I beg to differ sir. I see no difference in pushing my files to the limit between 16 and 14 but files. By the time there is a difference you end up getting a ton of noise in the shadows so yeah not worth the file size. 14 is more than enough with a decent exposure.
I tend to shoot with the medium format for around two years now. My main camera is the Fujifilm GFX 50R. With my experience with MF, you will don’t need exposure brackets due to its high DR, but you will need to do a lot of focus bracketing because it's hard to get everything in focus especially if you have close foreground subjects
I never doubted for a second that you would keep the GFX-100S. It suits your style of landscape photography (in that you were already very deliberative and almost always use a tripod) and it fits your style of post-processing (in that you are a total pixel-peeper, even though you constantly deny it!) And while the XT-3 fits my style of photography and post-processing, I'll keep watching your videos to see where this medium format camera takes you.
A great decision Mark! I use a Canon 5DSR (50mp), I don't regret spending the $$ when I got it in 2016. The only thing I would move to now is the GFX100s if the bank account could take it, :( I did a trip to Lofoten in Feb 2020, captured some magnificent images there and the Quality of prints I can do is why I got a 50mp camera. Detail does matter when you want to print LARGE! Hope you have fin with the GFX and get some magnificent images. Cheers from Australia🇦🇺
One of the main reasons I moved to the Fuji system was to save weight, I have the xt2 and xt3 and very seldom do I need to bracket my images for landscapes. I would never want to go back to a much heavier system but hope you enjoy your new toy.
That's the reason why I moved to Olympus and m43 some years ago, and it's also the perfect companion with the GFX system. With adapters, I can use nearly all of my lenses on both systems, because I have still many of the best manual glasses from Nikon F and Olympus OM Zuiko, and many others. I also use OM-3Ti for 135 film, Mamiya 6MF for medium format film, and a rull range of 4X5" system. The GFX can be used as a digiback for that to. And by the way, I have those small Panasonic GM1 and GM5 cameras. Small enough to fit in a pocket, and can use the same lenses as GFX.
@@frankluo230 I have seen adapters for Mamiya 7, but not for Mamiya 6. I have that camera, with the 50 mm, and I would like to use it with GFX, but I think we have to wait for a adapter for that.

Great video, Mark! I actually feel excited for you to move onto medium format. I remember when I bought a Mamiya 645 30 years ago and saw those 120 Velvia roll film images for the first time - so amazing. I always love your videos.
For several years I photographed with a phase one medium format camera with their p30 + back. When Nikon came out with their high resolution bodies I jumped on it and sold my medium format. Like you I found the tonality of the medium format to be spectacular, but the system was too big to be a universal kit. A year or so back I got into the Fuji system, and love the retro look and functionality with the dials and such. I have a Nikon z7 (their glass is also spectacular) for my landscapes and use the Fuji for pretty much everything else. Don't see the need for jumping on another medium format at this point. Early in the pandemic I was hired by a client to photograph a panorama from his roof deck here in San Francisco that had a commanding view of the Bay. I used my Nikon and the manfrotto spherical head to put together a 14 image row stitched panorama that had more detail than anybody could ever wish for. That particular panorama head is a precision instrument and once it is set up and one becomes familiar with it you can move it quite fast between frames, with stitching software so sophisticated now any ghosting that might happen with movement is pretty much eliminated. Yes I am not photographing moving water with a ND filter but for everything else I don't see the need for dropping $20,000. Glad you can afford it. Great review I appreciate your time and putting it together.

Thank you Mike for your opinion and good luck with your new camera. About a year and a half ago I went from Canaan to Olympus OMD Mark ii then Mark iii just before Olympus sold its camera division.. Iwas extremely pleased with the MARK ii because of the amount of UA-cam tutorials that were available. In the Fall of last year, the FUJI XT3 went on sale and I could not resist the temptation.. Both the OLYMPUS and FUJI SYSTEMS produce exceptional results and thus I find it very hard to choose one over the other. The OMD has onboard IBIS which is helpful as I mostly shoot hand held landscape, BUT the XT3 competes so very closely that it has become a very perplexing choice. They have recently lowered the price on the XT4 ( with IBIS ) so I’m leaning in that direction. Just last week I purchased a FLINGER EF-XT adapter which works extremely well and can now use most ALL of my CANON lenses on the XT. Do you think it is worthwhile to purchase the XT4 and trade in the XT3? You have owned them both. I would love to hear your thoughts if you get a chance. Sorry for being so wordy. mike
Over the last year I have become Increasingly interested in photography and decided to buy an actual camera and a couple lens. I basically watched all your videos to make my decision as well as to help me learn. Thanks for all you hard work with your educational videos and love your work!
