like one from a RZ67, then it will only use the middle of the glass. Bare fordi du siger det bliver det jo ikke rigtigt.
Thanks for the detailed and informative review. I am from a different league and have yet to reach the medium format. I did seriously consider the GFX 50II a months ago when Fujifilm had a sale with hesitation regarding the less than desirable auto focus system. I then happened to be hospitalized and I missed the sale when I got out. Well, maybe next time? Any thoughts on the 50S II?
I’ve not used the 50S II specifically, but I’ve used the sensor in the 50R and it’s impressive, and the body is pretty much the same as the 100S. For sure it’ll be a fantastic camera, and worth it if you can pick it up in a sale

Great video. Have you tried enhancing the super cropped image of the tree with the new Lightroom feature?
I've tried it a few times on images taken with lower resolution cameras and it's pretty impressive. Gigapixel is marginally better though
I love my GFX50R. If Fujifilm had produced a GFX100R then I would have been tempted.

Good point about the lack of longer lenses for the GFX system, which I'm sure Fuji will address over time. However, you might want to look into adapting some existing lenses, specifically DSLR-mount lenses. There are several Canon EF & Nikon F lenses that cover the image circle of the GFX and even if they don't, they just project a tiny vignette at the extreme edges. Considering the crop factor of 1.25, they'd be excellent options for your needs. For instance, the Nikon 200-500mm F5.6 becomes approx. 250-625mm F7.1 and since you mostly shoot stopped down for landscapes, there's plenty of sharpness (whether it will resolve the entire 100 MP you have on tap, only you can judge). I'm currently enjoying the GFX 50Sii by adapting Nikon F & Leica M glass, all of which cover the image circle of the GFX. A particular highlight is the Nikon F 105mm F1.4, which translates to approx. 130mm F1.8 with Auto Focus on the GFX. The results are stunning and the lens can easily resolve the 50MP. HOWEVER, I am not a professional, purely an enthusiast. If this adapting business doesn't suit a professional workflow, I completely understand but the options are there until the GFX system matures. Huge fan of your work. Cheers.

The crop factor is 1.25 in reverse, 0.79.
So in fact your Nikon lens becomes a 158-395 f4.4.
And your Nikon 105mm becomes an 83mm f1.1. Not as you’ve stated.
Great video presented in a practical sense.
Few things I would like to add.
Firstly it records in 16bit raw color depth and that’s the magic you see in color depth and tonality. You can review the diff between 14bit and 16bit online if you like.
The file then becomes a joy to process from this GFX. Even better in B&W photography.
You already raised the downsides of medium format often requiring focus stacking which means more captures and more larger files.
Yes 100-200mm doesn’t give you much reach as 55-200 in x-system. But you can use the 1.4 extension which works well with 100-200.
I use 100-200 with 1.4tc , 45-100mm and waiting for 20-35mm. I do have Laowa 17mm f4 which is quite sharp and very wide.
I have also played with macro tubes and they give great results with existing lens. Just focus stack heaps to get the image you looking for.
Some other things of note.
Recently acquired Dxo Pure Raw, it really is an awesome raw pre processor for this camera sensor and GFX lenses.
I then use that dng export in CaptureOne for intermediate or final processing.
When I need to focus stack I use Helicon Focus software integrated to CaptureOne .
As I don’t use adobe stack my pixel edits are in Affinity photo round trip from CaptureOne.
If I am really concerned about color bending I just export it as 16 bit ROMM RGB TIFF file from CaptureOne to Affinity Photo which works natively in 16 bit and 32 bit and finish my processing there.
Hope some of the above helps in some way.
Thanks for the useful comment, there's a lot I agree with there. I did intend to mention the 14 - 16bit, and the settings to get the most out of the RAW, but it's one of the things that I forgot to put in the review.
You are so right about the 16bit raw. I can not understand why so many reviewers said that 16bit only take more space without any difference.
Please allow me one question: How do you things like time blends or luminosity blending in Affinity Photo? I'm really interested in an alternative to Adobe products. But currently I'm heavily invested (Plugin, tutorials).
@@klausschleicher523 hi, Adobe photo stack is well integrated and many tutorials and plugins are available. It’s main stream and streamlines a professionals workflow. So before considering alternatives consider what are the reasons you are not happy with current and its prohibiting factors. I am not a professional so time efficient workflow is not my focus. As long as I can perform the operations I need for my type of image processing then that’s all that matters. I shoot x-system and GFX for my hobbyist lifestyle. If I wanted mainstream I would shoot full frame so my choice of other tools are in similar vein. I dint quite understand time blends but if you meant blend-ifs in photoshop then there is similar called blend-range in affinity giving you similar and slightly more control.
I also find that landscape photos doesn’t need a lot of photoshop processing in most cases esp with GFX files. Raw processing like Lightroom and CaptureOne is where majority of time is spent.

