I'm actually glad that the cop first checked if she was diabetic. Since a diabetic with dangerously low blood sugar looks a lot like a highly drunk person. Looking like they could barely stay awake, slurring their words, unsure where they are, who they are, etc.

For real! I'm a t1d and when my blood sugar was at my personal lowest (about 25 mg/dL or ~1.3 mmol/L?) I dont even have any memories of it, even though the people around me said I was technically conscious, trying to talk to them. Super scary and hard to tell the difference if you don't know about it!

Which is why diabetics shouldn't be allowed to drive. Too many incidents of them causing accidents or becoming stranded with children in the car because their sugar is too low. If you have an illness where if you miss your medicine or didn't time your snacks right while taking it, and the end result is extremely physical/cognitive impairment then you needn't ever be operating a motor vehicle. For everyone's saftey.

as a type 1 diabetic, i’m always worried if my blood sugar goes dangerously low people, especially cops, will just assume i’m drunk. that was so refreshing to hear the cop posed diabetes as a possibility makes me feel like if that does (god forbid) happen to me i’ll be a little bit safer and understood.
EDIT- this comment caused a great deal of uproar in the comment section and what feels like a lot of accusations of lying about my condition. i didn’t volunteer every ounce of info about myself, and people are more nuanced than their youtube comments make them out to be.

I think it's safe to say that if you were that far gone and they did ask you wouldn't exactly be giving clear and concise instructions on what to do. It is scary to imagine your diabetes getting you in that state because that probably means you're living your last moments on earth. The police can't help. If they somehow figured it out and called an ambulance, it's pretty unlikely they could help. I guess it depends on how severe and how long one has been in that condition. But she was out cold for nearly ten minutes before they got her to open that door. Ten minutes of being unconscious from a blood sugar crash and what are the chances of someone figuring it out and figuring out the right dose of insulin for you? An incorrect dose can do more harm than help. You might wake up in a condition you would rather have never woken up from. And it is not limited to type 1 diabetes, not by a long shot. Type 2 is just as dangerous, and someone that's just medium hypoglycemic and doesn't really understand is in more danger than both.

My daughter was taken from us by a drunk driver 8 years ago. She was just 24 years old. The driver actually mounted the pavement and hit her and another pedestrian. The other person survived, but with serious injuries. There is, as Moist said, no reason to ever drive drunk, especially these days. There should also be nothing even resembling leniency for drunk drivers, no matter how much or how little damage they cause.

yeah, as a veteran substance abuser who has tried essentially every even slightly well-known drug and a bunch of others, I can tell you that this is almost certainly not just alcohol, like she seems to be straight up hallucinating to a degree beyond what is normal even for extreme drunkenness, and forming completely incoherent, dream logic-like sentences. If I had to guess, I'd say maybe zolpidem (Ambien), which means that this is actually theoretically something that could've occurred due to her taking a sleeping pill as directed and having this reaction (lots of people using Ambien to sleep and ending up driving without meaning to under its influence), although people also do sometimes take it recreationally as well. Given that she got in trouble for it, I doubt she was just using an Ambien prescription as directed, though, as usually they'll go easy on people who do that.

You should check out the case of Katy Palmer and her husband John who were struck by a drunk driver. Katy was killed and John was paralyzed initially. This man that hit them had multiple DUI's, had a suspended license, evading arrest, reckless driving, and got in no trouble for killing a women. They weren't even walking on his side of the road. He was going well over the speed limit and there was no attempt to stop. He got nothing for this. Not the only story I've heard like this and it makes me sick that someone can just get away with that.

I lost one of my best friends to drunk driving, his family tried to cover it up but it was way too obvious a lie, he had a history of drinking so it wasn't a shocker but still didn't like how they lied about it as this is a teachable moment that could save someone else. This was back in 2005, we had just graduated high school and 4 months later he was out drinking with his girlfriend and a few friends, took them all home and thankfully he managed to get them all home safely but on his way back he lost controll and hit a tree so hard he snapped his neck. Drunk driving is stupid, I lost a good friend that day and yes it was his fault, I had his toxicology report pulled and no surprise to me he was way over the limit. In 2 years it will be 20 years ago since his death, I still miss him, wish he could of met my other best friends who are now my brothers. Call a uber, lift, stranger on craigslist, a friend or family member, again drunk driving there is no excuse.