With any gear piece , it’s all about what works best for you and meets your needs. Congrats on the new camera -looking forward to more videos and seeing what other images you create
Mark, congratulations on the new addition. Your commentary is always entertaining and educational. Many of us are enthusiasts and not pros so investing in very expensive gear is prohibitive. Thanks to your generous tutorials, you help us to understand that the camera is a tool. The real talent is the person using the camera. Thanks for helping me improve.
Great video! I have the GFX (50r and just sold for 100s) and the 45-100 is a killer lens. My kit: 23MM, 45-100 and 100-200. And an X-t4. Works out well for me.
There is a 35mm crop mode in the shooting setting menu. But you must know it won't capture any data outside the frame in that mode. To get access to the other crop modes you have to shoot in jpg + raw. You will capture the entire sensor with those modes. You should also shoot in fine jpg plus raw to check critical focus. The embedded jpg in raw mode does not have enough resolution to check that focus. Hope that helps. The gfx system is the best out there.
I think you made the right decision here. Having that resolution to play with and then going back to 26MB would be a tough call. And the variety of lenses will only increase in the future.
An you are blessed to have the opportunity to purchase this beautiful piece of craftsmanship of MF camera GXF 100s. Please don’t apologize In fact you should had did a part 2 and for us with more juicy detail:) To be honest I was drooling for the Hasselblad X2D until I came across the Fuji GXF 100s not only for the price but what Fuji put into that MF it is in president. I’m a portrait studio photographer and my dream is to own this MF camera with the 80mm f1.7 and maybe one wide angle lens and that’s all I would need. Thank You.
I agree with you about the joystick, the movement of the joystick feels loose or slack. It takes time to get used to. I have the GF 32-64mm which I have found great for external architecture shots and have recently purchased the GF 100-200mm for more detail shots. I agree with you, the tone and the color of the images is excellent. Enjoy your experience with the GFX 100s!
On a side note, you’ve often mentioned how often you post on Instagram. I personally do not use the platform simply because of its clunky, haphazard constraints. It is a terrible media for DSLR photographers. So, you should do an entire video on your posting process. From taking the picture to final posting.
Thanks for this and all your videos Mark. You have taught so many of us valuable and useful tools and techniques for our photography. Many of us have seen our own work improve vastly with your instruction. Finally, I felt obliged to mention something that I believe many of us struggle with. The new camera system (body and lenses) perhaps costs upward of $10,000 US! Other vloggers we follow now have similar gear. But these costs are miles beyond what most of us can ever hope to justify as "amateur" or even "enthusiast" photographers. Without asking for any pity parties, I should be honest and admit it breaks my heart somewhat that I will probably never have the gear that might allow me to take my photography to your level -- assuming I might have the talent. While UA-cam vloggers are constantly saying that gear doesn't really matter that much, their recent purchases indicate something different. I will always continue to follow your chanel in hopes of learning and improving. There, I've said my piece. Thanks for listening.
This video didn't come with closed captions. All previous videos did. I'm glad you enjoyed your experience with a new camera. For me, I don't have $6,000 to go and upgrade my camera if I want to. I am trying to improve my photography with the camera I have- Canon Rebel 5t (entry level camera) and likely continue for awhile. Did enjoy your thought process in making an decision whether or not to upgrade. Keep it coming, Mark. Thanks.
Thank you for your in-depth assessment of the Fujifilm GFX100S and your detailed decision-making process. I am sure after you have more time with the system, you will discover more capabilities. I am looking forward to seeing more images from the new GFX100S.
Wow! I just wish I could get excited about a camera!.........I am sure you will get some great images with your new gear.....Thank you for the explanation and your time.....