@@azzkhan8746 I'm still happy with the Adobe software. But I always try to have an open mind for alternatives. As you I'm a hobbyist too. With time blends I mean: You take exposures of the same scene i.e. waves on a few rocks then you combine the images in software so every rock has its crushing wave. Another example would the take a shot of the landscape at the blue hours and combine it with a shot of the Milky Way which is taken some time later.

@@klausschleicher523 ok I see what you mean. It supports combining images from exposure bracketing. It supports compositing and also combining images by placing them in different layers which you can group in single layer. You can the blend sky and foreground using selection masking e.g for blue hour foreground and Milky Way shot from same location. As for combining wave+rock type example I would think you can add multiple images in a group layer and brush in the images in sections to combine a final output. You can also position different images to get resulting final composition I guess. Use black/white brush to blend in. Same as photoshop in that regard. I think affinity is closest photoshop alternative for a very cheap perpetual license software on Mac/windows and iPad. On mac/windows version it has a separate Astro module (included) in same license which is quite interesting and capable. Very good set of tutorials from affinity for Astro. Hope this helps. Probably my dream camera but realistically I’ll have to stick with my Z7 which I’m more than happy with.

I've had Fuji GFX bodies twice(50S, 50R) and while the results are superlative - absolutely the best - in practical terms I have always ended up with my X-T4, 10-24, 50-140 or 55-200 and the newer (and excellent) 18/1.4. One reason you touch on is the lack of truly UWA lenses and long lenses. The 23/4 is an excellent lens, completely faultless but just not wide enough. I ended up shooting a lot with the 120/4 and cropping but again I was frustrated that the 100-200 and 250 just didn't solve the problem so I didn't invest in them. If money were no object I'd easily buy into the system again but while practicality (and economics) prevail I personally can't justify it. That said, if you haven't tried the system and you want to I would not deter you because the results are incredibly rewarding.
Thanks for the comment. Indeed, I plan to continue using the X System and really feel it's very much horses for courses. I was just in Namibia, and even using the 250mm with the 1,4x TC I was often frustrated at the lack of reach. Of course, you can crop in, but that does defeat the object a little.
Also, the lack of width of the 23/4 should soon be less important with the 20-35mm coming out, which should be wide enough for me, but the lack of fast options is also a small problem. I was shooting a lot of astro in Namibia, and shot both the 23/4 on the GFX and the Viltrox 13mm f1,4 on an XS10. I had to shoot ISO6400 on the GFX but could be at ISO2000 with the Viltrox, and side by side there's very little difference in absolute image quality...althought the GFX file can be printed larger
You could always get the 250mm f4 ( with TC x 1.4 ) for added reach. Helps to have a Sherpa too ! I love my GFX system but carrying it on long hikes isn't fun.
I used the 250mm with the 1,4xTC in Namibia, and it does help, (as well as being an awesome lens) but there were still a lot of shots that it was just to short for...although admittedly, Namibia is a place that does require particularly long focal lengths for a lot of shots.
And yeah, the weight of the 250mm make it pretty prohibitive
@@AndyMumford Yes, I'm very selective when I use my 250mm f4 because of its weight and size. Knowing your destination / location helps and what to expect ( as in your case with Namibia ). I still lean towards using my X-T system a lot for landscapes. Image quality is excellent and the weight reduction is huge especially for long trips. But man, are those GFX files superb !
Thanks for your excellent videos. I hope you won’t mind an elementary question, but I recently purchased two Fujinon gf lenses to use with a FF gfx50s II. I’ll mainly be driving on backroads to remote areas in the American SW to shoot landscapes sticking fairly close (1mile ?) to my vehicle when I stop to shoot. . I’ve been thinking about protective lenses either clear or uv for the two Fujinon lenses either to leave on , or just have on hand for rougher conditions. I’m wondering what you’d recommend? I’ve heard from others that using lens hoods and caps and being careful is enough, and that any protective lens will likely degrade my photos, and there is no need to buy one.