My sociopath aunt actually told me he wasn't going to make it and I had to live with that for months, so I can genuinely empathize. They never found out who was driving as they both were ejected, but my dad refused to ever drive again. He accepted responsibility and spent the most important years of my childhood in prison. I still can't imagine losing him that early. He ended up passing away from cancer when I was in my early 20s.
I hope you've found healthy ways to process that all. It took me a long time to understand the ways all of that affected me negatively. Ways that I didn't realize at all. All are 100x cheaper than getting a DWI and the costs that come with it. It’s insane to me that anyone would ever even consider driving drunk. DONT DO IT. IF caught, your life is impacted forever. IF you are lucky enough to get home and not hurt anyone, then woohoo, don’t ever try it again. Most aren’t that lucky, they either get pulled over or they cause an accident, that’s where the real horror comes in. All extremely preventable. Make the smart choice, pay $30 to get home, not $10,000 for criminal charges.

There's something similar here in Indiana. Basically when you sign for your license (in the terms that no one reads) you actually agree to always do a breathalyzer and/or blood alcohol testing at the request of an officer. So refusing the test can actually get you in some hot water. From what I've heard few officers here will actually use that against you unless you are way zonked like this girl is. They'll usually just take the DUI and suspend the license for a year or two.
Now I have never had a DUI let alone been pulled over. But this is what I have heard from officers in my hometown and seen via the news and whatnot

She taught Special Education her entire adult life and was also a fluent ASL translator who helped all deaf students in the area (both in and outside of the school she taught at). Thanks to her, we had kids who were deaf able to play sports because she showed up to every practice and game to translate for them.

“The Three Little Pigs” by Leslie Brooke is a classic children’s story that follows the journey of three pigs who set out to build their own homes. Each pig chooses a different material - straw, sticks, and bricks - to build their houses. When the big bad wolf comes to blow down their houses, only the pig with the brick house is able to withstand the wolf’s huffing and puffing. This story teaches valuable lessons about hard work, perseverance, and the importance of making wise choices. The pigs who took the time to build a strong foundation were able to protect themselves from danger, while the pig who chose the easy way out suffered the consequences. Overall, “The Three Little Pigs” is a timeless tale that emphasizes the importance of preparation and resilience in the face of adversity.

The worst case I experienced shows how it can go beyond that one bad decision. My husband's cousin was killed by a drunk driver on Christmas Eve several years ago. She had just turned 18. Her older sister was so devastated by the loss that she ended up taking her life a few weeks later. It turned out she was pregnant. I grew up in Alberta, it's the same thing here. People will brag about how they drive drunk all the time as if they think they're cool. If you express concern, they'll tell you "it's fine". I've lost friends to it as well. It's never the driver who dies, always the passengers.

Sconnie over here too. I live on a lake and it's even worse. Every year there's a bad boating accident and alcohol is ALWAYS involved in boating accidents. (not literally there's no such thing as an absolute)

Damn. Anyone who's had 3 o'clock to drink is highly unpredictable. Especially when controlling a highly responsive 2-ton murder wagon. The fact that she didn't kill anyone isn't grounds for a slap on the wrist, it's an absolute miracle, and she should still see time as if she did kill someone.

The law always makes distinctions between risk and outcome. That’s why there are so many attempt and conspiracy charges. Nobody who didn’t kill someone should serve the time of someone who did kill someone. That’s ridiculous and counterproductive. She should be forced into an evidence-based substance-abuse program, sbe required to sell all vehicles she owns, and have her license permanently revoked. The last thing shouldn’t be a big deal but unfortunately this country coerces people to own and drive cars because of the shameful quality of public transit in the US.

In my state it’s a mandatory sentence of a minimum of 90 days for a first time dui of .15 or higher. Absolutely disgusting that she got off with next to no consequences, especially considering there are still people serving YEARS in some states for drug possession charges. If she wasn’t so drunk that she couldn’t stay awake, she more than likely would have hurt or killed someone.

Good thing they conducted a sobriety test. Honestly couldn’t even tell she had anything to drink!
Edit: y’all it’s a joke calm down. Ik about all the illnesses that can mimic being drunk. I, personally, just found it funny that they (apparently) have to issue a test when someone is clearly under the influence of alcohol. And maybe if those are symptoms that can happen to someone, say with diabetes, then maybe they shouldn’t be driving either. Just a thought.

This better be sarcasm because you invalidated your argument with that statistic. The majority of drivers aren’t driving under the influence, so you’re saying maybe 5 percent of people, if we’re being generous, cause 40 percent of crashes…