Another great video! I'm glad to hear you talk about slowing down and being purposeful in composing your shots. I've gotten so used to rattling of 20 photos and deciding the best composition when I review them on the computer. The VHS T-120 killed me tho. If you don't already have one, I'd suggest getting a NAS to store all those large files.
Enjoy your new camera. Both the 23mm and 100-200 lenses are fantastic. I have also those two lenses and 32-64 and 250mm + the tele converter with the gfx-50s.I am waiting almost two months to get the 100s.I hope soon I will receive it too.
Great setup. Love the fact that you don’t need a b mode. Wish battery life were longer and someday I will have that 100s or the upcoming gfx 50s mII with the 23 and 110 f2. Super nice pic (last one)
I've got a GFX50R and my favourite things (aside from the fantastic IQ) are the 4:3 aspect ratio and the T setting giving shutter speeds up to 1 hour. I'm still undecided on the 100S. I've got one on order but am struggling to justify the expense. I don't need IBIS and I doubt I'd see any difference between 51 and 102 MP. Lens wise I use the 23, 32-64 and 100-200. They are simply fantastic. Given my time over again I'd probably switch out the 32-64 for the 45-100.
Hey, I was searching for information about GFX100s, and found your channel. It was very helpful. And I also decide to get that gear for myself as well.
It's a no brainer, ever since this beautiful camera was released, i thought that it was a landscape photographers dream , great decision and hope you will be very happy with it for years to come. For me as i do a mix of photography the lenses for the Gfx were very pricey and had limited focal range compared to full frame, i.e you would need to buy more lenses to cover the same focal range for $$$. Also i need snappy autofocus as i will be getting into wildlife also. Looking forward to see your art evolve with the GFX system!!
Congratulations. Happy for you. Seriously considering the same move-been shooting LF film for years but thinking of adding this. Thanks for all the insights. Happy shooting.
A well presented argument for getting the GFX 100s. An awesome camera which in the right hands does and will produce superb results. An excellent choice.
Can't wait to see the images coming out of that baby ... congratulations Mark. By the way, I had to pull out the atlas to search for Ocracoke Island; looks like a nice destination for getting some images from a new camera system.
Hi Mark - really well done review. Just taken delivery of the 100s myself after a similarly long process! Really appreciate your approach always. Best wishes
I come from the "electronic side", and can comment on this long exposure thing... It's dead easy to do it, simply from a settings viewpoint, but there are problems with - sensor noise - available power to keep shutter "mechanics" running - available power for image processing - camera heating - sensor heating - potential for sensor damage from sunlight And so on... It may well be doing a kind of "super-hdr", stacking up tens, or hundreds of exposures. Have you tried this feature, say, late evening? Cheers
I have recently invested in Canon RF lenses along with the R5. Very content. I do like hearing about the other camera lines. If I win a lottery I might consider adding Fuji medium format. Looks like beautiful image quality! I appreciate your comment about slowing down and making better images. Thanks for the thorough review!
Congrats on your decision on going with the awesome GFX100s 👌🏻 There was something you said at the end of the vlog and that was that you look forward to learning more about the camera and system. I know I LOVE photography because I'm ALWAYS learning as I feel all photographers do 😁 Awesome vlog as always Mark 👍
Thanks for the great and candid presentation. The GFX is out of my league, but we have a great sale on the GFX 50S II in Canada. Even though the 50S II is a wash down version with only contrast focusing, there are huge similarities that your comments apply. It might just help to convince me to assist the economy in spending more money?
We should all be so thoughtful in our decisions. Thanks, Mark. It's interesting to me on two fronts: medium format I think was a widely used film option for landscape photographers way back when - it seems to have now come full circle. But also, there are some accomplished landscape photographers who swear by other formats, including micro four/thirds. But the tonal range, detail and colour depth seem so much more compelling with MF. Looking forward to seeing more of your work with this new beast.
I am a hobby landscape photographer. I would like to have but sadly can not afford the 100s. I was thinking of pushing my limits and getting the 50r but then again the lenses cost a fortune as well. I keep my xt2 and 10-24 55-200 lenses. I love the gear and the results I'm getting with them. I totally think you are justified with your purchase decision as you're a pro and make a living of photography. All the best, hope you get lot's of great shots.