Excellent review sir. Couple of notes. The 100-200 which I LOVE is F5.6 not F4. Also it pains me to hear you mention the comparison to a D800. I was also a Nikon shooter with a couple of D800e bodies and a bevy of lenses. That was one of the reasons that drew me to the Fuji system in 2012. Now I still use my XH1 for wildlife and sports and motor sports but all my portrait and landscape are with the 100s and the 50r. I use the 30mm, 45mm and my favorite the 100-200 lens

I’d be interested to see a comparison of cropping the GFX100S vs using a longer lens with the X-H2S or similar. I find the dynamic range and colour depth with my GFX 50S is just so superior to my X-T4 that the X-body is mostly relegated to long-lens use. I’ve also seen some users adapting Canon and other lenses to get the reach. The Canon 70-300L is relatively compact, but still a good bit more weight than the XF 55-200
Fuji 70-300 + 1.4TC. So light.
My feeling is that even cropped the quality of the sensor gives better quality than a similar pixel count on the X Series cameras. That may change though when Fuji put out the high resolution XH2 later this year. That should make a really nice second camera with a long lens

Not my budget, Andy, but makes sense to rely on several Fuji gears depending on the photography project… but lack of telelenses (too heavy?). Like your weight comparisons: crucial for a real photo bag for outing/travel.
So happy with my 2 XT4 and light telelenses. I prefer my merged panoramas to the direct ones from this medium format. And to properly chose my lens & my composition instead of cropping afterwards.

I have the R5 with several RF lenses (which are not cheap either)... it's a very good camera, but not excel, especially in color / image quality (according me). That's why I am looking reviews about the GFX100S and I like when people like you are talking about real life experience (with pro and cons) about the camera, technical aspects I can watch them in internet, but real life experience you just need videos like you did. Thank you for posting it... now I am more convinced myself to buy it

I’ve just returned from Greenland with it, where I used the 20-35mm a lot, and it’s a fantastic system. It was down to -25C and the camera had no problem at all

Hi Andy, as you point out, the lens offer is the key problem. The question at heart is whether this is holding you back so much that you constantly regret the investment, or whether in real life it's not much of an issue. Naturally, every photographer is different and there's no one-size-fits-all answer. From your perspective, your usage pattern, and the experience you've made until now, what would be your answer?
Indeed, it's a very personal question. I took the GFX with me to Namibia and found the lack of reach quite limiting, even though I had access the 250mm with the 1.4xTC, and I'm not sure if I'll take it with me to Lofoten, where weight will be an issue and I'll be using telephoto a lot. I really feel there are trips and situations when the GFX will be awesome and I'll take it with me, and other trips when it will either need to be backed up with something else (when I need a telephoto or fast and wide lens for astro/aurora) or better off left at home. In short, what it does well it does brilliantly, but it's not an all round brilliant landscape system. Yet.
Do you print your own like the one handing behind you or do use a service? Which and where?

Thanks for the comment. Lightroom is fine with the files...and much bigger ones too. It all depends on the processing power of your computer. If you have an up to date computer with plenty of RAM and processing power the files are no problem at all.

A lot. Pretty much any wide angle image with a foreground that's closer than 3 meters needs to be focus stacked

You can get tack sharp images without focus stacking for sure as long as everything in the frame is within the field of focus for that particular focal length. With the GFX that field of focus is smaller than full frame and APS-C, and this is most noticeable when shooting wide angle where you have a foreground close to the lens and a distant background. In these cases you'll often need to focus stack. However, of all the images in this video I only needed to focus stack one of them

Well, it's an impressive camera, but you have to be aware of the limitations of the system as a whole and try to see whether it's right for you or not

On the wide end, especially fast lenses for astro, sadly, the tulip shaped built-in hoods on the very wide 35mm lenses keep them from being used on anything but 35mm sensors and only in the 3:2 format.
Sawing off the built-in hoods seems to be the only solution, which I haven't heard of anyone doing that yet, and how difficult it would be.
They may not cover the full GFX 100S sensor, but at the very least, we could shoot in formats other than 3:2, which is often not the best aspect ratio for astro.
Keith Cooper from Northlight Images has a UA-cam channel, and has many articles online. He's showing how Canon and some other tilt/shift or just shift lenses can be used on the GFX, covering the full sensor. They can be heavy and are not water sealed though, but the adapter wouldn't be water sealed anyway.

I've loved using it with the Canon 5DsR. It's nice to see it has so much more unused width once the baffle is removed.
Regarding wide, I now realize that you're probably a happy camper with the GF 20-35mm, since it's equivalent to 16-28mm full frame, so a 15mm full frame shift lens that's probably not as sharp wouldn't help for landscape.
For astro, the fast and wide full frame SLR lenses can be used on the GFX in the 35mm mode, but we're still stuck in the 3:2 aspect ratio.
I would love to use one of these lenses on the GFX in aspect ratios other than 3:2, which sadly now requires the petal lens hoods to be sawed off.
Maybe a third party manufacturer can market one of the fast FF, SLR wide angles without the unremovable petal shaped lens hood for the GFX, if there would be enough interest.
It probably wouldn't fill the entire GFX sensor, but we could crop in post to any aspect ratio, and probably get the best results of any camera system, and not be stuck in 3:2.

As usual Andy, your review is practical and well thought out. When I decided to add the GFX to my kit I went through a lot of soul searching and research. As you noted a couple of times it is the reach that bothers me a lot. I currently have the 30mm / 100-400mm / 100-200mm + 1.4tc in the bag. When the 20-35mm comes out I will probably swap the 30mm for it, although the 30mm is a marvelous lens. Two things I have had to get used to that are oh so difficult: narrowing the aperture to f/16 or even f/22 - something you would never do on an X body is kind of required and ok with the GFX. The other is using the depth of field preview button - I didn’t use that a lot on the X bodies, but now it is a must. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

You rightly complained about the lack of telephoto options native to the gfx system. Have you used adapted telephoto Canon lenses on the 100s ? I am eager to see how well they work
I haven't tried any third party lenses with an adaptor with the GFX, but it's something I may have to try
@@AndyMumford the lens restrictions are the major reason why I have held off shifting. I spent years using Canon FF cameras, from original 5D through to 5DSR, but shifted to the XF system at the time of release of the XE1. Have been very happy with the XPro 2 and now the XT4, but again didn't want to throw out my Canon L glass. I have been using the Fringer mount after an unhappy experience with others. It has been fantastic. No cheap glass in the way and excellent autofocus. I am keen to see how their GF mount works, but there is very little on the net about it, particular with longer lenses. If I can successfully mount 70-200 and 400 F4 DOii then I would probably roll the dice on the 100s. If you do get a chance to use it please let me know

What's PC (CPU, GPU, RAM, Storage) do you have to manage such a big files ? :)
I'm using a 2019 MacBook Pro and it's fine. The files are larger than more image files for sure, but are nothing compared with 4K video. For example, editing this video on a 4K timeline takes for more processing power than editing GFX files in Lightroom or PS

In regards to the depth of field example. I'd suggest stopping down to f16 to have a bigger depth of field. You won't need to worry at all about diffraction. Using f9 like you did isn't something landscape photographers using this setup would typically use, it's probably what an apsc user would be shooting at.
That's a good point and on my last trip I shot pretty much constantly at f13. DOF was still an issue in many situations though
@@AndyMumford I bet it was. Not only that but stopping down to f16 would result in much longer shutter speeds in low light situations creating tricky shooting conditions, especially with some wind about.
@@mrsusan893 f16 will definitely introduce diffraction. Even on my 50MP GFX you notice it stopping down further than f11. On the 100MP sensor diffraction will start off even earlier. In my opinion that‘s the biggest flaw of the 100S when used for landscape photography.