Hi Mark, I am planning a German review of the Canon R5 and wanted to ask if I can fade in 2 scenes from this video in my video. It is about where you show the folding display in portrait format and later the histogram at the top of the display. Of course, I would mention your channel in the scenes and also link it. Greethings from Germany, Dennis.
I do so enjoy watching the professionals in action and I guess to 'produce the goods' one needs top gear. If the other pros are going medium format then it behoves one to keep up. I'm presuming that equipment is a tax deductible, as it is here in Ireland, but only if photography is one's business. Good luck with the new gear, Mark. PS I very much enjoyed your segments on the LR webinar last week. Much more polished performance than some I could mention, .............. but 'no names, no pack drill'.
As always, first thank you for the video. For Fuji I shoot with the X-T4 but also own full-frame bodies for other camera manufactures but have been considering the GFX100S. This was a nice view of it and will give some real thought as to what to swap out to make the switch. I've been trying to learn more about the GF lens family before I make the move to ensure the lenses I want are there.
Crisp show but quite entertaining. Thanks Mark. Many of us live vicariously in seeing your work, since I for one could never afford the gear and / or the van! 😏
good video and congratulations on your purchase! Through the whole video I wondered if you got a discount on the equipment and I say this because you just rattled off a whole bunch of information and gave this system you stamp of approval by purchasing it and as far as I'm concerned your time and your expertise are worth some type of compensation. I see a lot of other photographers doing the same thing and I have to wonder if Fujifilm is getting this marketing for free on the guise that you get to try it out. Anyway good luck with it all and I look forward to seeing what kind of images your new format brings you. Take care and be safe out there....
Great video! I guessed your decision right away whwn I followed your argument lineup. It reminded me of myself trying to convince the missus that life as we know it would end without this or that new - and expensive - gadget. LOL! Looking forward to seeing more beautiful images.
Great work as always. If you have the chance to try some adapted lenses on the GFX, I highly recommend it! I have loved using my old Nikon F mount manual focus & manual aperture lenses with my GFX 50R and Fuji's excellent focus peaking. Carl Zeiss Planar 50mm f1.4 is incredible for bokeh & near macro detail. The Voigtlander 58mm Nocton f1.4 is epic with the GFX, Tokina 100mm Macro, Nikor 300mm 2.8D....... Most likely Leica, Canon, Hasselblad, Mamya, Pentax, Contax, vintage glass would be incredible as well. Cheers!
On a side note, I also want a GFX100s, but I've got to say my #1 selling image of all time (Sold another large one over the weekend), was taken on the 6mp Nikon D70 shot in Jpeg. So resolution doesn't necessarily translate into sales. Just food for thought. My 26mp X-T3 is so far beyond that camera in every way, so the images are even better. I'm try to be content with what I have right now, because I've always just bought everything I want and it didn't help, haha.
Thanks Mark, great review and very helpful to me in my next step with Fuji. I love my XT3 but the GFX format is a very compelling upgrade. I think I will wait to see what an XT5 or XH2 brings before I make a decision though.
Hey Mark, thanks for doing this. I enjoyed this and your previous video on the GFX100S. It also made me laugh when you said about it slowing you down and making you think that little bit harder about your shots. It reminded me of an article I read many years ago about an old guy who’d finally made the switch to digital, after years of being reluctant to do this. He said that his biggest headache in switching was it made him take way, way too many images, as they treated them as effectively ‘free’ compared to shooting film, where you had to think about the cost per image or roll of film. Then he had the really smart idea of only buying memory cards big enough to hold either 24 or 36 images per card! - just like 35mm film stock That forced him to slow down and not take so many photos. I thought it was a genius idea 👍
I am a Sony A7R shooter. But I felt I reached my end of enjoyment and growth with it. I forced myself to shoot with an X-pro 3 instead. And with some processing tricks I really love it. Next month ill get the GFX50Sii :D
Mark, you use to be a Sony guy, why the switch? Was the A7RIV not good enough? The sweet spot in lens for you use to be 16-35 and 100-400 in the Sony World. That made a lot of sense to me. Appreciate the lack of commercials!!!
Mark - all good justification for your decision. If you are going to go medium format these days, go digital. I don't understand why some photographers get a medium format film camera, go through all the hassle of shooting film, and after processing, pay a fortune to have it drum-scanned to get a digital file. How does that make any sense? If he were alive today, Ansel would be shooting digital and you'd probably bump into him in field using his GFX100s. Looking forward to seeing a ton of great images from your new camera! Cheers.
You really had me fooled with the title of this episode! The way you spoke of the images from the sensor, getting the whole exposure in one shot instead of two or three, I was wondering why in the world you are your time with it. I’m very happy for you that you’re keeping it.
That's very practical and informative.congratulations for the new GFX100S. Thanks for a nice video. Mark, I am in dilemma to buy XT-4 or any Canon mirror less camera with similar specs. Please advise. Thanks in advance.
Congrats on the new gear, that is likely what I would get if I could afford to go with the GFX right now and for the same reasons. I'll stick with the A7RIV for now until money isn't an issue.
Thanks for the informative review . I’ve been thinking about the GFX100S and your video has been very informative . Especially about being able to change the file size . I hope Fuji does release a firmware update to allow for in camera cropping .
I personally feel there are two critical lenses missing from the system. A wide angle zoom and a small, light short tele (currently no teles lighter than 1kg!). That's a shame, because you can't replicate the two lens setup of 14-24/16-35 and 1.8/85 that a lot of photographers favour in 35mm, which really helps keep the bulk/weight down for hiking. Also, when I tried the 50R I thought the EVF was one of the worst I've ever used. Lots of flicker/shimmer and either way too dim on auto, or very thin and washed out with the manual brightness cranked. Tiny buttons/joystick really hindered handling with gloves on - inexplicably so on a relatively large camera. There's no arguing with the quality of the sensor and glass though. Both very impressive.
Thanks!
Re: 16bit. Where you see the difference is in post-processing. The shadow and highlight recovery you mentioned only gets better when you shoot 16bit.
It's a no brainer! Even with just one lens you can crop the hell out of it!
I beg to differ sir. I see no difference in pushing my files to the limit between 16 and 14 but files. By the time there is a difference you end up getting a ton of noise in the shadows so yeah not worth the file size. 14 is more than enough with a decent exposure.

To be honest I was drooling for the Hasselblad X2D until I came across the Fuji GXF 100s not only for the price but what Fuji put into that MF it is in president. I’m a portrait studio photographer and my dream is to own this MF camera with the 80mm f1.7 and maybe one wide angle lens and that’s all I would need.
Thank You.
I have the same flip screen on my X-H1 as on the GFX100s..... and I simply looooove it 😃
I agree with you about the joystick, the movement of the joystick feels loose or slack.
Great video mark! Nice look into the medium format system👍
Thanks Jared!
Thanks.
Yes, please enable closed captioning for those of us who need it. Thank you.
Agree with the need for the closed captions.
Thank you for your in-depth assessment of the Fujifilm GFX100S and your detailed decision-making process. I am sure after you have more time with the system, you will discover more capabilities. I am looking forward to seeing more images from the new GFX100S.
Thanks so much John!
Cant wait to see images from your new Camera, Congrats Mark.
Thanks so much! Over posted quite a few on my Instagram page over the past couple of months
Hello from the UK. Great video. Found it v interesting as thinking of taking the plunge myself. 👍
Wow! I just wish I could get excited about a camera!.........I am sure you will get some great images with your new gear.....Thank you for the explanation and your time.....
Glad to do it!
Bought this camera on the weekend. I've felt overwhelmed given my old camera was a Canon 50d lol. Fantastic video, lots of great info!
Thanks Dario!
I have also those two lenses and 32-64 and 250mm + the tele
converter with the gfx-50s.I am waiting almost two months to get the 100s.I hope soon I will receive it too.
Great setup. Love the fact that you don’t need a b mode. Wish battery life were longer and someday I will have that 100s or the upcoming gfx 50s mII with the 23 and 110 f2. Super nice pic (last one)
Great video Mark! It was really interesting to see how both sensor sizes and systems played out for you and your workflow!
Always excited about Wednesdays to see your insightful videos.
Thanks so much Joel!
Hey, I was searching for information about GFX100s, and found your channel. It was very helpful. And I also decide to get that gear for myself as well.
Glad you enjoyed it Chris!