It works Great trust me, It on my GFX 100 90% of the time now ...in 35mm auto crop Mode ....just sold my 1/4 tele and 100-200mm... I have the G 250mm up for sale. And just bought back my Sigma Art 85mm 1/4 and its great as well ...Might sell my G-110mm

Love the system have worked my way through the 100 and 100s since launches I am now fazing out and back to Nikon and the z. I will keep the 100s and fave lens the 45mm only for those times I want the quality, but I like having a lighter more versatile kit. I also for some reason always had trouble with the colors at sunset with the gfx they always are to magenta and also when developing in capture one pro they oversaturate, But when I hit it right during daylight they are perfect SOOC I don’t have this problem Nikon system. Also sunstars and milky are obtained with the little Nikon. When you see a Excellent gfx file in person it is shocking. But I also found in print it does not make a huge difference.

Really happy to read this post. I have the same issues with too much magenta when shooting toward the sun at either sunrise or sunset. My experience is with the 50R as I don't own either the 100 or 100S. I searched high and low a couple years ago when I first encountered this, but couldn't find a single mention of it. I have always assumed it was something I was doing wrong. Never experienced it with Sony or Nikon.

I don't think it is medium format has less DOF, what happens medium format forces you in closer than a APSc sensor does. Isn't DOF is more of a subject to sensor function than a sensor size function? My Nikon D850 is plenty enough camera for what I do
I’ve been waiting for the 20-35 lens for several years now… it was rumored to be in the lens roadmap about three years ago.
Personally, withe the really excellent 32-64 and 45-100, I don’t understand Fujifilm’s decision to make the 35-70 kit lens at all, especially when there is the 20-35 still to come. I think that lens will be very hard to get for a long time because of demand… everyone with the GFX system is a likely candidate to buy that lens.
I keep the 1.4tc almost permanently installed on the 250mm lens, but it will also work on the 100-200 (but I’ve never even tried it).
For sure the 20-35mm is going to be in high demand, particularly with manufacturing capacity reduced at the moment.
As for the 35-70, like all of the mid range zooms there's a case to be made for it, particularly in this case as Fuji wanted to expand the market of the 50S II to pull in more full frame users and so needed a lower cost kit lens to keep the entry costs into the system low. If anything, the 45-100mm makes the least sense on it's own, although it's excellent in terms of optical performance, and has a wider focal range than the other two lenses.
I used the TC and 250mm on my recent trip to Namibia, and it does give extra reach. although it's size and weight don't make it practical if you have any hiking to do and want to carry various other lenses.
@@AndyMumford Yes, absolutely. The 35-70 lacks an aperture ring, which I feel is hugely unfortunate. I would have thought about getting it as a small zoom but losing that aperture ring makes me reluctant to go there... One of the reasons I chose the GFX system and left Sony behind was the aperture rings... Now, Fuji is removing them (hopefully just from this lens) and Son has started adding them on more lenses... ugh.
As a bit of an old-school photographer, I want gear with aperture rings.
45-100 is handy for the studio use. I am waiting for their 30mm TSE lens.
@@bobby350z Yes, a lot of people are waiting for that as well, but I suspect they will sell 100x more 20-35 lenses than the TS. The 20-35 is essentially a "Trinity" lens whereas the TS is somewhat of a special purpose lens.
However, I do think that Fujifilm could dominate the architectural photo market if they put out a tro of good TS lenses; something like a 21mm, 30mm, 45mm... it would have so many people swich over to the system just for the lenses.

Hi Lawrence, thanks for the comment. To be honest, it’s impossible to say whether the increased resolution and IBIS are worthwhile because something like that is incredibly subjective. You get about 3000 more pixels on the longest edge, which is useful if you want to print large, and IBIS can really help, but whether it’s worth it, only you can answer
Create a problem and sell a solution (no long lenses -> 100MP) 😃 the fuji lens lineup made me switch back to Nikon full frame. Considering that the 100-200 is optically quite disappointing, Nikon offers a much more convincing lens lineup. For example: 14-24; 24-120 and 100-400. Image quality with a Z7 is also on par with the GFX 50 bodies. I still kept my 50R as it was always fun to use. I just casually shoot it with the prime sometimes for street photos.
Well, I'm not so sure it's quite as cynical as "create a problem"...it's just that Fuji are a smaller company (in comparison to Sony, Canon and Nikon) and are building a system from scratch. There are no legacy lenses to fall back on and their resources and manufacturing capacity to build up the lens range for what is a relatively small part of the market (the APC-S series sells considerably) are limited. As I said, I question some of the choices they've made in lenses, but that's the same with all their stuff to be honest (an 8mm f3.5 lens for the APS-C line up when everyone has been crying out for a wide prime that's f2.8 or faster. What's the point of that exactly?) but obviously they think something longer than 200mm is less of a priority. It'll come, but it will probably take years and weigh half a ton when it does.

You are right about the imaging business from Fuji not being as large as Canon or Nikon, but on top of lacking lenses some of their products have flaws that are inacceptable in my opinion. The newest generation of X-System cameras is unable to focus consistently in AF-S mode for example. You can literally put the camera on your tripod and keep half pressing the shutter focusing on the same object while the camera always chooses different focusing points. I tried it with their newest lenses 18mm 1.4, 23mm 1.4, 33mm 1.4 and also the 14mm in combination with the X-T4. The focusing point on the focus scale keeps jumping in significant steps. Sometimes it was front focusing so much that the object was totally out of focus. I even tried different cameras, same outcome. The GFX however focuses accurately without any problems.
Selling tons of X- System cameras and lenses while their focusing system isn‘t working properly is inacceptable in my opinion. Would be great if you could communicate the problem to Fuji. (Made me switch to Nikon full frame)

- The grip is good, I agree. Personally I don't like traditional straps on my camera but on larger bodies I always try to have a Nikon AH-4 handstrap. Most arca plates are prepared for handstrap use and when used correctly you can leave the camera hanging from your arm while completely open up your hand.
- On the topic of resolution, well 100mp is twice as much as 50 and when comparing area of output at same DPI it also means twice as big. Of course the output is not twice as wide and twice as tall, that would be two doublings which would require 4x the amount of pixels.
- Totally agree with you on the "weirdness" of standard zoom lenses. While one is very light and one with OIS but... I mean the 45-100 is probably the least useful since the GFX50sII and 100s with IBIS now exist.
- In terms of image quality it is for me personally the biggest jump since the Nikon D800E. And because it is also a full 16bit BSI sensor camera which delivers so much more detail and so much more color information than I ever had before, I really don't think I could make use of anything more than the GFX100s. It's the endgame.
- Btw.: 0:37 The 100-200 is mislabeled as f/4.
Thanks for the comment Christian. Indeed I also hate neck straps and use hand straps on all my cameras. Op/tech make a nice one that I'm using on the GFX. I recently was shooting aerials with the doors off with it, and for that you really want to know it's secure.
As I said about resolution, most people judge print size by the longest edge of the print, and so I thought it was important to point out that double the resolution may equal double the output size, but it won't double the size of your prints in terms of how large are on the longest edge.
On lenses, I recently had a chance to use the 45-100 in Namibia, and while it may be the least useful of the 3 mid range zooms, it really does have lovely performance.
And yes, 100mp really is the endgame. After this, any improvements really are difficult to justify in real world shooting

I've no idea how much 10lbs is and I'm way too lazy at this time of the day to do the conversion 😉 but if you mean it would be heavy, then absolutely, it would be a bomb.

The 1.4x TC still only gives you an equivalent of about 200mm reach. I think the system really needs an 80-400 or 100-400 equivalent
@@AndyMumford fair point. But do you really use gfx for bird or wildlife or fast action type of stuff? I always feel like that requires the faster AF and longer lenses which seems like their X strategy. I love my gfx system and transitioned away from my x kit when I realized I didn’t need that much reach and speed. I agree though if we can get the image SOOC would be nice so we don’t throw away resolution but at 100mega pickles I guess it’s all good 😂 I enjoy your video - do more please :) gfx focused of course :)
@@AliSatchu I regularly shoot landscapes at over 200mm. There are images in this review where I had to crop in quite a lot due to not having the reach, and since I made the video I've take the system with me to Namibia, Iceland and the Dolomites, and in each place (particularly Namibia) I was frustrated at the lack of reach.
Don't get me wrong, I love the system, and I'm aware that Fuji have limited manufacturing capacity to develop and produce new lenses for a system that's relatively niche, so it will take time to fill out the system, but a longer zoom is something that's missing in the line up which I hope Fuji will rectify in future.

Haha, yeah...it's always an issue to show image quality on YT. First there's the rendering of the screen capture, and then the YT compression. Trust me though, there's really no banding at all 😊