Medium format has such a nice feel to the shooting experience. Thanks for a great review :)
Great choice! I'm still waiting for mine but happy using my GFX50S for now!
That's a great second option to hold you over:)
Thanks a million!
Great video and commentary and good pros and cons list. 👍
Hi
The crop mode is on the 2nd page of the shooting setting “35mm format mode’
Super excited about that - a commenter earlier mentioned the same thing earlier, thanks so much Jullette!
Congratulations. Happy for you. Seriously considering the same move-been shooting LF film for years but thinking of adding this. Thanks for all the insights. Happy shooting.
Thanks a million Dan!
A well presented argument for getting the GFX 100s. An awesome camera which in the right hands does and will produce superb results. An excellent choice.
Thanks John - glad you enjoyed the video!
Congrats on your decision, Mark, and thanks for the interesting video
Thanks Noel!
Knew from your first video with the gfx that it was not going back 😁. Best of luck with it, can't wait to see the images you make with it
Thanks Michael!
Congrats on moving to such a great medium format system.
Thanks Paulo!
Can't wait to see the images coming out of that baby ... congratulations Mark. By the way, I had to pull out the atlas to search for Ocracoke Island; looks like a nice destination for getting some images from a new camera system.
Awesome place - thanks Greg!
Hi Mark - really well done review. Just taken delivery of the 100s myself after a similarly long process! Really appreciate your approach always. Best wishes
Thanks Jim! Enjoy the new camera!
I got 2 GFX100s, 80mm1.7, 110mm F2, 23mm, 32-64mm zoom, 50mm pancake, 45mm 2.8 all amazing lens. I still use my Fujifilm XT-4 which I love.
Thanks for all the thought you put into the pros and cons.
I come from the "electronic side", and can comment on this long exposure thing... It's dead easy to do it, simply from a settings viewpoint, but there are problems with
- sensor noise
- available power to keep shutter "mechanics" running
- available power for image processing
- camera heating
- sensor heating
- potential for sensor damage from sunlight
And so on... It may well be doing a kind of "super-hdr", stacking up tens, or hundreds of exposures. Have you tried this feature, say, late evening?
Cheers
I have recently invested in Canon RF lenses along with the R5. Very content. I do like hearing about the other camera lines. If I win a
lottery I might consider adding Fuji medium format. Looks like beautiful image quality! I appreciate your comment about slowing down and making better images. Thanks for the thorough review!
Glad you enjoyed it Susan!
Thanks a million Shane! Hope you’ve been well buddy!
Thanks for the video. I was curious to hear your decision. It’s out of my budget range, but the size of the 100s definitely got my attention.
Mark you did an excellent job convincing yourself you need that camera! Thumbs up.
Thank you! I gave it my all🤣
Hi Mark, I am planning a German review of the Canon R5 and wanted to ask if I can fade in 2 scenes from this video in my video.
Excellent video, Mark. Have you printed any of the files?
Thanks Derrick! I sure have and the detail is pretty impressive!
Good video Mark and looking forward to seeing some great images from your travels 📷👍
Thanks for always checking out the videos Chris - means a lot!
good video and congratulations on your purchase!
Thanks a million Peter!
I'm try to be content with what I have right now, because I've always just bought everything I want and it didn't help, haha.
excellent review, thank you Mark.
A nice review must say I thought from the title you were getting rid of the 100s.
Thanks Mark, great review and very helpful to me in my next step with Fuji. I love my XT3 but the GFX format is a very compelling upgrade. I think I will wait to see what an XT5 or XH2 brings before I make a decision though.
Is this XH2 going to come out ever ???? OUF !!!!!
Great video. I like that wooden grip on your xt-4. What brand is it and where to buy?
Thank you! It’s from the brand Small Rig
Congratulations on your decision
Great info, Fab video, Thanks.
Cheers.
As all of your videos this one is also very informative and enjoyble too... thanks to make this kind of videos
Happy to hear you enjoyed it!
You really had me fooled with the title of this episode! The way you spoke of the images from the sensor, getting the whole exposure in one shot instead of two or three, I was wondering why in the world you are your time with it. I’m very happy for you that you’re keeping it.
Thanks so much friend!
Great decision from the information collected and one set of batteries for both, perfect! That would have been a tough one to walk away from.
